Episode 71: From Ghost to Ghost
Mew and her friends are at the Pokemon Center, preparing for her next gym battle against Morty, the Gym Leader specializing in Ghost Type Pokemon. After yesterday's fiasco, Morty proves to be a strong trainer, and Mew will be facing an unbeatable adversary..
She holds her Pokedex and Dexter says Gengar, the Shadow Pokémon. The evolved form of Haunter. A Ghost and Poison Type. Details about Gengar are unknown."
"That doesn't help very much," Misty says.
And Brock says, "But at least you know that Morty's gonna use ghost Pokémon against you both. And that gives you both a chance to plan your strategy."
"You're right, but Morty is going to be one opponent to beat," Mew says.
Soon, Nurse Joy comes in with her Pokemon, "Good news, Mew. All your Pokémon are in excellent condition."
Pikachu and Eevee jump on to Mew's shoulders
"Great! Thanks a lot, Nurse Joy," Mew says.
Then Nurse Joy notices, "You seem tense."
"Yeah, I've had lots of gym battles before, but never against any ghost Pokémon. And I'm not exactly sure what to do," Misty says.
And Misty says, "The gym leader has a Gengar that's really powerful."
"Most of the trainers who challenge him do have a difficult time against his ghost Pokémon, but you've got a Noctowl. That's your secret weapon," Nurse Joy says.
"Secret weapon?" Mew questions, and remembers Noctowl's attack that can reveal Gastly's illusion.
And Brock says, "I think Nurse Joy's right, Mew. Noctowl might be the key to winning your next gym badge."
Mew brings out her Pokeball, "I hope so, Brock. I hope so."
Later, at the gym, Gengar is facing down multiple Gastly.
Morty calls out, "Gengar, use Confuse Ray!"
Gengar does so, hitting all the Gastly at once and amazing all the students.
Morty turns to the students, "Ghost Pokemon may not have the pure physical strength of some other Pokémon types, but by using their abilities wisely, the opponents become confused and fearful, and that can be a much more powerful and useful weapon than brute force. For example, that last Confuse Ray could…"
But soon, someone calls out, "Uh, excuse me, sir. A trainer has arrived to challenge you."
Morty turns to see the employee with Mew and her friends.
"Good morning, Morty," Mew says with a smile.
"Hello, Mew I've been expecting you," Morty says.
"Great," Mew says.
"We could come back," Misty says.
And Brock says, "Maybe, we're interrupting something." as the Gastly gather behind Morty.
"Oh, I was just lecturing my students about the ghost Pokémon. Teaching's another part of a gym leader's job," Morty says, then turns to the Gastly, "Thanks for helping out, guys. I think that's all for now."
The Gastly disappear.
Then Morty turns to Gastly, "Gengar, you should take a little break, too." and calls it back to it Pokeball.
Morty says, "Class, this is Mew from Pallet Town and they'll each be challenging our gym today. I'd like to allow them to observe our battles, Mew."
The student bow and asks, "Please, Ms. Mew."
"Well, Mew?" Morty questions.
Mew smiles, "Sure, Morty. I don't mind at all. They can stay."
Pikachu and Eevee agree.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket flies near the Bell Tower with James pointing his treasure detector towards the ground.
"Look, Meowth! My treasure detector is working again!" James asks.
It woiked before?" Meowth asks.
"Luckily, it was blasted away along with us, and the closer we get to Ecruteak, the more treasure it senses!" James says.
But Jessie says, "I wish you'd come to your senses, James. The only thing that contraption does is detect junk.
"On the contrary, Jessie, it's a miracle!" James says, and shows his bottle cap collection book, "Without this, I'd have to swindle dozens of young collectors to get jewels like these!
"Wobb-uffet!" (Impressive!) Wobbuffet says.
Then Meowth asks, "Explain to me what's the big deal about a bunch of bottle caps?"
"Wobbuffet. (Tell me, too.) Wobbuffet says.
And James says, "If you had any sense of history, no explanation would be necessary."
"Wobb-uffet." (So, tell us.) Wobbuffet says.
Jessie scolds Wobbuffet, "Quiet or you'll be history!"
Suddenly, the machine goes off, and James notices, Hey! Look! It's going crazy!"
Jessie, Meowth and Wobbuffet look down at the Bell Tower and the Burned Tower.
"Dat's where we was, at dem towers," Meowth says.
And James says in excitement, "The treasure detector's never wrong, there must be something valuable still down there!"
"It may not seem possible, but there's a remote chance you may be right about that, James. Perhaps we should investigate further," Jessie says.
"Wobb-uffet." (I guess.) Wobbuffet says.
And Jessie shoves Wobbuffet away, "Yes, that's very nice, go lean over the side."
"Let's get down dere, shall we?" Meowth replies
Inside the gym, Mew and Morty are set to have their battle. Meanwhile, outside, Team Rocket has landed and are on their treasure hunt and pass by the gym.
James turns his head to notice, "Hey! Look in there!"
They soon spot Mew with Pikachu and Eevee.
"It's the twerp!" James says.
"Pikachu and Eevee, too," Jessie says
"They must be here to have their gym battle," Meowth says.
Then James says, "Hey! Maybe we'll get three treasures today!" and walks away.
"Maybe," Jessie and James reply.
"Wobbuffet!" (It's likely!) Wobbuffet pops up, causing Jessie and Meowth to stumble back.
Unknown to Team Rocket, something peeks from the side of the gym. It's a quadrupedal canine Pokémon whose body is covered in long, shaggy pale gray hair that reaches down to its legs. Its large snout peeks under the hair covering most of its head, and contains a black triangular nose and a wide, jagged mouth powerful enough to shatter bones.[1] Rather than having actual teeth, Greavard instead has serrated lips. It has stubby limbs and large round feet, and it has a slight waddle to its walk. Its rear has a thin wispy tail. On the top of its head is a protrusion resembling a candle, which burns with a small purplish-yellow light.
It looks curious to see the three.
Meanwhile, back in the gym.
The referee announces, "This is an official Ecruteak City gym match! The challenger is battling for a Fog Badge! The gym leader, and the challenger, will use three Pokemon each and the match ends when all three Pokemon of either opponent are unable to continue battling! The challenger will attack first! The challenger will be permitted to make substitutions during the match! The gym leader will not!
Morty calls out, "Are you ready, Mew?"
"Yes!" Mew answers
And the referee announces "Let the match begin!"
Morty throws his Pokeball and calls out, "Gastly!"
And Gastly comes out of the Pokeball.
"I gotta start strong," Mew says and throws her Pokeball, "Noctowl, go!"
Mew and her friends look concerned and surprised that Mew picks Noctowl first as the Pokemon comes out of the Pokeball.
Brock asks, "Why are you starting with Noctowl?"
Misty calls out, "Noctowl's your secret weapon, Mew. If it gets knocked out of the match early on, you won't have a chance if Morty uses Gengar."
"Don't worry, I actually have a plan," Mew says.
Then turns to her Pokemon, "Are you ready, Noctowl?"
Noctowl agrees.
Then Mew calls out the first attack, "Go, Hypnosis attack!"
Noctowl launches the attack.
Morty calls out, "Dodge it, Gastly!"
Gastly does so by disappearing, shocking Pikachu and Eevee.
"It disappeared," Misty says.
Then Morty calls out, "Gastly, Confusion!"
Gastly reappears, prompting Noctowl to fly towards it, but Gastly disappears again and reappears right behind Noctowl. Noctowl looks back and sees Gastly, but it disappears as Noctowl tries to attack again.
"Noctowl, just take it easy!" Mew calls out.
That Gastly's amazingly fast!" Brock says.
Noctowl attacks over and over as Gastly reappears and disappears.
Mew calls out, "You can find it, Noctowl! Just use your Foresight!"
Right on cue, Noctowl finds Gastly easily with the attack.
"It spotted the Gastly!" Misty says.
And Brock says, "Now that Noctowl's Foresight worked, its physical attacks can work, too!"
"Good job, Noctowl!" Mew calls out, "Now, Tackle it!"
Noctowl closes in, but Gastly dodges with ease.
"Just because physical attacks can work, doesn't mean they will work," Morty says.
And Mew calls out, "Don't stop, Noctowl! Tackle attack Gastly!"
Noctowl zooms in, but Gastly dodges over and over.
Brock calls out, "Mew, Gastly's just too fast! Noctowl's gotta stop it!"
"Noctowl, use your Hypnosis to stop Gastly!" Mew calls out.
Noctowl does so.
"Gastly, don't look!" Morty calls out.
Gastly shuts its eyes.
Morty calls out, "Use your Lick attack!"
Gastly soon goes under Noctowl and gets right behind it.
Mew calls out, "Get away from it, Noctowl!"
Noctowl gains altitude, but Gastly's tongue manages to smack Noctowl from behind.
"Noctowl, return!" Mew calls out and returns him to the Pokeball.
"Thanks, Noctowl, you did what I needed you to," Mew says.
Misty says, "He's changing Pokemon!"
Yeah, good strategy," Brock says. "Mew needed Noctowl's Foresight so he could keep Gastly in view, but he's gonna switch Pokemon now so he can use Noctowl later if he has to.
As Brock talks, Jessie and Meowth watch.
"This is a lot more interesting than digging," Jessie says.
"James is missing a very interesting match here," Meowth says.
Then James calls out, "James: Jessie! Meowth! I found something!"
"Will you shut your mouth?!" Jessie shouts as she and Meowth covers James' mouth.
And Meowth says, "Pipe down, you lame brain, or you'll get us caught!"
"My detector was right, there's treasure up in that room there!" James says, and points towards a small building near the gym.
Meanwhile, back inside.
"Foresight's still working! We can still see that Gastly!" Mew says, and turns to Pikachu, "Ready to battle, Pikachu?"
"Pika! ("Sure am!) Pikachu says, and runs into the battlefield.
"Interesting," Morty says.
Then Mew calls out, "Pikachu, use your Quick Attack!
Pikachu charges in and nails Gastly, amazing the students as it slides to a stop.
"It worked!" Misty says.
But Misty realizes she spoke too soon as Gastly gets back up. Pikachu and Mew seem determined.
"Seems close, but not close enough," Mew says.
Then Morty says, "You raised your Pikachu very well, Mew. But my Gastly has been raised well, too."
"I have to agree, but we're just getting started," Mew says.
And calls out, "Okay, Pikachu, Thunderbolt attack!"
Pikachu uses Thunderbolt.
"Gastly, dodge it! "Morty calls out.
Gastly does so and closes the gap between it and Pikachu.
"Night Shade! Morty says.
But Mew quickly calls out, "Pikachu, use your tail!"
Pikachu uses his tail as Gastly uses Night Shade, and barely misses.
"Now Pikachu, use Iron Tail!" Mew calls out.
And Morty calls out, "Gastly, use Night Shade again!"
Gastly uses Night Shade as Pikachu uses Iron Tail. Both attacks collide and cause an explosion, causing both to be pushed back and fall to the ground.
Morty calls out, "Gastly!"
"Pikachu!" Mew calls out.
Soon, it's revealed that both Pokemon are knocked down and out.
The referee announces, "Both Pokemon are unable to battle. It's a draw.
Mew picks up Pikachu, "Pikachu, are you okay?"
Still dizzy, Pikachu slowly nods.
Morty smiles and calls back to the Pokeball, "You've deserved a good rest Gastly."
Mew gives Pikachu a good rest next to Eevee, "Nice job. You were great. You deserve a good rest, now, buddy."
Mew then joins back into the battle.
"Not bad Mew," Morty says.
"Yeah. Not back yourself, but I don't plan on losing," Mew says, and brings out her Pokeball.
Mew throws her Pokeball and calls out, "I choose you, Cyndaquil!"
And Cynadquill comes out of the Pokeball.
"Cyndaquil?" Misty questions.
"Cyndaquil can be pretty tough, and Mew knows what to do. However, the next Pokemon Morty might bring out won't be easy," Brock says.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket is still on their treasure hunt and finds ancient antiques.
"Hey! This stuff DOES seem valuable!" Jessie says.
James says with confidence, "See? I told you my treasure detector works."
And Meowth says, "But Pikachu's right next door, guys. Shouldn't we be trying to swipe it from the twoip?"
"We can't afford to tangle with them. We're broke. We need to find something of value so we can support ourselves," Jessie says.
Then James pulls out an ancient coin charm that looks like Meowth's charm, "Well, Meowth, looks like today is pay day!"
Meowth enamored, "Forget about Pikachu! I want that charm! Look, there's a whole bunch! Which one should I take?!"
As Meowth talks, multiple Gastly surround the threesome.
"Why think small?" James questions.
And James says, "We'll take as many as we can carry!"
The Gastly soon make themselves known to the greedy three and their eyes glow red as Team Rocket panics.
Meanwhile, the candle top dog Pokemon from before looks through the open window to see the gym battle is taking place.
Morty then throws his Pokeball, "I choose you! Haunter!"
And Haunter comes out of the Pokeball.
"Not another ghost type!" Misty says, shocked.
"Well Morty is a Ghost Type Pokemon expert," Tomo says.
"Yeah. And if Mew defeats Haunter, we might see Gengar," Jen says.
Molly nods.
Suddenly, Molly feels something brush against her shoulder, and turns to see the little dog like Pokemon.
"Hello," Molly says, and pets the dog Pokemon, "You're a cute little puppy."
Mew calls out, "Cyndaquil, Flamethrower attack!"
The attack launches, but Haunter quickly disappears to avoid it and reappears soon after.
"Wow! Haunter's faster than Gastly!" Brock says.
Morty calls out, "Alright, Mean Look, Haunter!"
Haunter then uses the attack and takes effect, putting out Cyndaquil's back flames.
"Uh oh," Mew says.
"What's a Mean Look do?" Tomo asks.
Brock turns to Tomo and the others, "It forces you to stick with Cyndaquil now. It can't return to its Pokéball till the round is over!"
"Huh?" Jen reacts in shock.
Misty shouts, "No fair! The challenger's allowed to substitute Pokemon, the referee said so!"
"Mean Look is an official Pokemon League sanctioned attack, Misty," Mew says, "It's perfectly fair to use in a gym match."
"It is? Really?" Misty asks.
"It's part of Morty's strategy. Before awarding a badge, a gym leader tests how a challenger reacts to surprises like this," Brock says.
"This isn't going to stop me!" Mew says, and calls out, "Cyndaquil, fire up and use your Swift attack!"
Cyndaquil's back flames reignite and the attack is launched, nailing Haunter.
"Nice, Cyndaquil!" Mew says.
Morty calls out, "Haunter, use your Hypnosis!"
Haunter does so, confusing Cyndaquil.
Mew calls out, "Don't let it fool ya, Cyndaquil! Smokescreen!"
Cyndaquil launches the attack, prompting Haunter to disappear and reappear above the smoke.
"That broke its Hypnosis!" Misty says.
And Morty calls out, "Haunter, reach down and pull Cyndaquil out of that Smokescreen!"
Haunter manages to do so.
"Now use your Lick attack!" Morty calls out.
Haunter licks Cyndaquil, paralyzing it.
"Cyndaquil!" Mew calls out.
Then Morty says, "You can let go now, Haunter."
Haunter tosses Cyndaquil down, while the impact knocks it out.
Referee announces, "Cyndaquil is unable to battle! Haunter wins the round!"
Mew then calls back Cyndaquil, and says, "You did your best Cyndaquill."
"This looks bad," Misty says.
"I knew Haunter would be tough to beat, but not this tough! Mew doesn't have much choice, now!" Brock says.
"Mew has to go with Noctowl," Misty adds.
"Don't worry, guys. This isn't over yet," Mew says, and calls out her last Pokemon, "Noctowl, I choose you!"
And lets him out of the Pokeball.
Just them, Morty says, "If you lose this next battle, Mew, the match is over. Do you think you have a chance using a Noctowl that's already been rescued?"
"We won't know until we try, will we?" Mew says, "Come on, Noctowl, let's show Morty and his whole class what a come-from-behind win looks like!"
Noctowl agrees, and takes to the sky while Pikachu, Eevee, and the other Pokemon cheer.
Then Morty says, "You're very confident, Mew. But you're going to need more than confidence to defeat Haunter."
"We have more!" Mew calls out, "Let's show em, Noctowl!"
Meanwhile, back with Team Rocket.
Jessie sighs, "All my favorite sushi."
James sighs, "Banquets every day."
Meowth also sighs, "Cat food that don't taste like a cat."
As Team Rocket laughs gleefully, it's revealed that the Gastly are causing them to hallucinate a feast.
Jessie notices, "Look. It's a feast for the eyes!"
"Oh yeah," James happily says.
And Meowth says with a smile, "And for the stomach, too."
"Let's eat!" Team Rockrt cheers.
They rush for the table and the feast, but it moves away from them.
"Hey! Why's it running away? Come back!" Jessie cries out.
"At least slow down," Meowth calls out.
Jessie calls out, "Please wait."
Yes, it isn't polite to eat and run," James calls out.
It certainly is fast food!" Jessie calls out.
As they continue to hallucinate, the Gastly just watch and laugh.
Back inside the gym, Noctowl chases Haunter, but disappears.
Mew calls out, "Noctowl, Foresight!"
Haunter is quickly found.
Then Mew calls out, "Now use your Tackle attack!"
"Use your hands, Haunter!" Morty calls out.
Haunter's ghostly hands dart at Noctowl, but Noctowl dodges them both multiple times.
"Noctowl's a little faster than Cyndaquil," Morty comments.
Then Haunter calls out, "Haunter, use your Lick attack, now!"
Haunter lashes out its tongue.
Mew calls out, "Fly up and dodge it!"
Noctowl heads upward, dodging the oncoming tongue and hands.
That was close," Misty says.
And Brock says, "Mew has to do something to stop those Lick attacks!"
Mew calls out, "Noctowl, Hypnosis!"
Use Confuse Ray!" Morty calls out.
Both attacks fire and collide, but Noctowl's attack is overpowered and is forced to the ground.
Noctowl! Are you okay?" Mew calls out.
Noctowl gets up, but has no idea what's going on.
Brock calls out, "Mew, it looks like Haunter's Confuse Ray worked!
"Well, Mew, are you ready to give up yet?" Morty asks.
Mew calls out to her Pokemon, "Noctowl, can you keep going?"
Noctowl tries to shake out the cobwebs and gets back up.
"Alright, let's try," Mew says, and Noctowl takes off.
Morty says, "I respect your fighting spirit, but this battle is over! Night Shade!"
Haunter charges in for the attack.
Mew calls out, "Tackle attack!"
Noctowl closes in and manages to hit Haunter, causing an explosion. Both trainers worry, but then Noctowl flies upwards to reveal that it got out unscathed.
"Taking that Night Shade attack at close range canceled the Confuse Ray's effects!" Morty says.
Brock cheers, "Alright! Tackle attack worked even though Noctowl was confused! Now Noctowl's looking stronger!"
Noctowl's horns start glowing blue.
Mew notices it, "Noctowl…"
"What's that?" Jen asks.
"I'm not sure, but I think maybe Noctowl just learned how to use Confusion!" Brock says.
"I think it is," Mew says and takes out her Pokedex.
Dexter says, "Confusion. This powerful psychic attack confuses an opponent and weakens it, as well."
"This is great!" Mew says.
Then calls out, "Noctowl, use your Confusion attack!"
Haunter reaches for Noctowl as it fires the attack, severely hurting Haunter.
"Haunter! Morty calls out.
In no time, Haunter is knocked down and out.
The referee announces "Haunter is unable to battle! The match is tied!"
"Alright! That was great, Noctowl!" Mew says.
Awesome!" Misty says.
Jen and Molly cheer, "Go Noctowl!"
Surprised, Morty says, "I've never seen a Pokemon learn a new attack during a gym match. Noctowl must want to fulfill the trust Mew has in his Pokemon. But that won't be enough to earn him a badge!"
Then Morty throws his Pokeball and calls out, "I choose you, Gengar!"
Genger comes out of the Pokeball.
And now both Pokemon stare each other down.
Mew says in thought, "Noctowl can't last much longer. I'll have to try to win fast."
Then Mew calls out, "Noctowl, Confusion!"
Noctowl launched the attack.
Morty calls out, "Gengar, Shadow Ball!"
Gengar fires the attack, hits the Confusion attack, and explodes. The wind from the explosion rushes all the way to everyone on the sidelines behind Mew.
"Look at that power!" Brock calls out.
"You can say that again!" Tomo calls out.
And Brock says, "Gastly and Haunter were strong, too, but Gengar's stronger than both of them!"
And then Gengar then disappears.
"It disappeared!" Misty cries out.
Mew calls out to her Pokemon, "Use Foresight!"
Morty calls out, "Use Night Shade!"
Gengar fires while invisible, but Noctowl dodges.
"Look out!" Mew calls out.
Noctowl dodges over and over again.
Misty is astonished, "Wow! Gengar can even attack when it's invisible!"
"Noctowl has to use Foresight or it'll never win!" Brock says.
Noctowl dodges another Night Shade attack.
"What now, Mew?" Morty questions, "It's going to take a lot of concentration for Noctowl to use its Foresight. But if Noctowl's dodging Gengar's attacks, you don't stand a chance!"
"He's right, Mewis in a tough spot!" Morty says, "She's gotta do something to stop Gengar or she's gonna lose!"
"But what can she do?" Misty wonders.
"Gengar may be invisible, but you know it's out there!" Brock says.
Then calls out, "You gotta fight back, Mew! You gotta think of a way for Noctowl to find it!"
"I know Gengar's out there, but how do we attack it if we can't see where it is?" Mew says and tries to think.
Just then, Mew comes up with an idea, "Hey, wait! Noctowl, send Confusion through the whole building!"
"Noctowl does so, and the force of the attack soon reveals Gengar.
"It worked, Mew!" Misty cheers.
Brock says, "Gengar's right up there!"
Then Mew calls out, "Quick, use your Foresight!"
Noctowl launches the attack.
Morty calls out, "Gengar, Shadow Ball!"
But Mew calls out, "Tackle it!
Noctowl charges in as Gengar prepares a Shadow Ball and nails Gengar hard, sending it to the ceiling before it falls.
"Gengar! Morty calls out.
Gengar lands on the ground below, leaving a hole in the ceiling where it hit. Gengar tries to get up, but collapses and is knocked out.
Seeing the result, the Referee calls out, "Gengar is unable to continue! Noctowl wins the round! The match goes to the challenger, Mew!"
Mew happily cheers, "We won! Noctowl, you did it!"
Misty says, "Congratulations, guys!"
Tomo, Jen, and Molly cheer, "They did it!"
Morty calls out Gengar and says, "You put up a great fight, Gengar, but I have to admit, they put up a better one." and watches Mew hugging Noctowl.
Later, outside of the gym.
Morty says, "I have a lot of faith in you Mew. In fact, I believe more that you've seen Ho-Oh. With you, anything's possible. Well, this is what you came for. The Fog Badge is yours, my friend. You earned them." and holds out the Fog Badge. A badge that is shaped like a wispy ghost.
"Thank you very much, Morty. I waited a long time for this one," Mew says.
Pikachu and Eevee happily say, "Pika Pikachu!/EEvee Eev!" (We've got number four!)
Mew then turns to Molly, "And it seems you've got a new friend, Molly."
"Yeah," Molly says, and turns to the Pokemon, "Right?"
The dog Pokemon barks in reply.
"What kind of Pokemon is it?" Tomo asks.
"Let's see," Mew says, and takes out the Pokedex.
Dexter says, "Greavard, the Ghost Dog Pokemon. A Ghost Type. This friendly Pokémon doesn't like being alone. Pay it even the slightest bit of attention, and it will follow you forever. This Pokemon originated from the Paldea Region."
And then Greavard licks Molly on the cheek.
"Looks like that Greavard really likes you," Tomo says.
"I think it's cute," Molly says.
Then asks, "You wanna come with me." as she pets it on the head.
The Pokemon barks and licks Molly again.
"I take that as a yes," Misty says.
Soon, everyone begins laughing. Not only Mew and Noctowl have earned a Fog Badge, Mew has a new Pokemon friend, Greavard. And Mew and her friends will continue on their journey. One thing for sure, Mew and her Pokemon have also become closer.
Later that evening, meanwhile, Team Rocket is seen running for their lives.
Jessie screams, " This is a nightmare!"
"It started like a dream!" James cries out.
Meowth panics, "The food we was gonna eat almost wound up eating us!"
Jessie cries out, "Why did this have to happen?! What a terrible experience this has been!"
"You're right, it's been absolutely ghastly!" James says.
Wobbuffet also cries out, "Wobbuffet." (We're blasting off, again.)
Team Rocket screams as they run into the sunset.
