Second Day
How did everyone know about the care package? Luz spent all morning explaining that it did not have her name on it and Other Amity doesn't know her name. There's no way she would know that it came from her. No one else thought the same. Luz appreciates the concern and she is being careful. No one seems to trust her judgement.
There she is again, right next to the occupied jail cell. Luz took a long breath again, then peeked into the cell. The two immediately made eye contact. To Luz's surprise, Other Amity was wearing the purple cat sweats that were gifted to her. "Hey," Other Amity said.
"You changed your hair," Luz said without thinking.
"Uh yeah," she responded.
Other Amity's hair was in a ponytail with side bangs. When she rose to her feet, Luz swiveled around and sat down. The situation is very jarring for her. "Thank you for the supplies. It was really thoughtful," Amity sounded sincere.
Maybe it was obvious that it came from her. Thankfully, Luz had a prepared counter. "I don't know what you are talking about. I didn't send you anything."
Luz could tell that she was judging her. She recognized Amity's skeptical expression from behind the bars. She held her palms and innocently smiled back. "Did your wife tell you not to take credit for the care package?" she asked.
"Uh," Luz hesitated. Isn't that a trick question?
"No," She finally answered. Technically a lot more people told her that.
Amity exhaled and said, "Okay, if you say so."
Luz relaxed because Other Amity believed her. Her wife always told her that she was a horrible liar. Maybe her deceitfulness is improving. "Do you like your new clothes?" Luz curiously asked.
"No," Amity swiftly answered.
But, why? She looks so cute in it. Luz had to choke back her words. "But," Amity continued as she sat down with the back towards the bars.
"They're warm and comfortable and get the job done." Amity honestly answered. "Although, I would never buy this for myself."
Luz had to stare in a different direction to hide her disappointment. Maybe she should have chosen a different color or one without a pattern on it. This never happened with her Amity. "Did you like anything else from the care package?" Luz asked trying to change the topic.
"The pillow and sleeping bag; it's almost like I'm camping now," Amity admitted.
"That's good to hear."
"I'm very thankful for the care package."
"Well, whoever sent it would appreciate that."
Other Amity burst into a fit of laughter. Luz wanted to ask what was so funny, but she realized that she was out of time. Luz rose to her feet and dusted herself off. "See ya tomorrow," Luz said over her shoulder.
Other Amity didn't reply to that. The Conformation fell back into its eerily silence as she left the dungeon.
The sun was starting to set, but it was still too early to activate one of the paper-light spells. She had a limited supply and couldn't ask for more. Instead, she tried drawing more spells herself. Drawing a perfect circle is a lot harder than she thought it would be.
A pair of footsteps echoed in the halls. The jailbird didn't bother looking up from the book when one stopped in front of the cell. "Amity," a soft voice greeted her.
Amity didn't recognize the voice, must be a new visitor. She glanced up to see her old childhood friend, but all grown up with long braided hair. She hasn't seen Willow since high school and had no idea what to say to her. She opted for a quick hand wave, then look back down at the drawing.
"Are you enjoying the book? Which chapter are you on?" Willow tried to initiate conversation.
"The introduction," she blankly answered. She didn't bother to read the book; she's only using the blank pages for drawing more spells.
A muffled sound came from the hallway. Willow turned in the direction it came from, muttered that she'll be back, and scurried away. She guessed right. The person hiding from sight was the Other Amity. She's extremely protective. Willow wandered to the front of the cell again, visibly distressed. Her tone was a lot more cautious, "Did a human witch visit recently?"
Why is Willow pretending that she doesn't know her name? "Could you be more specific?" Amity asked back.
The response made her fluster. She shook her head and said, "Forget what I just said."
Just like before, no one would tell her the human's name. Her name is not in the book either. It's probably why this book was given to her.
Willow sighed deeply and said, "I'm sorry about the jail cell. That was a little harsh. But we almost figured out how the portal works and we could send you back to your own timeline soon. You'll get to go home and won't be stuck here with us anymore."
Flashes of Amity's apartment went through her head. She was too busy with survival to think about anything else and she started to feel a little homesick. Then the officer thought about reporting all of this to Emperor Belos and catching up on paperwork that would have piled up by now.
"That will be the end of my vacation," Amity replied back.
That was not the answer Willow was expecting and it was not a good sign. "I guess so. Maybe tomorrow," she said back.
That was the last thing Willow said before she left with the hidden visitor.
