DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT OWN HARRY POTTER.
Harry and Susan had read some of the new books while Remus had helped Amelia cook dinner and watch the kids. During dinnertime, Remus had told Harry several things about James. He had also tried to introduce Harry to quidditch but the latter had been unable to understand anything except that it was played on brooms and was a little bit like soccer. Amelia had then said that she'd help Harry with flying by using one of Susan's toy brooms (there were two). Susan had looked quite delighted, while Amelia had said that they'd have to be careful and not crash inside the house.
After dinner, the kids had proceeded to brush their teeth. Remus had then read a story to them, performing several voice impressions that had amused Harry and Susan. After the story, Amelia had put the kids to bed with hugs and kisses, telling them to call her if they had a nightmare.
She was now sitting with Remus in the living room on a sofa right opposite the fireplace. Another sofa was adjacent and perpendicular to the first one. (Amelia had sat on the second one holding her sleepy toddlers in the afternoon). Right opposite to where they two were sitting, there was an armchair.
Remus spoke, "I'm personally glad that Harry is away from those horrible Dursleys. You're making a good mother."
Amelia smiled and said, "I love both of them like my own. Harry made both Susan and I happy. And I'm so glad I brought Harry here and took him under my wing."
Her expression then changed to one of pain and she continued, "However, I should have checked up on him myself earlier. I should have somehow found out. Perhaps Minerva McGonagall would have known and told me the location. Even Sirius didn't know the exact location of the Dursleys, just the region Surrey. But the main point is that if I had tried harder, he would have been saved from two and half full years of abuse."
Remus said, "But finally, you found out and you took Harry away from there. You saved him. At least it was only two and a half years. It could have been more; Perhaps four, five, six, or until Harry turns 11. But now, Harry has quite many years before that day comes to have a lovely childhood."
Amelia said, "The day that I spied on the Dursleys, I shouldn't have waited for a whole day. Instead, I should have just acted earlier. I hoped that they would show at least a small sign of love, perhaps by talking to him about the afternoon, telling him to explain himself, hearing him out and then perhaps giving him friendly pats if not more. Of course, I should have just taken him away straight after seeing Petunia and Vernon handling him so cruelly in the afternoon."
With tears coming to her eyes, she continued, "I felt like a monster for just doing nothing by the end of the day. When I heard Harry crying in the night and his cries for mercy, I just couldn't stand by and do nothing! But I should have done something sooner that day! Lily and James would have acted sooner, Sirius too. What kind of motherly figure am I?"
Remus hugged her and said, "While I do agree that it was not right to wait until the night and that you should have acted sooner that day, I do not feel that you are a monster and not a suitable motherly figure. If Lily had James had still been alive, Harry would not have been shipped off to the Dursleys in the first place. And finally, you did save Harry when you realized that he was being abused and took him under your wing. I'm sure Lily and James would be proud of you."
He breathed before continuing, "If they had appointed a godmother, I think it would have been you."
Amelia looked at Remus and said, "I'll take care of him, no matter what. I may not be his official godmother, but I will be his godmother because I love him. He thinks that I actually am his godmother and I'm not going to break his heart by telling him that I'm not."
Remus smiled at that.
After a few moments, he asked, "By the way, does Dumbledore know about Harry's new living arrangements?"
Amelia responded, "No. Dumbledore was the one who placed Harry with the Dursleys. If I tell him right now, he'll just try to send Harry back to them. It'll be better to tell him after becoming Harry's legal guardian. Although I'm a member of the DMLE, the process is not going to be easy with Crouch around."
Remus said, "But at some point, Dumbledore will have to know. And I'm sure there are others that will understand, Minerva for instance."
Amelia nodded and said, "Perhaps."
She remained silent for a few moments before suddenly turning to Remus and asking, "Remus, there's something I really need to ask you. I'll have to go to work tomorrow. Would you be able to watch Harry and Susan for me?"
Remus was surprised and he asked, "Are you sure about this?"
Amelia replied, "Most of the time, Hannah's parents take care of Susan, but with Harry here, it'll be better if you're around. You know him better than the Abbotts do and you'll be able to explain everything to them. Yesterday, Mrs. Abbott seemed to be quite understanding; seeing Harry as a child rather than as a 'messiah', but Mr. Abbott nearly fawned over him, calling him the 'Boy-Who-Lived'. Luckily, his wife smacked his arm."
Remus said, "I don't know how exactly they'll feel about this, but I guess if we meet, it should be fine. And I'm more than willing to watch Harry and Susan as long as it's not a full moon night or the day after."
Amelia smiled and said, "Thank You Remus. I imagine Harry will be quite upset when I leave for the Ministry. Having someone that he's known will help. Plus, Susan seemed comfortable with you in the park."
Remus said, "I really do need to meet the Abbotts. I assume you'll want to let them know why Harry's here."
Amelia replied, "I do intend to let them know. But first, make sure that they promise not to fawn over Harry because of his title. And make sure that they say they won't go around telling tales to the public. I don't want this to be publicized."
Remus replied, "You have my word. Do you mind if I tell Minerva though?"
Amelia said, "I'd rather tell her myself. If she asks you, just say that he's safe and tell her to come to me."
"Okay," Remus replied.
He then turned to Amelia and said, "I guess it's time for me to turn in. I'll definitely need to be fresh and awake tomorrow, especially if I am to let the two of them use their toy brooms."
Amelia replied, "Yes, you definitely should get some sleep."
They both got up and hugged each other, wishing each other good night before Remus used the fireplace in the living room to floo back to his father's old cottage where he was staying.
