DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT OWN HARRY POTTER
Amelia Bones had just become a member of the DMLE when she had met Sirius Black. Although she and Lily had been good friends in Hogwarts, they had not been that close. However, some time after meeting Sirius, they had started dating, and soon, their relationship had blossomed.
Through Sirius, Amelia had strengthened her friendship with Lily and had become close to James, Peter and Remus. Amelia had even joined the Order of the Phoenix and had fought alongside Sirius against Bellatrix Lestrange many times.
When Harry was born, Amelia had been there and had even held him. She had witnessed Lily asking Sirius to be Harry's godfather and his enthusiastic agreement.
Then, her family had been murdered by Voldemort and his Death Eaters and her niece Susan had become an orphan.
And then, James and Lily had been found by Voldemort and murdered but Voldemort himself had mysteriously disappeared after trying to kill Harry followed by an explosion in Godric's Hollow. This had led to Harry being hailed as the Boy-Who-Lived.
Dumbledore had then sent Harry to live with his Muggle aunt and uncle saying that it was safer for him.
Shortly afterwards, Sirius Black had been accused of betraying the Potters as their secret keeper and murdering Peter Pettigrew plus twelve Muggles. He had been arrested at once and shipped to Azkaban by the head of DMLE, Bartemius a.k.a Barty Crouch.
Amelia had been shocked to hear about Sirius' betrayal. It had been hard for her to take in that information. That evening, she had held Susan in her arms and had cried thinking, "Why did you do that? Why? I thought you loved them, loved me! Harry loved you so much! Why? I can't believe this! Please, let it be wrong!"
She had visited Crouch in his office and had asked about Sirius' trial and the reasons that he had given. Crouch, a ruthless and ambitious man, had proceeded to proudly tell her that there had been no need of a trial since Sirius had openly said that he had killed the Potters plus the fact that Sirius was from a dark family. This had left her shocked and had led her, the just person that she was to repeatedly beg him for a trial or at least, a proper interrogation. Crouch had refused saying that there was no need. In fact, he had made it hard for her to even try to visit Azkaban.
Amelia had asked Dumbledore about Harry multiple times and he had told her each time, "Harry is better off growing up away from all that fame. He's safe with his Muggle relatives. He needs to have a normal childhood before coming to Hogwarts."
Amelia had felt some bitterness each time she heard that, but she had not been able to connect with Harry at all.
Finally, two and a half years after that fateful Halloween night, Crouch, fed up of constantly hearing Amelia beg for a trial for Sirius, had finally agreed to give him one, but only at the end of the month of July. Given that it was now the beginning of the month of May, 1984, it would be a few more months before Sirius would be tried. Crouch had also given her permission to inform Sirius about his upcoming trial but had declared that only a few minutes would be given to her to speak with him as he was a high security level prisoner.
Amelia had gone to Azkaban that same day and had marched up to Sirius' cell.
She had seen him and had been horrified at his plight.
**************************CONVERSATION STARTS*********************
Amelia Bones stood in front of Sirius Black in his cell. The prisoner was looking gaunt and weak, curled up into a ball in a corner.
She moved a little closer and sternly spoke, "Black, wake up."
Sirius slowly lifted his face to see who had spoken and his eyes widened with surprise for a moment.
"Amy," Sirius slowly and weakly spoke, "is that you?"
"Don't think of trying to woo me Black!" Amelia stated coldly before continuing, "After two and a half years, the Ministry of Magic has finally decided to give you a trial. At the end of July this year, you will be tried for your crimes."
Sirius nodded and murmured, "I deserve this. I as good as betrayed them."
Suddenly, Amelia moved closer to Sirius and knelt down in front of him. With tears starting to stream from her eyes, she whispered painfully to him, "Please Sirius, please tell me this is all a mistake. Please just tell me that you didn't mean to betray James and Lily! Please tell me that Voldemort forced the information out of you!"
Sirius looked at her before croaking, "I as good as betrayed them. I suggested using Peter as the secret keeper. Now, because of me, they're dead. I deserve this for having caused their deaths."
Amelia's eyes widened and she exclaimed, "Peter Pettigrew! So you didn't betray them! There is still hope for you Sirius! Now I just know that you're innocent, I just feel it, but Crouch just won't take my word for it."
Just then, a security guard outside shouted, "Madam Bones, your time's up. Please come out immediately."
Amelia held Sirius' hands and whispered, "I have to go. I sincerely hope you are declared innocent and set free soon."
Just as she was about to stand up, Sirius suddenly grabbed her hands and said, "Harry, my godson, is he alright? Is he safe?"
Amelia opened her mouth to say something but Sirius spoke first tears flowing from his eyes, "Please, just do one thing for me, just check up on him for me. Please make sure my godson's ok."
************************CONVERSATION ENDS************************
This had happened just the previous day, and that morning, remembering Sirius' request, she had decided to spy on Harry and his relatives. Luckily, Sirius had told her that Harry's Muggle relatives, the Dursleys whom she had heard about from Lily, lived in Little Whinging, Surrey.
Leaving Susan in the care of Mr. Abbot and Mrs. Abbot whose daughter Hannah was a good friend of Susan's, she had come to Surrey and after asking a few people, had located the Dursleys' house.
Putting on an invisibility cloak which she had somehow managed to procure, she had sneaked into the backyard and had decided to observe whatever happened without interfering or even making an appearance. Dumbledore had told her that Harry's aunt and uncle did not want any wizards or witches around and that it was best for Harry's safety. She had heard about Petunia's and Vernon's resentment towards magic from Lily already so she had decided that it would not do to try and even talk to them. If Harry needed to be safe, he needed to be safe. If this was the way, it was the way.
She had looked through the window and had been quite shocked to see a nearly four year old boy, looking more like three than four, cooking eggs without any adults standing nearby, and had been appalled when a thin woman with a horse like face had verbally abused the child after he had burned his hand and broken a plate.
She had been even more horrified when she had seen a fat boy called Dudley beat up the small boy, Harry, and then lie to his mother that Harry had hit him. The woman, Petunia had cruelly pushed Harry away and had called him a freak when he had tried to explain himself and hug her for comfort and her husband, a huge man with a thick moustache had cruelly beaten him up and had then spoken cruelly to him before pushing him into a cupboard.
She had nearly come out from under her invisibility cloak when she had seen Harry being bullied and punished simply for trying to eat something. And finally, Harry had been locked in his cupboard after a round of insults and slaps.
And now while the household was asleep, Amelia was standing right in the front porch of No. 4, Privet Drive, having taken off her cloak.
She couldn't believe that Harry was being treated like that. It was just too cruel. This was abuse. She surely would never have pushed Susan away like how Petunia had cruelly rejected Harry, even if Susan had done something wrong.
It was around 10:30 pm. Amelia was still standing, unsure of what to do.
And then she heard a scream.
Harry had just had another nightmare and had woken up. In the heat of the moment, he had accidently banged his head against the wall and had started to cry.
As he was crying, he heard heavy footfalls and knew what that meant.
Sure enough, the door to his cupboard was wrenched open and Harry was pulled out by a furious Vernon who growled at Harry before yelling, "HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I TOLD YOU NOT TO DISTURB US BOY?"
Harry screamed as Vernon dragged him out and cried out, "I'll be good, please Uncle Vernon; I'll be good! I'm sorry! Please don't hurt me! I'm sorry!"
Vernon pinned Harry down to the floor, held his neck and raised his hand yelling, "SORRY ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH YOU FREAK!"
Suddenly there was the sound of the door being opened and someone rushing in crying out, "NO! DEPULSO!"
Vernon found himself being flung away from Harry through the corridor and landing uncomfortably in the sitting room.
Harry was bawling in terror because of what had just happened when he suddenly felt a pair of arms wrapping themselves around him and a female voice saying, "Harry! I've got you baby! I'll never let them hurt you ever again! Harry my poor baby, I've got you now! Baby, baby, my baby!"
Amelia, having heard what was going on, had decided that she couldn't hold back any longer. Ignoring what Dumbledore had said, she had rushed in and upon seeing Vernon pinning Harry down to the floor, ready to beat him, she had cast a banishing charm on that walrus of a man before proceeding to envelop Harry in her arms and comfort him.
As she held him, Petunia suddenly came down the stairs and screeched in horror upon beholding the scene in front of her. Vernon got up and strode over to Amelia shouting, "Who are you?! How dare you enter our house at this time of the night and harass us! I demand you leave at once or else I shall call the police! And you boy, get back to your cupboard!"
Harry who had calmed down to the extent of just sobbing, whimpered and wrapped his arms around Amelia's neck, hoping that he wouldn't be pushed away.
Amelia held Harry tightly and kissed his cheeks and forehead before standing up and glaring at Vernon and Petunia.
"HOW DARE YOU," she yelled, "HOW DARE YOU KEEP LILY AND JAMES' SON IN A CUPBOARD AND ABUSE HIM! HOW COULD YOU TREAT YOUR OWN NEPHEW LIKE THIS?! LILY NEVER DID A THING TO YOU AND EVEN IF SHE DID, WHAT RIGHT DID YOU HAVE TO TREAT HARRY SO CRUELLY?!"
Petunia trembled and spoke, "You're one of those freaks! Dumbledore said that…"
"Forget what Dumbledore said," Amelia growled, "You are not fit to be parents."
Vernon bellowed, "How dare you question our parenting methods and accuse us of abuse! That boy deserved what he got for bullying my Dudders and being such a bad boy!"
Placing Harry down for a moment, Amelia walked up to Vernon and before he could do anything, she punched him in his face yelling, "It was your precious 'Dudders' that beat up Harry and trampled those flowers. And you called him a freak and abused him when he tried to explain himself."
She then turned to Petunia and spoke coldly, "And what did you do? You, who should have at least hugged him or listened to him when he needed it, cruelly pushed him away!"
Petunia, now at the bottom of the stairs suddenly spoke, "You leave my husband and son out of this."
Amelia slapped her and hissed, "Why should I? You stood by and did nothing when they beat him. You said all sorts of things that no child should ever suffer from hearing. Who's the real freak? Someone who has a talent that you don't have? Or someone who abuses an innocent child locks him in a cupboard and starves him?"
Amelia picked up Harry who was still weeping and growled, "I'm taking him away from here. And by the way, soon after Sirius' trial, I'll be seeing you in court."
Vernon and Petunia paled instantly. Petunia stuttered, "But… you can't, I mean, we are his legal guardians."
Amelia replied, "Well I am a member of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, but that doesn't mean I can't be more ruthless than a Death Eater when it comes to you two. If it wasn't for the authorities, I'd hex you till you begged for mercy. But I won't. But don't think this is the last you'll see of me."
And turning on her heel and carrying Harry who by now had stopped crying and was resting his head on her shoulder, she exited the house.
Vernon and Petunia looked at each other. With the door open all this while, they could only hope that none of the neighbors had spied on them, otherwise, their reputation would be dragged into the mud.
Amelia walked a good distance away from Privet Drive and came to a park nearby. Sitting down on a bench, she held Harry and rocked him in her arms side to side. She softly whispered in his ear, "Sleep my baby, sleep. Don't cry. I'll protect you."
A few minutes later, she looked at Harry who was now fast asleep and kissed his forehead where there was a lightning bolt shaped scar.
She then got up and apparated to a quiet suburban neighborhood called Park Lane near London, a partly magical neighborhood, although mostly Muggle. The Abbots lived there too just a few houses away from Amelia's house, No. 9, the Bones Residence.
Just after reaching the front porch, Amelia looked at Harry to make sure he was alright. To her relief, he was fast asleep, seemingly uninterrupted by the apparation.
She looked up at the night sky and thought about James and Lily, dead, unable to be there for Harry. Choking back a sob, she said, "I'll take care of Harry, Lily and James. I'll take care of him."
Bones Residence was quite a nice two story house. There was a living room on the left side upon entering and just beyond that was a dining room connected to a kitchen. A staircase just beyond the dining room led to a corridor which had four bedrooms, one belonging to Amelia, another one belonging to Susan and the other two as guestrooms. There was also a playroom for kids and a library. Of course there were bathrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs.
Amelia went inside the house and straight away headed for her bedroom. Placing Harry in the bed, she wondered whether it would be practical to pick up Susan now or in the morning, but ultimately decided to just bring her home now itself. After all, she hadn't planned to have Susan sleep over with Hannah, and she had told the Abbots that she would probably pick her up late at night due to an 'important matter'.
Locking Harry in the bedroom, she quickly went over to the Abbot Residence and picked up Susan who was fast asleep. Luckily, the Abbots did not question her as to why she was so late. By the time Amelia got Susan into her own bedroom, it was already 11:30.
She then went to her own bedroom and proceeded to change into some nightclothes before getting into bed. She wrapped her arms around Harry and whispered words of comfort before closing her eyes with Harry fast asleep in her arms.
Meanwhile, in one of the higher worlds, James and Lily looked down upon Amelia and Harry.
James said to Lily, "I wish we had appointed a godmother. It would have been easier for both Amelia and Harry if we had just made her godmother."
Lily choked back a sob and said, "I wish I could just murder Petunia and Vernon for what they did to my baby. How could Dumbledore have not seen this happening? And why didn't Arabella Figg spy on the Dursleys more closely?"
James said, "Soon, Sirius will be free and Harry will be raised by both Sirius and Amelia."
Lily wiped her eyes and looking at Amelia prayed, "Amy, please take care of my child."
James hugged her and whispered, "She'll take care of him now, and she'll love him like her own."
