Northumberland And Pugwash's Friend Day
One day in the Great Big Harbour, Northumberland, the big submarine, woke up to start the new day. Normally, he would sleep all day as he does his regular night patrol. But last night, someone else has done his job and Northumberland had a good nights sleep for once in his life.
"That felt good," Northumberland said at once, "I really do need a good night's sleep once in a while." Northumberland turned on his engine and left his dock. He thought about what he is going to do that day. Normally, the big submarine would sleep during the day, but not today.
Soon, Pugwash met up with Northumberland. Pugwash is visiting the Great Big Harbour for a few days while Stewiacke is helping a lost fishing boat find its way. "Oh," Northumberland responded, "Good morning, Pugwash."
"Morning, Northumberland," Pugwash said, "Surprised to see you up at this time." "I know," said Northumberland, "Normally, I would sleep all day, but Nautilus had decided to do my job for me last night so that I could sleep all night for once in my life. Nice friend, he is."
"I can see that," Pugwash said. They both saw Nautilus sleeping at his dock. "I think it's his turn now," Northumberland whispered quietly. "I know," replied Pugwash, "So what's your plan for today?"
"Well," Northumberland replied, "I was thinking about going off and do whatever I want like saying 'hi' to my friends, who are up and working now." "All right!" said Pugwash, "I'll tag along with you!" "That's fine with me," said Northumberland, "Follow me!"
So Pugwash followed Northumberland out near the entrance. "All right," said Northumberland, "So what shall be in store for us today?" "Hey!" Pugwash called out, "My friend, Theodore!" "Yes," replied Northumberland, "I see him, and he is kind of busy at the moment." Northumberland is right.
At that time, Theodore and his friend, Hank are towing Clementine, a large container ship, out to sea. "Maybe later," thought Pugwash. "Come on," said Northumberland, "Let's see who else is available. Hmm. Perhaps Fundy is doing nothing right now other than saying something unusual."
"Fundy it is then," said Pugwash, "Let's go, Northumberland!" "Ok!" agreed Northumberland and so, the big black submarine followed the little submarine to where Fundy lives. "Why hello, you two," Fundy said with a smile on his voice. "Hi," chirped Pugwash.
"Surprise to see you up at this time, Northumberland," Fundy said. "I know," said Northumberland, "I actually got a full nights rest." "I see," said Fundy, "Well, I hope you two will have a fun day together." "Oh, we will," said Pugwash.
"Anyway," Fundy said, "You want to hear about the time that I caught a statue in my fishing net?" "Sure," answered Pugwash. "It was a nice quiet day," Fundy said, "I was out fishing near Cobequid Cove. My net was in the water, catching many fish as possible, but at one point, a foreign object ended up in the net."
"Foreign object?" repeated Pugwash. "It's something that doesn't belong there," Northumberland explained. "Oh," replied Pugwash, "I had no idea that they call them that. I remember seeing a statue underwater once in the Philippines."
"I thought they were terrible at handling shipping," Northumberland thought to himself, "Oh, never mind." "Anyway," Pugwash said, "Thanks for that story." "No problem," smiled Fundy, "Remember, if you run into a problem, look back." "Uh, all right," said Northumberland, "I wonder what he meant by that?" He just whispered it for himself, so nobody heard it.
Just as Pugwash and Northumberland left Fundy, Theodore and Hank had finished towing Clementine out of the harbour. "There you go, Clementine," smiled Hank. "Thanks," replied Clementine, "Glad that tugging went smooth. Otherwise my load of tomatoes would have been catching up!"
"Oh," replied Theodore, "All right then. Safe sailing." The two tugboats floated there as Clementine sailed off into the distance. "Hey, Theodore," Hank said, "What did you mean by causing a problem for her?" "Oh, never mind," Theodore said.
Around the time, Northumberland and Pugwash had decided to go their own ways. "We'll meet back in a few hours," Northumberland said. "Ok," Pugwash agreed, "See you then!" The two then split up to several friends. Soon afterwards, Pugwash ran into Millie, who was getting ready to go out fishing.
"Hello," smiled Millie. "Hi," Pugwash chirped, "How are you doing today?" "Oh, I'm doing fine now," Millie answered in a happy voice. "Ok," Pugwash said, "That's nice to hear from you." So Millie told Pugwash all about the things that she had done.
At the same time, Northumberland ran into Sigrid. "Oh, hey, Northumberland," Sigrid said, startled, "I didn't see you there." "Sorry," Northumberland said, "What are you doing right now?" "I was going to take a new winch out to Owan," Sigrid answered. "I see," Northumberland said, "Have I interrupted you?" "Nope," Sigrid answered, "Not at all." "Oh," Northumberland said.
While Northumberland was talking to Sigrid, at the same time, George and Foduck were both bringing in Catherine, a big container ship. She is loaded with big containers of heavy equipment.
However, George was really pushing himself over the edge. "George!" Foduck said urgently, "Don't rock her too hard!" "I know what I'm doing!" George retorted. "Yeah, right," muttered Foduck.
Some time later, Pugwash had met up with Emily who was using Bayswater barge to move a set of steel bars." Oh, hey, Pugwash," Emily said, noticing the little sub. "Hi," smiled Pugwash.
"I'm busy right now," Emily said, "But you're welcome to talk to me while Bayswater is doing the work." "Yeah, no kidding!" Bayswater said, "Heavy load!" "Oh," Pugwash said, "Yeah, I see." "Ok," Emily said, "Let me share you some of my stories." "Ok," Pugwash said."
At the same time, after George and Foduck docked Catherine, they both left to do another job. However, some of the cargo on Catherine's deck knocked one over and knocked some of the other cargo into the water. No one noticed this.
At the same time, Northumberland ran into Blankston, a small bell buoy who is anchored near some rocks. "Oh, hi," Northumerland said to the little buoy, "How are you doing?" "Uh," Blankston replied, "I'm staying in my spot, warning ships to stay away."
"Oh, right," Northumberland said. "I'm doing the same to you!" the bell buoy said to Northumberland. "I see," Northumberland said. "I need to do my job now!" Blankston said, "You need to leave now!" Northumberland backed away as a large freighter passed by.
Blankston dinged his bell to warn the ship away. "Uh, keep up the good work," Northumberland said, backing further away. Some time later, Northumberland decided to float back to the Big Harbour. "I wonder how Pugwash is doing?" Northumberland thought to himself, "I hope she's having a good time now."
Northumberland was about to turn back out of the harbour, but then, he noticed something in the water. "What the?" he said. Northumberland got a closer look. "Some cargo," Northumberland declared, "Oh no! I have to do something!"
This is the same cargo that had fallen off of Catherine earlier that day. "Uh oh," Northumberland thought, "They're starting to sink!" "What's going on, Northumberland?" Pugwash asked. "Some cargo has fallen off of a ship," Northumerland declared.
"We must get it out before it sinks!" "I have an idea," Pugwash called out. "What is it?" asked Northumberland. "Let's work together," Pugwash said, "We can catch the falling cargo with the giant net." "Good thinking, Pugwash," Northumberland said, "Let's try it!" "I'll get a net!" Pugwash said.
The two subs got an old net and just as the pile of cargo started to sink, the two subs caught them together. "We've got it!" Pugwash said. "Good thinking," Northumberland said. "I still remember Fundy's story," Pugwash said. Soon, the two subs had the cargo returned to deck.
By the end of the day, both Northumberland and Pugwash were floating together out near the entrance. "Northumberland," Pugwash said. "Yes, Pugwash?" Northumberland answered. "Thanks," Pugwash answered, "For today. It was a fun day."
"I know," Northumberland replied, felling better now. "Let's do something like that again someday," Pugwash said. "All right," Northumberland answered, "Let's hope." The two subs then prepared to go home.
But as they were about to go, Northumberland heard a dinging sound. "Blankston?" he said. "Northumberland, what?" Pugwash asked, following Northumberland to a set of rocks, the same one that he had been to earlier.
There was Blankston calling out to him. "Blankston?" Northumberland said, seeing the bell buoy. "Hey, Northumberland," Blankston said, "I wanted to say that I am sorry that I acted grouchy towards you today." "Oh, no problem," Northumberland replied.
"You are a great friend," Blankston said with a smile. "So are you," Northumberland agreed. "Me too," Pugwash agreed. "Right," Northumberland smiled.
