Chapter seven

Shinji's eyes were filled with surprise when he opened the lid on the box.

"So this is what she's been trying to hide? Why?" asked Shinji looking on in surprise.

'Why?' was indeed the question, because in the box where a pair of unusual red and white shoes. He picked up one shoe and marvelled at the design: mostly white in the front, with a black line design that parted the heel from the sole; a gold ring around the red front cushion; the 'sole', if could really be termed as such, had three yellow holes beneath the red trim line; two more occupied the bottom of the heel. He continued to marvel at the shoe for a few moments then before setting it back next to its twin.

'Why would Marika keep these shoes concealed? And why do they seem so familiar?' thought Shinji, running a hand through his hair. With a sigh he replaced the cover and was about to put the box back where he found it when a soft voice startled him.

"Like what you see?" asked Marika, causing Shinji to jump. After mentally cursing the woman for being able to sneak up on him like that, he turned to face her. She did not look the least surprised seeing him there, and simply smiled placidly.

"Yeah" - Shinji replied - "Yeah, I guess I do" - he spread his arms - "What is all this stuff, anyway?"

"Memories" - Marika replied wistfully. Noting Shinji's deadpan face, she headed behind the counter and ran her hand over the top of the shoebox, smiling coyly at Shinji - "How much do you want to know about this?" - she asked in a strangely sly voice.

"Very" - Shinji replied without hesitation. Later he would wonder about what compelled him. But right now, he did not care. He had to know.

"Well then" - Marika rested her forearms on top of the shoebox - "Your guess is as good as mine!" - she stood up and spread her arms, laughing at Shinji's dumbfounded expression.

"Wh-what the hell, woman!"

Somehow, Shinji's outburst made Marika laugh even harder.

"I'm-ahahahaha- I'm so-hahah-sorry-hahahh-the-haha-the look on your face~~!"

Shinji crossed his arms and glared at her, unamused.

"Aaha... Whoo... Heh... Haven't... ah... laughed so hard... ohahah-ow! Ahem!" - with much effort Marika's laughter subsided. She gave Shinji an apologetic smile that somehow made him feel foolish for being angry - "Well, see, my grandparents were explorers and treasure hunters in their younger days, collecting rare items and bringing them here" - Marika's eyes seemed to shine as she reminisced - "It was great! Every time I visited them as a kid, they would tell me all these crazy stories of their adventures.
This used to be their house, you know. They converted it into a shop when they retired, not so much to sell it all, but to show it to the world. Well, as much of the world as this place gets, I guess. Everything was fair game, as long as people agreed to the prices (some of which may seem a tad ludicrous). Everything but this" - there was a resounding thump as Marika's hands slammed on top of the container.

"Why?" - Shinji voiced the obvious question

"Well that's the thing!" - Marika spread her arms "I don't know! I couldn't even open the blasted thing!"

'Then how was I able to open it then?' - Shinji thought, but before he could ask, Marika turned the box perpendicularly to him. And his breath got stuck in his throat.

Marika was saying something about no-one seeing a design like this and something about the box being somewhat indestructible, but her voice was somehow muffled. All that Shinji could hear was the sound of his own heart, and every beat was deafening. His gaze was rooted to the box. No, not the box itself, just the somewhat faded insignia that seemed to enthral him: it was in shape of a head of a bald bespectacled man, with a ridiculously large moustache with a wide toothy smile.

Even if he were to be asked a thousand times, Shinji would not have been able to answer as to why such small, insignificant and downright ridiculous thing unnerved him so. He would not be able to-

"Shinji, are you alright?"

Shinji all but jumped as Marika's hand on his shoulder snapped him out of his daze

"I-I'm sorry! I've got to go!" - Shinji managed to stammer out before dashing out.

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

It took him the best part of an hour of aimless wandering to calm down. Deciding to distract himself from any more pointless thoughts, he decided to go visit Rei.

And that was when he came to a stunning realization.

'I have no idea where Rei lives'

What he also realized was that he was in the path of a blue sports car coming towards him at incredible speed. As if on reflex, he did a picture perfect back-flip. Before he could marvel at his newly-found agility, he was hailed by a familiar voice.

"Hey fancy meeting you here"

'Oh for the love of...!'

And surely enough, not even second later he was face-to-face with none other than Misato Katsuragi.

"You know there are easier ways to kill people" - Shinji admonished her.

It was as if his words fell on deaf ears.

"So, you headed somewhere?"

"Actually..." - to his dismay, Shinji realized that in a cruel twist of fate, Misato was exactly who he needed right now. Sighing, he accepted his fate - "I am trying to find Rei's place"

"Aw isn't that sweet!" - Misato teased - "Come on, I'll give you a lift"

They drove in relative silence the whole way to the girl's apartment, something Shinji could be glad for. He had his arms folded and a blank stare the whole way not even bothering to make conversation with Misato. After a few moments Shinji felt himself nodding off it was then that dreams took hold once again

After fifty years in captivity Shadow the Hedghog stood tall and folded his arms to looking down on the one who released him. He was round fat bald man with an orange handlebar moustache with small glasses perched on his eyes and a pair of soldering goggles on top of his head, a weaponized walker-type machine behind him.

'What's that? Is that you, Sonic? Are you trying to spoil my plans again?" - spat the man.

But then he took a closer look at the black hedgehog.

"Wait a minute, you're not Sonic! This is impossible!"

"My name is Shadow. Since you were so kind to release me, my master, I will grant you one wish" spoke Shadow.

Then the alarms blared.

"Now what?!"

With his hover shoes Shadow took to the air.

"Behold the true power I possess!" stated Shadow. Then, in flash, he was gone.

Shinji felt himself being shaken awake by Misato.

"Hey. Wake up. We're here" said Misato, gesturing towards the apartment buliding. Shinji looked at the building and gasped as he looked on: it was completely rundown.

"She lives in this dump?" asked Shinji getting out of the car.
"Yeah, she does. It was the Commander's idea, apparently" replied Misato.

The boy figured that the commander - for he would NEVER acknowledge the man as his father - was just a lousy no good cheapskate in addition to being a dirt-bag. The two made their way to the top floor very cautiously. They made it to the girl's door. Before one of them could knock a breeze cracked the door open.

"She doesn't even keep her door locked? I'm going have to look into that" said Misato as Shinji made his way in, forgetting to knock. It was pretty small; uncomfortably small. He found the girl in question sitting in a chair reading a book. After a few moments he made his presence felt.

"So this is what you do all day, huh?" asked Shinji, getting the girls attention. Rei turned to look at pilot Ikari and Captian Katsurgai in her home.

"Pilot Ikari. Captain Katsuragi. How may I help you?" asked the girl in a monotone voice, placing her book in her lap.

Misato entered the small room and answered for them both

"Nothing, really. Shinji just wanted to check on you after the last attack" said Misato moving behind him. Rei looked at him trying to discern Shinji but he turned around began to walk out

"I can see you're alright. So I'll see you later" said Shinji walking out, with Misato following him out. After making their way downstairs Shinji felt the need to run again.

"Hey wait , I can give you a lift back to your apartment" said Misato. Shinji merely kept walking til Misato spoke again.

"Don't you dare walk away from me Shinji!" Misato shouted stomping her foot practically demanding he come back to her. It was then Shinji felt the need grow stronger as he pretended not to hear her. The boy kept increasing his pace. Shinji broke out in a run. The enjoyable feeling of freedom returned to him once again. But he felt more than that. It was swirl of energy rising within him as he felt it take over.

'

*Blink*

his shock he suddenly found himself none other than right in front of Marika's shop

'Holy crap! It happened again!'

Except that this time something was different. Something was burning.

'Burning?'

With alarm, Shinji glanced down, only to see that, indeed, his shoes were on fire.

And that was how a confused, bare-footed Shinji found himself once again in Marika's shop that fine afternoon.

'Hmm. I wonder'

With a few swift, resolute steps he was behind the counter once again, with the box back in his possession. Snaging a chair nearby he promptly sat down, popped the lid and took out one of the shoes. After giving is one last apprasinig look, he slid it on.

To his surprise and delight, he found the shoe quite comfortable. Without a further ado he slid on the other one and stood.

'Well this is nice' - Shinji grinned to himself as he did a little jog on the spot - 'Wonder how fast I will be in these'

It was as if the thought has flipped a switch in his brain. He suddenly felt as if his mind has been stabbed clean through, but despite the pain he found he was not able to call out. An image of him floating flashed in front of his eyes, then-

"This is the Ultimate Power!"

Suddenly, the image became a reality: he was floating! His head was practically touching the tall ceiling of the shop. It was then that he also realized that the shop actually had a second floor, which had a sort of a balcony inside, right above the main counter. A balcony he was now facing. A balcony on which there was now Marika, staring at him in mute wonder.

It must have been the loss of concentration, or the shock at the sudden realization that he has been caught red-handed. Whatever it was, the floor heading rapidly towards him was the last thing Shinji saw.
