"You're going to punish the Dursleys, aren't you?" Harry asked quietly, as he and Dave sat in the park this time. It was over a week later and they spent nearly all day together and somehow Harry's chores still got done and none of his family missed him. Harry knew somehow instinctively that his grandfather was doing some type of magic to accomplish this, but since he wasn't working himself to the bone, getting more than adequately fed and was actually enjoying himself for the first time in his young life he wasn't about to complain. He had actually gained several pounds due to being overstuffed at every meal and Dave seemed determined that he would soon be at the normal size and weight for a child his age. His aunt and uncle hadn't noticed that he had gained several pounds and he suspected that his grandfather had something to do with this as well.
It was actually really nice to have someone to care about him, Harry thought silently. Someone that was actually related to him.
"They more than deserve to be," Dave said calmly his tone firm. He and Harry sat together on a bench in the park close to Magnolia Crescent. It was the same park that Dave had opened a portal, except he had done so in a little clearing under the cover of the trees.
"I can't allow them to get away with the abuse they heaped upon you and not just because you're my grandson. They will likely never be punished in this life if I don't do so and if I don't, then they will never learn the error of their ways. When I find out who placed you in such an abusive environment and never checked to make sure you were happy and well cared for then they too will get what's coming to them.
"Whoever is your guardian has a responsibility to their charges and having that kind of power means that they must live up to the responsibility the position brings. That this person whoever they are just blithely placed you with your supposed aunt and didn't bother to make sure that she would be a suitable guardian speaks of neglect of their responsibility at the very least."
Dave had never actually met Vernon Dursley, but had heard his grandson describe him so that he could recognize him instantly. When he had seen the man from a distance just the other day Dave had to agree with his grandson's description, because Vernon Dursley was indeed a walrus of a man, extremely overweight and it was clear that he needed to lose some, because his health was going to be affected as he got older otherwise. His son wasn't much better according to Harry, though Dave hadn't had the somewhat questionable pleasure of seeing him at all.
Dudley Dursley was already massively overweight according to Harry, even though he was only six years old and Dave hated to imagine what he would look like in 10 years. Unless he started exercising and eating less by the time he reached his teenage years he would look just like his father, which in this case, was not a good thing.
"I knew your parents personally, though of course, I knew my daughter much better and there's no way that they wouldn't have named a guardian for you, someone they trusted to do right by you. I don't see my daughter at least naming her 'sister' because she knew very well what Petunia was like. I didn't know your father well unfortunately, but then there really wasn't much time too. I know that if they had lived that we would have spent quite a bit of time getting to know each other better. I knew him well enough to know however, that he adored your mother and would have done anything for her, even die in order to make sure that she and you were safe."
"So you couldn't do anything to protect them?" Harry asked.
"Perhaps, I could have, if I had realized the danger they were in, but whenever we got together they never mentioned it and while I can't fault either one for this, as they would've wanted to handle whatever danger there was themselves, I might've been able to protect them and you. Your mother knew sídhe magic as well as wand waving magic, so whatever she did protected her only child from this Voldemort character.
"I know that both your parents would have been very happy that you had lived and both would have given their lives for that outcome, but I also know they'd be furious that you were placed with Petunia and her family, especially if they're watching you from the beyond and see how you're being treated.
"I can't see any guardian that your parents assigned abandoning their responsibilities, so my best guess is something happening to him or her that stopped them from fulfilling those responsibilities as your guardian. Of course, I will admit that it would've been possible to fool your parents and it might be the guardian they assigned that placed you with Petunia."
"But you don't think so," Harry suggested shrewdly.
"I don't, but it's still possible I'm wrong," Dave shrugged. "We'll know soon enough, once I discover who placed you with Petunia, you'll just have to be patient until then."
"I suppose I can't talk you out of punishing Petunia and Vernon," Harry said.
"You can't, because they more than deserve to be punished and if I don't do so then, it's likely they won't be punished until they're dead and perhaps, not even then," Dave said. "I won't kill them, that's a promise and the punishment will be appropriate."
Harry said nothing else on that subject knowing that his grandfather wasn't likely to tell him what he had in mind at least not right now as he was still quite young, even by humans standards. Perhaps, he could get his grandfather to tell him what he had done once he was older, but Dave had certain ideas of what was appropriate for a young child to know and despite the fact that he often felt like he was 20 or more he was still technically, only six, as he had celebrated his birthday just a few days ago. His grandfather had gone all out for his birthday and it was the first one he could remember celebrating, because his relatives certainly never remembered the day and even if they had Harry doubted they would have done anything at all other than giving him more chores to do.
Harry had known for a long time that his relatives didn't care about him, though he had yet to figure out what he had done to earn such a hell of a life, where he worked from dawn to dusk with inadequate food and then he was stuffed in his cupboard when those chores were done.
He was treated worse than an animal and wore clothes that were much too big for him. Considering that they were Dudley's castoffs, as Petunia and Vernon would never waste the money to buy him anything new, this was not surprising.
"So how will you make me disappear to this otherworld without anybody raising the alarm?" Harry asked.
"I will make everyone believe that you just ran away due to intolerable conditions. If there's one thing I know it's that making your relatives lose their vaunted reputation within their community will be one way to get revenge. Maintaining their perfect reputation is very important to them and I will make the neighbors see that you were not a troublemaker like they told everyone.
"The people of this community believe the Dursleys reputation instead of looking underneath to see the lies. This too will be my revenge on the community that refused to see that you were being more than mistreated. These are decent people and most of them will feel guilty for believing the Dursleys lies. Once you have disappeared I'm sure they'll feel guilty for not seeing that you were being abused."
"If you're sure," Harry said dubiously.
"Trust me, guilt can eat away at you if you don't do something about it and they'll feel guilty for not helping you and they might even believe that you're dead. A lot of other runaways do turn up dead if they are not found in a few days and considering that you're only six that would be the likely fate if you actually had run away and the authorities didn't find you in two or three days.
"The chances of you surviving on the street are next to none, because there are many predators and other dangers to living on the street with no shelter and little food except that dug out of trashcans, which is not healthy. You might find somewhere relatively warm to curl up like an abandoned building for example, but the likelihood of finding one that isn't condemned or already occupied are slender at best.
"Also, there are drug dealers and other people who would take a child like you and drag them into a life of slavery before you could protest. Very few children survive any length of time on the street, particularly ones as young as you are. Most adults will be well aware of this and when they realize that you weren't really a troublemaker, but just a child who was trying to survive the guilt will eat most of them whole. There will be some who don't care of course, but most of the neighborhood are likely good people."
The two sat in silence for awhile and Dave produced a picnic basket from somewhere, though Harry knew that it had been done by magic as he was well used to his grandfather's tricks by now.
Still, magic or not the food was good and much better then he had ever had before and that was all that mattered. He was used to being fed on table scraps and so to have real food instead of just what was left from his relative's meals was still something of a novelty.
"Do you want to come to the otherworld with me for a visit? You don't have to stay if you don't want to, but I can at least show you around the realm I created. You can meet your grandmother and believe me she'll love you to death when she learns that you are the son of her daughter. Neither of us was aware that Sosanna was pregnant."
"Why do you call my mother Sosanna?" Harry asked curiously. "You mentioned that name before when we first met. I've been meaning to ask but keep getting distracted."
"Because that was the name we gave her when she was born," Dave explained. "It means lily and when she decided she wanted to be educated at Hogwarts, she changed it to Lily because it was much more normal then Sosanna and she didn't want to stick out just because of her unusual name. It was a pretty amazing coincidence actually, since her adoptive sister's name is also a flower. If the Evanses daughter hadn't died she also would have been named after a flower as it was a tradition in the wife's family."
"So mom changed it just so she wouldn't stick out because of her unusual name," Harry summarized and Dave nodded.
"Considering what she was, it was a wise precaution. Somebody might never have remarked on her unusual name since there are quite a few people with rather weird names, particularly within the British wizarding community, even in the 70s, but still it didn't hurt to be cautious. It is believed by the British wizarding world for the most part that the sídhe never come into the human realm and are content to remain in the otherworld and while this is not true it won't do to shatter that particular belief. A lot of people don't believe that we even exist anymore, if we ever did and we would like to remain a fairy tale or a legend to most people if at all possible."
Dave began to tell him stories that he had heard from his daughter and others he had heard from James. He talked about the Marauders and the pranksters they had been.
"So did you ever meet them? This Sirius Black and Remus Lupin?" Harry asked.
"No unfortunately, I never had that chance. I really didn't have much chance to see my daughter after she was married as they were killed not too long after that. I suppose I should've kept a closer eye on them, but they were newlyweds and newlyweds like to be left alone. I know they were at the wedding and in fact, Sirius Black was the best man, but as I said my wife and I stayed in the background as much as possible for my daughter's safety mostly, for it was not the time to reveal our connection considering the rather dangerous times. Voldemort was a serious threat by then and Sosanna feared that something would happen that could be prevented if our connection wasn't kept secret. I didn't necessarily agree with her, but Sosanna could be stubborn so I had to accede to her wishes if I had any hope of meeting my grandchildren or being part of my daughter's and grandchildren's lives," Dave explained simply. "Still, from some of the stories I was told Sirius and Remus might be a bit mischievous, but I believe they are good people. I have no idea what happened to either one of them though. I have a feeling if they knew where you had been placed they would have protested and gone to great lengths to free you so I suspect that they don't know."
"I want to come with you," Harry decided and Dave gave him a solemn nod, even though on the inside he was overjoyed.
"I am honored to get to know you better, Harry," Dave said having dropped the young for the most part at Harry's request. Considering how old Dave actually was Harry would always be young to him, but there was no point of reminding him of that. "There're certain things we're going to have to do though before I can take you to my realm."
"What's things?" Harry asked.
"Well, there are spells on your aunt's house, although how they were established, considering that they seem to be based on blood, I have no idea because technically, Lily and Petunia weren't related, even if the Evanses took my daughter in for all her Hogwarts years. The point is though, that if you no longer consider this house your home the wards will collapse, although they're pretty weak to begin with."
"That's probably because I've never considered this home," Harry suggested.
With that the wards collapsed and those that were sensitive to different forms of energy or had magic could feel it as the wards just kind of disappeared with a sound like a car backfiring.
"I'm sorry grandfather I had no idea that would happen," Harry said looking startled and ashamed at the same time.
"It's not really your fault," Dave assured Harry patting his shoulder. "If the wards collapsed, simply because you said that you didn't consider number four Privet Drive home then they were weaker than I believed. However, this changes the complexity of things, because whoever had those wards on a non-magical dwelling will soon be showing up to see what happened and we must be gone before then. At least you must be gone as whoever put you here will likely be keeping a close eye on you for whatever reason. Those wards also had an alert woven into them so whoever put them up will have been alerted when they came down."
"Let's go then," Harry said, as he began to walk purposely towards the trees where Dave always formed a portal into the otherworld.
Dave followed him looking around knowing that whoever had set up those wards would likely already be at the house, but luckily, they were several blocks away in the park, so they wouldn't immediately be found if Harry was looked for.
Dave formed the portal and it was only minutes later that Harry stepped through bravely with Dave following behind.
The portal closed immediately leaving no sign that he had ever been there, except for the fact that there were no sounds of birds and other animals in the area were the portal had just been.
