Enjoy!
Zeus stared out his window impatiently, waiting for the report he needed. It had already been a few days since Apollo had reported Nashi Dragneel gone, and he was through listening to Hades. He was doing this his way from now on. And he knew just what they needed to do.
"Sir," A voice said. Zeus swirled in his chair to find Hephaestus standing there, watching him through his mechanical eye.
"Status," Zeus replied. Hephaestus bowed slightly, which looked awkward for such a stout man.
"We'll be in position in about twelve hours, sir." He said, coughing as he did so. "The rerouting took longer than I expected." Zeus nodded and turned back to look out the window.
"Tell me when we're ready to move," he said.
"Yes sir," Hephaestus replied, leaving his room quietly. Zeus watched the waves below him wash ashore quietly, before sighing and closing his eyes.
This was what should have happening originally. Without Hades fucking it all up.
"We'll have her by tomorrow," He said.
To say that Mest was barraged with questions was a bit of an understatement. As soon as he said that Luna was a blank slate, it seems everyone and their parents anted to ask him something.
"How many times do I have to say it?!" Mest demanded. "If there was anything, anything at all, I could help. Even if there was a trace of magic in there, I could of helped her. But I can't. There's nothing there. Any trace of Nashi that might have been there before isn't there anymore."
It didn't really matter how many times he said it, Drake didn't want to believe it. They'd come all this way, accomplished so much, but now they were learning they had no chance of turning Luna back to who she was before Mt. Olympus. At least not with Mest's help.
Speaking of Luna, she looked the most dejected out of all of them. She had hung her head low after Mest's initial statement, and hadn't looked up since learning they couldn't bring her memories back. Drake couldn't imagine being in her shoes; to have people drag you all this way claiming you're their dead friend, believe them, and then find out you can't ever remember why they love you so much. It hurt his heart just to think about.
"So..." Natsu said slowly. "...Now what?" Mest sighed at this, the guild dead silent.
"I don't know," he replied. "I'm sorry, I really do want to help. But there's nothing I can do." Silence once more fell upon the guild, before Luna took a deep breath and lifted her head to look at Natsu.
"Am I really your daughter?" She asked. Natsu didn't reply for a moment before he nodded sternly.
"I don't have a doubt in my mind," he replied. Luna nodded and stood from her seat, a determined look on her face.
"Then I'll do my best to fill her shoes," she said. "I can't promise things will ever go back to the way they were, but... I'm willing to try." No one said anything for a moment, and then the guild erupted all at once, cheering for Luna as she backed up in surprise. It didn't take very long for mugs to begin to fill with liquor, and before Drake knew it the guild was celebrating like they always had before. It was nice to see that everyone was doing there best to move past what was obviously very difficult for everyone. Then again, that was one of their best skills.
"You okay, Drake?" Drake turned to find his mother walking up to him, looking concerned for him.
"Yeah, I'm fine." he replied as he hugged her close in one arm. "Why?" His mother laughed and gestured widely back to Luna and her parents.
"I felt like I needed to ask," she said. "I mean, her death messed you up pretty bad." Drake frowned and looked back at Luna chocking on her drink as Natsu laughed, making him laugh a little himself.
"I get it," he said. "Too be honest, it's still pretty surreal. But now she's back, and I'll do everything I can to help her."
"Just like you always did, huh?" She asked, making Drake prod her face with his index finger. "Well it's true!"
"Doesn't mean you get to tease me about it," he replied. "Besides, it's what I should do. She trust me."
"Wow, that surprises me." His mother said sarcastically. "Your kitty is okay, by the way. She might be a little bit fatter though." Although a lot more important stuff was happening, Drake looked over at his mother irritably.
"What?" He demanded. "How much did you feed her?"
"...A bit."
"How much is a bit?" He demanded. "I swear Mom, if I go home and my cat is a circle..."
"You haven't even named her, you don't get to give me shit for that!" She replied irritably, poking him right between the eyes. "I thought my name was cute!"
"Your name?" Drake demanded. "You mean Kaida? No."
"Why not?!"
"Ask me after you and Dad get it on again, he's nearby on the airship." Ignoring his mothers flustered and embarrassed look, Drake looked back towards Luna, watching as he listened to her parents talk. She was currently carrying Luke, who looked to be pretty pleased to be with her. Mest's words came back to Drake, and it wasn't any easier to deal with knowing she'd be okay. Drake knew full well that with the support of everyone else in the guild that Luna would be okay. But, at the same time, when he thought about how he'd never again get to look at her and know it was without a doubt the girl he grew up with, hurt him to some degree. But he couldn't focus on that. It wouldn't help him or Luna.
All he had to do know was support her. She needed all the she could get.
After the whole problem with Mest being unable to help Luna, Damien was swept up in the guild as everyone moved to go about their own things, mainly getting drinks. However, he was focused on something else.
"Hey Mom," He said as he reached the bar, making his mother look over at him instead of serving the others. "Sorry we haven't gotten to talk yet, something else kinda took precedence." His mother only smiled at this and continued pouring someone's drink, finishing it before walking over to him.
"I understand that," she said with a wide smile. "I can't believe you guys managed to find her! That's unbelievable." Damien shrugged.
"We were out doing our own thing," he said. "Something unbelievable was bound to happen." She laughed at this, reaching forward across the counter to hold Damien's hand.
"I suppose that's accurate," she said as she watched Damien with a loving smile on her face. "It's so good to see you again, Damien. I missed you so much."
"I know," Damien replied, rubbing small circles on her hand as she smiled even wider. "I'm sorry I left for so long. I didn't intend to be gone for so long."
"No one ever does," she said. "Did you talk to your Dad yet? I'm sure he missed you too."
"Yeah I gotta find him as well," Damien replied as he looked out at the guild, spotting his father talking to Natsu as Luna played with Luke's hands. "Mind if I go and talk to him.
"No, no, I'm used to you leaving me without letting me give you a hug." Damien rolled his eyes and looked back at his mother, who just smirked at him as she pranced away to help other guild members looks for a drink. Rolling his eyes, Damien got up from the bar and made his way for his father, who saw him coming as he did so.
"Damien," He said as he got close, making Natsu look over as well. "It's good to see you."
"You too Dad," Damien said, holding out his arm. His father clasped it tightly, and Luna looked over it surprise.
"Your Dad is the Guild Master?" She asked incredulously. "Wow, you two really do look alike."
"Well, I would hope so. I'm his Dad." Damien's father replied, making Luna laugh awkwardly.
"I mean, I suppose so." she replied. Damien ignored the pain in his chest at this as he looked back to his father.
"You're looking even older Dad," he said with a laugh. "Stress getting to you?" His father just smirked and slapped the back of his head.
"That why you're already sporting white hair?" he asked. "You must be really stressed, Damien."
"Being your son, yeah I am." Damien shot back. "You're ridiculous to deal with."
"Says the Demon Lord." It was friendly banter, but as with most families it still stung a little bit. Looking over, Damien watched Luna play with Luke for a little bit, a sad smile on his face. He wished things were as easy as they were from Luke's perspective. For him, his big sister had just been gone for a little bit and now she was back. He had no memories with Nashi that would mean anything to him if he lost them, no great things to look back on. He was barely a year old, for God sake. But him, and the others? All the memories they had with her didn't mean anything anymore. She was gone, and as far as he knew there was no getting her back. All they had now was Luna, a husk with no recollection of who she was.
As soon as this thought entered Damien's head, he was disgusted with himself. How could he view her like that? If he did, he knew that at some point he'd come to resent her for not remembering anything. And that wasn't going to solve anything. He couldn't dwell on the past, and on the memories he'd lost. Instead he had to make new ones to cherish, and to protect when things went awry again.
Because, he had to face it, they usually did.
Today was the first day in over a year Lucy was waking up and her daughter was alive.
Somehow, she half expected to get up out of bed and have it all be a dream. That she'd walk to the guild hall, ask for Luna and no one would know who she was talking about. Maybe she had dreamed it all up, and none of it was real.
And yet, as she wandered out of her room into the living room, she saw her daughters sitting on the couch, photo album in her lap. She watched for a moment, still as a statue, unsure if this was still part of her dream sequence. And yet, as Luna turned to look at her in dawned on Lucy this was indeed really happening.
"Oh, morning Mom." Luna said with a bright smile on her face. The same smile Lucy remembered, and it dam near brought tears to her eyes.
"G-Good morning sweetheart," she said, fighting the tears to stay in their ducts. "What're you doing up so early?" Luna shrugged and returned to whatever she was doing.
"Couldn't sleep," she replied. "I kinda wanted to look through these again." Walking closer, Lucy saw that she was in fact looking at the photo albums, and she seemed to be studying them in great detail.
"Why's that?" She asked. Luna didn't reply as Lucy sat down next to her, taking a deep breath.
"Who I used to be seems to carry a lot of weight around here," she said. "So, I was hoping I could learn something about her if I looked through these. Maybe I'd jog some sort of memory if I looked hard enough." Lucy managed a smile at this as she watched her flip more pages.
"You heard what Mest said yesterday," she said. "You don't have any memories from Nashi." Luna stopped examining pictures and closed her eyes, sighing.
"I know," she said. "And it really shook me up. But...Seeing how hard everyone fought him for answers afterwords, it really made me realise I wasn't just some one off in this guild. I was a big part of the family, and I hurt all of you so much by dying...Or disappearing, whatever the hell happened to me." At this, she looked over at Lucy with a determined look on her face. "I don't want to hurt you all so much, you've been so nice to me. I need to do what I can." Lucy watched her for a moment before she smiled, no longer able to fight the tears back.
"You're too kind," she said. "Just like you used to be."
"Huh?" Luna asked as she looked back over at Lucy. Lucy wiped the tears from her face as she brought the girl closer to her.
"That's just the way you've always been," she said. "You died to save your friends, to save us from more heartbreak. And now you're doing everything you can to save us from more. What did we do to deserve you?"
"I think a better question is what did I do?" For a moment, both mother and daughter stayed in each others embrace, framed by the morning light coming in through the window. For the better part of the last year, Lucy had felt like some part of her was missing and she wouldn't ever get in back. But sitting there with Luna in her arms, Nothing in the world bothering them, she felt that piece slowly meld back into place. It wasn't the same piece it had been before, but it was doing it's best to fulfil the space it was in. Oddly familiar to the girl next to her.
"Ah man, I missed a bonding moment didn't I?" Both girls looked up to see Natsu standing there in his underwear, Luke in his arms. "I knew something was up when Luce told me I had to go and check on Luke."
"Yeah, because I planned this to exclude you," Lucy said sarcastically. "It's not my fault you're a shitty diaper changer."
"Toilet train him!" Natsu recoiled, seeming irritated. This made Luke cry out in despair, making his father glare at him irritably. "You did this," he said as he prodded at Luke's face, making the baby laugh. "I'll get you back for this someday."
"Come off it, Natsu." Lucy said as she stood and took their son from him. "It's not that big of a deal."
"It kind of is," Natsu replied, a goofy grin dawning on his face. "I just figured out the most flawless strategy." Lucy made a face and stared at him. She knew that face it was the one he made when he was going to do or say something stupid.
"Which is?" She asked, regretting it as soon as the words left her mouth. Natsu laughed and puffed his chest out triumphantly.
"Luna doesn't have any memory!" He said. "Which means I can be there for her all of the time now! All of that gone for years shit doesn't matter now!"
Naturally, Lucy smacked him on the back of the head.
"Don't talk nonsense," she said in a scolding tone. "Luna wants to be as similar to Nashi as she can be. Which means she'll learn all about that." This seemed to deflate Natsu a great deal, and Lucy smiled at this. The simple act that their daughter was alive had raised their spirits a great deal. With her back, Lucy felt like their future was already looking fantastic.
"What the hell is that?" Lucy turned at this to find Luna looking out the window. Walking up beside her, Lucy looked out the window to see what exactly her daughter was looking out.
A bright white light was radiating in the sky above the city, in an oddly cylindrical shape.
"I am never letting Mom look after you again," Drake hissed as he closely examined his feline companion. It had only been a short period of time, yet in that time his roommate had gotten pudgy and out of shape. How the hell had she accomplished this?
"Meow,"
"Seriously, what were you thinking young lady? You're fat!"
"Meow!"
"Yes actually, you are. Seriously, have you looked in the mirror lately?"
"Meow."
"Oh yeah?" Feeling defiant and yet ridiculous, Drake marched his cat to the bathroom and presented her to her own reflection, making her claw at the glass. "See? Look at yourself! This isn't right. Diet time for you, young lady."
"Meow!" Despite the indignant mews at his feet, Drake had made up his mind. Putting considerably less food into the cats bowl then usual, Drake once again ignored the mews and walked into his kitchen, biting into an apple to satisfy his hunger. He couldn't find anything inside the fridge to drink except booze, which was not his drink of choice in the morning.
Anymore, anyway.
Deciding he hadn't dealt with malign anger enough yet, Drake reached for the phone and dialled his mothers number, and she picked up within three rings.
"What's going on, sweetie?" His mothers voice asked.
"You're never looking after my cat ever again," he stated firmly.
"What?! Why?!"
"Have you actually looked at her?!" Drake demanded angrily. "She's fat!"
"She's lovably chubby at worst." She said sternly.
"I respectfully disagree," he said. "I'll get a different sitter next time."
Whatever, you'll come crawling back when-huh?" Drake raised an eyebrow as his mother pause, and he heard the curtains being pulled back. "What the hell is that?"
"What?" Drake asked, confused.
"Look out your window," she replied. Drake did as he was told and walked to his window, peering out of it into the sky. There, among the clouds, he could see a bright white light. As soon as he looked at it, his spine tingled from magical power.
And his eyes widened.
"Mom, get away from your windows!" He shouted, rushing back into his house and grabbing his jacket.
"What?" She asked. "W-Why?"
"Just do it!" He yelled, growing frantic as he held onto the phone with his head and shoulder as he threw on his jacket and rushed back into his kitchen, scooping up his cat as he did so. "And whatever you do, don't go near them again!"
"Drake what's the matter?! Why are you freaking out?!"
It was so obvious to him. Someone who had seen this exact thing before. How could they have been so stupid?
It was them.
"Just do it!" Drake shouted again, no time to explain. "I need to get to the guild hall and warn everyone!" With this he tossed the phone over his shoulder and whipped his front door open. Shielding his cat from the cold within his jacket, he hightailed for the guild hall, breathing growing erratic and panicked.
No no no, not now... I need to hurry!
No one else would know what this was except for him. He'd been right underneath this same thing before. One year before, exactly.
The Olympians satellite was above Magnolia.
Tripping in the snow, Drake twisted to land on his back to protect the kitten. Groaning, Drake looked back up at the blast of magic as it grew in power.
He had no time, he wouldn't make it. Getting to his feet, Drake dove into the nearest store, startling the owners.
"Is there a basement here?!" He shouted.
"D-Drake?" The young woman behind the counter asked. "Y-Yes of course, but..."
"Get down in it, we're about to go sky high here!" Ushering the younger woman and her father into the basement, Drake shut the door and rushed down, the other family already cowering in a corner.
Just as Drake crouched down himself, he felt a searing hot pain on his back.
And his world went white around him.
Surprise attack! What are those scoundrels planning?! I hope you enjoyed, leave a review! Let's try and get five!
Chapter 308: Gone Like The Wind
