Episode 112: Dueling Heroes

After the preliminary rounds, Mew and Misty are ready to compete in the Whirl Cup competition. And now, the opening Ceremony is taking place.

The announcement says, "Ladies and gentlemen, we now present our opening ceremony!"

The crowd roars. In the water stadium, all the trainers competing, including Misty and Mew are in boats as they listen to the announcement.

The announcement continues, "We welcome the many trainers who have survived their preliminary battles and strive to become Water Pokemon Alpha-Omega! Since ancient times, the Whirl Islands have been home to many different water Pokemon. The rituals associated with this great tradition are kept vital and alive to this day and are taught by Maya, the Sea Priestess!"

They soon see the priest who is wearing a white dress with a blue sash around her. She also has beautiful long purple hair, blue eyes, and holds a lovely staff with a blue orb on it.

"A Sea Priestess," Mew says.

"Wow. She's gorgeous," Misty asks.

Brock is love struck, "I've never seen such beauty!"

"We will now hear from Maya, who will give us her greeting!" The announcer adds.

Then Maya announces, "Welcome! Welcome to our friends, old and new, as we celebrate the battle for the Whirl Cup! We are most pleased to be able to share with you our love and appreciation of all water Pokémon, and at the same time, we are so very happy to include each and every one of you as true heroes of the sea! And may everyone here receive the ability to communicate with our water Pokémon brothers and sisters with this magnificent sea spirit!"

As the ceremony takes place, Team Rocket watches in the guise of snack vendors.

"Hey, James. Feast your eyes," Jessie says, and puts the binoculars in front of James' eyes, "On our next brilliant scheme."

"Someone's about to lose their marble," James says.

"Yous two can sure relate to dat," Meowth says.

"Wobbuffet!" (Sure can!) Wobbuffet replies.

"Shall we say it?" Jessie replies.

Team Rocket then says, "Team Rocket's gonna bring it home!"

"My own sea spirit!" Jessie happily says.

But James and Meowth say, "Hold it!"

Suddenly, someone asks, "Scuse me? One soda, please?"

"How about three?" Team Rocket says.

Maya continues, "And so, with our united purpose, I shall now invoke the sea spirit union!"

Maya puts the sea spirit before the light of the sun, causing it to glow blue as the glow radiates across the stadium.

"Wow," Mew says, amazed.

"Awesome," Misty says.

The glow soon fades.

"Sea spirit union?" Mew replies.

"Wasn't it great, Mew? She brought together the energy of all water Pokémon," Misty says.

And Maya announces, "And now, let the Whirl Cup begin!"

The crowd roars in excitement.

Then the announcer says, "The honored Water Pokémon Alpha-Omega will also receive a prized Mystic Water Pendant! Along with a Water Pokemon Egg."

Sitting on separate pillows is the Mystic Water Pendant, and the Pokemon Egg. The Pokemon Egg is blue, with small glowing yellow orbs circling around a large red orb in the center. It's also sitting in an incubator that is filled with water."

"How great," Misty says.

"Wow, that's cool," Mew says.

Later in the locker room, Brock says, "It says here in the guidebook that a Mystic Water Pendant can dramatically increase the power of a water Pokémon attack."

"Cool," Tomo says.

Then Mew turns to Misty, "Hey Misty, didn't you have one that looks like it?"

"I remember, and I really like to get another one, especially that Water Pokemon Egg," Misty says.

"Me too. Not only the winner get to be named Water Pokemon Alpha-Omega, and get a Mystic Water Pendant, but also get a new friend," Mew says.

"Yeah," Misty says.

Then Tomo asks, "What kind of Pokemon is in the egg?"

"Not sure, but they said it's a Water Type Pokemon," Mew says.

Then says, "But I've never seen an egg like that before."

"Me neither," Brock says.

"Well, we'll know what it is when it hatches," Jen says.

"That's right," Mew says.

She then says, "Still, I wonder which Water Pokemon I should choose. I have quite a bit."

"You're right. I have quite a few myself," Misty says.

"You have more Water Pokemon than I do," Mew says.

Then says, "If I remember, by the third round, we need to have two Water Pokemon."

"Yeah. This is going to be tough to make," Misty says.

"I'm sure we'll think of something as we take part in the competition," Mew says.

"Good idea," Misty says.

Meanwhile, an Azumaril fires a Bubble at a Wartortle, knocking it into the water.

The announcer says, "Azumaril is the winner in what's got to be the most exciting opening day ever!"

Up in the grandstands, Misty admires the Pokémon on display.

"And they didn't have to use Bubble Beam! Awesome!" Misty says, with glee.

Borck says, "Misty, I've never seen you this excited before. Don't worry about ignoring me, I'll just hang out with the others."

The others agree,

Then the announcer says, "Congratulations to the winner of battle five! Now, ladies and gentlemen, let's move along to battle number 6. Please give a warm welcome to trainers Mew and Christopher as they make their entrances!

Soon, both competitors are face to face.

"You can do it, Mew! Yeah!" Brock says.

The Pokemon shouts in excitement.

"She looks pretty psyched up," Brock says.

"And with all that training, I just know she'll win," Mew says.

At the battlefield, the Referee says, "You may each choose one Pokémon, the winner will be decided when his opponent is unable to continue the fight."

"The trainers must now decide which Pokémon is best suited for battle," The announcer says.

With that, Mew throws her Pokeball and calls out, "Go, Totodile!"

And with that, Totodile comes out.

"Mew has chosen her Totodile!" The announcer says.

Christopher holds a fishing rod "Check this out."

"Interesting, instead of putting a hook at the end of that fishing pole, he's using a Lure Ball instead," The announcer says.

Misty is very impressed, "No way! What a performer!"

Christopher calls out, "Go, Lure Ball!" And casts his Lure Ball into the water.

Under the water, the Pokemon is released. When it bursts to the surface, it's revealed to be a Kingdra.

"Christopher has chosen a Kingdra!" The announcer says.

"Kingdra, huh," Mew says.

She gets out her Pokedex and Dexter says, "Kingdra, the Dragon Pokémon, and the final evolved form of Horsea. A Water and Dragon formerly rests on the ocean floor. But in periods of high activity, even a simple yawn has enough power to create whirlpools.

"Wow. Sounds pretty strong. This is gonna be a great battle," Mew says.

"A water-dragon type right off, huh?" Brock says.

"But Totodile should have an easier time getting around than that Kingdra, since Totodile is amphibious," Misty says.

"That's true, Totodile's good on both land and water, but who knows what attacks they'll use?" Brock says.

The Pokemon begin cheering.

The referee then says, "Kingdra versus Totodile! Begin the match!"

"It's anyone's guess who will be victorious with those two battling Pokémon,"

"We gotta confuse Kingdra," Mew says, and calls out, "Underwater dive, let's go!"

Totodile dives underwater.

The announcer says, "Totodile starts with an underwater approach."

"Kingdra, Twister, now!" Christopher calls out.

Kingdra starts spinning around, creating a whirlpool.

"Kingdra responds by creating a gigantic whirlpool!" The announcer says.

Totodile is pulled in as the whirlpool turns into a water cyclone.

"It appears that Totodile has been overpowered and is completely helpless inside the swirling water!" The announcer says.

"Not good!" Brock says, shocked.

Misty calls out, "Totodile, be strong!"

"Totodile! Stay strong!" Mew calls out.

The announcer says, "It appears that Totodile can't seem to get into any position for a counterattack!"

Totodile starts bouncing along the rim of the cyclone, completely dizzy.

"You're okay, Totodile! Hang in there!" Mew calls out.

Totodile quickly snaps out of its dizziness.

"Very good, Kingdra!" Christopher says, "Let's back it off!"

Kingdra does so, causing Totodile to free-fall.

"Water Gun attack!" Christopher calls out.

Kingdra fires the attack.

Mew calls out, "Dodge it, Totodile!"

Totodile narrowly manages to do so and lands on one of the platforms.

"Alright, you're back!" Mew says.

"I see. Totodile's okay, huh?" Christopher says, "Well I've got another trick up my sleeve. Now, Hydro Pump, go!"

Kingdra fires the attack.

"Kingdra has launched its most powerful attack, Hydro Pump!" The announcer says.

Mew calls out, "Totodile, dodge the way you know how."

Totodile then mananges to dodge the attack.

Christopher is shocked, "What's going on?

"Totodile is dancing on top the Hydro Pump stream!" The announcer says.

"Great! Let's show em your Skull Bash!" Mew calls out.

Totodile darts in.

Christopher calls out, "Kingdra! Dive down underwater, now!"

Kingdra manages to evade while Totodile enters the water, as well.

The stage has been changed to an underwater battle." The announcer says.

Christopher calls out, "Kingdra! Now, Smokescreen!"

Kingdra launches the attack, blinding Totodile.

"Kingdra has cleverly used a Smokescreen attack underwater!" the announcer says.

Totdile then leaps out of the water and onto the platform.

"Now Totodile has jumped back out of the water and seems a bit confused as to the whereabouts of Kingdra!" The announcer says.

"I gotta figure out where that Kingdra's gonna come up," Mew says to herself.

Up in the grandstands… Team Rocket is seeing the battle.

"Aw. Dese are tough time for da twoip," Meowth says.

"Would you forget about that? We're so close," Jessie says.

"These hotdogs are yummy, aren't they?" James says, giving the food to the customers.

"How can you think of food when there's a sea spirit to steal?!" Jessie questions, angrily.

"But it's my job," James points out.

"Customer relations are important," Meowth says.

"You're both pathetic!" Jessie says, annoyed.

But then someone calls out, "Hey, lady! Any day with the popcorn!"

Coming!" Jessie happily says.

Back on the battlefield...

"The action has ground to a halt as we wonder who will make the next move," The announcer says.

"Gotta see it to figure out its next move," Mew says.

"This is great. The longer Kingdra stays under, the more nervous he's gonna get," Christopher says.

Totodile starts yawning.

"It's yawning. Looks like Totodile's pretty bored with the whole thing," The announcer says.

Totodile begins to dance around..

"Well, I guess you're right, Totodile, this is getting a bit boring," Mew says..

Then says, "But we'll be ready when Kingdra makes the next move

"You think so, Mew?" Christopher says, and calls out, "Come on out, Kingdra, and let's show em who's ready!"

Kingdra resurfaces right behind Totodile.

Announcer says, "It's Kingdra!"

Now, Hydro Pump, go!" Christopher calls out.

Kingdra prepares to fire.

Mew calls out, "Totodile, let's go!"

Totodile then uses Bite to stop the Hydro Pump from launching.

"Totodile just clogged up Kingdra's Hydro Pump!" The announcer says.

"Alright!" Mew says.

With Kingdra being unable to release the water, it swells to enormous proportions as a result

"Something strange is happening to Kingdra," The announcer says.

Christopher asks, shocked, "What's happening?!"

"Kingdra's blowing up," Misty says.

"Totodile's bitten Kingdra's mouth shut and all that water can't escape!" Brock says.

And soon, Kingdra is getting bigger and bigger.

Mew calls out, "Yeah! You can let it go now, Totodile."

Totodile releases its jaw and Kingdra goes flying across the stadium

The announcer says, "Unbelievable! Kingdra's Hydro Pump appears to have backfired in a big way!"

"Aw, Kingdra!" Christopher says, worried as his glasses drop.

Soon, Kingdra goes so high no one can see it, before it comes back down with a massive splash.

"That's that!" Mew says

Kingdra is shown to be knocked out.

The referee announces, "Kingdra is unable to battle! We have a winner! The match is awarded to Totodile!"

"Mew now moves on to the next round!" The announcer says.

"Alright! That's awesome! We did it!" Mew says.

Misty says in relief, "Phew. Well, that one got a little close, don't you think?"

"Yeah, but that was smart of them to do that," Tomo says.

Molly giggles, "Kingdra blown up like a balloon."

"I guess Totodile knew they could win and that probably helped Mew get through the rough spots," Brock says.

"It helped me through them, too," Misty says.

Meanwhile, at the concession stands, Team Rocket is seen, completely wiped out from working.

Announcer says, "And now, ladies and gentlemen, we now move into round seven!"

"I'm exhausted," Jessie says, tired.

James says, "No matter which way we turn, there's always someone there screaming at us for a snack."

"At least we toined all that grub into cash," Meowth says.

And James says, "Instead of slaving all day long for chump change, we should have stolen and sold that sea spirit for some serious money!"

"You're right. You're right. You're right," Meowth agrees.

But Jessie says, "There will be no sea spirit sale. Something as lovely as this should belong to a woman of equivalent beauty."

"What about the money?" James asks.

"Dat makes no sense!" Meowth says.

And Jessie yells at them, "Selling my treasure doesn't make sense! I've had enough of this pushing popcorn, so let's go get my sea spirit!"

"Wobbu!" (Agreed!) Wobbuffet says.

Just then, an employee walks over and says, "Hey, break's over, guys! We've got lots of hungry customers down at the main gate, so you three better get a move on. All the cotton candy you could eat."

"Now you're talking!" Team Rocket happily says.

Wobbuffet agrees, "Wobbu!" (And how!)

Later that night, Misty stares at the Colosseum from the window in her room at the Pokémon Center.

Mew walks over and asks, "Hey, Misty. Something wrong?"

"I can't sleep, that's all," Misty says.

"Are you worried about your match tomorrow?" Mew asks.

"Not really. I'm just so excited to be a part of all this," Misty says.

Mew smiles, and so does Misty.

The next day, it's day two of the competition.

The announcer says, "Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the second exciting day of the Whirl Cup competition! Today, we will be witnessing our next group of talented trainers and their Pokemon as they display their courage and teamwork on their way to fulfill their dream of winning the coveted title of Water Pokemon Alpha-Omega. Introducing our next two competitors, Misty versus Harrison, battling in the ninth match!"

As the announcer speaks, both trainers stare each other down.

Misty takes a deep breath and says, "So, here we go!"

"A piece of cake! No little girl is gonna get past this trainer!" Harrison says, and throws his Pokeball, "Go, Qwilfish, now!"

Qwilfish soon comes out of the Pokeball.

"A Qwilfish!" Jen says.

Mew takes out her Pokedex, and Dexter says, "Qwilfish, the Balloon Pokemon. A Water and Poison Type. The quills covering the entire body have evolved from scales. A Qwilfish can cause its body to swell in order to shoot its needles in all directions."

"Misty better be careful," Tomo says.

"Yeah. Qwilfish is also a Poison type, so it might know some Poison attacks," Mew says.

Misty then gets out her Lure Ball, gives it a kiss for luck.

She throws it and calls out, "Let's go, Corsola!"

And Corsola comes out.

The announcer says, "Harrison has chosen his Qwilfish and Misty will battle with her Corsola!"

"Ha! A Corsola! An unusual strategy using a water and rock Pokemon in a water Pokemon battle, so I best keep a sharp eye," Harrison says.

The referee says, "Qwilfish vs Corsola! Let the battle begin!"

"This match will be over before breakfast!" Harrison says with confidence.

And calls out, "Qwilfish, go! Water Gun attack!"

Qwilfish fires the attack.

"Ha! Just what I thought!" Misty says and calls out, "Corsola, Mirror Coat!"

Corsola uses Mirror Coat and it deflects the Water Gun.

Announcer says, "Corsola is blocking with a Mirror Coat!"

"Why didn't I think of that?" Harrison says, shocked.

"A reflected attack with twice the power!" The announcer adds.

The reflected attack lands as Qwilfish skids to a halt in front of Harrison.

Announcer says, "Qwilfish is a bit shaken, but still in the match!"

"Corsola, are you okay?" Misty asks.

Corsola jumps around to confirm it.

"Seems to me, that old guy knows a lot about Corsola," Brock says.

"What do you mean? Like how Corsola's both a rock and a water Pokemon?" Jen asks.

Brock says, "Yeah, even though Corsola's a water Pokemon, it could've gotten into a bit of trouble with that Water Gun attack that Qwilfish used. It's a good thing that Misty used Mirror Coat."

"Then Misty better be careful with this match," Mew says.

Harrison shouts, ""That does it! Qwilfish, let's show em your Pin Missile!"

Qwilfish starts sucking up water.

"What now?" Misty asks.

The announcer says, "Qwilfish is beginning to swallow water at an incredible rate! This might be the beginning of a Pin Missile attack!"

"Look at that!" Molly says, surprised.

Then Brock says, "In order for Qwilfish to launch all the pins on its body, it needs to inhale as much water as it can, which causes its body to expand like that. The bigger it blows up, the faster the speed of its pins! And now Misty won't be able to use a Mirror Coat because it's powerless against a Pin Missile!"

"Come on, Misty!" Tomo calls out.

"You can do it, Misty!" Misty calls out.

The Pokemon cheers.

The announcer says, "Qwilfish is continuing to expand! How much larger can it possibly grow?!"

As Maya watches on, Team Rocket hides nearby, ready to strike.

"Now's the time to get my sea spirit," Jessie says.

"But shouldn't we wait till our shift is over, Jess?" James asks.

But Jessie refuses, "No, I want it now!"

Team Rocket moves in and tries to steal the Sea Spirit, but Maya moves the Sea Spirit at the last moment before Officer Jenny shows up.

"What are you doing here?" Officer Jenny asks.

Team Rocket quickly panics, but brings out the snacks and drinks.

Jessie happily says, "We just thought the beautiful and talented Maya might care for a little caramel corn."

"Wobbuffet!" (That's right!) Wobbuffet says.

But Officer Jenny says, "Sorry, but this area's restricted to only Whirl Cup officials, so I'm afraid you'll just have to move along now."

"Aye aye, Officer," Team Rocket salutes.

Maya smiles and says, "It really was sweet of you to offer, thank you.

Jessie says, "Yes…"

Then James, "Your…"

"Highness?" Meowth adds.

Team Rocket quickly leaves as Qwilfish finally stops inhaling water.

"It looks like Qwilfish has finally taken on as much as it possibly can!" The announcer says.

"Alright, it's time to let em try on a Spike Cannon for size," Misty says, "Corsola, go!"

Corsola glows and fires the attack.

Harrison calls out the attack "Qwilfish, Pin Missile attack, now!"

The Pin Missile fires. The two attacks collide and explode in mid-air, knocking Corsola back

"No! Corsola!" Misty cries out.

Corsola has landed in the water, and shows to have received damages.

"Corsola appears to have taken some damage. Where's Qwilfish?" The announcer says.

The smoke clears as Qwilfish resurfaces unscathed.

"Ah! It avoided injury by diving underwater!" the

"It looks like her opponent's got the upperhand," Brock says. "But sometimes, the best defense move in a water battle, is not to be using any defensive moves at all."

"Okay, Corsola, hang on!" Misty says.

Then Harrison calls out, "Now, Qwilfish, Take Down!"

Qwilfish charges in and lands the attack.

"Qwilfish scores a Take Down direct hit!" The announcer says.

It shows that Corsola has taken a lot of damages.

"Is it over for Corsola?" The announcer asks.

Misty calls out, "Now, Corsola, Recover!"

Corsola does so.

"Corsola's using Recover to get back on track!" The announcer says.

"Ah, use Take Down again!" Harrison calls out.

Qwilfish charges as Corsola gets back in the fight.

"Now, up, Corsola!" Misty calls out.

"That's right, Corsola are unable to move immediately after using Recover!" The announcer says.

"Corsola, dodge it!" Misty calls out.

Qwilfish's attack hits and both it and Corsola dip into the water.

"That's all she wrote!" Harrison says.

But the pair resurface and Qwilfish is revealed to be stuck in Corsola's horns

"That's new," Brock and Tomo reply.

"Very new," Jen and Molly adds.

"I think that Qwilfish is really stuck," Mew says.

"It's caught in its horns," Misty says, dumbfounded.

Corsola starts swimming around the battlefield, trying to shake Qwilfish off.

"Talk about a twist of fate! After that Take Down attempt, Qwilfish has actually gotten stuck right in Corsola's horns!" The announcer says.

"No! Get out of there!" Harrison calls out.

"Are you okay, Corsola?" Misty asks, worried

Corsola stops as a brief silence occurs.

Then Misty says, "Well, then, Spike Cannon!"

Corsola starts glowing, causing Harrison to worry and the others to smile before the Spike Cannon at close range, sending Qwilfish sky-high.

The announcer says, "The power of Corsola's Spike Cannon has sent Qwilfish on a trip not soon to be forgotten!"

"Ah! No!" Harrison cries out

Qwilfish, clearly knocked out from the attack, falls back down with a splash.

We did it!" Misty cheers.

The referee says, "This match is over! Qwilfish is unable to battle, Corsola wins!"

Harrison drops to his knees, Why me?!"

"Yes! Yes! Yes! My sweet Corsola! I love you!" misty cheers.

Corsola starts celebrating.

Mew and the others cheer for Misty.

"That was close," Mew says in relief.

"Eevee," (Very close.) Eevee says.

"You know, the way Misty turned it all around in the end kinda reminds me of your battling style, don't you think?" Brock says.

I don't know about that," Mew says.

Soon, the announcer says, "Corsola is victorious! Misty will proceed to the second round!"

"That's right! Yeah! Watch out for, the second round!" Misty happily says.

"Pi Pikachu!" (Sweet victory!) Sparkle cheers.

"We now move on to battle ten!" The announcer says.

Team Rocket watches the competition.

"Guess dat sea spirit gave us da slip," Meowth says.

Jessie turns to the others, "Are you suggesting I'm giving up? When this beauty deserves that one?"

"Wobbu!" (They are!) Wobbuffet says.

": I think I'm a little unclear about this whole plan," James says.

Then someone calls out, "Hey, soda boy, could we get some drinks here?"

"Right away!" Team Rocket says.

Later that evening, at the Pokemon Center.

"Wow, today was something else," Mew says.

"I know, everyone had pretty incredible Pokemon," Misty says.

"And both of us won," Mew says.

Both trainers share a hand of sportsmanship and friendship.

"Good luck to each of us in the second round," Misty says.

Then Brock says, "Hmmm. It says in the guide book that opponents for tomorrow's match will be chosen by shuffling all of the winners from the first round.

Soon, all the competitors gather to see the tournament bracket.

"It looks like they've already put up tomorrow's match ups," Misty says.

Mew and the others walk over to the bracket to see who is battling who.

Misty says, "According to the bracket, I'm on the second match"

"And I'm on the fifteenth match," Mew says.

"According to the guidebook, it will continue in this match until the finals," Brock says.

"Well, looks like you and I will need to battle all the way to the finals," Mew says.

"Yeah," Misty says. Then turns to Mew, "And we'll be sure to face each other in the finals."

With the first round behind them, Mew and Misty will continue to battle to get into the finals. Will the girls be able to reach the finals and face each other? We'll have to wait and see as the Whirl Cup Competition continues.
