Chapter three

Shinji awoke in a soft hospital bed, greeted by another "unfamiliar ceiling", the words came unbidden.

Staring at the ceiling, images danced through his head.

He was standing on top of the fallen guard robot after making his escape from very hostile pursuers. With the green jewel in hand, he said "It starts with this... a jewel containing the ultimate power" - he triumphantly raised the emerald in the air.

Then something caught his eye. Looking down, he saw a blue hedgehog staring at him in surprise.

"That's the chaos emerald!" - he called out, anger evident in his voice - "Now I know what's going on! The military has mistaken me for the likes of you!"

Anger was met with apathy.

"So where do you think you're going with that emerald?!" - the blue hedgehog rushed at him - "Say something! You fake hedgehog!"

Unimpressed, he tossed the chaos emerald into the air and caught like a baseball.

"Chaos Control!" - he called and in a blinding flash of light... he was away, no longer within the path of the blue blur, but on top of a building right opposite.

The said hedgehog stopped short in his tracks, evidently not expecting this new development. His head spun this way and that, vainly trying to find his black-and-red counterpart. Shinji could not contain his smirk.

"Wow! He's fast!" - the blue hedgehog exclaimed, as he finally spotted his soon-to-be rival. Then he made a quick realization - "Hey! It's not his speed! He must be using the chaos emerald to warp!"

"My name is Shadow, I'm the World's Ultimate Life Form' - Shadow called out - "There's no time for games... farewell" - and in another flash of green light... he was gone

.

Shinji returned to reality. He sat up, looking at his surroundings, though not really taking it in. He was more focused on the questions going through his mind: Chaos Control? Fake hedgehog? What does it mean? Who was that blue guy? What...? - all in a seemingly never ending cycle.

He decided to think about it later, before turning his attention to his surroundings. It was a standard hospital room, through and through. White was the dominant color, broken only by a bed-side table, the window, the door and the bed on which he lay. Not that he had expected anything to be in here. His father saw him as a tool and he had never had any friends to speak of.

But why did he feel he was missing something?

As if summoned by a command, the events of the previous night flowed into his brain. He slumped back down as his body caught up with him: a sore hand from the force-field; an aching skull from the punch; his entire body numb from the energy blast. He was definitely going to have to ask why they made the pain transfer over as well. After all, wasn't it supposed to be the Eva that took the damage?

oooooooooooo

The TV churned out the news report to it's audience, who was eager to see just what kind of stupid lies the public was willing to let them get away with.

Yawning and cooling herself with a paper fan , Mistao spoke to no-one in particular. "So we're going with that plan?"

Mistaking her friend's rhetorical question as directed at her, Ritsuko responded. "Yes, we are. The public really have to be fools to believe that nonsense ."

Misato looked over her shoulder at her friend, a frown adorning her face. "What's up, Rits? You sound kinda glum.

Ritsuko sighed before facing her friend. I'm kind of sad because my pet-project has been put on the back-burner."

Misato turned around, a perverted smirk on her face. "So, finally got yourself a boyfriend?"

"Only you..." Ritsuko muttered. "No, I've just been interested in something odd about our newest employee."

Misato arched an eyebrow. "Shinji? Yeah, he hates the commander, but so does everyone else. Maybe it's because he did that charge?"

Ritsuko smiled. "No, that's not my reason for concern. But I may have found a reason for that event." She paused to get the purple haired woman listening to her a little excited.

Misato, sure enough, looked like a little kid about to be told a secret. "Tellme,tellme,tellme,tellme..." she blurted.

The bottle blonde smiled. "Not until we're in private."

Misato's face couldn't be more precious.

oooooooooooooo

Shinji stood in the hall, staring out the massive window at the city spread out in front of him. He had been raised in a quiet town, so even the few buildings he could see were amazing to him. It looked amazing, a testament to man's will. A fortress of glass, steel and concrete, jutting up into the heavens, mocking the God that created the people.

Maybe that's why second impact had occurred.

and that's why he had had to fight an 'Angel'.

He came out of his thoughts in time to see the occupant of a passing hospital gurney.

It was the girl from the night before.

Not a word was said between the two teens, as a single crimson orb made contact with a pair of blue ones. The two stared at each other until the gurney was to far away for him to see her.

Shinji sighed and sat down. He felt that she reminded him of something , somehow, even though he had never seen her before the night previous. Her blue hair and eye colors even seemed to enhance the feeling, which shouldn't have been normal. Blue hair definitely wasn't something he had seen before, though something about it reminded him of... something..or rather someone. And the red eyes didn't even seem strange to him either. It was like every morning he saw pair staring back at him. Putting a hand to his face

" Just what is going on with me"? .asked Shinji

oooooooooooooo

"Alright Rits-chan, now we're away from prying ears, so what are you so interested in Shinji for?" Said Misato, who was currently staring at her friend as their ride took them down to the depths of NERV.

"Alright, no point in hiding it. Simply put, the boy is biologically not human." As her friend stared dumbly, Ritsuko rolled her eyes.

"What do you mean not human?!" Misato demanded.

"He has a 24th pair of chromosomes, which don't match up with any known chromosomes, so that leaves extra chromosomes distributed during birth . And as much as I'd like to find out how he gained the last pair, I also want to find out what they do. I know they increase muscle power without increasing their mass, as well as providing a boosted immune system. But what interests me is how his cells divide rapidly in response to any wound, yet none of the chromosomes ever wear down. It truly is a conundrum. However, there are parts to it that I don't understand. It seems the chromosomes give him some form of energy manipulation abilities, almost like an angel, but also quite different." She paused at this. "Any of this getting through to you?"

A quick look over told her that Misato clearly wasn't getting it. Whether it was the stunned expression on her face, or the small sign that was held to her side with 'Huh What ?' printed on it that told her this is unclear.

Ritsuko sighed . "Okay, here's the easy version. He has more genes than a normal human, and it isn't from a faulty birth. His muscles are stronger per gram than a normal person's and it's really hard for him to get sick. He heals fast, and he doesn't really ever age, and the two really don't agree to each other. He can use energy like an angel, but in a different form. Got that?"

"Well that explains how he tipped my car. So he's basically like Superman?"

"Basically. Don't let him know though. It may not go over to well if you just come out and tell him he's not human."

oooooooooooo

After being given the clean bill of health, Shinji checked himself out of the hospital. the words "Chaos Control" kept ringing in his ears.

'What does that even mean?' - he thought, running his hands through his hair in frustration.

Then the images from earlier flashed by again: the blue hedgehog; the emerald. Shinji was confused as to what they meant. Deciding to once again leave it for later Shinji noticed hs was already at the front entrance of the hospital, where, to his surprise, he saw Misato. Evidently, she somehow got it into her head that he was her responsibility and came to pick him up. But he had other plans. Taking an advantage of a group of people leaving at that moment, he inconspicuously slipped out.

oooooooooooooo

Shinji was walking the busy streets of the city of Toyko-3 . He was a bit surprised that it was busy, despite the danger. Carrying his things he paid no mind to anyone, walking by in comfortable silence. Shinji's only concern was finding a new place to live and nothing more. He always stood out from every other kid his age. Shinji was considered a loner as he never attempted to make friends or become acquainted with anyone. It wasn't like he didn't like people. He just felt different from them all. A news-stand with apartment advertisement magazines caught his eye. Picking one up, Shinji began flipping through. He kept flipping the pages until one unique place caught his eye. It was called Maison Izumo . By the picture, it seem like more like a japanese inn than an apartment. But the rent was at a reasonable cost and it was about four to five blocks away, so the boy didn't complain. Shinji made a quick mental note to check with NERV on how much he was getting paid.

"I'd better get going then" - said Shinji, putting the magazine back the stand and setting off to find the place before it got dark.

Walking the busy streets towards Maison Izumo, Shinji thought about the words 'Chaos Control' again. Part of the dreams he'd been having. The boy had no luck in piecing them together. He told nobody - not even the person he was living with - about his dreams. Mostly because everyone would probably think he was crazy. Shinji's thoughts were halted when he passed an antique pawn shop. Though it was dark inside he could see a set very unusual items. Items he had felt like he'd seen before. Shinji started down his path before the dreams began affecting him again. After ten minutes of walking, the boy reached his destination. It was even bigger and more traditional up close. Drawing a breath, Shinji walked in. Looking around, he saw that it was deserted. Ringing the manager, Shinji hoped he could get a room despite his age and that he was alone. After a few minutes the manger walked up. To his surprise, it was an average sized middle-aged looking woman with shoulder length white hair and blue eyes. She smiled and said "Hello. Welcome to Masion Izumo apartments. My name is Marika Hirota. How may I help you?"

Feeling that his over-evident surprise was a tad disrespectful, he hastily bowed and introduced himself, stating his need for a place to stay.

"Are you by yourself?" - Marika frowned when Shinji simply nodded in affirmative. - "Aren't you a little young to be living by yourself?"

This irked Shinji, but he didn't show it. He simply replied that he could take care of himself just fine.

"Do you even have money to pay the rent cost?" - Marika asked

Shinji didn't know whether or not he should mention NERV. Though no one would have heard about the organization, he figured his involvement with them was not something to be spread around. Mostly he didn't want any undue attention on to himself. So he said "I have a... part time job" instead, somewhat hesitantly.

Marika eyed him, deep in thought. She had some rooms left since the giant monster attack had scared most of her tenants away. Looking into the youth's eyes, she sensed that there was something odd about him; felt the defiant spirit within. Sighing she asked "Does anyone else know you're here?"

Before Shinji could answer, the door burst open to reveal an angry looking Misato Katsuragi. Ignoring the woman, she headed straight for Shinji

"I've been looking for you everywhere! Why did you just run off like that?!"

"I left cause I was looking for a place to stay" - Shinji calmly replied. In hindsight, he respected her tenacity, even if the reasons behind it escaped him.

"And you couldn't wait for me? What if something happened to you?!"

"I take care of myself" - Shinji scoffed, turning the landlady again - "Do you have any rooms available or not?"
Marika simply looked from Shinji to Misato and back, obviously unsure as to what to do.

"I do have a single bedroom left, but..."

"Yes , that's fine" - Shinji cut her off.

And so it was settled. Only once Marika left to get the lease, did Misato regain her composure. Since it was too late to get him to stay with her, she asked "Are you sure you're going to be alright alone?"

Shinji simply nodded.

After all was said and done, Marika handed Shinji his keys. Curtly bowing to both women, he silently headed off to his room.

"Just remember: you did a good thing today" - Misato called out, feeling slightly disheartened by the lack of response.

"Don't worry, I'll keep an eye on him" - Marika assured her.

Misato merely nodded and walked out.

End Notes: Let me give a big shout out to my man popkov. For showing what's the way too go with this story. Marika Hirota is my OC I wanted a small reminder of Maria Robotnik for Shinji/Shadow and there will be few more to come. And yes Masion Izumo is from the Anime Sekirei a really great harem anime if I might add .So I ask the questions Should Shinji/Shadow unknowingly and unexpectantly use Chaos Spear to take down the fourth angel? Should Marika help him discover his powers? I need input to help to keep the story going. I don't want to just go off on my own ideas you know. So all input is appreciated. Once again thank you popkov hope he does the same thing with his story. R & R please
