Kagome is kind of freaking out while at the same time trying desperately not to show she's freaking out. She doesn't want Shippo to think that the Justice League members are a threat of some kind. Because they aren't, not to them at least. The only possible problem is her dad grounding her for eternity by locking her within the manor. Kami, how did she even get into this situation, to begin with?
Here is a brief history of her life up until now. She was absolutely an oops baby. Neither of her parents was trying to have a baby at the time, but she got conceived anyway. A drunk night at a college party was the start of her story. Her mom wasn't in a good place at the time. She didn't have much money, her family disowned her for having a baby out of wedlock, and she couldn't find a decent job anywhere. Her mom tried, she really did, but it just wasn't enough. Her mom tried for two years to raise her, but she just couldn't keep up with everything. She could no longer keep up with rent, food, baby things, her job, childcare, raising a baby, and all of her other bills. She was drowning and she couldn't see the light. So, she did was she thought was best for her daughter and brought her to her father. She hadn't been sure if Bruce Wayne would even want children, and she had heard and read many not-so-great stories about the man so she had hesitated even letting him know that he has a daughter. Well, that and considering that they live on different continents and she had no idea how to contact him. She ended up pulling together just enough money for a round ticket to the States and back and she brought the baby straight to Bruce Wayne himself. Obviously, she was far too young to remember herself but Grandpa Alfred has told her many stories from when she was little. Apparently, Bruce Wayne finding out he is the father to a two-year-old little girl was amusing. He had shut down at first, almost scared of her, before flying into overprotective mode. Her mom told Bruce that until she's in a steady place she doesn't want to be in her daughter's life other than calls and letters. She was too ashamed and she wanted to better herself before being part of her child's life. She wouldn't see her mom in person again until she after she turned eight, but by then it was practically the first time for her. Thankfully her dad kept up with her Japanese otherwise she would've had a very hard time when visiting her mom.
News of her existence spread quickly, no matter how much her dad tried to keep her hidden. He wasn't ashamed of her or anything, he just wanted to keep her safe. She quickly became Gotham's sweetheart, winning the hearts of Gotham with her cuteness. The Wayne family has always been a center of attention in Gotham, and the fact that Bruce wasn't the last Wayne anymore blew through Gotham. However, it wasn't just good attention that she caught and Kagome became very familiar with being kidnapped. Though she always got back to her family so they became more like an inconvenience more than anything.
Only a year after her dad got custody of her Dick is welcomed into the family, the first of her many siblings. A couple of years later she gets her first pseudo-sister. Barbara doesn't get adopted into the family but she's basically thought of as a family. She was seven when Jason joins the family, and still to this day he is her favorite sibling. They just clicked like nobody else in her family. When she turns eight her mom gets back into full contact with them, telling them she's finally in a stable place in her life with a husband and a two-year-old son. Sota is sibling number three, he's a little brat but she loves him anyway. After that, she gets to spend one weekend a month, school breaks, and most of the summer in Japan with her mom. An arrangement she very much enjoyed.
She's eleven when brother number four enters her life. Tim and herself are the same age down to the day and even though they look nothing alike they like to joke that they are the twins of the family. When she's thirteen her stepdad dies in an accident leaving her mom a single mother once again. Thankfully, her husband's dad eagerly allows them to stay at the shrine. Stepdad's family is much better than her mom's original family. Steph is her second pseudo-sister, and the joke of twins turned into triplets even though Steph doesn't share the same birthday as the other two. Three people who couldn't look more different, personalities further apart, one not even officially part of the family (yet, she and Cass are getting pretty close lately), but triplets nonetheless. The next year Cass gets adopted into the family, her first and only official sister. She only gets to spend a few months with her until Kagome's life gets turned upside down. Though they do become very close in that time.
She spends her fifteenth birthday in Japan, on a summer visit with her mom. The day that forever changes her life. She gets pulled down the well and 500 years into the past. By some miracle her mom doesn't contact her dad the few days she was in the past for the first time, so she got to keep it a secret from her dad. Honestly, her mom was probably way too panicked to actually think about contacting someone who was thousands of miles away. Since her mom has been in the know since the beginning, she helped convince her dad that she wanted to finish up her high school career in Japan. Something that was not easy to do mind you, Dad was very worried about having her out of his sight. Mom also helped her come up with many excuses throughout the years on why she couldn't come home a single time since she turned 15. With how stupidly rich her dad is, and the fact that he has more than one private plane she still gets to see her family a good bit. For the first couple of years, she managed to keep a rather decent schedule of when she'd be back home and she planned her dad's visits around those times. It worked out pretty well all things considered. There had been a few times that her dad got suspicious when he'd come for a surprise visit and she'd be completely unavailable. But they managed to talk themselves around the issue, something that she was very proud of.
After she turns sixteen, she learns of the existence of her second half-brother. Damian was a bit of a feral child, but she absolutely adores him. He's their youngest sibling, a year younger than Sota. She totally gloats over the fact that Damian openly announces that she's his favorite, well in his own way. Mostly in his words is that she is actually his only sibling and the rest are just invaders. She's a bit disappointed that she doesn't get the chance to live in the Manor with him, to be able to give him hugs and cuddles whenever she wants to, but she has other priorities unfortunately. Jason's stories about her siblings when she's gone are very entertaining and keeps her satisfied until she gets the chance of her own. Damian does come to visit her every time anyone comes to visit so she'll take the win when she can. Her dad has even decided to start settling down with someone. He's dated her on and off for years, and honestly, she's her favorite girlfriend of all the ones he's had. Selina is great, and she couldn't be happier for her dad. Her last brother she got less than a year ago. Due to conflicting schedules, they haven't gotten the chance to meet in person yet. But they've face timed a few times and any chance she gets the opportunity to visit the sibling chat she gets to see what he's like. He seems like a really nice guy who is really down to earth. How he ended up with her chaotic family she has no idea.
After she graduated from high school, a straight B student to her absolute pride, she gave the excuse of wanting to travel around away from technology for a while. Not a complete lie on her part. So that way she could start traveling in the feudal era for longer stretches of time.
That is just the civilian side of her family though. She found out about her dad's caped secret when she was ten, during the last year of Jason being Robin. The news that the Joker killed her brother nearly broke her, adding to the fact that at the time nobody knew she knew made it worse. The excuses they gave her made her blood boil. After she learned the secret, she figured that her dad didn't want her to know so she pretended she didn't. It didn't take Alfred too long to realize that she knew and she had cried into his chest for what seemed like hours for her dead brother. She convinced her grandpa to not tell anybody that she knew, she wanted her family to tell her on their own. He agreed with her. The rage she felt when her father let somebody new go out with him after what happened with Jason was heavy, though she didn't take that rage out on Tim. It wasn't like she could let them know why she was angry because she didn't know their secret so there was no reason for her to be angry. She cooled down after a while when she saw how much Tim was calming down her angry and grieving dad. She was, however, the first person to know about Jason's miraculous revival. He contacted her himself and she kept his secret tightly locked away. He had learned how badly she was taking his death and couldn't keep her in the dark anymore, he had never wanted to keep her out of the secret from the beginning. Simply happy to know her brother is alive, mostly well, and to be his rock. She helped him through many a breakdown when he first came back. While she wasn't the biggest fan of his early actions, namely the duffle bag full of heads, she never judged him or was scared of him. Jason is her big brother, her favorite brother, she will always be on his side. In turn for his secret, she told him that she knew about everything. He was also the first one she told about her feudal adventures, quickly followed by Grandpa Alfred. They both helped her keep her secret from Dad and the rest of the family. They hid her absences from school, on the condition that she kept her grades above a D level. Something that Inuyasha made very hard to do. They also teamed up with her mom to help coordinate excuses on why she couldn't come home or wasn't around if they did a surprise drop-in when she was in the past.
Jason took great joy in telling her the secret identity of every member of the caped community that he knows of. Which is a lot for both the good side and the bad side. Good thing she's so good at keeping secrets. Like the fact her dad's soon-to-be fiancé is Catwoman. Kind of ironic that her dad chose to date one of his rouges. As much as she wants to meet her newest brother, so far, she's glad that she hasn't because his Meta ability would have SO given her away.
Weirdly enough there are people outside of her family that know that she knows when not even everyone in her family knows. The one and only Harley Quinn found out that she knew when she was thirteen. Thankfully this was after she stopped dating the Joker and started dating Ivy. Harley regularly started "kidnapping" her for 'girl's night' which was both fun and annoying at times. Why Harley kept publicly kidnapping her, somebody who supposedly knows nothing about the caped community, she's not sure but she got to spend a good amount of time with the Birds of Prey. Watching Catwoman try to hide her surprise the first time she was at one of the get-togethers was very entertaining. Maybe Harley's psychiatrist background was the reason she was able to figure out that she knew, but who knows since Harley won't tell. Harley also knows about her feudal adventures, which had been an accident. To say that she was surprised to see the mostly reformed Gotham rouge on her family's shrine after climbing out of the well is an understatement. The whole situation was surreal. Apparently, she tracked her down in Japan to check on her since she hadn't been able to kidnap her for a girl's night in so long and she had been worried. After that, she became Aunt Harley with a side of therapist. Honestly, it was nice to talk to somebody about all of the horrific things she sees, experiences, and has to do in the feudal era. She was also the one to help her see that Inuyasha was absolutely no good for her and helped give her the final push to leave the group.
Damian actually figured it out pretty quickly, but that doesn't actually surprise her with how intensely he pays attention to her. It's clear to her that he wants to learn all he can about his blood sister, so she really doesn't mind. It was with his involvement in knowing that started the betting pool on who would figure out she knows about their night lives when or how. It started off as a joke when Damian had scoffed, "How is it possible that Father hasn't figured out that you know in seven years?" The answer basically boils down to that dad doesn't want her to know so he'll keep thinking that she doesn't as long as she keeps pretending she doesn't. Honestly, she had been a bit hurt and betrayed that he hadn't told her at first. Why wouldn't he trust her with their family's secret? Grandpa Alfred had sat her down and explained it to her. Dad constantly feels guilty having her be the only one in the family not in the know (to his knowledge) but he doesn't want to take the risk of her finding out and wanting to join them. Which no thank you, she was happy being a civilian. While he was guilty for not telling her but it was overpowered by the thought of keeping her safe. So, she played her part of oblivious, roll with the flow, heiress. How he never questioned why she never questioned all of the fighting, especially with weapons, and other (vigilante-centric) hobbies that her siblings were adamant she learned throughout the years she'll probably never know. Anyway, Jason had joked "What do you think it'll take for the old man to finally realize you know?" She had smirked back at him, "Twenty bucks he'll never admit that I know unless I tell him to his face." The feral grin that took over her brother's face dawned the birth of the betting pool. To keep it fair and honest Grandpa Alfred keeps tabs on all the active bets.
There are two other people that know that she knows, Cass and Roy. Nobody knows when Cass found out, her sister is scary like that. Roy found out because she's sometimes an idiot and she called Jason when he was over at Roy's house and she was loud enough for him to hear before Jason could quiet her down. So, overall, there are only six people who know that she knows and nine people who know about her feudal adventures. Her mom, Grandpa, and Sota make the extra three, though they have no idea about her dad's family secret.
Honestly, she's actually become proud of the fact that she's been able to keep this a secret from so many people. Her dad, the world's greatest detective. Dick, who is so attentive to all of his siblings. Barbara, who is scary good as Oracle. Tim, who is arguably just as good if not better than her dad at figuring stuff out. Steph, who needs to know everything about everyone. And Duke, who she hasn't met yet but would know instantly that she's not a normal girl anymore with his Meta ability.
So… yeah. That pretty much leads her to now. Completely screwed. Her dad and his super friends are lying unconscious in front of her, in feudal Japan. She has to hold in a groan. All of her intense secret keeping out the window because fate has decided to fuck her over. Again. Why is this happening? Truly, who has she pissed off that decided to ruin her life? She really wants to know, because this is bullshit. She's spent the last four years doing her best to keep this secret, and succeeded mind you, only for all of her hard work to be washed down the drain by chance. Her dad is going to find out that she's been doing even more dangerous stuff than himself for four years. He's going to be mad, worried, guilty, and probably betrayed. She idly wonders how long she'll be able to keep the fact that she knows it's him underneath that bat mask now that they'll be traveling together for a while. While Batman has saved her plenty of times, though he never sticks around very long. Most likely to avoid screwing up around her.
The thought of simply walking away crosses her mind for a second before she dismisses it. She can't do that to them. She knows firsthand how disconcerting it is to find yourself suddenly in feudal Japan. She can't let them fend for themselves, not if she can help them. They'd probably be able to handle it better than she did, but they'd still have a hard time and no idea on how to get home. Plus, the future needs these people to be back in the future as soon as possible. And the last thing she needs is for one of these people to make an enemy of some random demon and get themselves killed. Or worse, gain the attention of Naraku and suddenly she has to fight against members of the Justice League. Yeah, no thanks. She has enough on her plate already thank you very much. She doesn't need to find a way to fight Superman, she doesn't have access to kryptonite. So, no she needs to stay here until they wake up and help them get back to the future. In turn, completely blowing her cover with her dad. Which super sucks, but it's not the end of the world. Hopefully. Fingers crossed.
"Mama? Are you okay?" Shippo asks worriedly. She's been acting super stressed and worried since she saw who is in the mystery barrier. He's a little worried about her.
"I'm fine, Baby. Just thinking." She answers, running her fingers through his hair.
"About what?"
Kagome chuckles lightly, not wanting to burden her son with her problems. Oh yeah, she'll also have to let her dad know that he's a grandpa now that'll be fun, "Lots of things. But mostly getting these people back to the future as quickly and problem free as possible."
Shippo easily recognizes the non-answer but lets it go. If his Mama doesn't want to tell him there is probably a good reason for it. So, he decides to ask one of his other questions, "What was that rope you threw away?"
At the question Kagome's eyes are drawn back to the innocent-looking lasso on the ground, "That is Wonder Woman's lasso of truth. Anybody ensnared by it is compelled to tell the truth." She answers him, though it does remind her that she heard other things got thrown around when the barrier broke. Kagome looks around and brief irritation fills her. Various equipment from the Justice League members are scattered about, some quite a fair distance. Well, first step is to clean up after these people. They'll need to collect their gear so that when they finally wake up they can grab their stuff and get moving. This isn't a safe place to set up camp for the night. They'd be attacked for sure.
She lets out a sigh, "Do you want to help me gather all of the gear that got scattered?" she asks Shippo. With his enhanced senses, he'll probably have an easier time finding everything.
Shippo lights up at the prospect of being able to help, "Sure!" he chirps before racing off to the first object he sees. Which happens to be Hawkgirl's mace. He grunts in surprise at how heavy it is, "Where should I put them?"
Kagome glances around and spots a downed tree, that was probably a victim of a demon spat, that will be a good spot to sit and wait until they wake up. Which, hopefully, won't be too long, "We'll make a pile over there, thanks for helping Shippo."
Shippo beams at her, "No problem, Mama." He says happily as he drags the heavy mace across the ground to the area she pointed out.
She smiles at her son before bending down to pick up the lasso and the collapsible bo-staff that she notices a few feet away. They spend the next few minutes collecting all of the equipment they can find. She puts Wonder Woman's shield on the pile and glances around, not seeing anything else. Something is bothering her though. They haven't found a bow, and Green Arrow doesn't have one on him. They've found his quiver and a few loose arrows that escaped it. But no bow.
"Baby, do you see a bow anywhere? I think it's the last thing we're missing."
Shippo hums thoughtfully as he looks around with his enhanced eyesight. He's about to say no when he happens to look up and sees the light reflecting off of something near the top of a tree. He points up at it, "There is something up there, I can't tell what it is though. Do you want me to check?"
"Yes, please. You're a good climber but be careful. Safety over speed. Please don't fall."
"I won't Mama. Be back soon." He dashes off, quickly disappearing into the tall grass, to climb a very tall tree.
Kagome huffs out a laugh and decides to sit down. It's been a very long day and she is already mentally exhausted. What she would give not to have to talk to the founding members of the Justice League (and her dad) and explain to them that they are 500 years out of place. And the reason she's also 500 years out of place.
It doesn't take her much longer to hear the first sounds of someone waking up. She glances around at the nine figures to see who she'd be dealing with first. Slight movement and a groan catch her attention and her head darts to Martian Manhunter. All in all, not the worst first person to deal with. Honestly, she's just glad it's not her dad… or Hawkgirl. She's heard the Thanagarian can be very impulsive and hot-headed. Kagome decides to let the Martian wake up in his own time and stay sitting where she is. It's probably the best place to be to look as unthreatening as possible. The last thing she needs at the moment is the Justice League thinking she's an enemy until her dad wakes up. So, she'll just stay where she is and patiently wait for the man to wake up. Less than a minute later she has to hide a flinch when the man goes from laying on the ground to floating mid-air in a matter of seconds. She does her best to stay calm and exude friendliness as the man's otherworldly gaze locks onto her.
J'onn wakes up slowly and confusion fills him as he doesn't remember going to sleep. That usually means that he has been attacked and knocked out by enemies of some kind. The moment that thought passes through his mind he goes from blearily waking up to battle ready. Within seconds he goes from lying down (on the ground outside for some reason) to floating in mid-air. He takes in his surrounding as quickly yet thoroughly as possible. He quickly takes in that he is not alone. Eight of his friends and teammates are still unconscious around him. The thought of having to protect them until they wake bubbles to the front of his mind. He will not fail his friends. The last thing he remembers is they had been in a meeting in the Watchtower. Now, however, they appear to be in the middle of a forest. A very quiet forest, usually he can sense the minds of the citizens of towns that lay just outside of most forests. He may not read the minds of people without their permission, or in extreme situations, but he can always sense them within his radar. Not this one. Besides the usual sounds of animal life and only a few human sounds filter through his system. This forest must be very far from civilization.
One mind registers much closer than he would appreciate in this situation. He spins around mid-air to face the unfamiliar human girl. At first glance, she doesn't seem malicious, but it pays to be wary. There is a young human girl sitting on a fallen tree. From his estimates, she looks to be in her late teens to early twenties. She looks to be of Japanese descent. Long raven black hair falls to mid-back and she's staring at him with bright blue eyes. While she does not seem currently hostile, she is armed. Her clothing does not seem immediately protective, but he could say the same about Diana's uniform and he knows for a fact it's bulletproof. It seems like very traditional Japanese wear, are they in Japan? If what he remembers from his research into Earth's history, she seems to be dressed as a priestess. Only more custom from what has become the normal of red bottoms and a long-sleeved white top. Her outfit consists of dark blue hakama with white stitching of a crescent moon along the waist. Her top is a grey short-sleeved style yukata top, a blue crescent moon stitched over by her right shoulder. A thick black belt sits between the two articles of clothing, but it doesn't cover any of the crescent moons of the pant's waist. A rather large yellow backpack is set on the ground next to her. Her weapons consist of a red long bow strapped to her back along with a quiver. A bo-staff is also strapped in line with her bow. He can also see a sheathed weapon connected to her belt sitting at the small of her back.
"Are you all right?" the girl's voice breaks him out of his observations of the girl.
"Who are you?" he asks instead.
"Ah, right. Sorry. My name is Kagome Wayne. I found you all here, oh and your gear was all scattered so I gathered it all up and put it in a pile here. You'll have to let me know if you're still missing something."
J'onn keeps his face passive in his surprise and resists the urge to look down at Batman, "Wayne? As in…"
The girl, Kagome laughs lightly, "Yes, as in daughter of Bruce Wayne. Figures that my dad is so famous that the Justice League would know who I am. I guess he is one of your biggest benefactors." She pins him with a look, "But back to my question, are you okay?"
"I feel fine. Where are we? Was there anybody else around when you found us?" Martian Manhunter asks.
Kagome bites her lip, contemplating what she wants to do. She's going to have to let them know where or when they are, but how to break the news? She lets out a shaky sigh, "Martian Manhunter, you can read minds, correct? To make sure that someone is one hundred percent telling the truth?"
"I can, why is that question relevant to my own?"
"I would like you to enter my mind to give you my answer so that I can convince you that I am telling the truth. What I am about to tell may seem far-fetched even for the Justice League and I'd like to convince you that I am telling the truth so you can help me explain it to the rest of them. Once everyone is awake, I'd like to get moving to a safer location before we lose what is left of the light. The sun is going to start setting soon and I prefer not to travel during dark if I don't have to. Please."
It is not very often that anybody from Earth wants him to enter their minds, most get upset at the very idea of him being able to read their minds, much less enter them more fully. He is fully aware that Bruce's daughter is unaware of her father's nightly activities, so why would she be so adamant that he needs to read her mind to believe whatever situation they are in? Why would she be involved in something that would be so unbelievable?
"Are you sure? I have been told many times that entering one's mind is invasive and shouldn't be done." The last thing he wants to do is upset The Batman's daughter.
Kagome gives him a soft look; she's dealt with enough demons facing prejudice for things beyond their control. How they look, their species, their abilities, etc. She once met a tribe of mole youkai that could only communicate telepathically, they got a lot of bad rep too.
"Your natural abilities do not scare me one bit. I've heard through the grapevine that Martians talked to each other telepathically, is that right? If so, I don't mind at all if that is how you'd like to talk with me normally. But I'm asking again, please read my mind so you'll believe me immediately."
J'onn lets himself do a very base reading of her and all he senses is honesty. She truly does not mind if he breaches her mind and she trusts him not to do anything untoward while within. He has heard stories of Bruce's one child not involved with superheroes throughout the years, both from Bruce himself and the many Batkids. He has heard about her good heart and her willingness and openness to new or different things. Bruce would complain all of the time about how she'd get kidnapped most out of all of his children, but she'd end up trying to make friends with the people that grabbed her. Oliver would joke back that most of the time the kid was successful. So, while he's heard many good things about the girl, he had never thought that she'd be so open about something like this.
"You're sure you don't mind?" he mentally asks, testing the waters. There are times when people would say they don't mind but the moment he starts they hate the feeling of it and tell him to stop.
Kagome is not one of those people. She beams happily at him, "Not at all."
