Chapter Nine

"Who the hell are you?"

"Well, that is not a way to greet a guest"

Shinji's "guest" turned out to be a large, but seemingly stout woman with black hair and blue eyes, obviously middle age (possibly older than Marika).

Biting back a range of very distinct swear words, Shinji slowly got up and brushed himself off, the motion keeping himself busy long enough for him to lower his temper to a gentle simmer.

"Alright" - he crossed his arms - "To what do I owe the pleasure of your presence, Ms...?"

"Sachiko" - Sachiko replied, obviously missing the sarcasm of the remark - "Minami Sachiko. And..." - she dug into her somewhat oversized handbag and handed Shinji a photo of a young girl - "My niece. Ami"

"Cute" - and he meant it, ironic as that seemed to him: between her light pink hair, clear green eyes and a beautiful smile, the fact that she looked the same age as him made her all the more alluring. But there was something more: a strange sense of familiarity. 'Something that seems to come up a lot' he mused. He looked questioningly at Sachiko.

"I'm looking for her and was wondering if you saw her around here somewhere?"

Shinji handed the photo back, shaking his head. He would definitely not have missed such a face.

"Oh, I see. I'm sorry to have burdened you with this" - Sachiko was visibly deflated by her lack of success. She put the photo back in the bag and handed Shinji a small card - "Here's my number. If you see her, or if you hear anything about someone seeing her, please let me know"

Once she was gone and he was back inside, Shinji slumped tiredly against the door.

'I need sleep... and a shower... Though maybe not in that particular order' - Shinji chuckled to himself.

One hot shower later, Shinji was staring at his own reflection again, toothbrush ready in hand.

'This... this can't be real!'

The toothbrush bounced off the sink as it was dropped.

The red eyes were back.

This time, though, the eyes blinked back and with him

"Aaagh!" - Shinji woke up, screaming. Once his frenzied mind established that he was indeed awake, he slumped tiredly back, panting like he just ran a marathon. 'This... is going to be a long night' he thought grimly. But he needn't have worried. Not even a minute later he was again asleep.

(The Next Morning)

Shinji was making his way to school. Due to the lack of an alternative, he put on his shiny new shoes, surprised - and relieved - that they didn't really stand out all that much. Deciding to take it easy he casually strolled along the busy sidewalk.

'I can easily make it in no time flat ' Shinji thought, chuckling at the pun,

It feel great to have all the time in the world.

Glancing over at the other side of the road, Shinji noted it was equally busy there. One thing that stood out was a little girl wandering the side walk alone with a blue ball. Apparently she had gotten lost from her parent or guardian. Without a second thought, Shinji immediately changed his trajectory... and speed. Like a black blur, her weaved through the traffic, reaching the girl in mere moments. Just in time, too: the ball hit the pavement at an awkward angle that threw it onto the road. Or it would have, if Shinji hasn't caught it in midair.

"Thanks, alot mister!" - the girl squealed in delight, as he handed her beloved possession back.

"You're very welcome" - replied Shinji, . "Just be more careful ".Said Shinji walking away. but not before sparing a short glance at the ball.

(Later on at Lunchtime at school)

"Hey, there whacha doing"?

Shinji grumbled clo as his lunchtime nap got interrupted. He opened his eyes only to be greeted by an upside-down face, with green eyes and pink hair, of a girl who was grinning at him mischievously. One glance up told him why. Irked, he got up.

"Like what you see?" - the girl asked, giggling as she too got up. Despite standing at full height she was a tad shorter than Shinji. The top of her head only came up to his nose. Then he noticed the stuffed toy in her arms

"Aren't you too old for those kinds?" - he barely suppressed a laugh as the girl's face turned beetroot red - "I mean, come on, teddy bears? Really? "

"It's not a teddy bear it's a!" - The girl yelled at the top of her voice - "Eep!" - realizing she was drawing attention to herself in the worst possible way, she hastily clasped her hands around her mouth.

"Hey, Ami?" - Shinji has had his laughs. His face grew stern as he crossed his arms.

"Yeah ? Wait, how do you know my name? ... Oh" - her face dropped as the realization hit her.

"Ah I see you know what I'm about to say next" - Shinji's eyes were unwavering - "So; out with it"

"I... well... here's not a good place... Just, just" - and after taking a few steps, Ami turned around and ran. She yelled over her shoulder - "Just do me a favor! Don't tell her you saw me!" - She stopped momentarily to turn around - "Please!"

And just like that she was gone before he could question her.

(Several hours later)

The day had ended for the students of Tokyo-3 junior high. Shinji was already on way his home but for some reason decided to stroll through the city. As he was walking, people were starting gather on a scene not too far in front. Having enough excitement over these past couple of days, he decided to ignored it and took a detour.

Still, he could not help but get glimpses of the scene, which turned out to have been a car crash at that jewelry store he saw those rings at. The police were on the scene, some examining the wreck, some questioning the bystanders and the one that seemed to be in charge was talking to two older women in matching purple kimonos - one with violet and the other with light silver hair -, who he could guess were the owners.

He was about to take off when he noticed a glimmer in a derelict corner of an adjacent alley. Inexplicably drawn to it - all the while being wary of the feeling, as so far all instances of it have brought him nothing but trouble - he slowly walked up to find the very rings that were occupying his mind from the moment he saw them through that window.

As soon as he had them, he had half a mind to just bolt, without a hint of regret. But be what he may, a thief was definitely something he was not. In hindsight he was yet to bring the medallion to Marika. And so, after a few long minutes of contemplation, Shinji, with a heavy heart, headed towards the now destroyed store-front.

"Excuse me" - he said, walking up to one of the officers in charge of keeping all stragglers and gawkers as far away from the scene as possible - "I need to talk to the owners of that store"

"Get in line, kid" - the officer replied - "Or better yet, beat it. Whatever it is, it can wait until tomorrow"

"Now, now, officer, no need to be rude" - called out a voice. It was one of the owners. Both of them came up. With a sense of wonder, Shinji realized they were twins.

"What have you got there for us, boy?" - asked the violet haired one.

"Why, sister, it's the-!" - The silver-haired one exclaimed, apparently cutting herself off in surprise .

'Oh man, they even sound the same!' Shinji's eyes widened.

"I... found these in an alley nearby" - Shinji said, somewhat hesitantly. The glint in the twins' eyes made him extremely nervous. He hastily handed over the bracelets, clumsily accepted their thanks, and didn't bother to give a statement to the police and, as fast - but also as inconspicuously - as he could, bolted like the wind.

After a hot shower to clear his head, Shinji sat down to eat some dinner when there was a soft knock on his door.

Deciding he could munch, grumble and walk at the same time, Shinji walked up to the door.

"Who is it?"

All he got in answer to his question was another soft knock. Lamenting a lack of a peephole, he sighed and opened the door to reveal none other than Ami, with a grin on her face and a small box in her hands.

"Hi there , those two ladies who owned the jewelry shop wanted you have this". Said Ami presenting the box
