A.N. Thank you all for your patience in waiting for this chapter. I'm sorry for the wait. Please know that I do write every single day between chapters, and I don't ever publish until I'm 100% satisfied with what I've written. Honestly, this was a very painful chapter to write. And after the cliffhanger last chapter I'm sure you'll all be very anxious to know what's going on, so let's get started!

Starrat/Wolfs child: :D

Ghost of Magic: He's definitely not happy, to put it mildly. He's not going to pull any punches this time. The Sinning Tree is definitely too quick for Haruki now.

Hina714: Yeah, my heart was pounding while writing that chapter. I've had that image in my head of Kurama running up the stairs to only find Sakura's necklace and a taunting note for ages. And yes, everyone wants Haruki launched directly into the sun now that he has Sakura. Happy birthday. Hope this is a decent gift.

ukitakeitalialover041757: Yes. Yes he will. Read on to see what Sakura will do.

hw0134160: Sorry, it had to happen. I didn't enjoy writing it, but it's the only way. Rest assured, I'm not looking forward to what he's going to do to her either. I didn't lose sleep over this chapter, but the downside is you all had to wait and I feel truly awful about that. I don't think the next chapter will be as long to come out.

kaigirl16: Very true. Things have gone from bad to worse.

Deadly Writer: I'm curious as to what you'll think of Sakura's actions in this chapter. She's going through a lot, but she's not one to give up easily. I feel the same way about Haruki, and soon you'll all know exactly what happened to him from childhood.

I took your words to heart and didn't overexert myself for this chapter. I'm just sorry it was delayed. Hopefully it was worth the wait?

I don't own YYH, just my OC's.

Chapter 20

Keiko clutched the broken pendant to her chest. "This can't be real," she sobbed. "Oh God, why? Why Kura?"

This was a nightmare. It had to be. How could things have taken such a horrific turn in the span of sixty seconds?

"Shh, it's ok. It'll be alright," Botan was tearful, but she knelt beside Keiko and hugged her. A blanket of despair smothered the apartment as they began to take in the awful truth.

Haruki was alive. And not only was he working with Sensui, but he'd just succeeded in abducting Sakura.

"Master Genkai, please tell me what's going on," Mitari asked in confusion. "Do you know Mr Haruki?"

The atmosphere in the room tensed even further. "In short, yes," Genkai said briefly. "We have history with him,"

Mitari's jaw dropped. "What? Then that must mean…no, Mr Sensui never mentioned anything about wanting her!"

"Sensui ordered this, no question," Koenma muttered. "He must've been planning it from the start,"

"But why?" Mitari was bewildered. "Why would Mr Sensui want to kidnap Miss Kura? Kuwabara has the power he needs!"

Genkai shook her head. "For now, we can only guess. But I guarantee it's nothing good,"

Nobody felt brave enough to speak after that statement. They simply looked towards Kurama.

The note was still crushed in his trembling hand. He hadn't made a sound or moved an inch since reading it. None of them knew what it said, but the rage emanating from the fox demon told them plenty.

Kurama turned away from their collective gaze. They were all waiting to see what he would do. What he would say.

He had no words for what he was feeling right now.

Focus. What happened here?

Kurama forced himself to examine the devastation that had been wrought on Sakura's room. Even allowing for Sensui's attack on the apartment, it was clear that some kind of struggle had occurred. The smashed mirror, an empty smoke grenade below it, her prized necklace ripped from her throat…

Wait.

Now that he'd gotten a good look at the scene, Kurama noticed something. Specifically, the drops of blood on the floor.

That's not just her blood. It's his as well.

Sakura had tried to fight back, but it clearly hadn't lasted long. Haruki must have overpowered her somehow.

The thought was absolutely nauseating.

Kurama crossed the room again and stared out the broken window where the car had vanished. The street below was filled with smoke and the scent of burning rubber. Sakura's desperate scream for help was still ringing in his ears. If he'd just realised the truth a few seconds earlier, then maybe…

"We can't wait any longer," Genkai said sharply. "We have to move now,"

"Right," Koenma swallowed. He'd never looked so worried and ashamed before. This was partly his fault, and he knew it. "Kurama, I…"

Kurama remained silent and motionless. He couldn't bring himself to look at the prince.

"Too slow, Spirit Fox,"

Kurama could feel Haruki's smile of triumph, and Sensui's. He could hear the monster laughing at him. Laughing at the fact that he'd stolen the most precious thing on earth. How dare they lay a finger on his flower. How dare they snatch her away from him.

Mine.

Kurama hissed. He heard everyone behind him flinch at the sound, but he didn't care. Yoko was roaring inside him. If Haruki or Sensui did anything to harm Sakura…if they hurt her in any way…

"Kurama!" Genkai called. "Let's move!"

No response. The tips of his hair were starting to glow silver. Genkai knew what was happening. Any moment now, his control would relinquish, and none of them would be able to bring him back.

She immediately reached out and gripped Kurama's shoulder. He still didn't turn around.

"Kurama, I know what you're thinking, but you can't catch up to him now,"

The fox demon noticed the slight tremor in her voice, and it made him pause. He finally allowed himself to face her.

"Sensui is probably counting on you going after Haruki alone," she said firmly. "The best chance to get her back is to storm the cave as a group,"

Genkai's old eyes were full of pain and shock behind the gruff exterior. She was obviously making an effort to compose herself without the others noticing.

Even Genkai didn't see this coming.

Kurama nodded slowly. Genkai was right. Cold logic was the only way forward. They needed to find Yusuke. They needed to rally Kaito and Yana. And then…they'd go to the cave.

"Let's go," Kurama growled.

Keiko looked up from the ground as they all began to exit. "Kurama," her voice cracked. "Please, you have to save her,"

Kurama glanced back at her. "I will,"

For just a moment, Keiko saw a hint of gold in his eyes. But before she could look closer, Kurama had already left with the others hurrying along in his wake.

I'm coming for you, Kura. Just hold on.

Haruki's knuckles glowed white on the steering wheel. His eyes darted around from the rear view and side view mirrors. Nobody seemed to be coming after him, but all the same he kept driving as fast as he could.

I did it. I actually did it!

He was almost dizzy with joy. He couldn't believe that it had been so simple…

The Spirit Fox was already outside with Koenma and Genkai. Perfect. Sakura was all alone in her bedroom. Kurama wouldn't be able to get to her in time.

Haruki watched Sakura take the pills from her nightstand. His heart was pounding. Months of preparation and weeks of planning had all led up to this very moment.

The sight of her was utterly glorious.

The minute her back was turned, Haruki slipped through the broken window without a sound. Sakura was reaching into the closet.

He tiptoed to the door, but she'd heard him while pulling a sweater out and putting it on.

"Yeah I know, Keiko. I'm coming," Sakura mumbled without looking.

Sakura's melodic voice was enough to make Haruki shiver in delight. Just a few more seconds, and she'd know it wasn't Keiko. The most crucial item was already in his hand, but first, he needed to take one more precaution.

Haruki reached out and locked the door. Should anyone try to intervene, that would certainly slow them down. His car was waiting, hidden from view in a small alleyway just beside the apartment block, and positioned for a rapid getaway.

Like Sensui said, he just needed to move quickly.

With the hoodie on, Sakura tugged the end of her ponytail and sighed. Haruki stepped forward. He knew this was it.

"It's been a long time, Sakura," he whispered.

He hadn't planned on saying anything to her before striking, but how could he resist when she was standing there? He hadn't been so close to her in his physical body for months.

Sakura paused momentarily before slowly turning around. Finally, their eyes met.

For a split second, she stared at him before her pretty mouth fell open in a look of shocked horror. Haruki smiled at her.

Sakura took a step back, and her head jerked towards the locked door as if she were deciding whether to run or scream.

Haruki didn't give her the chance to do either. Not with Technique Zero.

He reached out his hand. "Hitei suru!"

Haruki leaned forward over the steering wheel and told himself to stop reminiscing. He needed to focus. There would be time to savour the operation once he got her back to the cave.

Another scan of the rearview mirrors told Haruki that it was at last safe to make the phone call. Without looking away from the road, he picked up the phone and dialled.

Gourmet leaned out the truck window. "Hey boss, what's taking Ghost? I thought he would've caught up to us by now,"

"He'll be along shortly," Sensui said calmly. "He's transporting delicate cargo, after all,"

Just then, Gourmet realised that their phone was ringing. His eyes widened when he saw the number on the screen.

"Speak of the devil. He's calling. You want me to take it?"

Sensui shook his head slyly. "No, let me. Something tells me he has good news,"

He took the device and put it to his ear. "Ghost. I didn't expect to hear from you so quickly. Have you carried out your mission?"

"Yes, Mr Sensui," Haruki breathed. "It's done. I've got her,"

"Very impressive, my boy," Sensui smiled. "Where are you now?"

Kuwabara stopped trying to free himself and looked over at Sensui, who was barely concealing his elation. That didn't bode well.

"I'm almost out of the city," Haruki could hardly talk through his excitement. "It shouldn't take me long to catch up to you,"

"And the Spirit Fox?"

"No sign of a pursuit yet, but they're all bound to come after us once they regroup,"

Sensui laughed softly. "Excellent. We have everything we need now. We'll meet you at the rendezvous point within thirty minutes,"

"I'll get her there as quickly as possible, Mr Sensui," Haruki giggled. "I just need to make a quick stop once I'm out of range. Precautions, you know? In case she wakes up,"

"Of course, but be gentle with your guest," Sensui smirked. "And make it fast. Sniper is keeping Yusuke busy, but it would be best not to delay,"

"Understood, Mr Sensui. I'll be there,"

Sensui hung up and noticed Kuwabara glaring daggers at him. The boy might have only heard half the conversation, but every word had sent chills down his spine.

"Just what the hell was that all about, Sensui?" Kuwabara demanded. "What did you do?!"

Instead of replying, Sensui directed a knowing look at Gourmet, who laughed and tightened his tendrils once more.

"You'll see, Kuwabara," Sensui chuckled over Kuwabara's yells of agony.

Haruki hung up the phone and dropped it on the passenger seat. His eyes went back to the rear view mirror, which had been carefully positioned so he could not only keep an eye out for anyone following him, but observe the back at the same time.

Haruki smiled at the sight. Anyone who looked through the window would see nothing more than a nondescript blanket thrown over the backseat, but Haruki knew better. Underneath that blanket lay the answer to everything.

Haruki didn't think he could wait any longer. He had to gaze at her again. He had to allow himself the pleasure of knowing she was really here with him after all this time. That he finally owned Sakura Urameshi, as Sensui had promised him.

The exit to the mountain road loomed ahead. Nobody else seemed to be around, so now was the perfect time to pull over.

He edged off the road and down a small dirt trail for better concealment. Once out of sight, Haruki switched off the ignition and leaned into the back.

He lifted the blanket slightly to see his prize: an unconscious Sakura, lying motionless on the backseat.

So beautiful.

Sensui was right. His plan had worked perfectly, although part of Haruki wished he could've seen Kurama's reaction to the note he'd left behind.

A small price to pay, for what I have now.

Haruki reached out a hand to brush Sakura's face. The moment he made contact, his whole body seemed to tingle.

He gasped at how soft she felt under his touch. The sensation had been ecstasy itself in his shadow form, but touching Sakura in his physical body? It was beyond words.

"Are you awake yet, Sakura?" he murmured while caressing her lustrous hair. "I hope not. At least until we get back to the cave,"

She didn't move.

Haruki paused. The drugs left by Kamiya were still working, but for how long? He still had a decent drive ahead before arriving at Demon's Door Cave. If she woke up before he could get her there, it would certainly complicate the situation.

There was only one option. It wasn't one he liked, but it had to happen.

"Sorry about this, honey," Haruki whispered. "Can't risk it,"

He popped the trunk and opened the glove compartment to retrieve the ropes.

Yusuke turned quickly, only to see nothing. "Just the wind again… " he muttered.

He'd made it into an open area of the woods, but a whistling behind him caught his attention. Five razor-sharp leaves soared past him, made a one-eighty degree turn and sailed at the targets on his body. Yusuke quickly batted them all away but not before one sliced his bare arm.

Only one left. He seized it and looked at the blood seeping from the cut on his shoulder when he spotted the motorcycle parked nearby.

Sniper's ride!

Yusuke went on high alert and looked in all directions.

Then he really is nearby…but where? And when?

Right on cue, the next lot of projectiles appeared. A horde of various-sized rocks. Yusuke took one look and started running. He needed to put some space between them before attacking.

"Well, don't I feel special?" Yusuke snarled as he ran. "My own private localised personal meteor shower!"

His chance had come. Yusuke whirled around and started punching them all to dust.

"Keep 'em coming!" He called as the last one crumbled. "I'm just starting to get a good workout!"

Almost immediately, Yusuke saw the glint of Sniper's next wave.

"More rocks?" he groaned. "Come on, this guy really needs a creativity consultant!"

They were getting closer, and moving faster. Yusuke realised the awful truth. Those weren't rocks. A huge swarm of sharp knives infused with Sniper's ki was about to skewer him.

"Here's some real ammo! SHOTGUN!"

A spray of spirit gun bullets destroyed all but two of the knives. Yusuke leapt out of the way as the remaining blades circled back around for another go.

The dreaded seven-ten split!

He jumped back just in time to catch the knives in between his fingers before throwing them aside in disgust. All these weapons, but Sniper himself hadn't appeared.

Is he afraid of me, or is he just keeping his distance just to drag this out? Sensui must be long gone by now thanks to this trigger-happy loser. Damn it…where's Kura when you need her?

Her Reflection Shield might have given him the edge he needed, but at least this way she was safe with the others. Kurama would look after her.

Yusuke looked around again. "If he'd just show his pretty-boy face I'd bash it in for him!"

Sniper smiled down from his perch on the nearby cliff face.

You'll never get close enough to try.

"Shuichi, what are you saying? What do you mean?"

Kazuya appeared in the doorway. Shiori was on the phone, looking horrified.

She paused while her son responded. "Oh my goodness…" she gasped. "What about Yusuke, is he alright?"

Another pause.

"But why? Do they have any idea?"

Kazuya watched as Shiori pressed a hand over her mouth in an attempt to stem the flood of emotion.

"Oh, Shuichi. I'm so sorry. If there's anything I can do… alright, I understand. Let me know as soon as you hear anything. I love you,"

Shiori hung up and buried her head in her hands. Kazuya immediately moved towards his fiancée.

"What's wrong, dear? Was that Shuichi? I thought he'd gone on a date with Sakura?"

Shiori looked up at him. Her face had gone white as chalk. "Yes, but it's just awful… Sakura is missing,"

"Missing? What do you mean?"

Shiori took a moment before answering. It was just too horrible to contemplate. "Shuichi said she was snatched off the street about an hour ago,"

"What?" Kazuya was stunned. He hadn't met Sakura as yet, but from the way Shiori gushed about the girl, he had surmised that she wasn't the type of teenager to get in such danger. Something was terribly wrong.

"Shuichi is at the hospital with Yusuke," Shiori explained in a trembling voice. "Apparently the twins were walking home from school when they were attacked by a gang. Yusuke was assaulted and they dragged Sakura into a car,"

Kazuya visibly reeled. "But why on earth would anyone do such a thing?"

"Shuichi said nobody is quite sure yet. There hasn't been any contact from the perpetrators since. No witnesses, either,"

"What about Yusuke? How is he?"

"He has some significant injuries. Shuichi said he's still undergoing tests, but he seems to be stable. Hopefully he'll be able to tell the police more soon,"

Shiori took a deep breath. "But Sakura…that poor girl, she's just a child…!" Her eyes filled with tears.

Kazuya pulled her into his arms. "Come here, Shiori," he said gently. "It'll be alright,"

"And Shuichi…" Shiori whispered. "He's trying to hold himself together, but he's worried sick. I could tell on the phone. What will happen if…if Sakura…?"

She couldn't bring herself to say it.

Kazuya shook his head firmly. "Try to have faith, Shiori. The authorities are best equipped to handle such situations. There's every chance she'll be found soon,"

Shiori leaned into Kazuya's chest and wiped at her eyes before starting to silently pray. For Sakura, and for her beloved son.

Kurama somehow managed to keep his voice steady. "Very well. We'll see you there as soon as possible,"

Having finished both calls, Kurama placed the phone down and exited the phone booth. Everyone else waited anxiously nearby.

He hadn't intended to call home before contacting Kaito and Yana, but his fingers had dialled without him even making a conscious choice. Even in the haze of anxiety over what had happened to his flower, and what they were about to do, Kurama knew that this incident would have far reaching consequences.

He needed to spin a plausible cover story that would explain whatever happened next. Something that would account for his inevitable absence, and the condition Sakura might be in when this was over…

His heart clenched. Be strong, my love. I'm coming for you.

Of course, there was no reply. Kurama knew that before even trying.

The others were looking at him, waiting for him to speak. Kurama slipped his hands in his pockets for security.

"Kaito and Yana will be waiting for us at the Mushiyori Station," he said quietly.

"And where do we go from there?" Botan wondered out loud. "We still have no clue which way Yusuke was heading, and without Kura…"

Botan trailed off with a gulp. Her eyes were still red and puffy.

"Demon's Door Cave," Mitari said quickly. "I'm sure that's where Mr Sensui will be taking Kuwabara. Mr Itsuki is waiting there for him to bring the psychic who can break the Kekkai barrier," he turned to Kurama. "And Mr Haruki should be there too,"

Genkai gave him a quick look of approval. "See, you're already more useful than roadkill,"

Kurama closed his eyes. He didn't even want to imagine how frightened Sakura must be right now. Or what Haruki might be doing to her. The thought turned his stomach, and he suppressed a growl.

Focus. You have to take this one step at a time. Rescuing Kura is the top priority. Once she's safe, you can deal with that degenerate.

Nobody seemed to have noticed his reaction. They were too busy discussing how to find Yusuke without Sakura's help.

"I wish Yusuke had his communication mirror," Botan sighed in frustration. "He says it looks like a compact, and fate forbid he ever be seen with makeup!"

"Don't worry," Genkai was unconcerned. "If he's half the bad boy he thinks he is - which isn't totally unthinkable - he should manage to tough it out and stay on their trail. In which case, we should cross paths eventually, so let's move!"

Botan went to follow them, but Koenma called her back. "Botan, I need you to do something for me,"

"What?"

Koenma looked exceptionally grave. With Kuwabara and now Sakura in Sensui's clutches, he had to just come out and say it.

"This is by far the most serious danger I've faced since I started overseeing the detectives," he said. "I'm going to Spirit World. Now that Sensui has the power to cut the Kekkai barrier, we must face the grim possibility… that we may not succeed. The world could be very different soon,"

Koenma closed his eyes. "In case we fail, I have to make preparations back home. While I'm gone, you will be in charge,"

Botan only looked stunned for a moment before quickly composing herself. "Yes sir!"

Kurama kept his head down as they headed into the train station. His face and demeanour was icy calm, but inside, his mind was racing.

What do they plan to do with her? What use would her powers be to the tunnel?

They passed the gate and got on the next train to Mushiyori.

Unless that's what Sensui wants us to think. There might be something else going on. Haruki could be looking for revenge… but Kura told us to spare him… why would he want revenge on her, especially when Yusuke was the one who defeated Toguro and caused Sakyo to destroy the stadium? Perhaps this is a way of destabilising our team. Using her as a tool to throw us off guard.

Kurama took a seat and stared out the window.

But they already had Kuwabara for that… is it because there are obstacles waiting for us in the cave, ones where Kura's abilities would be useful?

There was no clear answer. Either way, Kurama was already considering what must now be done. Once he got his hands on Haruki, there would be no hesitation this time. No more chances. He didn't care what it would take. He'd demolish the entire cave to find his flower, and punish those responsible for her suffering. Whatever damage they inflicted on her, he'd repay it tenfold…

"Mr Kurama?" Mitari asked hesitantly. "I'm sorry. If I'd had any idea that they were after Miss Kura, I would've-"

Genkai held up a hand. "None of us suspected this. But we can't worry about that now. We need to stay focused,"

Mitari nodded. "Yes, Master Genkai. But how do you know Mr Haruki?"

"We encountered him at the Dark Tournament several months ago," Kurama said briefly. "He was the bodyguard to Sakyo, who initially planned on opening a tunnel between worlds,"

"Hold up, Fox Boy. We can get to the full story in a moment," Genkai turned to Mitari. "First, what can you tell us about Haruki?"

"Like I said, he was quiet. Kept to himself a lot," Mitari said slowly. "He usually just stayed in his den. I'm not sure why,"

Kurama eyed the young boy. "And his power? Do you know anything about his abilities?"

"I only saw him practicing his moves once, when he fought Miss Kura in the hospital," Mitari shook his head. "Mr Sensui called it Technique Binary. He can duplicate himself and his consciousness. Mr Sensui said that he was able to merge his projection into the shadows. Something about childhood training…"

"Soul Projection," Genkai muttered. "Of course!"

Kurama shut his eyes. "I'm assuming that's a technique of Master Shin?"

Genkai nodded. "One of his favourite tactics back in our heyday. Sending his consciousness out, gathering information, reconnaissance. It's more useful than many would believe,"

"Master Shin?" Mitari looked lost.

Kurama sighed deeply. "As a child, Haruki was taught by the same telepathy psychic who trained Kura,"

Mitari's jaw dropped. "What?!"

"That's right," Genkai growled. "I'm only going to explain this once, so listen carefully,"

They had a decent train ride ahead of them, and Mitari needed to be filled in.

Oh God…my head…

The world was spinning. Sakura's eyes slowly cracked open to find nothing but darkness, and a dreadful sense of confinement. Her cheek rested on a scratchy surface.

Where am I? Why is the ground moving?

Sakura attempted to sit up, but her body felt like it was weighed down.

I can't move? Oh no… no!

Her mouth was taped shut. Her wrists and ankles were bound tightly with what felt like rope.

No! What is this?! What's going on?!

The sensation of moving, the dark and cramped space… of course!

The horrifying truth slammed into Sakura. She was tied up in the trunk of a car. One that was being driven by someone she had believed to be long dead.

This can't be real! How did I get here…?

Fragmented memories began flashing through Sakura's throbbing head. Of being in her room, pulling the sweater over her head. Hearing that voice behind her. Turning around to see a smiling intruder, and the unspeakable fear upon realising that she knew him…

He raised his hand. "Hitei suru!"

Those two words were followed by a deathly cold chill in her veins, and his strong forearm pinning her up against the wall.

Through her terror, Sakura managed to free her left arm and went to fire a spirit blast, but nothing happened. She couldn't even feel her spirit energy being summoned.

What did he do? Why can't I use my energy?!

His hand went over her mouth, and Sakura saw the needle he was holding.

"Just relax, honey," he whispered in her ear. "You won't feel a thing,"

Those words were more terrifying than any substance he was about to inject.

No!

In utter desperation, Sakura slashed her nails down his face. His grip slackened for just a moment and she managed to turn her head towards the door.

He was already clawing at her again. In the struggle, he left deep scratches down her neck. She felt her beloved pendant snapping and falling with a clatter on the floorboards.

"Kurama! Help!" she shrieked at the same time there was a sharp sting in her arm. Almost immediately, Sakura's vision blurred.

"Kura!" Kurama's voice sounded faint, distant. "I'm coming!"

He wasn't going to make it. Sakura felt the numbness spread throughout her body in a matter of microseconds. Her legs wouldn't hold her up anymore.

No…no, please…stay awake…

"Sweet dreams, honey," Haruki smirked as the darkness swallowed her up. "Sensui is waiting for you!"

Sakura felt tears pooling in her eyes.

Please, let this be a nightmare. It can't be true, there's just no way!

Even in the haze of drugs and panic, she already knew the answer. This was real. Haruki was still alive. He was working with Sensui. And he'd just kidnapped her.

If it weren't for the tape over her mouth, she would've been sick.

How? How is he alive? Why did he do this to me?

Sakura wanted to scream, but it was impossible. Everything made sense now. He'd been the one who attacked her at the hospital. He was probably the one who told Sensui about them all in the first place.

Now what?

Where was he taking her? How long til they got there? And what would happen to her once the trunk was opened? Would they kill her? Assault her? Use her to harm people?

In a panic, Sakura started pulling at her restraints to no avail. It was so dark, and the effort to free herself was just making the dizziness worse. Her tears spilled over.

What does Sensui want from me?! Mitari said it was Kuwabara!

The car hit a bump in the road. Sakura was jostled, rolling onto her back. The motion made her head throb. She was so dizzy, so weak. Whatever he'd injected her with, it was strong.

Stop. You have to calm down. Breathe. You can't afford to panic!

The car made a hairpin turn. It was going downhill. Sakura slowed her breathing down as best she could.

Think, Sakura. You don't have long. You have to do something!

Ironically, that earlier jolt seemed to have given her a little clarity. The questions of how and why couldn't be answered now. She had to do whatever she could to try and escape, or at least fight back.

If you're in the trunk, he won't know you're awake. Can you get yourself free?

Sakura brought her tied hands closer to her face and started slowly pulling the tape from her mouth. Haruki had wrapped it around the back of her neck several times, but losing a few hairs was a small price to pay.

Careful. Don't let him hear you.

It took a few tense and painful minutes with her hands bound, but eventually Sakura succeeded. The tape was off.

There, now you can breathe a bit easier. What about your hands?

Struggling proved useless, but now that her heart had slowed a little, Sakura realised something else. Tight as the rope was, he'd clearly done it quickly.

She felt around in the dark and found what she was looking for: a loose end in the knot.

Now I know I'm being watched. How creepy is that?

Yusuke brushed a plant aside and leapt over the log in his way.

Yeah, I owe a MAJOR apology to the locker room girls after second period gym…

A rustling behind Yusuke caused him to jump in alarm. He pressed himself against a tree for cover before leaping out with his finger ready for a Spirit Gun.

A giant crow flapped by with a squawk. Yusuke ground his teeth and broke into a sprint.

I've got to get out of Sniper's territory and back to rescuing Kuwabara!

Running around like this had wasted enough time already. Yusuke raced out of the forest, up the hill and leapt onto the highway. He looked both ways, and spotted the truck coming in his direction.

"It's my lucky day," Yusuke muttered. "I'll just hitch a ride with this guy to the nearest phone booth. That is, if he doesn't think I'm a cult member with all these freakish tattoos - huh?"

Now that the vehicle was getting closer, Yusuke realised something. The driver's seat was empty.

"Sniper?! Whatever happened to just plain bullets?!"

He ran, jumping over the barricade and back into the forest. But the screeching of metal and the sound of trees being uprooted told Yusuke the truck was following him at full speed.

"Man, you are SO gonna hear from Greenpeace about this!" he roared in case Sniper was listening. And he was.

"It's always so much more exciting when they run," From his vantage point on the cliff, Sniper watched Yusuke running for his life through a pair of binoculars.

He snickered at the sight, but the exhaustion overtaking his body was no laughing matter.

Maybe I overdid it. That truck drained a lot of my energy…

Resigned, Sniper took out his gun.

No more games. I can't risk losing my territory.

Yusuke forced himself to keep moving forward, but the truck was gaining on him.

He had to pick a fuel truck. If I shoot it with my spirit gun, it'll blow my face off! Damn it, where's Kura when you need her?!

By now, the Spirit Detective had reached the cliff where Sniper was watching. Yusuke looked up and spotted the gun barrel aimed right at him.

"I see. Killing me with a truck isn't enough, huh?" he snapped.

BANG!

The bullet fired and hit the truck's fuel tank. A colossal explosion sent Yusuke flying through the air.

The demon insect infestation seemed to have doubled since their first trip to Mushiyori City. But true to their word, Kurama quickly spotted Kaito and Yana waiting for them as they exited the station.

Yana swatted a bug out of the way. He gave Kurama a questioning look. "I thought we didn't want to storm the cave?"

"That was before Kuwabara was kidnapped," Botan explained softly. "And Sakura…" She swallowed hard.

Yana blinked. "Huh?"

"We'll give you the recap later," Genkai gestured to the item Kaito held. "So did you figure out how to get to this hole in the ground?"

"Of course," Kaito held out the detailed map he'd brought along. "I sketched this by hand. And yes, it is to scale," He pointed at the giant X marked on the paper. "Now we're here, and this is the entrance to Demon's Door,"

Mitari took a closer look at the map and nodded. "Yeah, that looks right,"

Kaito turned to him. "And you are…?" he enquired.

"He's on our side," Kurama said. "Now, anyway. He has inside knowledge of the cave,"

"Pleased to meet you," Mitari said with a respectful bow. Kaito and Yana exchanged a look.

"Deal with it boys, we need the help," Genkai said without looking up from the map. "We have no idea what's waiting for us in that cave,"

Genkai motioned for them to start moving. After a few metres, Kaito pushed up his glasses and glanced at Kurama, then Genkai. "So, Master Genkai. What did you say happened to Kuwabara? And Sakura?"

The old woman started to explain, briefly. Kurama turned away so nobody would see him gritting his teeth and thought about what challenges lay ahead. Sensui would no doubt make access to the cave very difficult. But that wouldn't stop him from getting to his flower. He'd find a way, regardless of the obstacles in his path…

A hand went on his shoulder. "I don't know why Mr Sensui wanted Miss Kura, but I'll do whatever I can to help you save her from Ghost," Mitari said with a hardened expression. "She was kind to me, and I…" he lowered his gaze.

Kurama swallowed. "Is there…anything else you might be able to tell us about Haruki?" The pain in his heart was making speech difficult.

"Mr Sensui spent more time training him than anyone else," Mitari admitted. "Honestly, I think there's more than Technique Binary in his arsenal,"

"It would be wise to assume so, but every technique has some flaw,"

Kurama looked more determined than ever. Now that his head was clearer, another thought came to mind. The taunting note left by Haruki had been written by someone self-assured of victory. And in his experience, an enemy so overconfident would make mistakes. It was just a matter of time.

Did Sensui or Haruki really believe that they could steal such a priceless jewel and escape without consequences? Never. They would learn exactly what such a crime would entail.

They won't keep us apart, my precious Kura. I'm going to find you.

He had his plants, his strategies, and the power of Yoko Kurama at his disposal. Haruki would never touch her again. He'd ensure it.

"Just kill me now!" Kuwabara howled. "Put me out of my misery! I didn't like Toguro the first time, and I certainly don't like his leftovers wrapped around!"

Gourmet laughed. "You'll be well-done soon,"

"Stop drooling or all you'll eat are flies," Sensui scolded.

Gourmet scowled. "I'm hungry!" He grumbled.

Sensui turned to Kuwabara. The mouth of the cave was now visible at the bottom of the hill. "Now you do realise the sooner you cooperate, the sooner we'll grant your death wish?"

"And I would die before I cooperate with you!" Kuwabara snapped. "Looks like we got ourselves a catch 22!"

Game Master looked skeptically in the rear view mirror. "You sure he's the one? He's about as powerful as a hamster from what I pick up, and he's twice as annoying!"

"Patience, Game Master," Sensui smirked. "We'll see his power soon,"

"You'll see my fist down your throat is what you'll see! Then stars, then nothing but black! You got that, punk?"

Finally, the truck came to a stop at the cave entrance.

"We're here," Gourmet grinned while dragging Kuwabara out of the back and onto the ground.

Kuwabara growled. "Hey, I got legs, you know!"

"We'd hate you to waste precious energy on walking," was all Sensui said.

Gourmet hauled Kuwabara past the barrier and into the cave mouth. Sensui watched without emotion while Gourmet gradually released his tentacles and tied Kuwabara with a length of rope instead.

"Let me go!" Kuwabara yelled. "Let me go, let me go, let me go!"

Nobody replied, but the sound of a vehicle approaching caught everybody's attention. A black car, pulling up next to the truck amidst a cloud of dust.

"Huh?" Gourmet sounded a little stunned. "How about that? Looks like Ghost came through for us after all,"

Sensui slipped his hands in his pockets and chuckled. "You sound surprised, Gourmet. I would've thought you of all people would know how good the boy is at following orders,"

Gourmet threw back his head and laughed loudly. "Good point,"

"Game Master, wait here," Sensui ordered. "Gourmet, I have a feeling your assistance may be necessary for this delivery,"

"Sure thing, Boss,"

A hideous smile spread across Gourmet's face. He and Sensui approached the car, all the while ignoring Kuwabara's furious demands to know what was going on.

Sniper looked down at the fireball he'd created with a satisfied smile. The Spirit Detective couldn't have survived such a blast. His work was done.

Wait.

His eyes narrowed. Someone was approaching from behind. But who? Surely not Yusuke. He turned quickly. Yusuke was behind him, being supported by a small figure in a black robe.

"This can't be!" Sniper stared at the stranger. "Who are you?"

No response. Those piercing red eyes seemed to look right through him.

Yusuke raised his head and saw his saviour properly. "Hiei?" he asked weakly.

"Don't get sentimental, Detective," Hiei took a few steps towards Sniper.

"I have no quarrel with you, stranger," Sniper said with his gun aimed to kill. "But I also don't mind killing anyone who stands in our way,"

No response.

"Last warning!" Sniper started to squeeze the trigger. Hiei continued to approach. He had no fear.

The gun fired, but Hiei had vanished from sight. Sniper looked around wildly, but it was too late. Hiei's sword had already done what was necessary.

Yusuke gasped in horror. "HIEI!"

"What, now I'm not even allowed to kill the bad humans?" Hiei snorted. "It's a few inches from his heart, if that's what you're worried about,"

Sniper collapsed, and the targets on Yusuke's body slowly faded to nothing. It was over.

Yusuke stared in utter disbelief. "You… you saved me!"

"I was worried about the trees,"

Hiei turned his face into the breeze. "This wind coming in feels like home. It's comforting and it soothes me. It tastes like freshly spilled blood and the rotting flesh of decaying corpses,"

Hiei walked to the edge of the cliff and looked past Yusuke, out at Mushiyori city in the distance.

"Look at it," he said fondly. "The gateway to Demon World will be open soon. Maybe I'll return home,"

Yusuke had no words for what he was watching. The entire town was encased in a dome of energy, and the pulsing beam was travelling into an ominous portal in the sky.

The sight was horrifying.

"Damn it!" Yusuke slammed a fist into the rock, hard enough to leave a dent.

"I beat Toguro," he growled through clenched teeth. "And after that I assumed everything else would… would just be a big old piece of cake. And then some rogue Spirit Detective has to go and open up the…FRICKING GATES OF HELL! Gah!"

With a roar of sheer frustration, Yusuke hauled himself up and started limping away.

"And to top it all off, Kuwabara has to get himself all kidnapped…"

"You're in no shape to be playing the hero," Hiei deadpanned.

"Well if I don't, who will?!" Yusuke whirled around in a rage. "Not you, remember?! 'This is our world, not yours?' See you. I have to go save the world again!"

He was leaving, but a sudden movement behind him caused him to freeze. Hiei was leaping for him, sword out.

"I'm afraid I can't let you do that!"

The blade swung, missing Yusuke by millimetres. He gasped, and landed on the ground with the sword tip delicately poking into the flesh on his neck.

"For the second time today I hold your life in my hands," Hiei smirked. "Somehow I doubt this Sensui will be as merciful as I,"

The fire demon laughed, but Yusuke wasn't amused.

"Kuwabara needs me," he whispered.

Hiei snorted. "Kuwabara was ill-prepared for them, and look what happened to him,"

That made Yusuke see red. He was so angry, he actually snarled before getting in Hiei's face.

"Shut UP!"

Hiei glared at the boy. "Do I have to kill you to keep you from being foolish?"

"You just might, Hiei!" Yusuke snapped. They stared at each other for a moment. The very air between them seemed to crackle with anticipation.

Hiei's eyes glowed white. In one swift motion, he had cast his robe aside and began powering up.

"It's been too long since our last fight," he said quietly.

The force of Hiei's aura sent Yusuke back a few metres, but the moment he righted himself, Yusuke began to flare his power as well.

Hiei was already charging. "You ready?!" he yelled.

"BRING IT ON, BITCH!"

Sakura finished removing the ropes around her ankles and tossed them away just as the car skidded to a halt. Her heart started pounding again.

We've stopped. Why? Has he arrived?

The dizziness was still affecting her comprehension. She closed her eyes and sucked in another deep breath while trying to summon a spirit blast. Nothing happened.

My spirit energy still isn't working for some reason. I'm positive he's behind that. That limits my options to fight back. But I have to. I have to try.

Sakura heard Haruki laughing as he exited the car and slammed the door behind him. The sound sent shivers down her spine, but she listened hard. There were voices outside.

"Ghost. You made it just in time," It was Sensui.

Haruki's voice moved around the side of the car. "Yes, Mr Sensui. Just as we planned,"

"Any sign of a pursuit?" Sensui asked.

Haruki laughed again. "No, sir. Nothing to report from our last contact,"

"Excellent. And the girl's condition?"

Sakura covered her mouth to stop herself from crying out. So he really was waiting for her.

I have to focus. My only chance is to catch them off guard. Kuwabara, I'm sorry. I don't think I'll be able to get you out just yet.

"Still unconscious," Haruki's excitement was nauseating. "But when she wakes up…I'll be ready,"

It was Sensui's turn to laugh. "You've done well, my boy. I'm impressed,"

"Speak for yourself," a new voice said. "What's with the blood on your face? Did the broad put up a fight?"

Sakura didn't recognise the speaker. Must be Game Master, or Gourmet. But where's Kuwabara?

Haruki scoffed. "What's it to you, Gourmet?"

"Nothing much," Gourmet snickered. "I just can't believe you let such a tiny little whore get the better of you,"

Sakura heard a loud thud followed by the sound of a body hitting the ground.

"Shut up!" Haruki shouted furiously. "In and out in ten seconds. I'd like to see you do better!"

"Ghost, that's enough," Sensui's voice caused everyone to fall silent. "And the same goes for you, Gourmet,"

Haruki was breathing heavily. "Yes Mr Sensui. Now what?"

The footsteps started getting closer. Sakura held her breath. Her heart was almost throwing itself against her rib cage. When the trunk opened, she'd only have a split second to react. She couldn't waste it.

"Where's your guest now?" Sensui's voice was right above her.

"I tied her up and put her in the trunk just to be safe," Haruki muttered. "Haven't heard anything since then,"

Sensui laughed again. "I see. Perhaps we should wake her up,"

Sakura quickly lay down on her front and stayed very still. She heard the key being inserted.

You can do this. You can do this.

Three. Two. One. The trunk creaked open. Sunlight and fresh air overwhelmed Sakura, but she still didn't move.

"How's our little Sleeping Beauty?" Gourmet sneered.

One of the men reached in and started stroking through her hair. That was it.

Sakura immediately reared herself up and swung her fist. Initially blinded by the light, she felt it connect with someone's face.

"What?!" Haruki gasped. "How did you -?"

Sakura scrambled to get out of the trunk and fell heavily on the ground. Though her head was spinning, she rolled over, pushed herself up and started to run.

"Oh no you don't!" Haruki shouted. He was already in pursuit.

Sensui chuckled softly and nodded to Gourmet. "Go on,"

Sakura didn't dare look back, but inside she knew that there was no escaping this. She had absolutely no idea where she was, or where to go. And without her spirit energy, there was no hope. Even so, Sakura wasn't giving up.

Keep going…don't stop…!

Haruki was reaching out to seize her when something wrapped around Sakura's middle, pinning her arms to her sides. She fell to her knees while struggling to free herself.

What the hell is this? How did they…huh?

Sakura looked down at the bindings with growing horror. She recognised them.

These…these are tentacles! But they look just like -

The tentacles jerked Sakura backwards, towards the vehicles. When she came to a halt, strong hands dragged her upright and she was thrown at Sensui's feet.

"Sakura Urameshi," he smirked. "I trust you had a pleasant journey?"

Sakura couldn't answer. She didn't have any strength left. Her head had started to whirl again, worse than she'd felt in the car.

A frantic yell came from inside the cave. "Kura?! Is that you?"

"Kuwabara!" Sakura's voice was weak and raspy and she doubted he could hear. "Kuwabara, I -"

"What the heck are you doing here?!" Kuwabara kept yelling. "Where's Urameshi?"

Sensui didn't even glance at the cave. "Game Master, would you please take care of him?"

"Sure thing boss!" a child's voice said, followed by the sound of a kick and Kuwabara groaning.

Sakura gasped. "No, leave him alone!" she choked.

"Shut up!" Gourmet slapped her face so hard she hit the gravel again.

"NO!" a furious voice roared.

Sakura raised her head slightly to see Haruki's hands fastened around Gourmet's throat.

"You don't touch her!" Haruki snarled. "You don't ever touch her like that! I've waited too long to get my answers!"

Answers? Sakura thought wearily. What's he talking about?

Sensui gave them both a look. "Gentlemen, please. This is unnecessary,"

Haruki hissed but released Gourmet. He came back over to where Sakura was cowering on the ground. A bruise was already forming on her cheek. Haruki reached for her, but the girl shrunk away in terror.

How are you still alive?

Gourmet massaged his neck for a moment before fixing Sakura with a hideous grin. "So, Sleeping Beauty woke up early," he snickered. "We'll have to do something about that, boss,"

"Why did you bring me here?" It was all Sakura could get out. "What do you want from me?"

Sensui laughed. "You're supposed to be more intelligent than your brother. I'm surprised you haven't already worked it out,"

"Then I guess you're as stupid as you look, Sensui," Sakura spat. "Because I don't have the first clue,"

The restraints tightened, dragging her closer to Sensui. He took her face in his hand and inspected her closely.

"You were correct, Ghost. A combination of beauty and grit,"

Sakura pulled away. "Don't touch me!"

"As you wish," Sensui smiled politely. "I've been waiting to meet you for a long time, Miss Urameshi. You're going to be most helpful in the final stage of our great endeavour. Especially once Yusuke arrives,"

Sakura's head pounded. The dizziness only seemed to be getting worse, but she glared at Sensui with loathing.

"So I'm bait to lure Yusuke in? Is that it?"

Sensui chuckled. "Simple-minded girl. The tunnel's epicentre is here. As if we needed any more bait. No, I'm afraid we have much bigger plans for you,"

"You think I'll help you destroy the world? Not a chance!" Sakura said fiercely before kicking at Gourmet. "Let go of me!"

Her captors laughed. "You can't leave so soon, sweet pea," Gourmet chortled. "Haruki spent too much time getting the place ready for you,"

"That's right," Haruki's hands came down on her shoulders from behind. "Wait til you see the present I got you, honey. You'll love it,"

"No!" Sakura's panic was mounting. "You're crazy! Get the hell off me!"

Sensui shook his head. He seemed more amused than ever.

"Perhaps we should continue this discussion once you've calmed down," he nodded to his minions. "Gourmet, do you have the extra dose?"

"Right here, boss," Gourmet smirked and handed something over to Haruki.

Sakura's blood went cold. Another syringe. "Please, no! Not that!"

Gourmet's tentacles tightened even more. Sakura cried out, half from pain and half from terror.

"It's a good thing Doctor Kamiya got your precise measurements, Sakura," Sensui smiled. "Without them, we wouldn't have been able to give you the right dosage,"

She stared at him in disbelief. A memory threw itself up from the deepest chasm of her mind. Mushiyori City. The hospital…

An unexpected punch in the stomach knocked Sakura down on the ground. Kamiya had avoided her attack by batting it away with the psychic scalpel. With a sinister chuckle, he leapt on top of Sakura and pinned her hands above her head.

"Kura, NO!"

"Shut up or I'll kill her!" Kamiya warned. He turned back to Sakura. "Now, what's my diagnosis for you?"

Sakura spat in his face. Growling, Kamiya seized a fistful of the girl's hair and slammed her head into the ground with deliberate force.

"No, stop!" Yusuke cried desperately.

Kamiya's eyes swept over Sakura's body. "Just like I thought. Fourteen years old, five foot three inches tall, weighs ninety nine pounds,"

The little colour left in Sakura's face drained away. They'd been planning this from the very beginning. This whole time, Sensui had been slowly working through each step of his plan, and now she was caught in the centre of his evil web. None of them had ever seen it coming.

More tears fell from Sakura's eyes. "You can't," she whimpered. "You can't do this!"

"Just relax, honey," Haruki crooned. "You're getting yourself all worked up,"

"Haruki… please don't!" Sakura begged hysterically. "Please!"

Gourmet's piggy little eyes were shining. "Just one sec, Ghost," he turned his gaze to Sakura's white face.

"You recognise the fingers, don't you sweet pea?" he asked. "Bet you're wondering where I got them,"

Her eyes went even wider. "Don't tell me…"

Gourmet's lips were at her ear. "That's right, Miss Urameshi!" His voice had taken on a new tone. A familiar one that made her legs weak. "And I can't wait to see your fox again!"

Sakura didn't have time to react beyond a gasp of horror. The needle stabbed into her neck and she collapsed almost instantly, just like in her bedroom.

At last, Gourmet retracted his fingers. Haruki lifted Sakura into his arms and stared at her. She was finally his, just as Sensui had promised.

"Let's go," Sensui led them back into the cave where Game Master was waiting impatiently.

"Sensui!" Kuwabara snapped. "What's going on? If you've done something to hurt Kura then you're dead! You hear me?! Dead!"

Sensui slipped his hands in his pockets. "You're hardly in a position to be making threats, Kuwabara. Not that it matters; I haven't touched the girl. Ask her yourself,"

Kuwabara squinted at the silhouette entering the cave, but Game Master stepped in front of him.

"Let me see! Wow, she's pretty!"

The silhouette growled softly. "Don't touch her, kid. I won't tell you again,"

Game Master jumped out of the way, allowing Kuwabara a second look. The first thing he made out was the man's face, and his eyes went wide.

"You!" he gasped.

There was no getting around it. The scarred face, the scruffy brown hair… Sakyo's crazed bodyguard from the Dark Tournament was standing over him.

"This can't be!" Kuwabara breathed. "You're dead! You died when Sakyo blew up the stadium!"

Haruki laughed. "I'm afraid not, Kuwabara. Mr Sakyo made sure of that,"

He stepped closer, and Kuwabara finally saw that he was carrying an unconscious Sakura.

"Kura!" Kuwabara yelled. "Hey, wake up! Can you hear me?!"

She didn't respond.

"Kura! Please wake up! Come on!"

A swift kick from Gourmet silenced Kuwabara. "Don't waste your breath. She ain't waking up anytime soon,"

"What the hell did you do to her?!" Kuwabara demanded. "Why is she even here?"

Haruki snorted and brought Sakura closer to his chest. "That's none of your concern,"

"You crazy freak!" Kuwabara roared. "Just you wait. When Urameshi and Kurama get here, they'll pound your ass into the pavement!"

Haruki was already walking away into the darkness. It was a long walk to his den. He didn't have time to listen to that blockhead.

"Whatever. I'll see you down there, Mr Sensui,"

Kuwabara's furious yelling faded into the distance. Once it was finally quiet, Haruki stopped walking and looked down at Sakura.

The scratches on her neck were still oozing blood and the bruising was only getting more pronounced. Even so, he drank in the feeling. Sakura finally belonged to him alone. After watching the footage of her for months, he was actually holding her. After waiting patiently, he was going to be able to ask her everything. And she would answer.

"You don't need to be scared, honey. We'll be there soon," Haruki murmured.

He couldn't wait to see the look on Sakura's face when she saw how he'd done it all up. Only the best for the girl who was going to give him answers.

"I made it nice for you," he whispered down to her. "You'll like it, I promise,"

She didn't respond.

With a smile, Haruki hauled Sakura's limp form over his shoulder. She might've gotten loose in the car, but once they got to his den, he'd make sure it wouldn't happen again.

"Sakura, it's almost time,"

Lightning flashed, illuminating the shadowy figure in a pool of dull light.

"You…" she stared out into the void. "Is this real?"

His face was still obscured, but Sakura knew he was smiling. He was closer than he'd ever been before.

"You must stay strong, child," he said quietly. "The greatest danger is yet to come,"

"I don't think I can be," Sakura whispered. "I'm scared. I don't know what to do,"

He shook his head. "Your strength has grown beyond what you realise. I've known it all along,"

Sakura wanted to get closer. His presence was comforting, and familiar somehow. But the distance was still too great.

Tears rained down her face. "Why am I here?" she sobbed. "What does Sensui want from me?"

"Sensui's desires have little to do with you, child. He and the others must follow their own path,"

"The others?" Sakura frowned. "What do you mean?"

The stranger didn't answer right away. "The only one you can control is yourself," he said at last. "Whatever one may wish you to do, the choice must be yours,"

Sakura felt herself being enveloped in a protective aura. Her courage seemed to return.

"I don't want to be used," she declared. "I don't want to hurt anyone,"

He smiled again. "You don't have to do anything you don't want to. Trust me, I know firsthand,"

She cocked her head. "You do?"

"Yes. You'll understand soon,"

More lightning flashed. He looked behind him. "The distance may have been reduced, but I cannot stay any longer,"

"No!" Sakura cried. "Please, don't leave me! I can't be alone with them!"

A fierce gale whipped up. His white hair was being blown around. "You're not alone, child. You never have been,"

Another flash of purple lightning streaked across a giant red sky. Was that Mushiyori City? No… this city was in the middle of a vast desert. That same forest. The armies prepared for war. The great chasm…

"You're strong, Sakura. You can do this. I have seen it," He was fading, almost out of sight.

Sakura fell to her knees in despair. "I'll do my best," she breathed. But in her heart, she dreaded what might be waiting for her on the other side.
