Episode 87: Ring Master

As they continue their adventure to the next Johto gym in Olivine City, Mew and her friends find themselves passing through an intriguing little village.

"What's this?" Misty asks.

"It's an intriguing little village, Misty!" Brock says.

Suddenly, they hear something.

"What was that?" Tomo asks.

The group soon see two large Pokemon locked up in a wrestling grapple.

Misty notices, "Guys, look up there!"

"Pokemon!" Jen says.

The group look to see a Feraligator and a Nidoking are grappling with one another.

"Great! They're having a Pokemon battle!" Mew says.

"It's amazing," Molly says.

Then Misty notices one of the Pokemon, "Isn't that blue one a Feraligatr?"

Feraligatr easily throws the Nidoking aside as its trainer looks on happily.

Someone then shouts, "NEXT! GO!"

The one who shouts is a grown man wearing an orange shirt with dark green hair.

Mew and the others watch as Feraligator begins to wrestle with a Heracross.

"Way cool," Tomo says.

"That guy must be using all different Pokemon to train his Feraligatr," Brock says.

Mew brings out her Pokedex and Dexter says, "Feraligatr, the Big Jaw Pokémon. The final evolution of Totodile. A Water Type. Once a Feraligator has clamped its powerful jaws around an opponent, it won't let go until the opponent is defeated."

"It looks so cool," Mew says.

Eevee agrees.

Feraligatr gives Heracross a toss, eliminating it.

"Did you see that, Brock?" Misty replies, "That's the fifth one! Feraligatr's awesome!"

"It's really got power to spare. Even after all those battles, Feraligatr still ready for more!" Brock says.

"Soon, a Granbull charges and both it and Feraligatr grapple.

The man calls out, "Now throw it down, Feraligatr!"

Watching the match is an old man who says, "Very impressive. Very impressive indeed."

Feraligatr tosses Granbull aside with ease.

"Feraligatr won again!" Misty cheers.

"Yay!" Molly happily cheers.

"Yeah, easy," Mew says.

The young man says to the Feraligatr, "Nice work, let's take a little break."

"Your Feraligatr has gotten much stronger, Raiden," The old man says.

The young man, Raiden says, "You just mark my words, Shonosuke, this year, we're gonna win the King's Rock."

"What is a King's Rock?" Molly asks.

"A King's Rock is a special stone that looks like a stone crown a king wears. It's an Evolution Stone that can help some Pokemon evolve," Mew says.

"Really?" Mew asks.

"That's right. I read that it can help Slowpoke evolve into Slowking while it helps Poliwhirl evolve to a Politoed," Mew says,

"I guess they must have the Pokemon here do sumo wrestling," Brock says.

Soon, Misty rushes ahead to admire the Feraligatr, "It's a...water Pokemon!"

Mew and the others rush over.

"Misty!" Brock calls out.

"Hey, what are you doing here?" Mew asks.

Noticing them, Raiden questions, "Who are you?"

Moments later, after introductions, Mew and her friends meet up with Raiden and Shounosuke inside.

Raiden explains, "In this town, the Pokemon battles are a little different. Almost all of the trainers here are into Sumo Wrestling and that's what we train our Pokemon to compete in. By the way, my name is Raiden and this is Shonosuke, the executive director of the Pokemon Sumo Society."

"That's impressive," Brock says.

Shonosuke laughs and says, "It's only a title, son."

Misty turns to the others, "Maybe we should go, they probably still have a lot of training to do."

But Raiden says, "Stay. We don't mind an audience." Then turns to his Pokemon, "Feraligatr, workout time!"

Feraligatr starts its workout, the group is surprised to see it.

"It's amazing!" Misty says.

"Yeah!" Mew agrees.

With that, Misty and Mew call out, "Come on out, Totodile!"

Both Totodile come out of their Pokeball, and Mew's Pokeball dances happily.

Mew then says, "Totodile, someday, that's what you're gonna look like when you evolve."

Shonosuke turns to Mew, "You and your friends are in luck. The conference begins today."

"What conference is that?" Tomo asks.

"Well, you've heard of the Pokemon Sumo Conference, haven't you? That's the event that Feraligatr is training to compete in," Shonosuke says.

Then Jen asks, "What exactly is Pokemon Sumo?"

"It's a traditional wrestling match in which two Pokemon must battle each other using only their physical strength without relying on any of the usual attacks," Shonosuke says.

"That must be awesome," Mew says, amazed.

"It is. The no attack rule makes it much more interesting because the trainer and his Pokemon have to work that much closer and harder," Raiden says.

"Raiden and his Feraligatr are expected to be the winners of the Sumo Conference this year," Shonosuke says.

"Sounds interesting. Maybe we could hang around and see the matches," Brock says.

"Maybe so, but I sure like to compete in it. I think I'll enter it," Mew says.

"But you've never been in a sumo match," Misty says, "Are you sure about this?"

"I think I'm sure. After all, it's a good way to learn a different way to battle. As long as it's a Pokemon match, I can win it!" Mew says.

"He reminds me of me. When I first came here, I was headed for the Johto League, too. But then I got into sumo wrestling and I've never left," Raiden says.

Mew turns to Raiden and Shonosuke asks, "By the way, what are the rules of the competition?"

"You see, any Pokemon can compete in the matches, as long as it's heavy," Raiden says.

"Heavy?" Mew replies, confused.

"In order to enter, a Pokemon it's gotta weigh at least 80 kilograms or more," Raiden says.

Then Mew has an idea, "I know. I can use my Snorlax."

"Great idea. Snorlax is really heavy," Tomo says.

"I think Snorlax is an excellent choice," Brock adds.

Later, a whole line of Pokemon is seen being weighed for the tournament.

Nurse Joy announces, "If your Pokemon has completed the official weighing, please move to the waiting room. If not, please step up to the scale."

Suddenly, two odd figures step up.

They both say, "We're next, Nurse Joy."

"Oh, yes. Miss Jessiyaki and Mr. Jamie Sosumi," Nurse Joy says, "What Pokemon will you be entering?"

"Our toughest competitor," Jessiyaki says.

"Milky!" Jamie says.

And the 'Milky' a Miltank is presented, but it looks like a Wobbuffet in a Miltank costume. The Pokemon steps onto the scale and it weighs 80 kilos.

"Perfect! It's at exactly the correct fighting weight. Your Pokémon's approved to participate, but I must say, it's very, unusual," Nurse Joy says.

"WOBBUHHHHH... (?) Wobbuffet speaks up, but Jessiyaki stops him

Of course, it's just Jessie and James in disguises,

Jessie covers Wobbuffet's mouth, "Be quiet, you. You're supposed to be a Miltank, remember?

"Try not to have a cow, Jessie," Meowth replies.

Later on, Team Rocket are in the waiting room to talk about their next scheme.

"That was close," Jessie says, relieved.

And James says, confused, "Jessie, I don't see why you wanted to enter this thing in the first place."

"We enter to win it, James," Jessie answers.

"We know dat, but why?" Meowth asks

"I want to be a winner for a change!" Jessie answers, "I'm tired of being on the losing end of everything we try! Don't you understand what it means to have pride and self-respect and a sense of worth and value and dignity?!"

Meowth turns away with his arms crossed, "I use ta, before I met you."

James then asks, "Jessie, how are we supposed to win a sumo match with a lightweight like Wobbuffet?"

"You don't think I would enter without having a trick up my rather large sleeve, do you? Wobbuffet's the centerpiece of a secret strategy that can't fail," Jessie says.

Meanwhile, Mew and the others are helping Snorlax enter the contest.

"Snorlax, I choose you!" Mew says, and calls Snorlax out of his Pokeball.

However, Snorlax breaks the scale as he sits on it, startling everyone.

Mew turns to Nurse Joy, "I'm sorry."

"Well, the scale's smashed, so I guess that means Snorlax made the weight minimum. That means you're approved," Nurse Joy says.

"Thanks, Nurse Joy. That's great," Mew says

Soon, the conference is starting, and Shonosuke announces, "Welcome to the thirty-fifth annual Pokemon Sumo Conference. As always, we have a heavyweight roster of contenders ready for wrestling action, but only one will walk away the winner!"

Meanwhile, Mew and her friends are still in the waiting room, because Snorlax is asleep.

"The opening ceremonies have already started," Misty says.

"Yeah, I know. But that doesn't seem to bother Snorlax," Mew says.

Back outside, Shonosuke also announces, "As always, the victorious team will win the coveted King's Rock. In addition, the winners will also receive a one year's supply of Pokemon food."

As soon as he hears Pokemon Food, Snorlax quickly gets up.

"Hey, you're awake!" Mew says, amazed.

"Snorlax!" (And ready!) Snorlax says.

"I wonder what made Snorlax decide to get up all of a sudden," Misty replies.

"I bet it was that one year's food supply," Brock says.

Outside, Shonosuke says, "Losing Pokemon will be eliminated and winner's will advance until the last two winning opponents face each other for the crown. Good luck to all, and may the best Pokemon win!"

Soon, Mew and her Snorlax appear.

"Hey! Hi!" Mew says.

"Mew! I see your Snorlax came through," Raiden says.

"Big Pokemon," Misty replies.

"Pika!" (Real big!) Pikachu says.

"Eevee!" (Very big!) Eevee says.

"They should be. Most of the Pokemon who compete here are bred exclusively for sumo wrestling," Raiden says.

"They all look big, but your Feraligatr looks stronger than the rest," Misty says.

Raiden looks to his right, "Maybe so, but take a look down there. Everybody says that's the Pokemon to beat this year."

"The Blastoise?" Tomo questions.

Both the Blastoise and Radien's Feraligatr eye each other. Tomo, Jen, and Molly become startled and hide behind Misty, Brock, and Mew.

"I'd hate to get caught between, those two!" Jen says, frightened.

The Pokemon agree.

Shonosuke then announces, "We are now ready for the first sumo match to begin!"

And with that, the competition begins and the first match is starting.

The referee announces, "FROM THE EAAAAAAAST, URSARING! FROM THE WEEEEEEST, MILLLLLTANK!"

At the stands, Mew and the others notice the odd face with that Miltank.

Brock says, "Hey, guys. That Miltank has a pretty weird looking face, don't you think?"

"You're right. There's something odd and yet familiar about it," Mew says.

At the battlefield, James cheers, "Jessiyaki!"

"Don't forget about your secret strategy move!" Meowth says.

And the Referee announces, "Face your opponent! Let the match, begin!"

Jessie calls out, "Miltank, you know what to do!"

The 'Miltank' in question starts to glow a familiar color, catching Shonosuke and Mew and her friends' eyes.

"Counter?!" Mew exclaims in shock.

Ursaring is instantly sent flying, crashing out of the ring.

"Oh, no! It's over!" the male trainer exclaims.

Jessie laughs triumphantly, "Excellent! Just like we practiced, Miltank!"

"We won! Da secret strategy woiked and it's gonna take us all da way to da winner's coicle!" Meowth cheers.

"WOBUFFET!" (Victory!) Wobbuffet cheers.

As Team Rocket celebrates, the referee makes the call, "Miltank wins the match!"

"I thought they can't use attacks!" Brock says.

"Yeah. And I never heard of a Miltank using Counter," Mew says.

Just then, Shonosuke calls out, "Wait! Hold it right there! I lodge a protest!

"Protest?" Molly replies, confused.

"It rarely happens, but whenever the executive director has doubts about a decision, he can lodge a protest," Raiden says.

Then Shonosuke announces, "The referee must not have seen what I saw. That Miltank most definitely used a Counter attack, and according to the rules, that Miltank is hereby disqualified!"

And Jessie hears it, "Disqualified?"

Team Rocket tries to argue against Shonosuke's decision.

But Shonosuke is not hearing it, "Save your breath, my decision is final. Goodbye."

This makes Jessie furious, "How dare you treat us this way! Do you have any idea who you're talking to, you old coot?!"

"I don't. Why don't you tell me?" Shonosuke answers.

And with that, Team Rocket begins their motto.

Jessie:

Prepare for trouble, and stop your hassling!

James:

Because we're through with Sumo wrassling!

Jessie:

To protect the world from devastation.

James:

To unite all peoples within our nation.

Jessie:

To denounce the evils of truth and love.

James:

To extend our reach to the stars above.

Jessie: (removing her costume)

Jessie.

James: (removing his costume)

James.

Jessie:

We're Team Rocket, blasting off at the speed of light.

James:

Surrender now, or prepare to fight, fight, fight!

Meowth:

Meowth, dat's right!

Meowth drops down and stamps his right foot, sumo style.

And Wobbuffet leaps out of his costume, "WOBBUFFET!" (OH, SO TRUE!)

Team Rocket winces when they see Wobbuffet has blown their cover.

"A Wobbuffet?" Shonosuke questions.

"I knew that Pokemon's face looked familiar and strange!" Mew says.

"Team Rocket entered their Wobbuffet disguised as a Miltank!" Tomo says.

"Those cheaters!" Molly says, angrily.

"Further proof of your duplicity!" Shonosuke says, sternly, "Have you no decency? You've made a mockery of the rules we abide by!"

"Can it, gramps! Why should we always have to play by the rules if we don't have a chance of winning without breaking them?" Jessie angrily says.

James agrees, "It's discriminatory!"

"Yeah and it's unfair too!" Meowth adds.

Jessie brings out her Pokeball, "Now it's our turn!"

James chuckles and brings out his Pokeball.

Meowth adds, "Dat's right! Now it's time to play by our rules and steal your Pokemon!"

Annoyed, Raiden says, "We've had enough of you! Hydro Pump, Feraligatr!"

Feraligatr also has enough as well and uses Hydro Pump to send Team Rocket flying out of the stadium.

Team Rocket cries out, "We're blasting off again!"

"WOBBUFFET!" (And we're wet!) Wobbuffet cries out.

Mew happily says, "Great job, Raiden!"

"That was cool!" Jen says.

"And good riddance to those cheaters!" Tomo adds.

"Agreed," Raiden says, "There's no room in the sumo ring for cheaters. Anyone who would knowingly break the rules doesn't deserve to be here.

"My thoughts exactly!" Shonosuke says, and announces, "Now, on with the matches!"

Soon after, the next matches is about to take place as the referee announces, "FROOOOM THE EAAAAAST, FERALIGATRRRR! FRRRROOOM THE WEESSST, GOOOOOOLEM!"

"That Golem weighs a lot more than Feraligatr, it's gonna be tough to beat," Brock points out.

The referee announces, "Face your opponent, and begin!"

Raiden calls out, "Let's go, Feraligatr!"

Feraligatr charges.

The other trainer calls out, "Go, Golem! Get in there!"

Golem charges in and the two lock up.

"Power! The team that can focus its power will be victorious!" Shonosuke says, seeing the event.

"Power's great, but Golem's got a weight advantage," Mew says.

"Feraligatr, hold Golem off!" Misty says.

Raiden calls out, "Let Golem get closer, Feraligatr!"

Everyone is shocked by Raiden's command while Golem loses its balance.

"Feraligatr, strike now! Raiden calls out.

Feraligatr raises a fist and brings it down hard on Golem, allowing Golem to tumble out of the ring.

"I can't believe it!" The trainer says in shock.

The referee announces, "Feraligatr wins!"

"That Golem weighs four times as much as Feraligatr!" Brock says, shocked.

"How'd they do it?" Misty asks.

"They used both their strengths, and their weaknesses. That's just what we've gotta do!" Mew says.

The battle continues, a Golduck is smacked about by a Nidoking, a Rhydon slaps around a Quagsire, A Kangaskhan grapples with a Lickitung, And then we see Poliwrath preparing to face off with Mew's Snorlax.

"Participants ready?" The referee announces.

"Give it everything you've got Snorlax! There's a year of free Pokemon food in this for you!" Mew says.

Snorlax agrees.

The referee announces, "Face your opponent, and begin!"

The trainer calls out, "Poliwrath, go for the gut!"

Mew calls out, "Don't give in, Snorlax! Stand your ground!"

Poliwrath charges in, but it ends up being rebounded away from Snorlax upon contact due to Snorlax's gut, sending it flying out of the ring and shocking everyone.

The Poliwrath trainer exclaims, "What happened?!"

"Snorlax wins the match!" The referee announces.

"Alright!" Mew cheers and hugs her Snorlax.

"Did you see what I saw?" Misty asks, surprised.

And Brock says, "Poliwrath came on strong with a lot of speed and power, but I guess speed and power can't match... guts."

Snorlax lumbers eagerly towards the year's supply of food.

Mew rushes towards Snorlax, making him stop.

"Not yet, Snorlax," Mew says, and pats Snorlax's shoulder, "We still got more matches to battle against before you get the Food Supplies."

Snorlax agrees with a nod.

"Snorlax may be goofy, but it gets the job done," Raiden comments.

"This rookie's turning out to be a real contender," Shonosuke adds.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket is wandering around some concession and merchandise stands.

"Things could be worse, and it will be," Jessie says.

James notices a print on the stand, "Hey. Look at these. Souvenir Poke-prints."

Jessie soon gets excited, "Why, James! This is it! This is the key to our fortune!

"A Pokemon paw print?" Meowth says.

"We'll make phony prints and sell them to all the thousands of Pokemon fans at the wrestling match!" Jessie says.

"Great!" James says.

"We make the fakes and rake in the money!" Meowth says, eager with the idea.

And Jessie says, "And not only that! By posing as souvenir peddlers, we can hang around the stadium! Then, as the wrestlers come out, we'll steal them!"

Meanwhile, the finalists are lined up before Shonosuke.

Shonosuke announces, "The time has come for the semifinal sumo matches. Feraligatr vs Blastoise and Snorlax vs Machamp."

Mew says to Raiden, "Good luck, Raiden. I hope we see you in the finals."

"Me, too," Raiden says.

Soon, Raiden's match is up next.

Referee announces, "FROM THE EEEEEASSSSST, FERAAAAALIGATR, FROM THE WEEEEEST, BLAAAAAAASTOISE!

"Oh, wow! This is the best match yet!" Misty says, excited.

Then turns to the others, "Who should I root for? They're both big, strong water Pokemon!"

"I say Raiden will win," Tomo says.

"Me too," Jen says.

Soon, the referee announces, "Wrestlers ready? Face your opponent, and begin!"

"Let's go! Charge it!" Raiden says.

The Blastoise trainer calls out, "Come on, Blastoise! Let's win this!"

Both Pokemon charge and lock up.

Raiden calls out, "Push it away!"

Feraligatr tries to do so, but Blastoise regains its footing.

The trainer then calls out, "Blastoise, jump on it!"

Blastoise leaps overhead.

"Hurry up!" The trainer calls out.

But Raiden calls out, "Dodge it, Feraligatr!"

Feraligatr steps aside.

"Now's Raiden's chance!" Mew says.

"Get it Feraligatr!" Tomo calls out.

Raiden says to his partner, "Feraligatr, go!"

Feraligatr pushes shoves the back of Blastoise's shell to make it move forward, but it's not enough to send it out of the ring.

"It almost went out!" Jen says.

The Blastoise trainer calls out, "Blastoise, pour it on!"

Blastoise attacks with rapid palm strikes.

"Wow! I never saw Blastoise move like that!" Brock says.

The rapid strikes push Feraligatr closer to the edge of the circle.

"It's right at the line!" Molly cries out.

"Don't cross it, Feraligatr!" Misty calls out.

The trainer calls out, "Go, Blastoise!

Blastoise closes in for the final strike.

"Palms together and twist!" Raiden calls out.

Feraligatr dodges the oncoming palm strike and nails Blastoise.

"That's it!" Tomo says.

"Look out!" Misty calls out.

Feraligatr easily throws Blastoise out of the ring.

The referee announces, "Blastoise is out! Feraligatr wins!"

"Hey! We did it again, old buddy!" Raiden says to his Pokemon.

"I never thought they'd win that one!" Brock says.

"That was sweet!" Misty says, amazed.

Mew turns to Snorlax, "Hey, Snorlax. It's our turn, now. First Machamp, then Feraligatr."

Snorlax agrees.

As the next round is underway, Machamp charges in, but is sent flying out of the stadium and everyone, including Mew, stares in shock at the speed of the battle

"Snorlax wins!" The Referee announces.

Soon, both the finalists meet, it's Mew and Snorlax vs. Raiden and Feraligatr.

Raiden turns to Mew, "I'm impressed, Mew. With Snorlax, you've come a very long way, but I came here to win this. I can't go easy on you just because you're a real nice kid."

I don't want you to," Mew says.

Shonosuke says, "You're to be proud of yourself, Mew. You're the very first rookie to ever make it to the final match. And now, this is it. Make sure you both give it your all."

"Yes, sir," Mew and Raiden say.

And with that, the finals are about to take place.

The referee announces, "FROM THE EEEEASSST, FERAAAAAAALIGATR! FROOOOM THE WEEEEST, SNOOOOOOORLAX!"

"We can do this, Snorlax," Mew says.

Snorlax agrees.

Referee announces, "Face your opponent, begin!"

Mew calls out, "Get in there! Grab it, Snorlax!"

"Hang tough! Knock it off balance, Feraligatr!" Raiden calls out.

Both Pokemon charge, but Raiden's strategy proves fruitful as Snorlax is knocked off balance.

"Snorlax! Try to keep your balance!" Mew calls out.

Snorlax manages to do so.

That's it, Snorlax!" Misty calls out.

Raiden calls out, "Throw it out!"

Mew calls out, "Snorlax, dodge!"

Feraligatr closes in, but Snorlax dodges easily, surprising Shonosuke and Raiden.

"It can't be!" Raiden says in shock.

"It may not look fast, but Snorlax can be pretty speedy when it has to be!" Mew says.

"If you think that's speed, wait till you see this, my friend!" Raiden says.

And calls out, "Aright, show em, Feraligatr!.

Feraligatr goes on the offense with a series of fast palm strikes at Snorlax.

"Snorlax!" Mew cries out.

"I think this match could be over!" Brock says.

Snorlax is pushed closer to the edge of the ring.

"It's almost out of the ring!" Misty says, shocked.

And Raiden says, "Just a little bit further! Push it as hard as you can!"

Feraligatr pushes as hard as possible.

"Snorlax is gonna fall!" Jen panics.

Mew calls out, "Snorlax doesn't have the strength to beat Feraligatr, so I'll have to use its weakness. Alright, I just hope this works! Snorlax, take a deep breath!

Snorlax does so.

Raiden gets confused, "What's it doing?"

Snorlax's gut expands a bit, pushing Feraligatr away, surprising Shonosuke.

Mew's friends cheer, "Alright!"

"I never seen a defensive move like that!" Raiden says, impressed.

"Nice work, Snorlax! Now we're back in the match again!" Mew happily says.

"Maybe, Mew, but not for long!" Raiden says.

"We'll see about that, Raiden!" Mew says.

"Feraligatr, go!" Raiden calls out.

"You too, Snorlax!" Mew calls out

Both Pokemon charge, and Feraligatr has Snorlax in an arm lock.

"Throw it out of the ring!" Raiden calls out.

Feraligatr hoists Snorlax up.

"Snorlax is in trouble!" Brocks says in shock.

"Snorlax, hang in there!" Mew calls out.

Snorlax turns back to a vertical position.

"This is it!" Raiden says.

However, Snorlax lands on its feet within the limits of the ring, and the impact of its landing causes the whole land to shake

Mew calls out, "Hurry, Snorlax! Push it out of the ring!"

Snorlax closes in, and with one palm strike, Feraligatr is pushed back far enough for his right foot to exit the ring, ending the match, shocking Raiden.

The referee announces, "Snorlax is our new champion!"

"Yeah!" Mew happily cheers.

Pikachu, Eevee, Totodile, and the others cheer happily.

Shonosuke calls out, "Hooray! The young rookie went all the way to the top!"

"That was a great match!" Brock says.

"I'm so glad Mew won it!" Jen happily says.

And Misty realizes something, "Too bad Feraligatr couldn't win, too."

"It's a shame," Molly replies.

Raiden says to his Pokemon, "Don't feel badly, you were just great."

Feraligatr thanks Raiden.

"Thanks, Snorlax," Mew happily says and hugs Snorlax.

Snorlax then gives Mew hugs and kisses.

Later, Mew and Snorlax are standing in the winner's circle.

"And so, in recognition of his triumph over Raiden and Feraligatr, I hereby proclaim Mewand Snorlax the winners of the thirty-fifth annual Pokemon Sumo Conference. And it is my distinct honor to present them with the coveted King's Rock as a symbol of their victory," Shonosuke says, and presents her with the King's Rock "Congratulations to you, Mew."

"Thank you very much, sir," Mew says and takes the King's Rock, "Look at that. The King's Rock."

"Pi Pikachu!" (Yes, we did it!) Pikachu says.

"Eevee!" (Alright!) Eevee says.

Shonosuke says, "And don't forget your other prize…"

"A one year's supply of Pokemon food!" Nurse Joy says, presenting the food.

Snorlax immediately chows down, frightening Nurse Joy.
