Episode 90: The Art of Pokemon
Mew and her friends continue traveling closer to Olivine City, and the next Johto REgion. But today, their route leads them to a place known as Whitestone as they travel across the mountain area
Looking at the guidebook, Brock says, "It says here in the guide book that Whitestone is one of the most historic sites in the whole Johto region."
Mew looks ahead, "Well, there it is, guys!"
Everyone looks ahead to see Whitestone, which is a place that has buildings made of white stone structures.
"It's beautiful," Misty says.
"I can see why they call it Whitestone," Jen says.
"Yep. Whitestone sure lives up to its name," Brock says.
Unknown to the group, Team Rocket spies from behind.
"So, it seems they're headed for Whitestone," Jessie says as she uses her binoculars to zoom into the location, "It certainly is beautiful."
"It looks like all of dem buildings is made out of marble. Dat's ritzy!" Meowth says.
"I just adore marble! I love everything made of it! I love marble bathtubs, marble tables, marble statues!" Jessie says and lets out a sign as she fantasizes, "Everything!"
"I never understood why grandpa-pa's mansion was made of marble, it was like a mausoleum with lots of bedrooms and bathrooms," James says, and jokes, "Maybe they use marble because it's...marbleous!"
Jessie and Meowth both smack James, "Bad joke, James."
Sorry," James apologizes.
Meanwhile, Mew and her friends make their way through the city.
"Whitestone appears to be made of marble, but it's not. Centuries ago, the townspeople decided to paint the town white. And succeeding generations have continued the tradition. I guess paint's a lot cheaper than marble is, huh?" Brock says.
"Well, even if it's not real marble, it's really pretty," Misty says.
Suddenly, someone shouts, "Hey!"
Everyone raises their heads and when they look forward, they see a woman yelling at some Pokemon who are vandalizing her house by painting it with their tails.
Each of them is a bipedal, beagle-like Pokémon with white and brown fur. It has a long tail with an end resembling a paintbrush. This paintbrush oozes with paint, and the color of the paint may vary for each, as well as change in hue corresponding to its emotions. Sprites from the games depict green, brown, and red, while the anime also shows yellow and blue. They have a footprint on its back that is the same color as the tip of the tail. They also have a round structure on its head with a point that resembles a beret. It has floppy, brown ears and a brown collar on its neck. The rings encircling their eyes are also brown, as are their eyelids. Its arms have two brown bands, and its legs have only one. Each of its limbs has three digits.
Someone shouts, "What are you doing to my nice, white wall?!"
"That's weird," Misty says.
"Those are some strange graffiti artists," Brock says.
"What are they?" Jen asks.
"Those are Smeargles," Mew says, and takes out her Pokedex.
Dexter says, "Smeargle, the Painter Pokemon. A Normal Type. Colored fluids ooze from their tails, which they use to mark their territory and to express themselves.
"Those troublemakers! Let's go get em!" Someone snouts.
Soon, the townspeople form an angry mob and chase after the Smeargle, who hide behind Mew and the others.
Someone shouts at them, "So! Those vandals belong to you, do they?! You lot of punks! This is a historic place and the people in this town work hard to keep it clean! We don't need your Pokemon running around sloping paint all over the place!"
"Hey! Hold on a minute!" Tomo calls out.
"We just got here, ma'am! We don't know who these Smeargle belong to!" Brock says.
But the woman isn't buying it, "If they don't belong to you, then why are they hiding behind you?!"
"Because they're scared. You be too if an angry mob chases after them," Mew says.
"Just step aside! We'll show em something to be scared about!" The woman says.
Seeing them frightened, Mew says, "These Smeargle might not be ours, but that doesn't mean we're gonna let you hurt em! That isn't fair!"
"My friend's right! You're acting like a bully!" Misty says.
"Don't insult me!" The woman shouts.
Suddenly, someone speaks up, "Please, don't argue with each other."
Everyone looks to see an old man within the mob. He has a brown beret and glasses along with dark clothes.
The old man explains, "I can explain if you'll allow me to. The Smeargle have nothing to do with these people. The Smeargle are my responsibility. They belong to me, and they aren't trying to make trouble. They're painting Pokemon."
The Smeargle then demonstrate their talent.
"In fact, I prefer to call them artist Pokemon," The old man says.
However, the town people don't fully agree.
Townsperson #1: They're artist Pokemon?
Townsperson #2: You call that crazy scribbling art?
"Who's to say was is and is not art? Art and beauty are in the eye of the beholder," The old man says.
But the woman angrily says, "Keep your fairies to yourself, pal! Listen, your Pokemon made this mess, so you're responsible!"
"I wholeheartedly agree with you," The old man says. He then pulls something out of his jacket, "Please use this to clean up, if you wish."
"What's this?" The woman asks.
"It's a check from the First Johto Bank. You may use it to pay for any damage my Smeargle may cause," The old man says.
\ "But there's no amount written on this check," The woman says.
But the old man says, "You may write in any amount you like, ma'am. Spend whatever's necessary to restore the walls to their original condition."
As the old man speaks, Team Rocket is spying on them.
"Hey, dat old guy must be loaded. He handed that big mouth lady a blind check and he doesn't seem to care how much it's for," Meowth says.
"If I were her, I'd write in one million dollars and cash it quick," Jessie says.
"But, Jessie, what if that old gentleman is a poor man? He might need that million dollars," James says.
"You're right, forget it," Jessie agrees.
Then Wobbuffet agrees, "WOBBUH!" (Good call!)
Soon, a news reporter comes in.
The reporter says, "Coming through. Pardon the intrusion, but are you, by any chance, Jack Pollockson?"
"Jack Pollockson?!" Brock replies, confused.
"Yes, I'm Jack Pollockson," The man, Jack answers.
The reporter happily says, "I KNEW I recognized that face! It's an honor to be speaking with you, Mr. Pollockson, sir."
Even the townspeople were surprised.
Townsperson #3: Jack Pollockson?!
Townsperson #4: That's Jack Pollockson?
Townsperson #5: THE Jack Pollockson?!
In camera, the reporter says, "Look here. I've just run into the one and only Jack Pollockson. Imagine, meeting him in person! Friends, I came here to make a documentary about this historic but, frankly, boring and bland little town, but now I've changed my plans! Starting right now, my documentary will be about the life and work of Jack Pollockson!"
"Hey, guys. He's pretty famous. Even I've heard of him," Brock says.
"What's he famous for?" Molly asks.
"The book says he's a world renowned abstract artist. A pioneer in the art of painting. A superstar," Brock says, excited.
Then Jack shows them the artwork, "Here, judge for yourselves."
Everyone has a look at one of Pollockson's works.
"That's a painting?" Mew questions.
"It looks more like wallpaper," Misty says, confused.
Then Brock says, "They say you can't really experience the real power of his paintings from pictures in a book, or even on TV."
The reporter continues, "This will be a world TV exclusive! We'll come to your studio, and show the whole world your Pollockson paintings that hang there. Well, Jack? Doesn't that sound like a blockbuster broadcast?"
But Jack says, "You're wasting your time, sonny. A picture of a painting can't capture its true essence."
"Okay, if you don't want us to show the art, we can focus on the artist, instead. We'll show the viewers how you create your masterpieces. First, we'll show you putting on your smock, then we'll zoom in as you pick your paint brushes," The reporter says.
However, Jack says, "Oh, I don't use paint brushes. I leave that to my artistic little friends here. The Smeargle are my paint brushes."
The news crew is shocked while our heroes are puzzled.
"The Smeargle are paint brushes?" Mew says, confused.
Suddenly, the Smeargle start going on a painting spree all over town.
"Hey!" The woman cries out.
Jack says, "Don't move! You may be ruining the Smeargle's newest masterpiece!"
Townsperson #6: What is this?
Townsperson #7: It must be, art.
Townsperson #8: If you say so.
The reporter says, "Start rolling, Frank! We're witnessing a masterpiece in the making."
Soon, even Mew and the others have been painted.
"Sorry guys. I guess we're in a picture," Mew says.
"Imagine, me part of masterpiece. I like it!" Misty says.
Then Jack calls out, "Stop, Smeargle!"
The Smeargle return to their master.
Then Jack says, "I sincerely apologize. Obviously, they weren't inspired this time."
Everyone is puzzled.
"Sorry. They really made a big mess, didn't they?" Jack says.
Everyone falls over in disbelief.
Then Jack says, "I'm worried. It's been a long time since the Smeargle have painted anything of quality. I can't seem to inspire them anymore. I just hope I'm around long enough to see them do one more great one."
Meanwhile, Team Rocket reads up on Jack Pollockson.
Jessie reads, "'Anybody who sees one of Pollockson's works is certain to be impressed by it. Pollockson only displays works with which he's completely satisfied, and destroys all painting he deems inferior.' That's nice. His artwork must be very rare and valuable."
"My parents owned some artwork. A Picasso painting, a Rembrandt etching, and a gigantic statue by that Japanese monster, Rodan," James replies.
"If we could swipe and sell just one of dat guy's paintings, our money troubles would be ovah forevah!" Meowth says.
Then Jessie says, "Then I say, let's go swipe one!"
Meanwhile, back to Mew and the others.
"Maybe the next one will be better," Jack says.
Then turns to the group, "In any case, I'm sorry to have caused you so much trouble. I have an idea. My studio's just outside of town. Why don't you come and you can wash up and have a bite to eat?"
"Thanks, Jack, that'd be great!" Mew says.
Then the reporter says, "Mr. Pollockson, sir. Perhaps, you'd permit us to come so our viewers can see the art in your studio."
But Jack says, "I'm sorry, but I can't allow that. Art has to be experienced as it really is, not at a flickering picture on a television screen. Now I'll thank you to leave me and my Smeargle in peace."
The cameraman questions, "What are you saying? Your picture is better than mine?"
"Mr. Pollockson's right!" The reporter says.
"He is?" FRank questions.
"It's absolutely useless to try and show art on a television screen program," The reporter says.
"Huh?" Frank says, confused.
"Though images in photos and on television may resemble an original painting, you have to experience one in person to really feel it!" The reporter says.
"He's right. I REALLY feel it," Brock says.
"Thank you for honoring my wishes, young man," Jack says.
The turns to his Pokemon, "Let's go, Smeargle."
The Smeargle agree.
"Come on. Let's get you cleaned up," Jack says.
Soon, Mew and her friends are at Jack's Studio, and they all get both themselves and their clothes cleaned.
"Man, that felt great, didn't it?" Tomo says.
"There's nothing like a hot bath," Misty says.
"My clothes are all nice and clean," Molly happily says.
But when they enter a room, they find paintings and paint all over the walls, courtesy of the Smeargle.
"Oh, wow! Look at all of these pictures! Who painted them?!" Mew asks, amazed.
"The Smeargle painted them," Jack says, "These are some examples of their earlier works. They paint whenever inspiration strikes, and their mood affects their work. If they're happy, the pictures are bright and sunny. If they're sad, the paintings are muted and somber." Then says, "Come on, I want you all to see something brand new I've been working on."
Soon, Mew and the others lineup to see the different canvases with multiple colored lines of paint all over them.
"This is interesting," Jen says.
"Since the Smeargle's recent paintings haven't been too good, I've been taking bits and pieces of them and putting them all together to create collages," Jack says, and picks up the next piece, They may be interesting, but to be honest, I don't think my collages are very good either. Do you?"
"Well, I'm not really an art expert, Mr. Pollockson," Brock says.
"When the paintings are good, what is it that makes them good?" Misty asks.
"It's hard to say," Jack answers, "It's that indescribable something that you can sense when it's there."
"You can sense it?" Mew asks.
"You can see it. And feel it and smell it!" Jack explains.
"I'm gonna try," Tomo says.
Meloetta and Skwovet agree.
Mew, Pikachu, and Eevee also decide to join in.
All of them smell the canvas.
"It smells like turpentine," Mew says.
"Maybe I'm not explaining it well," Jack says, "Here's what I believe: I believe everyone can sense when a painting is truly good. I think we all have that ability. We're born with it. But creating art, creating art is a very different matter. It takes real talent and hard work to make something of great beauty."
"That sounds so cool. It must be great to be an artist and make beautiful things," Misty says, amazed.
"The Smeargle and I used to create paintings that were astonishingly beautiful. I still have some hanging in my gallery. We could go and take a look at some right now, if you'd like to," Jack says.
"We would!" Everyone says, surprised.
"Let's go see em, Jack!" Mew says.
Soon, in the gallery, Jack unveils one of his masterpieces to Mew and her friends. Everyone is amazed to see the painting, and give them comments.
"Amazing!" Mew says.
"Awesome!" Misty says.
"Sure is!" Tomo says.
"It's so pretty," Jen says.
"And colorful," Molly adds.
"Looking at this makes me feel like the first time I saw, Officer Jenny," Brock says.
"It's an abstract, of course. It's about the play of light, and color, and joy. And looking at it still fills me with joy," Jack says.
Just then, the news reporter says, "He's right, he's so right!"
Everyone turns and sees the news crew.
"I know that technically we're trespassing, but I just had to see this with my own two eyes. And what you said before was right, the real beauty of these paintings can't be captured in pictures," The reporter says.
"We won't try," Frank says.
"I only wish that the whole world were here to see, the beauty that I'm seeing," The reporter says.
Then Wobbuffet appears, "WOBUFFET!" (Absolutely!)
"Wobbuffet?" Misty says, surprised.
That means Team Rocket's here.
Suddenly, Team Rocket is seen in front of our heroes looking at the same piece they were looking at with tear-filled eyes.
"What beauty!" James says.
"What power!" Meowth says.
"It sorta reminds me of me," Jessie says.
"WOBUFFET!" (Beautiful!) Wobbuffet agrees.
"You seem moved by my work," Jack says.
And with that, Team Rocket begins to perform their motto.
Jessie:
Your art evokes a lot of feeling.
James:
And that's what makes it good for stealing.
Jessie:
To protect the world from devastation!
James:
To unite all peoples within our nation!
Jessie:
To denounce the evils of truth and love!
James:
To extend our reach to the stars above!
Jessie:
Jessie!
James:
James!
Jessie:
Team Rocket, blast off at the speed of light!
James:
Surrender now, or prepare to fight!
Wobbuffet:
WOBUFFET! (That is right!)
Meowth:
Dat's right!
"You again?!" Mew says, angrily.
"What do you want here?!" Misty demands.
"The art," Jessie says.
"What else?" James adds.
"Hey, guys. I bet we'd make a ton with dis one," Meowth says.
But Jack calls out, "No, please! These works belong here for the whole world to see!"
"That's right! Even you losers can see how special and beautiful they are!" Misty says.
Of course," Jessie says. "In fact, looking at them takes me back, to the lonely days of my youth. And one special moment. And a kind word."
Jessie has a flashback to her childhood.
"You think I'm like, a beautiful Chrysanthemum? Lone little me?" Young Jessie questions.
Flashback ends:
"Thanks for the memories, Jack. Now let's steal the paintings," Jessie says.
"Yes, ma'am," James says.
But Meowth says, "I just thought of something! If we steal paintings this valuable, da cops will be looking for us everywhere! We'll be caught the second we try to sell em!"
"Oh," Jessie says.
"I know!" James says, "We'll take pictures of the paintings! If a picture is worth a thousand words, who knows what a picture from a digital camera could be worth?"
Team Rocket runs off.
"Come back here! Mew calls out.
But Jack says, "Let them go, Mew. No matter how good a photo is, it's not the real thing. I'm just happy the originals are safe with us.
The Smeargle happily agree.
Later that night, Team Rocket is at their balloon printing out the pictures they took, but Jessie doesn't like the first one they print and rips it apart.
"No, no, no! You can't sell cheap copies of artwork!" Jessie angrily says.
"I don't see why, Jessie. If it worked for Andy Warhol, why can't it work for me?" James replies.
"Copies of art are worthless! Only the original artworks matter," Jessie angrily says.
"Maybe we need toner," James says.
"If we can't sell copies, we can't get rich," Meowth says.
Then Jessie says, "I think I know a way for us to get very rich. We don't need to make copies, we can create our own original works of art. And all we need to do that is to kidnap those Smeargle."
Back at Jack's studio.
Jack explains his story, "When I was young, I wanted to be a Pokemon master and go on a journey like you, Mew. Until, one day, I saw something special in the art of the Smeargle. Subtle differences in their moods changed the colors that came from their tails, so each painting is unique.
One of the Smeargle is seen playing with Togepi using its tail as a toy.
"I knew then that I wanted to be an artist, and I knew I could do it by collaborating with the Smeargle," Jack says, and sighs, "But now, all that may be over with. We've done great work, but I'm afraid we may never be able to paint anything great again."
"Why do you say that?" Brock asks.
Then Jack explains, "I don't know if it was just old age, but lately, I can't make out the subtle color differences. I know they're there but I can't see them anymore. I think my days as an artist must be, drawing to a close."
"No way!" Mew says.
"Yea! Don't say that, Jack!" Tomo says.
"It's alright. I've had a very fulfilling career in art, and I loved every single minute of it. But it went by so quickly. It seems like I started only yesterday," Jack says, and looks ahead, "Look."
Everyone looks at the horizon.
Then Jack explains, "I remember one morning, fifty years ago, when the rising sun painted the sky, and the sea and the town in ten thousand colors. The reds, the blues, the yellows. I can see those colors, but only in my memory."
Suddenly, after a bit of silence, Team Rocket captures the Smeargle with a laugh.
Team Rocket cheers, "We caught your Smeargle!"
"We don't need to steal your paintings, old man," Jessie says.
"Or take snapshots!" James says.
"We got our own painters, now," Meowth says.
"Team Rocket!" Molly cries out.
"Come back with those Smeargle!" Brock shouts.
"You'll see em at a museum!" Meowth says.
Team Rocket laughs in triumph as they fly away.
"Oh no! The Smeargle are gone!" Jack says in shock.
Mew turns to Jack, "Don't worry. We'll get em back, as long as we can stay on Team Rocket's tail!"
Meanwhile, Team Rocket seems to have escaped.
"We did it!" Jessie cheers.
"Our plan is a success!" James says.
"An artistic success," Meowth says.
One of the Smeargle decides to leave a drip trail of yellow paint for their trainer to follow. Soon enough, Jack, Mew, and the others found it.
"A trail!" Jen says.
"It's the Smeargle! They've left a trail for us!" Jack says.
"Good. All we have to do is follow it," Mew says.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket has landed.
"There's no need to be afraid. We love art just like you do," Jessie says.
"We have paper, canvas, lots of art supplies. Everything you need to create masterpieces!" James says.
Meowth walks over and unleashes his claws, "Now get busy."
The Smeargle do so as Jessie laughs in triumph.
Jessie laughs, "This is gonna be the greatest and most artistic money making scheme in the history of Team Rocket. We'll simply have the Smeargle complete these canvases."
"Interesting," James says.
Suddenly Mew calls out, "Team Rocket!"
Jessie looks up and sees Mew and the others standing before her.
"Are you gonna let those Smeargle go free?!" Mew demands.
The Smeargle looks back.
"No way!" Jessie refuses.
And James says, "We're not in favor of THAT kind of artistic freedom!"
"Let's get em!" Meowth says.
Jessie throws her Pokeball, "I choose Arbok!"
And Arbok appears.
Mew calls out, "I choose Pikachu!"
Pikachu leaps into battle and they both face off just as the sun starts to rise, and the Smeargle take notice.
"It's the sun. The colors!" Jack says. Then calls out, "Smeargle!"
The Smeargle, knowing exactly what to do, run between Jessie's legs
Hey, wait!" Jessie calls out
Both Jack and the Smeargle run off.
"Let's go, guys!" Misty says.
"Come on, Pikachu!" Mew calls out.
Pikachu follows behind, leaving Team Rocket and Arbok confused.
"What are we gonna do?" Meowth asks.
"Let them go," Jessie says.
James, Meowth and Arbok are surprised at Jessie's suggestion.
"Don't worry. We've already go all of these uncompleted paintings. Maybe, maybe I can make them into something beautiful," Jessie says.
Back in town, the church bell begins to ring as the sun rises higher while the Smeargle get to work.
"Yes, you're getting it! The roof of the church! More red! And a little more yellow, too!" Jack says.
One Smeargle strokes the wall with some yellow paint
"And the brick path bathed in a fiery light!" Jack says.
One Smeargle runs with its tail leaving a red stroke along the wall.
"The walls! The walls still with the cold, blue shadows of the dawn!" Jack says.
One Smeargle makes a zig-zag stroke of blue on the wall as our heroes watch in amazement. Later, the Smeargle have finished painting, and it's a mural of Whitestone. All the townspeople wake woken up to see it, and stand amazed.
Jack happily cheers, "They're back! The colors I saw. They've all come back to me!"
Frank freaks out, No! Not that one! Get the super high definition digital camera! We gotta shoot that painting!"
"It's no use," The reporter says.
"I didn't think I'd ever live to see it, but there it is! Another great one!" Jack happily says. And says to his Pokemon, "You've done it. Thank you, Smeargle."
The Smergle happily says, "Smeargle (You're welcome)
The Smeargle and Jack embrace as the old artist gets tears in his eyes.
Jack: Thank you all. You've made me happy," Jack happily says.
Suddenly, it starts to rain.
"Rain," Misty says.
And soon, the painting is getting wet and falls off the wall.
Brock notices, "Look! The painting!"
It's disappearing!" Jen says.
Everyone seems upset, but Jack doesn't seem to mind.
"That's just fine. Just fine," Jack says.
The Smeargle agree. Later, the painting is all washed away and the wall is white once again.
"It's totally washed away!" Brock says.
"The painting was so beautiful," Misty says.
Then Mew has an idea, "I know! Maybe you can get the Smeargle to paint the same picture again."
"It wouldn't be the same, Mew. It couldn't be," Jack says. "You see, Mew. Each painting the Smeargle and I create is unique. I thought I'd lost my ability to create art, but now I know I can be inspired again. And maybe the Smeargle and I can paint once more!"
The Smeargle agree.
"You will, Jack," Mew says.
"The next one will be even better," Brock says.
"I just know it," Misty says.
"We know you can do it," Jen says.
"Yeah," Tomo says.
"And we wish you luck on it," Molly says.
"Thank you. We'll do our best," Jack says.
After that, Mew and her friends depart from Whitestone. They've just experienced first hand how people and Pokemon can work together to create interesting and beautiful works of art. Now they continue their journey with a new perspective on creativity and on caring.
Meanwhile, up in the skies, Jessie struggles to get an idea for a piece of artwork.
"I got an idea!" Jessie says.
"Tell us what it is, Jessie!" James says.
"Is it a million dollar idea?!" Meowth asks.
"Yes. If I cut up these Smeargle drawings and create a collage, I'll create an artistic masterpiece!" Jessie says.
"WOBBUFFET!" (Brilliant!) Wobbuffet pops out.
All the unfinished Smeargle drawings go flying into the breeze, shocking Team Rocket.
They soon say, "Back to the drawing board."
