Chapter ten
"… Aren't you going to let me—HEY!"
After a brief spell of surprise, with a decidedly annoyed look on his face, Shinji slammed the door in Ami's face.
Sighing, Shinji slumped back onto the chair, going through his meal to the backdrop of rigorous thumping on the other side of the door. When all was finally nothing but silence, he sighed in relief.
But then came a sound that positively petrified him: a key turning in his lock. He turned his apprehensive gaze towards the door, which was now ajar. There she was, keys twirling on her finger, a victorious smirk on her face.
'What the…' – "… How the hell did you get those?!"
" Is that any way to greet a girl?"
Shinji simply glared. Sighing, Ami shrugged her shoulders and let herself in, closing the door behind her.
"So," – she turned to face Shinji again – "back to why I'm here" – she proffered him the box again" – seeing a lack of a reciprocating action, she shook the box slightly, giving an encouraging smile – "Come on. It won't bite… I think"
"That's very encouraging" – despite the sarcasm, Shinji couldn't help but smirk. He took the box and set it on the table. Curiosity finally overpowered caution. He ripped off the packaging paper and took off the lid. Ami leaned in, herself curious.
Inside, carefully padded in, were the rings.
"Oooh so pretty!" – Ami gasped. Shinji simply stared, dumbfounded. Snapping himself out of it, he hastily replaced the lid, taking a few deep breaths to steady himself.
'What in the hell…'
"Aren't you going to try them on?" – Ami sounded positively disappointed.
"Hey Ami…" – in desperate need for new topic, a sudden thought struck him. He turned to face her – "You never did explain…" – Ami seemed to shrink under the steadily intensifying glare, as she realized where this particular train of thought was going to take them.
"Ah! Would you look at the time! Eh-heh! Sorry for intruding! Thanks for everything! Bye!"
Next thing Shinji knew the door slammed and there were hurried steps rapidly getting more distant outside.
"Hey! You forgot to…" – he noticed that the keys were on the table – "… return the keys… H-uh" – 'What is up with that girl?'

Shinji simply glared. Sighing, Ami shrugged her shoulders and let herself in, closing the door behind her.

(P.E. at School the next day)
It's now mid-day at Tokyo-3 junior high, which usually entails the prerequisite P.E. classes. Shinji dressed in in his gym uniform, his mind still on the previous day's events, and headed outside. Almost immediately, the PE teacher called his name. It was his turn on the track, along with Toji Suzahara.
Toji Suzahara.
To say that they didn't see eye to eye would be an understatement.
Someone – Shinji suspected it was Toji's nosy friend with the camera … Kensuke? – let it slip that Shinji was indeed the pilot of that big bad purple mecha from the other night. So, of course, Shinji got a rude awakening during lunch. The only reason the clash of Toji's anger and Shinji's unapologetic bluntness didn't end in blows was because a teacher happened to be walking by.
And so now he had to endure Toji's eyes trying to burn holes in the back of his skull. Not that he cared. He had no patience for the boy's misdirected hate.
"Alright boys! Get! Set! … Go!" – the crack of the starter pistol rang through the field, drowning out the pounding of multitude of adolescent feet.
Within seconds, Shinji made it to the lead. The feeling of the wind all around him brought with it a sense of Déjà vu, which he tried his best to ignore. It was then that he heard a voice.
"Hey, Shadow! How about some real competition?"
'Huh?!'
Shinji nearly tripped from surprise when something blue appeared in front of him.
Then, just like that It was gone, only to reappear beside him.
'Hold on… you're' – Shinj's eyes widened when the image cleared up, shifting into a ghostly apparition of the very same blue hedgehog that appeared in his dreams. It smiled, gave him a thumb-up and sped forward.
Unconsciously tapping into an energy reserve he did not even know he had, Shinji put on a burst of speed. He didn't wanted to catch up to it. No. He wanted to pass it. He wanted to prove that…
I am the World's Ultimate Life Form!
Shinji's increased momentum made braking somewhat problematic as he skidded – he practically dug trenches with his heels – past the teacher practically at top speed.
No sooner that he stopped, Shinji swung his head in every direction. The hedgehog was gone. All that remained was a name, strangely clear in his mind.
'… Sonic…'
"Whoa, Ikari! What are they feeding you kids these days?" – the P.E. teacher approached him, practically starry-eyed – "How would you like to join the tra—"
"Not interested"
And with that, Shinji walked off to the changing rooms, a single crimson orb following him all the way out of the field. When the only person of interest was gone, Rei slumped back down against the wire-fence beside the pool, her face as impassive as ever.
HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
After School)
Glass and loos pebbles of granite crunched under Shinji's feet as he tentatively entered the still-kinda-destroyed from of the jewellery store.
"Why hello there" – a voice called out – "What are you doing back here?"
Shinji turned towards the source, who turned out to be one of the owners. She was clad in that same purple kimono, brushing a stray bit of her indigo hair with her rather pale skinned hand as her shockingly yellow eyes homed in on his like torches.
After a brief moment of surprise, Shinji's eyes hardened.
"I'm looking for something" – he said, his voice guarded.
"And what would that be?"
Instead of answering, Shinji threw the box down on the floor, and crossed his arms. As the box skidded to a halt at her feet, the woman picked it up, cradling it as one would a precious child.
"Reizu? I heard someone come in… ? Is everything alri-" – from somewhere further inside the store, the other woman emerged. She paused, surprised, when she saw him – "Oh"
Shinji was again struck by how almost identical the two were. The only difference were the colours of the hair – silver-grey with purple highlights – and the eyes – a royal shade of purple.
"I know, I know, we look young for our age" – Reizu commented demurely, twirling a strand with her finger.
"Hush Reizu" – the other woman admonished. She approached Shinji – "My name is Ruju. This is my sister Reizu. And I think you are looking for answers, yes?"
Shinji simply shrugged.
"Well, see—"
" Hey! Ruju! Reizu!" – called a familiar voice from outside
'It can't be!'
"Hello~~ Anyone he—Ah!"
It was as if the world slowed down to a crawl, a millisecond at a time, as Shinji turned to come face to face with none other than the pink-haired menace that has been tormenting him not so long ago.
"You!" – Shinji called out, confusion mixing with anger at all the headaches she's caused him.
"You!" – Ami's whole disposition was of surprise, rapidly descending into horror.
Ruju groaned exasperatedly, putting a hand to her forehead, while Reizu giggled, amused.
The whole incident lasted only for a split moment. Without any hesitation, Ami turned on her heel and broke into a dash.
'Oh no you don't!' – Shinji sped off after her. He's had enough. This time he was getting answers. No matter what.
The two sisters looked at each other, each with a satisfied smile on her face. Reizu giggled again.
In hindsight, Shinji was impressed with the girl's speed. Her legs were a blur as she tried, but failed to gain distance between them, which Shinji rapidly closed.
He overtook her and stopped abruptly, turning around to face her. Planting his feet into the ground he put his hands out as Ami crashed into him like a runaway train. Holding her at an arm's length, he didn't get to even open his mouth before she pushed him away.
"N-no…" – every bit of the girl's body seemed to shake. She hugged herself as if cold.
All and any anger Shinji had dissipated immediately NO!" – the girl yelled with such force, Shinji actually had to cover his ears. From somewhere came the tell-tale sound of glass breaking. The next moment Shinji looked up, the girl was gone.
Only through pure instinct did he manage to dodge what came next.
She smashed down with a meteor-like impact. There was fire of desperation in her eyes. In her hands was a mallet with a pink head of ridiculously gigantic proportions and a white handle as long as Ami was tall.
'W-what the hell is that? Where did she even-?' – "Whoa!"
Without a moment's hesitation, Ami charged. Her speed and ferocity surprised Shinji enough that he could not completely avoid the blow. He winced as the edge of the mallet bruised his ribcage. When he recovered from his near-trip he barely –yet this time fully – avoided the next swing.
"Ami—Hey!—Come on no—Whoop!—I'm not—" – '… Not what? 'Not going to hurt you?' Like she's the one to be afraid of getting hurt… Wait…'
Then he realized it. She was crying. This girl, as she was bearing down on him like a madman, was crying her heart out like the scared girl that she was. And that was not all…
"I WON'T! I WON'T! I WON'T!" – the chant accompanied each swing in a disturbingly fitting tempo.
'OK this went on long enough!'
Mustering up his courage – for as much her sake as his – Shinji dashed forward. After a particularly limbo-like dodge, he lashed out like a viper. Ami yelped in pain as he struck her wrist and let go of the mallet. Quick as lightning, Shinji went for the next step of his plan… Only to fail .
'Holy hell! How heavy is this thing?! How strong is she?!' – he turned his somewhat fearful gaze towards Ami.
Relieved of her weapon, and with her apparent bloodlust gone, Ami collapsed onto the ground, crying uncontrollably. Shinji felt strange, like all tension was released from him, too. There she was, a normal girl, her face in her hands, tears streaming from behind her palms, the ears on top her head wiggling this way and that.
'Wait, what? EARS? … No, no, later, we're bound to get undue attention if we don't get out of here soon' – they were lucky that Tokyo was so severely underpopulated, and the stretch of road they were on was completely deserted at the time.
Sighing, Shinji approached Ami carefully. At his footsteps, Ami froze like a leaf. Realizing this, Shinji stopped. Putting his hands up – because he could see her watching through her fingers – he crouched down beside her.
"Ami, I have no idea what just happened" – he slowly said, trying to keep his eyes off her still-wiggling ears – "But we need to get—"
The ears, too, froze, as if in anticipation.
"—back to the shop. I'm sure you don't want to be held accountable for—" – Shinji let his voice trail off.
Ever-so-slowly, the hands came down, revealing the tear-stained cheeks and the shiny green orbs, that were now surveying the multitude of small craters all across the ground and the walls around them, leading haphazardly – yet, strangely, almost systematically – towards the largest one, now a solid distance away from them. She turned back to shinji, only to drop her gaze apologetically.
"Now, if you've noticed, I'm pretty quick on my feet" – Shinji chuckled nervously – "If you'll let me, I can piggy-back you and we'll be gone before anyone even knows we were here in the first place. Ok?"
After a tense few moments, Ami nodded her approval. She took Shinji's proffered hand and got up, dusting herself off. With a flick of her wrist – and a sudden small gust of wind – both the hammer, and the ears, were gone.
Only seconds later, Ami was clambering off Shinji's back inside the shop. Ruju and Reizu – who was still holding the box – were waiting for them.
"Quickly, children. This way" – Reizu urged as she led them deeper. A small bit later, they were in an expansive lounge room, decorated in a decidedly traditional Japanese way, complete with elaborate and colourful wallpapers and a low, long table, flanked by a pair of matching rugs. The twins knelt down on one side, while Ami joined – much to his surprise – Shinji on the other. Her disposition was decidedly conflicted.
And so they remained. Minutes passed, and the only sounds were that of their breaths, though Shinji could've sworn Reizu was practically purring as she kept cradling the box.
Deciding once again that patience was not a virtue he had… patience for, Shinji turned to Ami.
"She's not my aunt" – Ami said, her voice… tired. Noting the lack of response, she turned to face him – "The reason I've been avoiding that woman. She's not my aunt. Not really"
"That's not a nice thing to say" – Ruju admonished
"Well, she's not! Mom and her aren't really sisters, she's just-!"
"Ami!" – Ruju raised her voice above Ami's – which, in itself was quite a feat – and once the girl quieted down – "If that were true, then what does it make Reizu and I? Hmm?"
"You're step-sisters?" – Shinji couldn't help but blurt out.
"Why, yes" – Reizu replied, amused – "Ruju was adopted into our family when she was quite young" – she cocked her head – "Or was I adopted into hers? I quite forget" – she shrugged – "Doesn't matter now, I suppose" – she giggled. Ruju simply shook her head with a somewhat embarrassed smirk.
"But that is beside the point" – Ruju grew serious again – "Ami's aunt wants to take Ami away from here, to which all three of us vehemently disagree"
"But why?" – Shinji aimed the question at Ami. He decided that since this whole needless mystery seemed to surround her, she would be the one to shine the light in the darkness.
But Ami simply looked away, hugging herself again. Undeterred, Shinji remained silent, letting his expectant stare bore into her skull. Then, the girl's shoulders sank, as if she gave up.
"It's easier to show you" – she said quietly and got up. Turning to face him, she did the same wrist movement from earlier and amidst the same eerie gust of wind – that was apparently omnidirectional and originating from her own body – there they were: a pair of pink furry ears on top of her head and in her hand the giant mallet, which she lowered down, its head hitting the floor with a heavy thud – once again reaffirming both its immense weight and the girl's matching strength.
Shinji simply sat staring up at her, mouth open.
' How can this be'? thought Shinji
"Well?" – noting his lack of response, Ami grew decidedly annoyed – "Well don't just sit there ogling me like some eye-candy! Tell me what you think!"
"It fits" – Shinji answered simply. And he meant it. The combination was so outlandish as to render it almost laughable, but in some strange twist, it all did fit together rather perfectly. 'A perfect imperfection' – Shinji bemused, smirking slightly.
In a blink of an eye, Ami was back to normal and was now sitting with her back to him. She turned to face him briefly.
"Perv!" – she exclaimed suddenly sticking her tongue out.
Sighing in relief – the girl was back to her old self, it seems – Shinji turned to the twins. Now came the important part.
"Ah yes, boys are never in control of their lusts are they?" – Reizu commented, to which Ruju solemnly agreed.
Shinji barely resisted the urge to snarl.
"So, Shinji, how are the dreams ?"
The question stunned Shinji into dumb silence.
"How are the dreams?" – Ruju repeated her question – "Are they getting any clearer?"
"H-how… How did you know?"
"Because you're the same as me" – replied Ami. Shinji turned to look at her. She now had her chin on her knees, hands wrapped around the top of her shins; which, of course, meant that after an inevitable glance down, Shinji hastily turned away again – though not before noting the girl's mischievous grin.
'Oh, she's feeling alright now. No mistake' – despite his misgivings, he was still quite relieved at the thought.
"Spirits" – Ruju answered the unspoken question.
"Spirits?"
"Aye" – Reizu reaffirmed – " the spirtits"
" Spirits? What Spirits What are you talking about "? asked Shinji
