A/N: This chapter reveals how, when, and why Harry's paternal grandparents died. Any canon from Rowling or Harry Potter Wiki about their names or how they died is ignored here. I have created my own names for them and my own story of their deaths.
On the evening of Sunday, September 13th, 1992, at 10 P.M. Skyward School of Practical Sorcery time, Harry, Amy, Susan, and Hannah were sitting at the Yellow Quartet's table in the Eating and Meeting Hall while Sirius, Remus, Amelia, and Heather were sitting at the table next to them.
"So," explained Heather, "I've put up temporary Privacy Wards on the Eating and Meeting Hall so that we can talk tonight without being overheard or interrupted. "
"We've said for a while now that with the eight of us being a family, we would learn and know as much about each other's background's as possible, " piped up Amelia.
"That's why we are here tonight," said Remus in a crystal clear voice. "
"Harry and Amy, you two will be quite interested to know something about how your lives intersect, " said Sirius seriously.
"Harry?" asked Remus, "Do you know how and why your grandparents died?"
"No, said Harry honestly, "I know that Voldemort killed my father and that my mother sacrificed herself for me by allowing Voldemort to kill her instead of me and that her sacrifice protected and saved me. I know my grandparents died before my parents, but I don't know how, why, or even when they died."
"That's why we have gathered here tonight, " said Amelia in a businesslike voice, "Harry, you are going to learn tonight how and why your paternal grandparents died. And, Amy, this is EXTREMELY relevant to you as well."
"So, " said Heather matter of factly, "James's parents, Marshawn and Evanna, were members of the original Order of the Phoenix."
"Their role in the First Wizarding War against Voldemort was muggle protection," explained Remus, "Voldemort and his Death Eaters were known to engage in mass muggle killings, often just for fun."
"Muggle protection often involved the simple acts of performing protective spells and charms over muggle houses and dwellings, " said Amelia slowly, "While Voldemort and his Death Eaters often succeeded at mass muggle killings, they failed at many others because witches and wizards from the Order of the Phoenix assigned to the task of muggle protection placed spells and charms over muggle homes and dwellings preventing magic, witches, and wizards from accessing them."
"Marshawn and Evanna did more than their fair share of that and saved innumerable muggle lives in the process, " said Remus proudly, "But now, it's important to understand a special talent of Marshawn and Evanna: they were the two best ever at Disillusionment Charms."
Harry smiled.
"That's cool!" remarked Harry.
"It sounds cool, and it is in and of itself, " said Sirius seriously, "But Marshawn and Evanna would eventually put this talent to very serious use. "
"Marshawn and Evanna were involved in an incident where they might have been too late," said Remus with a mixture of sadness and pride, "But the incident ended in a heroic act of noble self-sacrifice."
"So," explained Sirius, "The Order of the Phoenix had received intelligence that Voldemort was planning to attack a muggle house and Marshawn and Evanna were assigned to go place protective spells and charms on said muggle house. Marshawn and Evanna went to the house, but Voldemort had just beaten them there and gotten inside. Marshawn and Evanna, thinking quickly and intuitively, performed the Disillusionment Charm on themselves and blended in with the light coming from the lights on the Christmas Tree. This was in December you see. Well, the inhabitants of the house were a young married couple. Voldemort raised his wand and aimed a Killing Curse at the young man; however, the Disillusioned Marshawn stepped in front of the man and took the curse instead. Evanna then performed the Disillusionment Charm on Marshawn's dead body, and he took on the appearance of the muggle Voldemort intended to kill and placed the Disillusionment Charm on the muggle man so that he blended in with the Christmas lights. Evanna then undid the first Disillusionment Charm upon herself performed a Disillusionment Charm on the muggle woman Voldemort intended to kill so she blended in with the Christmas lights. Evanna then put a Disillusionment Charm upon herself to make herself take on the appearance of the muggle woman Voldemort wanted to kill. Voldemort killed Evanna believing she was the muggle and left. The Disillusionment Charms upon the muggles wore off after a few hours and Ministry wizards arrived to place permanent protective spells and charms upon the house and wipe their memories. The muggle man and woman were Andrew and Amanda Alworth. Amanda Alworth was in the first trimester of a pregnancy carrying the baby who would become Amy Alworth."
Harry, Amy, Susan, and Hannah sat silently taking this information in. Harry and Amy both had quiet tears coming down their cheeks. Pride, Sadness. Pure emotion.
A few minutes and a few nanoseconds later, Harry and Amy, both still crying, stood up and embraced each other.
"So, " said Harry proudly, "I've always been proud of my paternal grandparents and of my dad for opening up their home to Sirius when Sirius's home life was not good. That's friendship man. But, to know they willingly sacrificed themselves for a young couple they didn't even know. That's selflessness man. Hearing this story hurts, but it also fills me with pride in my paternal grandparents."
"As it should, " said Sirius sincerely, "Marshawn and Evanna were wonderful people."
"There's also this awkward side though, " said Harry uncomfortably, "One of my BFF's, my number one BFF if I had to choose, only exists because of my grandparents' deaths. "
"I feel that as well," said Amy bluntly, "The idea that I only exist because my BFF's grandparents sacrificed themselves for people they didn't even know is definitely odd. I kind of feel a little guilty as well. My existence is one of reasons Harry has no family left."
"Amy, don't," said Harry firmly, "There's nothing to feel guilty about. You weren't alive at the time and you had no say in the matter. At any rate, if I understand the characters of Marshawn and Evanna Potter correctly, they'd tell us that what they died for was worth it and to embrace our friendship."
"Exactly," said Sirius.
Harry and Amy embraced again as everyone else looked on.
