"It is nothing short of miraculous," said the voice. Rey could hear it, somewhere far above her. But the voices were not important. She was floating somewhere peaceful, where nothing hurt and nothing weighed on her. The distant conversation continued, "Her organs seem to be regenerating themselves. . . In thirty years of practicing medicine, I have never seen anything like it."
Her hand was lightyears away but still she thought she felt a gentle pressure on her fingers. A deep soft voice said, "The Lady Rey is strong in the force. Is she out of danger?"
Don't call me that, Rey wanted to protest but her voice floated just out of reach, unavailable to her.
"If her body continues as it has, she should be fully recovered in seven to ten days. We will support her system with fluids and nutrients but I think the best course of action is to let her rest and allow her body to see to its own recovery."
"Thank you Dr. Dagri. Please, send General Hux in to me."
"Emperor," A sharp edged voice fell down on her, like hard rain.
"What have you learned about the shooter?" His voice was harder now too.
"Very little, I'm afraid."
The soft light of the place she occupied flickered. Rey felt cold and then hot.
"I am displeased, General Hux."
It grew darker, a wave of something rough and furious washed over her.
"My profoundest apologies, Emperor."
"What do we know?"
"Master Ka'Mar has been researching the . . . method. He is waiting to report to you. The shooter is not a bounty hunter or established professional though it's clear he had some kind of training. No ident marks. No reference in the old databases. Our agents are reaching farther afield for answers but it's obvious we're dealing with some kind of fanatic. Of course, that raises a number of other questions."
"Is he a single agent or just one in a movement?"
"An agent of the resistance-"
"No. General Organa would never risk the life of the last Jedi."
The waves continued to grow. She wanted to stay here, in the soft place but the voices were getting louder.
"What of Admiral Roerne?"
"He was responsible for the security arrangements aboard this ship. He has failed the Empire."
The light died and Rey found herself paddling in the dark, the voices like thunder around her.
"A shame. He was a useful commander-"
Panic gripped Rey. With a kick, she pushed upward, tried desperately to find the surface-
"I will not tolerate-"
