On the night of Wednesday, November 6th, 1991. Harry, Amy, Susan, Hannah, Sirius, Amelia, and Heather had just finished an excellent dinner of spicy chicken strips, tater tots, and Jim Beam when they heard a squeaky voice out front cry "Morsmordre!"
Amy, Susan, Hannah, Sirius, Amelia, and Heather felt their insides churn as they heard that word, though Harry didn't.
"Someone's conjured the Dark Mark outside!" said Heather in a voice that oozed panic.
At that, Harry now understood, he simply hadn't known how the Dark Mark was conjured, though he did know what it was.
"That squeaky voice!" recognized Sirius, "That's Peter Pettigrew out there. It is Peter Pettigrew who has conjured the Dark Mark."
At those words, Amelia immediately Apparated out front to find that all too familiar creepy green skull with its serpent protruding from its mouth.
There didn't seem to be anyone outside, but through the light of the image in the sky, Amelia could make out a rat slowly moving around on the grass.
Instinctively, Amelia pulled her wand out of her right hand pocket with her right hand and pointed it at the rat.
"Stupefy!" cried Amelia instantly.
Amelia cautiously walked up to the now stunned rat. Examining it carefully, Amelia saw that it indeed was missing a toe, the very thing that Sirius had warned her to look for when trying to find Peter Pettigrew.
Amelia Apparated herself back inside to the kitchen table they had eaten at and said to Sirius, "Look over this rat carefully, Is he Peter Pettigrew?"
Amelia handed the stunned rat to Sirius, who examined every inch of it with as much careful inspection as he possibly could.
"When he had finished, Sirius had an angry, almost scary look on his face.
"Yes, Amelia, " confirmed Sirius, "That's the one. Can we order him to be given the Dementor's Kiss and be done with it?"
"He will have to go through the process of a trial, that's the law, " said Amelia clearly, "I wonder why he conjured the Dark Mark here though?"
"Remember, Voldemort knows we're here, " Harry reminded them, "Heather being the Secret Keeper can keep people out of this house, but not out of the yard. The necessity of having a Secret Keeper was shown to us a while back when Voldemort tried and failed to get into the house. I think Peter wanted to do two things. Terrify the shit out of us and make a statement that Voldemort still has supporters. Specifically, a statement that Harry Potter didn't really defeat Lord Voldemort. That's why he chose the house I'm staying at to fire the Dark Mark into the sky."
"It's also possible, " mused Susan, "That he was trying to appeal to Voldemort himself. If Voldemort doesn't know that Peter is alive, and if Peter suspects as much, conjuring the Dark Mark would be a way for Peter to show Voldemort that he still supported Voldemort. He'd count on Voldemort to track down where this Dark Mark originated from and when Voldemort learned the truth, he'd know Peter was still on his side."
"Why wouldn't he go to Voldemort directly then, if that's what he wanted?" inquired Harry.
"Because " supplied Hannah, "Voldemort is NOT very trusting at all. Peter may feel that he needs to prove his loyalty to Voldemort before he can personally approach Voldemort. Furthermore, many of Voldemort's supporters blame Peter for Voldemort's downfall. Peter himself may have feared Voldemort's retribution and felt the need to show his allegiance before being welcomed back into the fold by Voldemort."
"But why risk exposure by conjuring the Dark Mark here?" mused Amy.
"Don't underestimate the symbolism here, " answered Harry, "If Susan and Hannah are right about Peter appealing to Voldemort, then nothing would placate Voldemort more than proving oneself to be against Harry Potter. Remember again that it's pretty well known now that I live here right now."
"And Peter was never the sharpest knife in the drawer," added Sirius, "He isn't the most intelligent person anyway and he sucks at actually thinking things through."
"He played right into our hands without realizing it, " smirked Heather.
"Yes, he has, " said Amelia very seriously, "We've captured him and I'm calling an emergency meeting of the Wizengamot tomorrow to deal with Peter. He will remain stunned until his case is dealt with."
"He's a serious escape threat, " said Sirius warningly, "As soon as he can be convicted, Peter should either be IMMEDIATELY given the Dementor's Kiss or IMMEDIATELY sent through the Death Veil. Don't delay. Don't hesitate. Don't take any chances. As soon as Peter can be disposed of, dispose of him."
