Chapter four
As another morning greeted the great city of Tokyo-3, it found one Shinji Ikari tossing and turning in his bed, his nightmares wreaking havoc on his confused young mind.
"Shadow, the day of reckoning is almost upon us..."
"Target sighted! Move! Move! Move!"
"Anyone who stands in my way is my enemy!"
Shinji squinted at the stray bit of sunshine that aroused him from his troubled slumber.
'The dreams again...'
"... what do they mean?" - he asked aloud
Whatever they were, he was getting increasingly frustrated with them. It felt like he was trying to solve a Rubik's cube: not only was each consecutive side harder to solve, but it was nearly impossible without throwing previous sides into disarray.
And as one does when frustrated with the said cube, he threw it aside as he headed for the bathroom. After splashing copious amounts of water on his face to wash away the last traces of sleep, Shinji looked at himself in the mirror. To his surprise and horror, he saw his own reflection glare at him with angry red eyes. But just a blink later and it was gone. He spent the next minute painstakingly making sure that his eyes were indeed still blue. Unsure of what to make of it all, he did not have much choice but to leave it be. Otherwise he'd be late for school.
Misato had taken the liberty to enroll him in a school just a few days after his first battle, much to Shinji's annoyance. What added to it was that for any day he missed she would be on his case - something Shinji did not want or need. Walking out of his apartment entrance, Shinji noticed his landlady Marika Hirota tending to her garden in the front. It was strange, but every time he looked at her, a vague image of a girl with blonde hair and blue eyes flashed in his mind. Shaking his head to rid himself of the image yet again, Shinji headed off.
Despite the distance, and the fact that he undertook it on foot, he made it to school relatively early. Walking into class, Shinji took his seat in the middle row, while the students talked amongst themselves. Shinji took a book from his bag and began to read, oblivious to it all, as usual. As such, he failed to notice the two boys in the back staring straight at him.
" Hey, Toji, see that kid over there?" the glasses-wearing military otaku Kensuke Aida asked.
"Yeah, what about him?" the track-suit wearing jock Toji Suzuhara asked.
"He just moved here after that first robot battle."
"So?" the bored-looking jock said.
"He could be the pilot of that giant robot."
"Really?" the jock said eagerly as if he planned to do something not to pleasant to the supposed pilot
Before long, the teacher arrived and the class rep Hikari Horaki began the "Stand! Bow! Sit!" routine, and thus ushering yet another day of listening to the droning of an old man about the Second Impact. His mind free to wander once more, Shinji's thoughts became consumed with various questions. Unfortunately, his musings were rudely interrupted by a message from some curious girls in front of him: he could see them constantly glancing back at him giggling. Annoyed, he opened it, raising an eyebrow at the topic: "are you the pilot of that robot y/n?". Well there's something he should have seen coming. Not even giving it a second glance, he hit the N key and then turned off the machine

It During the break time, most of the students socialized outside on school grounds. As for Shinji himself, he spent that time sitting underneath a tree, his thoughts inevitably turning towards...
"Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog!"
"Who is this... Maria?"
"Chaos... Blast!"
For better or worse, this train of thought was at once derailed as he heard someone approaching, their footsteps practically telegraphing urgency. Looking up he saw that it was the blue haired girl. In hindsight he noted that, wrapped in bandages as she was, she probably should not have been at school at all.
Before he could even ask what she wanted, she said in a monotone voice "There is an emergency situation. I'll report in" and rushed off - once again before Shinji could even utter a single syllable strangely amused, Shinji rushed off after her.
HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
The Angel has already made its way into the city. Shinji was being sent up in Unit 01 to face it head on. As he beheld the creature, the words "Black Bull" ran through his mind, somehow tapping into his ever-infinite pool of anger and spite.
But he did not have time to contemplate as he rushed at the angel in an attempt to push it back out of the city; he bombarded it with various strikes, interspersing some tackles for good measure. Surprisingly enough, it was working. He managed to push the angel towards one of the lakes on the edge of the city; untiwwingly, he managed to knock down a large number of power lines into the said lake, effectively electrifying it.
It was then that heard Misato's voice.
("Shinji, listen! You won't win with brute strength alone! We're sending you a rifle take it now!")
"With all due respect-" - Shinji's tone was anything but respectful - something Misato was all to aware of
("That's an order!")
Shinji could almost hear something snapping. Begrudgingly, he complied. He fired off a volley, which was about as useful as paper balls against the angel's AT Field.
"Oh for-!" - Shinji had no time to dodge the incoming tentacles. His chest and arms felt like they were on fire.
("What are you doing?! MOVE!")
Pushing past the pain, Shinji willed Unit-01 into a roll, barely avoiding more punishment, and charged the angel once more. When he was on the ground he noticed the aforementioned electrification of the lake. He figured the tentacles were not suited for close quarters, which gave him a fighting chance.
It was a sound plan on paper. In practice, he underestimated the speed and flexibility of the said tentacles. In the middle of his charge, Unit-01 collapsed as the pain from the lashing its back took got transferred onto the body of its pilot. His screams reverberated through the control center, filling the personnel with indescribable horror.
("Shinji!")
"Shadow!"
("SHINJI!")
"MARIA!"
MARIA!"
"NO!"
"Ritsuko-Senpai!" - Maya's voice snapped Ritsuko out of it. Mentally reprimanding herself for losing it like that, she looked over to her little protégé.
"Dear lord! He almost crossed the ego-border! Eject the Enrty Plug! NOW!"
"We can't eject the plug!" - Shigeru called out
Crossing the ego-border in..." - Makoto took it on himself to do an official countdown - "3... 2... 1..."
What happened next was so far beyond anyone's imagination, if they didn't have footage of it, everyone would agree they were victims of a group hallucination.
It started with all communications with Unit-01 being lost. Part of Misato's mind was thankful for it: at least she couldn't hear the screams anymore. Still beset by the angel's merciless lashing, Unit-01 slowly rose to its feet. It caught a tentacle in each hand. Its head was bowed, like it was praying. A strange red glow seemed to emanate from its chest. Before long it spread all over its body. Angel's attempts to extricate itself were all but futile. When the glow reached its peak, Unit-01 raised its head and pulled with all its might. When the two were face to face, the evangelion let out a growl then the feed was cut
Some excruciatingly long seconds, the feed was restored. The angel was floating belly-up in the lake, obviously dead. But it was Unit-01 that held everyone's gaze: in the middle of what now was a huge crater and the nearby bulidings , it was on its knees, its hands in the air with the palms up, its head raised up to the sky.
Shinji stirred and groaned. He felt sore all over, and tired beyond measure. Tentatively, he opened his eyes.
"Huh ? What ..oh no not this ceiling again"

End Notes: Big ups to the amazing Mr PopKov the things he does is awesome. Shinji/Shadow will get to use Chaos Control either outside or in the Eva which ever the readers or Popkov want to see. Now the next chapter will see a glimpse of the hoover shoes Shinji will be getting. But before that he'll discover his speed. Should I have him leave Misato in dust like Sonic would? All input is needed thank you. Oh and the reason that Toji hit Shinji scene wasn't here is because I plan for something else between them.
