Vers wired up another phone to contact Yon-Rogg from outer space.
"Still can't get over how she's able to do that," Tony muttered.
She informed him of Lawson's species and death before asking for an explanation.
With the exception of Fury and Monica, everyone listened closely.
Thor was especially curious as to how Lawson was able to infiltrate Midgar without Heimdall noticing, and how long she had been there.
Yon-Rogg appeared somewhat uncomfortable with the question. He did tell Vers he recently discovered a mission report on Lawson from Earth, however, there was a limit on much he could share.
"More like you don't want to tell her," Monica bitterly muttered under her breath.
She had never met Yon-Rogg personally, but she knew enough about him.
Lawson was an undercover agent called Mar-Vell who was experimenting with technology that could have provided them the means to defeat the Skrulls.
"The Lightspeed technology?" Scott murmured confused. "How would that help?"
"If it does what it sounds like, then perhaps it would enable them to arrive at enemy sites without warning," T'Challa suggested. "Eliminate them quickly without giving them the chance to fight back."
That explanation was…unsettling. Not just because of the damage they could do, but because it could essentially be used on anybody, including them.
Suddenly, Thor was not so sure he liked the Kree possessing such technology, though the same could be said about the Skrulls.
Talos and the agents of SHIELD arrived in cars where Fury greeted them.
"Oh, boy," Wanda said softly.
"Prelude to chaos," Vision added.
Talos inquired about Vers, whom Fury replied was aiding the investigation. Talos ordered several men to remain while he went off to speak with Vers alone.
"That's not gonna end well," Sam stated. "If she's as suspicious of him as she was Fury, she'll start questioning him the same way."
"That's assuming he'd even let her," Natasha said. "Even with Keller's appearance, he probably still has some of his tools, like the one he used to subdue her the first time."
Fury could not remember Talos having anything like that. Then again, they had been too busy fighting for him to care.
As they entered the elevator, Talos congratulated "Nickolas" on his work, immediately arousing Fury's suspicion.
"I'm gonna take a wild guess and assume your boss knew your name preferences a long time before this," Peter drawled.
Fury snorted. "You assume right kid."
Back with Vers she asked Yon-Rogg if the report contained anything about her to which he denied.
"That can't be right," Wanda stated. "Vers is from Earth where she knew Lawson. There has to be something about her."
"Yeah, if she was with Lawson when she died, then how did Vers end up on Hala?" Steve questioned suspiciously.
"Maybe she was teleported or something?" Peter suggested earning him several looks. "What? I'm just saying. These days anything is possible, right?"
"Point taken," Steve acknowledged. "Thor, I know you've done something like that with the bifrost, but does technology like that exist?"
"It does, though not in the way you are thinking," Thor admitted. "The bifrost was constructed using the Tesseract which, as you know, can transport anyone anywhere. Teleportation technology does exist, and it would not surprise me if the Kree did have it, but nothing that would transport from Earth to Hala. The distance is just too far."
Vers revealed she'd discovered evidence of her being a citizen from Earth, much to Yon-Rogg's surprise. Vers then revealed that Mar-Vell was the one she saw when the SI spoke with her. She knew her, but only as Lawson.
"If the SI took on her form, shouldn't it know who Mar-Vell is?" Rhodey pointed out.
Everyone's eyes widened. They hadn't thought about that.
Yon-Rogg quickly became defensive and told Vers this sounded like a Skrull simulation. Vers frantically tried to deny it by stating she remembered the event, only for Yon-Rogg to cut her off.
"Okay, what the hell!" Scott exclaimed. "Can he not tell how distressed she is about this?"
"He might have his reasons," Clint offered while narrowing his eyes. "Still, that was way too quick for him to draw a conclusion like that."
Clint exchanged a glance with Natasha who had the same thought. Something was off.
He reminded her to know her enemy, even herself, and to not let her emotions cloud her judgement.
This time it had the effect on the whole audience. To them, Yon-Rogg was acting strange.
'Of course, you'd tell her to do that,' Fury inwardly scowled while glaring at Yon-Rogg. 'Don't want her to find out the truth or else you'll be done for. Oh, wait! You will be.'
'Oh, I cannot wait to see her find out just what you did,' Monica thought venomously. 'Let's see what happens when you deal with her unrestrained.'
Fury gave Talos the wrong floor for Vers while he went to the correct one under the guise they would prevent her from escaping. He said they would do things like they did in Havana, to which Talos agreed, indirectly revealing he was not Fury's boss.
"Getting your name wrong wasn't enough?" Steve asked.
"Skrulls can only sim recent memories," Fury reminded him. "My name was a hint, but I needed to be extra sure."
"You never can be too careful," Natasha supported.
Yon-Rogg ordered Vers to leave her beacon on so they could find her and revealed they were nearing the jump point soon. He promised that they would solve this together.
"After what we just saw, she'd be better off solving it without him," Sam prompted.
Although she had calmed down, Yon-Rogg's words had made her suspicious. Her memory may have been confused, but there was no way it was wrong.
"Seriously!" Monica exclaimed. "How stupid does he think she is?"
"Enough to believe everything he says apparently," Vision explained.
"To be fair, she has worked and trained alongside him for six years," T'Challa reminded them. "It wouldn't be unusual for her to trust him."
Talos entered the wrong room while Fury returned to records to warn Vers about the Skrulls. He was brought to a halt when Talos and several agents came marching in, forcing Fury to hide.
"You're screwed, aren't you!" Scott lamented.
"Not yet," Fury reassured.
Vers attempted to leave by stairs, just missing Coulson and Whitcher. Whitcher explained that Fury was working with Vers, much to Coulson's confusion since he called them in. Additionally, he was horrified when he learned their orders were to bring him in dead or alive.
"Dead or alive?!" Peter yelped horrified. "Isn't that a bit extreme?"
"Depends on who you're talking to," Natasha explained. "But you are right in this case. Killing him would be an option to take later if the threat he was posing was too great. The sensible course of action would be to capture him first and find out what he knows."
"An agent to the heart," Steve quipped.
Natasha smirked.
"Still," Peter said softly.
Having heard all this, a conflicted Vers turned back. She wasn't happy about him ratting her out, but she didn't want him dead either.
Monica smiled. Even brainwashed, her aunt was still the same person she'd always been. She'd never leave someone behind.
Fury was grateful as well. Carol could have left him to the Skrulls but chose to save him instead. That was enough to trust her.
"Hmm, not typical behaviour for a Kree soldier," Thor mused.
"What do you mean by that?" Sam asked.
"Well, normally when they are betrayed, they leave them to die or finish the job themselves provided the chance," the Asgardian deadpanned. "Going back to rescue them is not."
Fury stealthily avoided the agents by throwing an object, generating a loud noise and setting off several lights.
"Clever," Steve admitted.
"He's the spy for a reason," Tony pointed out.
Unfortunately, when he attempted to leave the same happened to him. He emerged from one aisle, only to be met with a gun to the head from Talos who politely asked if it was something he said.
"A couple of things you said actually," Fury corrected.
"He also technically just revealed his identity," Vision pointed out. "Was that intentional or did he assume that you knew his identity?"
"Honestly, I think he just didn't see any point in keeping the act," Fury admitted.
Not taking any chances, Fury attacked Talos and disarmed him while also landing in two good shots.
"Woah," Peter exclaimed. "You're good."
The other Avengers were impressed, though not surprised. Most of them had never seen Fury in action before.
Because the gun no longer worked, Fury threw it at him before unleashing several punches.
Fury's eyes narrowed. He never asked Talos how effective his strikes were, but he thought he must have at least felt them.
Thor's eyes also narrowed. He wasn't surprised Fury could fight, but he didn't believe he would win. He did not look down on Mortals, but he did know that physically, they were inferior to the likes of the Skrulls and Asgardians. There were many other alien species they would not last long against.
On the last punch, Talos caught his arm and (thanks to his enhanced strength) held it in place much to Fury's shock.
"Small remainder and spoiler," Fury warned. "Skrulls are stronger than humans. And this is the part where I get my ass handed to me."
"How badly?" Peter whispered concerned.
"Badly, but not too badly," Fury answered.
"That doesn't explain much," Tony deadpanned.
"Not badly enough that he can still move properly afterwards," Monica clarified earning a look from everyone (and a grateful one from Fury). "If you're wondering how I know, you'll soon see."
Talos then went on to overpower Fury with his own fighting skills. And thanks to his enhanced strength, they packed a lot more wallop. There fight came to an end when Talos threw Fury against the edges of shelves like some sort of ragdoll.
"Fuck!" Tony swore loudly.
"He beat you…like you were nothing," Steve said slowly.
"Was he even taking you seriously?" Clint asked. "Or was he just toying with you?"
They all had differing opinions about Fury but they all for fact that he wasn't weak. Far from it. Watching him get thrown around with little effort was a shock to all of them, Natasha included.
Monica felt conflicted about the scene. On one hand she knew they patched things, on the other hand, she did not like watching Fury get injured like that.
"Were you alright after that?" Peter asked sympathetically.
He had been hit by worse and survived, but it didn't make it any less painful.
"Couple of bruises and a mild concussion, but nothing too serious," Fury brushed off.
Goose growled. Talos or not, she did not like watching her owner get hurt.
While Fury in pain, Talos went on to explain that he didn't actually need the glasses but that they did complete the disguise with smug smile and voice.
"Clever," Vision admitted. "Necessary or not, it does make the illusion more convincing."
"The way he acts probably helps," Rhodey added.
Just as he was about to finish Fury off, Vers arrived and blasted Talos in the stomach.
Everyone exhaled in relief. That was perfect timing.
She then used her powers to create a hole in the roof and take them both through to escape. The arriving agents (and recovering Talos) could do nothing but stare at the burnt hole.
"Is that where you got the idea for the Mouse Hole device?" Steve asked recognising the similarities to the hole Maria created when she rescued them from Hydra.
"Actually, that was something developed by another agent," Fury admitted. "Agent Leopold Fitz I think his name was. I had nothing to do with it."
Clint and Natasha raised an eyebrow. They hadn't met him, but they knew of him.
Vers was furious at Fury (who hastily apologized) for calling them in.
"Oh, and he was supposed to trust you more than his boss?" Clint accused.
"Even if the Skrulls were an enemy planning an invasion, the Kree could have been doing the exact same," Natasha supported.
"I agree," Thor said. "Neither group can really be trusted."
As they made their way up the stairs they were intercepted by Coulson who held a gun to them.
Everyone tensed. Those that knew him hoped Coulson wouldn't do anything that could end badly for them, or him.
Vers readied her power, but an exchange between Fury and Coulson convinced him to lower his weapon and let them go. He even went as far as to cover for them by lying about their position.
Everyone exhaled in relief.
"He always was a good agent," Steve commented.
"One of the best," Tony agreed.
"Pity he could never get his cards signed by you Steve," Natasha said.
"I would have if he asked," Steve admitted softly.
"Wait, seriously!" Scott yelped. "Was it a complete set?"
"Vintage," Steve clarified. "Nat said he was very proud of them."
There was an awkward, sad silence between the people who knew Coulson. This did not go unnoticed.
"What?" Monica hesitated, likely knowing the answer. "Where is he now?"
"Dead." Thor declared bluntly. "My brother killed him."
There was a shocked silence that followed. Those that hadn't known Coulson knew exactly who Thor was referring to. And taking into account when he was on Earth, they knew it was before the Incident.
"I'm so sorry," Monica apologised.
"As are we," Vision added.
Everyone began to offer small apologies for their loss.
Fury remained silent. He should have told them about Phil, but ultimately kept quiet about it. If he told them, it would lead to a very long and complicated explanation, followed by a reception of angry protests, which he didn't want to get into. There was also the methods he'd used to revive Coulson which some might (justifiably) say were unethical or inhumane. Others would say they were downright crazy and stupid. Given the previous results, he couldn't help but agree. Using Kree blood wasn't a good idea, and thanks to the base's destruction, no longer possible. Though perhaps it was for the best.
"Sounds he was one heck of a guy," Scott offered.
"The Son of Coul was," Thor agreed. "One of the greatest and most noble of souls."
"On that, we can all agree," Tony murmured.
Arriving at the hangar, they barricaded the door.
"That won't hold them for long," T'Challa cautioned.
"It held them for long enough," Fury countered.
Vers held her hand out expectantly for the pager as she deemed Fury untrustworthy with it. Fury reluctantly complied.
"Okay, seriously," Clint complained. "She's expecting way too much since they just met."
"Even I'm not that arrogant," Tony scowled.
"I understand if she's angry with him, but you had no way of knowing they were Skrulls," Sam added. "It's not his fault."
Fury groaned. "Oh, for the love of; would you all give it a rest?!" Everyone turned to face him. "Look, I can get why it might look that way for some of you but…try and see things from her perspective. I did my job like I was supposed to, as I would expect any of you to. And like you said, I had no way of Keller was Talos. However, from her point of view, I brought the enemy who'd been hunting her up until that point right to her location. And her being in the middle of an identity crisis and having trust issues with her co-workers didn't help matters either. It wasn't so much arrogance, more of her being cautious." He took a brief second to catch his breath. "Tell me, what would you have done in her shoes?"
No one answered. They could see his reasoning, even if they didn't fully agree with it.
"Besides, what's done is done. I've moved on from it, and so has she," Fury finished.
As Talos and the agents broke through, Fury and Vers boarded a nearby quadjet.
"Um, do either of you know how to fly that?" Rhodey asked nervously.
"You'll see," Fury informed softly.
Fury asked if she knew how to fly it, only for Vers to say they'll see. An anxious Fury told her the answer to that question was either yes or no. After successfully kickstarting the jet, Vers smirked in triumph and said yes.
"Her memories from her subconscious must be doing this," Sam mused.
"Starting it up is one thing," Rhodey pointed out. "Let's see is she can fly it."
As they took off, Talos and the agents opened fire, but Vers flew straight past them and outside. Escaping once more to Fury's delight and Talos' frustration.
"Well, I'll be damned," Rhodey applauded. "That girl can fly."
"At least they got away," Wanda sighed. "If only for a little while."
As the quadjet ascended, Fury and Vers could hear a sound in the back. Turning around, they saw it was Goose being pushed back against the cargo.
The present Goose hissed. She had not liked being held back like that at all. It was quite uncomfortable.
Vers steadied the jet allowing Goose to crawl up to them. Fury complimented Goose on what a good cat she was while the said cat got comfortable at the front. Vers looked on amused.
"Ugh, I wish record this," Tony snickered. "I still can't get over how you are with cats."
"Same here," Steve agreed. "It's like you turn into a completely different person."
Fury huffed. He didn't see any point in indulging them.
Peter couldn't see what the problem was. He liked cats and behaved the exact same way around them. Veteran spy or not, the man was still human with regular likes and interests.
Deciding to get serious, Vers showed Fury the picture of her as a pilot and informed him of the circumstances of her arrival on Hala, all of which was six years ago.
"Back then, I'm guessing you didn't see that one coming," Monica suggested.
"I didn't see a lot of things coming," Fury admitted. "However, I will admit that one shocked me."
Fury realized Vers believed she was the pilot who went missing with Lawson. Vers told him that she was going to see the one person who might have answers: Maria Rambeau.
Monica held her breath. This would be the moment where she and her mom would finally reunite with her aunt, and not in a very happy way. But even that was just a prelude to the hell that was to come.
"At last," T'Challa exclaimed. "Someone who can give us some answers. Though maybe not all of them."
"That's right. Maria might know something, but that doesn't mean she'll know everything," Wanda piped up.
"At the very least, she can provide some insight into Vers' past," Thor revealed. "It's quite clear that Vers, if that is her name, is human. And this woman, Maria Rambeau, did know her to extent. So, she will at least be able to answer questions about her life on Earth."
"The Kree are still a problem, not just the Skrulls," Natasha reminded them. "I don't know about the rest of you, but I haven't trusted them from the start, especially not Yon-Rogg. The way he's acted, especially when Earth and Lawson were brought up. He's hiding something."
"You think he was involved in the accident?" Steve asked, though not quizzically.
"I think it's a possibility," Natasha replied.
Unbeknownst to her, they'd all started to consider it. There had been way too many coincidences for them not question it.
Vers asked for directions to Louisiana to which Fury gave. Vers asked about Coulson. Fury smiled and said he was the new guy and that he probably didn't hate him, though Vers asked him to give it some time first.
Clint snorted. "He never hated you."
"He had moments," Fury corrected with a grin.
Fury explained that Coulson probably guessed something was wrong, so going with his gut, decided to disobey orders and help them. For an agent like him that was a very hard thing to do, but it made him and many others human.
"And that's the important part," Sam agreed.
"Though it can also have negative consequences," Rhodey pointed out.
"And good ones," Sam countered.
Vers admitted to being punished for that, a lot. Fury could actually see that happening, causing her to laugh. Fury assumed that going back to save the guy who ratted her out wasn't typical Kree procedure. Vers said she wouldn't tell his boss if he didn't tell hers, this time both of them laughing.
The exchange of banter between them caused everyone to start laughing.
While they had teased him about it, everyone who knew Fury liked seeing this side of him. There was definitely more to him than the paranoid master spy they knew him as. This version was friendlier and had a sense of humour. It was nice.
'Definitely not typical Kree procedure,' Thor supported. 'But I guess she's not Kree.'
'Amnesia and all, she's the same person she was before she became Captain Marvel,' Monica smiled warmly.
On the Kree ship, Yon-Rogg was contacted by Ronan the Accuser.
"Ronan the Accuser," Thor whispered with a tinge of horror dripping at the end.
"You know him Point Break?" Tony asked concerned by his friend's tone.
"Only by reputation," Thor admitted as a bit of sweat cam on. "He's the leader of the Accusers, and by far the most dangerous."
Ronan stated they had done their job perfectly, however, the bigger mission was a failure because of Yon-Rogg's team. Yon-Rogg defended himself by explaining what really happened and why it did, causing Ronan to request their location, promising to extinguish the Skrulls threat.
Thor went pale. If the Accusers came to Earth, they would do more than just get rid of the Skrulls threat. However, one thing was off. If the Accusers had come, why had Heimdall not alerted his father about what was happening? Regardless of his opinion of mortals, Odin would never have tolerated the Krees actions and forced them to step down.
Yon-Rogg was against it because of what it involved and promised that they would handle it.
"Bomb everything out of the galaxy?" Scott yelled. "They can't just do that. What about everyone else living on Earth who's not a Skrull."
"They can and they will," Thor stated. "The Kree don't care about mortal lives or anyone else's for that matter. If it means wiping out their enemy, they'll do it gladly."
That caused everyone to freeze. Tony was especially wary because how dangerous the Kree's technology was. There was no telling how much damage they could do.
Ronan declared that any number of Skrulls were a threat to the entire Kree and demanded their location.
"That is far too extreme," Peter breathed. "I doubt everyone of them is bad. What he's talking about is genocide."
Thor's eyes widened. He hadn't thought of it like that before. He didn't have much love for the Skrulls himself but he didn't want them extinct.
Steve glared at Ronan. He was beginning to remind him of Schmidt and Pierce with the amount of death they were willing to cause to achieve their goals.
Korath almost spilled, but Yon-Rogg intervened and said they were missing.
The tension eased but didn't disappear.
Fury never thought he'd be grateful to Yon-Rogg, but this was an exception, even if it wouldn't last. Thor and Monica were of a similar opinion.
Yon-Rogg promised to find them. Ronan ordered him to follow up on that, or the Accusers would find them.
"I really hope they don't," Peter murmured.
Yon-Rogg have Korath a chastising look and told him to maintain the course for Earth.
"Well, I think it's safe to say this is getting out of hand," Tony said.
"No kidding," Clint said tiredly. "Fury if the Kree came here, why isn't it on file?"
"This was a separate incident altogether," he admitted. "I managed to keep as little information about this getting out as much as possible, even about her. Not even Pierce knew that much about it. He was only concerned about the location of the Tesseract, though that shouldn't surprise anyone."
"I think Clint is more concerned about the collateral damage," Wanda said.
"Don't worry, they didn't get far enough to cause any," Fury growled.
Thor was somewhat relieved to hear that. Still, it didn't explain why Heimdall hadn't alerted them.
"We may as well just continue watching," Sam suggested. "Maria Rambeau is next. At least we'll get some answers."
Monica eyed Fury who returned. The moment for their reunion was approaching. How would they react to that? Most of all, how would they react to her?
Hi there! Well, what did you think of that?
Sorry I took this long to update. I recently got into the game Last of Us, and then the series, and I can't seem to stay away from it.
I feel like I'm making Thor come across as a bit of a scientist in this one. Considering how old he is, not to mention the amount of experience he has with space, him knowing a lot about other civilizations made sense.
Next chapter will see Carols reunion with Maria and Monica!
Hope you enjoyed reading!
