Xander had been enjoying spending some time on the shooting range with Colonel O'Neill. The Colonel reminded him of Duncan. A man with a personal code of honor and deep commitment to protecting people. Then a Corporal appeared and requested to speak with Colonel O'Neill. He wasn't wearing ear protection so he signaled from the door that he needed to speak to the Colonel, who followed him out into the hall and closed it. Which meant Xander, even with his better then average hearing, couldn't hear what they were talking about. Then O'Neill opened the door and motioned Xander out. Curious, he handed his gun to the officer overseeing the shooting range and followed O'Neill out.
"We have abit of a problem. Your girl's gotten herself into abit of a situation. She apparently threatened a scientist."
"How exactly did she threaten him? Verbal shredding ot actual weapons?"
"Both and the guards can't figure out what happened to the knife she used to threaten him. Any ideas?"
"I have a good idea, yes. She would only threaten this scientist if he'd done something to offend her."
"Oh, I have no doubt he did something to deserve it, he's that kind of guy. But he's got friends or at least people to whom he's useful, so this could be an issue. So we need to head back."
"No problem. My place is with Cordy anyway."
"How long have you been together?"
"We've known each other since we were five. We got together about half way through junior year and were together for a year. Then another girl we'd also known since we were five manipulated us apart. Turned out she was nursing an obsession with me. Cordy and I got back together about six months after breaking up and the girl, Willow, tried to kill her. She was stopped. Unfortunately, she still hates Cordy and is unapologetic for her behavior."
"Oh, nasty situation."
"So tell me about the guy Cordy threatened."
"He shouldn't even be here. Like Carter, he's a mega brain. Unlike Carter, he's arrogant about it. He's constantly insulting her whenever he's around."
"And that probably contributed to whatever Cordy did. If she likes you, she feels protective of you. I know she likes Major Carter. Strong woman succeeding in a man's world, earning their respect, while still being herself. Cordy would find alot to admire there."
"That's good. Carter's worked hard to get where she is. Working here means she doesn't get the accolades she should, since we're Classified. She'd have won at least one Noble Prize by now if her work was known outside the Program."
They arrived at the the infirmary where apparently the scientist, Rodney McKay, had been taken.
"So what can you tell me, Doc?" O'Neill asked Dr. Frazer.
"He's fine, he just fainted. I'm going to keep him overnight for observation because he did hit his head when he landed on the floor. Mr. Harris - ."
"Alexander or Xander, ma'am. I don't care to be referred to as Mr. Harris. I have my reasons, but they're personal."
"Very well, Xander. Cordelia is a hero, as far as I, and every woman on this base is concerned. You have no idea how many of us would have loved to do something to mess with Rodney McKay. Off the record."
"I understand, officially you could get into trouble for an opinion like that. And as military you couldn't do anything against a civilian unless he physically attacked you anyway."
"Exactly."
"Alright, let's go see McKay and get his side of the story." O'Neill decided.
"That woman is a menace!" McKay declared when O'Neill asked him for his version. "I was just doing my job! I didn't do anything to deserve being threatened!"
"Exactly how did she threaten you, McKay?" O'Neill asked.
"She pulled this long ass knife from somewhere and jammed it into the lab table between my fingers. She could have sliced one of my fingers off!"
"Only if she wanted to." Xander told him. "She's very well taught and has alot of control. She really did just want to scare you."
"And who are you?" McKay demanded to know.
"I'm her boyfriend."
"You're with that harpy? Voluntarily? Are you insane?"
"I'm beginning to wonder if you are, calling her names in front of me."
"What is he doing here anyway?" McKay demanded to know. "Aren't you investigating what that lunatic did to me?"
"Not yet." O'Neill said. "I'm trying to decide if an investigation is even warranted. You weren't invited to the party, McKay. You still haven't given me a satisfactory answer to why you were here."
"I'm the foremost expert on Ancient technology. We had a report of Ancient technology. Therefore, I was here to study it."
"It's private property. You don't have authorization to study it." Xander told him.
"That's what that girl said. How do we know it's your property? You could have found it anywhere. You obviously don't understand how the mirrors work, since you're claiming you don't need two mirrors to travel to another reality. How else do you get to another reality if you're not exiting through another mirror?"
"By just entering the reality. The mirrors are more for observing various realities. Why have a control device when the mirrors can turn on and change the view to another reality with just a touch?" Xander asked him.
Leaving McKay to gape and consider that question, they next went looking for Major Carter. They found her in her lab studying the opened control device.
"Hi, Xander." She said. "Colonel, this is fascinating. I opened up the control device we have to the mirror in our custody and compared the two - ."
"Carter, we're not here to talk about that. We're here because of Miss Chase threatening McKay."
"Oh, right. Sorry, got caught up."
