Chapter 313: Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure Part 3
The next morning, Duck was surprised to find Sir Topham Hatt waiting for him. And he did not look happy.
"Good morning, sir."
"Duck, Daisy told me about your little stunt last night. Do you have anything to say for yourself?"
Duck sighed. He should've known Sir Topham Hatt would find out.
"I don't trust him, sir. After everything he's done…"
"I understand your feelings, Duck, I do. And if I had any other choice, I would've brought in anyone else. But Diesel was the only one the Other Railway could send, and everybody else is busy with their own work. I promise, once this is all over he'll be long gone. But until then, please try to at least act civil towards him."
Duck sighed.
"Yes, sir."
"Thank you. Now, off you go!""
"Yes, sir. And don't be too hard on Oliver and Toad, this was my idea."
"I'll keep that in mind, thank you."
"Max, Monty, slow down!"
The twin dump truck drivers laughed, ignoring Kelly's warning as they sped off with their loads. Kelly just sighed in frustration.
"Those two, I swear…"
Oliver chuckled.
"Oh, I wouldn't be too worried about them. Karma always finds a way to bite them in the rear."
"Yes, and then I'll be the one who has to clean up their mess. Just once, I wish those two would learn some sense…"
An hour later, Diesel arrived with more supplies for the construction site. He was just shunting the train into a siding when he felt the ground beneath him begin to shake.
"Woah!"
Quickly, he backed out of the siding. Looking back, he saw that the ground began to sag.
"I'd better tell Miss Jenny at once!"
Miss Jenny surveyed the scene, shaking her head.
"The ground's too unstable," she said at last. "Erosion, if I had to guess. We'll have to mark off the entire area. It's a good thing it was just a siding, at least!"
Diesel silently agreed. The area was roped off, with Miss Jenny and the foreman making sure everyone understood that it was off limits. No one thought any more of it. No one, that is, except for two.
"Bah!" Max snorted. "It can't be that bad!"
"Diesel is probably just a worrywart," Monty agreed. "Besides, why should we trust anything he says? After how he treated Duck, why should we give him the benefit of the doubt?"
"Don't even think about going over there!" Byron snapped. "If Miss Jenny says its not safe, then it's not."
Max and Monty snorted, and rolled away. Everyone just rolled their eyes.
"We need to keep an eye on those two," said Patrick. "They're bound to cause trouble."
"Agreed."
For a while, either Max or Monty would try to ride over the roped off area, trying to test their luck. They didn't think there was anything wrong with it at all, and would do anything to prove it. But Miss Jenny, the Foreman, or the others would stop them every time.
A few days later, work had slowed down for lunch. Everyone was climbing down from their machines, ready for a break. No one was paying any attention to the roped off section, or the twins.
"Now's my chance!"
Before anyone could stop him, Max raced his dump truck toward the roped off area. He crashed right through the barrier, making his dump truck spin as he reached his destination.
"Ha! Told you it was safe, you bunch of crybabies!"
When everyone saw what Max had done, they were horrified.
"Max, what are you doing? Get out of there!"
"Ah, what're you so scared of? It's nothing but a little…"
CRACK!
"What was that?"
To Max's horror, the ground beneath his dump truck was starting to collapse. He wanted to run, but he found himself paralyzed with fear.
"HELP!"
"Hold on Max, I'm coming!"
Kelly rushed forward, and quickly hooked his crane's hook up to Max's dump truck. Revving hard, he pulled Max and his truck to safety, just in time for the ground to collapse, leaving a massive hole in its place.
"Phew! Thanks, Kelly."
"Don't thank me yet. Now you have to deal with Miss Jenny."
Max gulped in fear.
Miss Jenny was not pleased with his antics.
"You were told multiple times how dangerous that area was! You're lucky Kelly was there!"
"Yes, Miss Jenny. Sorry, Miss Jenny."
She then turned sharply towards Monty.
"And don't think you're off the hook either! You're almost as bad, you encouraged him!"
Monty could only look down in shame. MIss Jenny sighed, allowing herself to calm down before continuing.
"Thank goodness no one was hurt. Hopefully, this will teach you two a lesson in listening to orders!"
"Yes, Miss Jenny."
"We'll have to close the site for a while. We can't continue work until we know the rest of the area is safe!"
With that, everyone took their leave, not knowing that deep below the surface lay a very old, very famous pirate ship waiting to be found.
