Episode 152: Better Eight Than Never
While in pursuit of Team Rocket and the stolen Blackthorn dragon fang, the gang were reunited with Mew's Charizard, who flew back from the Charicific Valley with their old friend, Liza. Meanwhile, Team Rocket's disastrous attempt to steal the treasured prayer flame only served to infuriate the Dragonite, who had recently been traveling with them, threatening the Holy Land and its inhabitants. But thanks to the able assistants of Charizard and Liza, Clair, Mew, and her friends were able to calm the raging Dragonite, preserving the Dragon's Holy Land along with all the Pokemon that live there. Now, after one interruption, the moment Mew has waited for is finally here! The battle for his eighth badge, and entry into the Johto League tournament!
Inside the gym, the battle is about to begin.
Kaburagi announces, The Blackthorn gym battle rematch between Mew of Pallet Town and gym leader Clair will now begin! Each trainer will use three Pokemon, as before. The battle is over when all of either trainer's Pokemon cannot continue, and only the challenger will be able to substitute one Pokemon for another!"
"So, are you ready for this, Mew?" Clair asks.
"Yeah!" Mew answers.
Kaburagi announces, "Let's begin!"
Clair says, "Kingdra, I choose you! Let's go!"
Soon, Kingdra comes out and into the water of the pool
"I knew you'd start with Kingdra!" Mew says.
"Well, sounds like Mew is ready for anything," Misty says.
Mew then calls out, "Snorlax, you're up!"
And with that, Snorlax comes out.
"Gee, Mew I didn't know you had a Snorlax.
"Yeah, I decided to switch out my Pokemon yesterday when I was at the Pokemon Center," Mew says.
"So my guess is Mew didn't feel like his regular team would be able to cut it going up against a dragon Pokemon," Brock says.
"That was a pretty smart move by Mew," Misty says.
Mew then calls out, "Snorlax, let's win this! Hyper Beam!"
Snorlax charges the attack.
Clair then calls out, "Kingdra, Agility!
Kingdra dashes forward just as Snorlax fires the attack. But when it tried to attack Snorlax with its snout, it bounced right off of Snoralx's body.
"Kingdra, Swift, let's go, now!" Clair calls out.
Kingdra then fires the next attack, but it bounces off of Snorlax's body.
"Snorlax." (Too bad.) Snorlax replies.
Neither Kingdra nor Clair can believe their eyes.
"Not working!" Clair says.
"Snorlax, Body Slam!" Mew calls out.
Snorlax closes in.
Clair calls out, "Agility!"
Kingdra evades just in time as Snorlax belly flops into the water. Again, Kingdra tries to attack, but Snorlax's body causes it to bounce off.
"Snorlax." (That tickles.) Snorlax replies.
"Yeah! Awesome! Way to go, Snorlax!" Mew cheers.
"All of our attacks aren't doing a thing! Its huge body is absorbing the blows!" Clair says.
Then Clair calls out, "Okay! Kingdra, Hydro Pump!"
Kingdra fires the attack.
Mew calls out, "Dodge it, now!"
Snorlax tries to evade, but the attack hits it in the face.
"Oh no!" Mew says, shocked.
Then Clair calls out, "Now, Kingdra, Hyper Beam!"
Kingdra charges the attack.
"Mew, watch out!" Brock cries out.
"Snorlax, dodge it!" Mew calls out.
The attack fires, and seemingly hits Snorlax.
"Snorlax!" Mew calls out.
Meanwhile, outside the gym….
"Charla!" Liza calls out, and runs up with a bowl of Pokemon food, "I'm sorry I'm so late, Charla. You must be starving by now, right?"
Charla confirms.
"Here. Dig in," Liza says as she puts down the bowl.
Charla soon eats.
The match between Mew and Clair has already started, so I have to hurry, but you relax and enjoy. I'll be back in a jiffy, okay?" Liza says.
Charla agrees and Liza runs off.
Back in the gym, the steam from the Hyper Beam hitting the water is fading and Snorlax is revealed to have survived by ducking underwater.
"That was some quick thinking, Snorlax!" Mew cheers.
"Diving into the water to dodge that Hyper Beam was great!" Misty says.
"Yeah. Quick defensive thinking," Brock says.
Mew then calls out, "Now, Snorlax, Body Slam it!"
Snorlax manages to land flat on top of Kingdra, but Kingdra manages to slip away near the bottom of the pool.
"Snorlax weighs an awful lot less underwater, in case you've forgotten your science, Mew," Clair says.
She then calls out, "Kingdra, Hydro Pump! When Snorlax comes up for air!"
"Well, Snorlax is gonna have to come out from underwater at some point," Brock says.
"Yeah, and it'll be right into one of Kingdra's Hydro Pumps," Misty says.
Then Mew calls out, "Snorlax, jump as hard as you can right out of that pool!"
Snorlax does so.
"Alright, Kingdra, now! Hydro Pump!" Clair calls out.
Kingdra fires the attack.
Mew calls out, "Now, just lean back!
Snorlax does so, avoiding the attack and amazing the audience.
"Wow! It didn't take any damage at all!" Tomo says.
"What an awesome move!" Jen says.
Clair calls out, "Kingdra, Swift attack!"
Kingdra fires the attack.
Mew calls out, "Snorlax, you can take this one!"
Snorlax lands, but the attack knocks it right into the pool.
"What?! Oh no!" Misty cries out.
"Mew has GOT to have something up her sleeve," Brock says.
"Yeah, I hope you're right, for poor Snorlax's sake," Misty says.
Clair calls out, "Kingdra, Hydro Pump, now!"
Kingdra fires the attack, hitting Snorlax in the face, but it barely feels a thing.
"Snorlax!" (Come on!) Snorlax calls out.
Kingdra is soon seen to be tiring out.
"That's it, Snorlax! Kingdra's really starting to get worn down, now!" Mew calls out.
Soon, Brock realizes, "Yes! Of course! Mew is using Snorlax's endurance! It'll finally just tire out its opponent!"
"You're right! As long as Snorlax keeps taking whatever Kingdra dishes out, Ash should be just fine!" Misty says.
"But that's not gonna happen!" Clair says and calls out. Kingdra, Hyper Beam!
Kingdra fires the attack as Snorlax dives underwater to avoid it, soon after, Snorlax resurfaces and Kingdra clearly seems to be very worn out.
"No! Kingdra!" Clair calls out.
Then Mew calls out, "Now, Snorlax, Ice Punch, go!"
Snorlax's right fist is soon covered with icy energy as it hits Kingdra right across the face. Kingdra tries to get up, but can't, and is soon knocked out.
Kaburagi announces, "Kingdra is unable to battle! And Snorlax wins!"
"Alright! You did it!" Mew cheers and runs up and hops on one of Snorlax's shoulders.
"An Ice Punch, huh?" Brock says, "That makes sense, seeing how dragon Pokémon have so much trouble against Ice attacks.
"What a relief. I was really feeling sorry for Snorlax," Misty replies."
Clari calls back Kingdra into the Pokeball, "Good work. You were great.
Liza soon comes in, "Brock, Misty, guys! Hi!"
"Hey! Liza!" Everyone replies.
"Is the battle still going on?" Liza asks.
Brock soon gets lovey dovey, "Until we're together, the battle goes on and on! My battle for your love will continue until your by my side forever! Liza, why don't we just stop this craziness and realize I'm a lover, not a fighter?
Misty grabs Brock by the ear, "Enough. I'm afraid the poor woman is suffering from battle fatigue."
"Then Jen says, "Anyway, Mew just won the first round with Snorlax."
"Wow! That was quick," Liza says.
Meanwhile, outside the gym, a certain trio is heard, Team Rocket, who are digging underground.
"Dig for treasure!" Jessie says.
Dig with pleasure!" James says.
Jessie and James say, "Prepare for trouble with our bag of tricks!"
Yeah!" Meowth says.
Jessie and James then say, "And make it double with a couple of picks!"
"Yeah!" Meowth says.
Jessie and James continue, "To protect the world from devastation!"
"Yeah!" Meowth says.
"To unite all peoples within our nation!" Jessie and James say.
Then all three cheer, "Team Rocket!"
And Wobuffet says, "WOBBUFFET!" (That is right!)
"I, for one, couldn't be happier!" James says, "We're finally stealing something other than that pesky little Pikachu for a change. Besides, I get to try out my new pickax!"
Then Jessie asks, "So, Meowth, how much further before we get to that Dragon Fang?"
"Ah! Allow me to peruse the map," Meowth says and gets out said map, "We started digging here, den we toined dis way, so da fang should be right dere!"
"Great!" James says.
"I can almost smell it!" Jessie says.
Meowth giggles sheepishly, "That was me."
One of the pickaxes strikes the roof of the tunnel, but water starts to leak out.
"Water?" James questions.
"Something doesn't feel right," Jessie says.
"Meowth, are you certain that you got the location correct?" James asks.
"Of course. My calculations are flawless, "Meowth says, and realizes something, "Uh oh"!
"So what do you mean by 'uh oh'?" Jessie asks, worried.
Meowth chuckles sheepishly, "It seems as though we're digging directly under da lake."
"What?!" Jessie and James exclaim.
Soon, more water comes pouring out, sending the three on a ride back the way they came.
Team Rocket cries out, "Team Rocket's all washed up again!"
Meanwhile, back in the gym…
Clair calls out her next Pokemon, "Clair: Now, Gyarados, go!"
Gyarados then comes out of the pool.
"Gyarados!" Molly says.
"Clair's not taking any chances this go round!" Brock says.
Liza then says, "I wonder if Mew is considering a substitute. That Gyarados is a more powerful opponent than her Kingdra."
Mew calls out, "Snorlax, are you up to battling with this Gyarados?"
"Snor!" (Sure!) Snorlax answers..
"Snorlax, Hyper Beam, go!" Mew calls out.
Snorlax fires the attack.
Clair calls out, "Gyarados, Hydro Pump, now!"
Gyarados fires the attack.
Both attacks collide with Hyper Beam, but Gyarados quickly overpowers Snorlax's attack.
"Oh no!" Mew says.
"It looks like Snorlax is tiring out, fast!" Brock says.
Clair launches the attack, Gyarados, now, let's finish up with Dragon Breath!"
Gyarados launches the attack.
Mew calls out, "Snorlax, use Hyper Beam!"
Snorlax tries, but can't charge it up fast enough as the Dragon Breath nails it.
"Snorlax! You gotta hang tough, so try Hyper Beam one more time!" Mew calls out.
But Snorlax can't pull it off.
"No. Snorlax," Mew says.
"This is awful! Snorlax, can't seem to move!" Misty says.
"Because Gyarados used Dragon Breath," Liza says.
"That's right," Brock says, "A head on Dragon Breath attack can paralyze the user's opponent!"
"Snorlax, try as hard as you can to move!" Mew says.
But Snorlax can barely move an inch.
Clair calls out, "Gyarados, Hyper Beam!"
Gyarados fires the attack and hits Snorlax's in the face, knocking it out.
Kaburagi announces, "Snorlax is unable to battle, and Gyarados wins!"
"Nicely done, Gyarados. Good work," Clair says to her Pokemon.
Then says to Mew, "So, I guess that evens up the score, wouldn't you say, Mew?"
Outside the gym, Charla is smelling her remaining food until the Wynaut from the day before steals it, but Charla is none the wiser.
Back inside the gym…
"Now, for my next battle," Mew says.
She then turns her head and calls out, "Are you ready, Pikachu?!"
Pikachu agrees and takes to the field.
"That's quite a matchup, Gyarados against Pikachu," Liza says.
"Like Azusa said, Gyarados is a water type, but it has flying type abilities also," Brock says.
"That's all very true, Brock. That means Pikachu should have two times the advantage due to electric attacks being strong against both water and flying types," Misty says.
"Of course, Clair's Gyarados is strong so Mew knows she'll need to be careful," Jen says.
Then Kaburagi announces, "Go!"
Mew calls out, "Now, let's go, Pikachu!"
Pikachu charges in.
Clair calls out, "Go, Gyarados, Hyper Beam!"
Gyarados fires the attack.
Mew calls out, "Pikachu, dodge it, with Quick Attack!"
Pikachu darts in past every Hyper Beam blast and nails Gyarados once close enough.
"Wow! That was fast!" Clair says, impressed.
"That's right, Clair! No one can beat my Pikachu when it comes to speed!" Mew says.
"Well, no matter," Clair says, and calls out, "Gyarados, Bite attack, let's go!"
Gyarados closes in.
"Pikachu, dodge it and use Thunderbolt!" Mew calls out.
Pikachu narrowly avoids Gyarados' steel-crushing jaws and launches his attack.
"Gyarados, use Dragon Breath!" Clair calls out.
Gyarados launches the attack and blocks the Thunderbolt from hitting Gyarados.
"Oh no!" Mew says, shocked.
"Wow! That Dragon Breath formed a barrier and the Thunderbolt can't get through!" Brock says.
Then Liza says, "Gyarados may be weak against electric attacks, but it doesn't really matter if the attacks are unable to reach it."
"Surprised, Mew?" Clair says, "I guess you're now figuring out that using simple electric attacks aren't going to defeat this Gyarados." Then calls out, "Gyarados, Hydro Pump!"
Gyarados fires the attack.
Mew calls out, "Pikachu, dodge!"
Pikachu tries to dodge, but ends up getting grazed by the attack.
"Are you okay, Pikachu?!" Mew calls out.
Pikachu tries to get up.
Clair calls out. Gyarados, let's finish this up!
Gyarados leaps out of the pool and wraps its body tightly around Pikachu.
"Pikachu!" Mew cries out.
"I didn't think Gyarados would come out of the water!" Jen says, shocked.
"Pikachu's speed won't help much, now," Brock says.
"That's right. This'll be the real test for Mew," Liza says.
"Pikachu, Thunderbolt attack!" Mew calls out.
Clair calls out, "Gyarados, move away from Pikachu!"
Gyarados let's Pikachu go, but ends up getting hit by Pikachu's Thunderbolt.
"Alright!" Brock cheers.
"That Thunderbolt hit its mark!" Misty says.
"We're not done!" Clair says, "Gyarados, Bite attack!"
Gyarados closes in.
"Here it comes! Dodge it, Pikachu!" Clair calls out.
Pikachu does so.
"Just keep up those Bite attacks, Gyarados, go!" Clair calls out.
Mew calls out, "Pikachu, dodge em all!"
Pikachu does so, but is quickly backed into the corner of the battlefield.
"Oh no!" Brock cries out.
"Pikachu's trapped!" Liza panics.
"I guess that's that," Clair says and calls out, "Gyarados, give em a Hydro Pump!"
Gyarados fires the attack.
Mew calls out, "Pikachu, Agility!"
Pikachu disappears and then reappears and starts running up the Hydro Pump itself, shocking Clair.
"That's the way, Pikachu! Now, Thunderbolt!" Mew calls out.
Pikachu runs right up to Gyarados' face and unleashes the attack, taking Gyarados out.
"No! Gyarados!" Clair cries out.
Kaburagi announces, "Gyarados is unable to battle! Pikachu wins!"
"We did it, Pikachu!" Mew cheers.
"Well, I never realized that Agility could be used that way. That was pretty impressive, Mew, but this match is not over yet," Clair says.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket is once again digging a tunnel, this time with the digging done by their latest mecha. Meanwhile, Team Rocket is chowing down.
"I love our new mail order mechanical Meowth mining machine, "Jessie says.
"It's great, but its name sure is a Meowth-ful," James says.
"And we can stuff our Meowths full while it's busy doing all da digging!" Meowth adds.
"Wobbuffet!" (Delicious!) Wobbuffet says.
Soon, the charm on the mecha's head starts blinking.
"Hey, look dere! Dat sensor is picking up signs of da dragon fang!" Meowth says.
The machine soon reaches the surface, right near where Charla is sleeping, and Team Rocket soon emerges.
"Okay, where are we?" Jessie asks.
Team Rocket soon approaches Charla.
"Wait, that's not the dragon fang," James says.
"Da robot musta goofed up," Meowth says.
"Wobbuffet!" (It sure did!) Wobbuffet replies.
"No, it didn't," Jessie says and opens Charla's mouth, "We asked for a dragon fang, that's what we got."
"Not the fang I had in mind," Jessie says.
Charla soon wakes up and sends Team Rocket flying with a Flamethrower.
"Not again! Looks like Team Rocket's blasting off!" Team Rocket cries out.
"Woooo!" (Help!) Wobbuffet cries out.
As Team Rocket flies off, their bag of food lands near some bushes where the Wynaut from the previous day takes it.
Back inside the gym….
Clair then calls out her third and last Pokemon, "Dragonair, go!"
And Dragonair comes out.
"I had a feeling she'd finish with Dragonair," Misty says.
"Yeah. Now if Mew can just defeat it, she'll win this!" Brock says.
"Are you ready, Pikachu?" Mew asks,
Pikachu." (I'm ready..)
Mew then calls out the first attack, "Okay, Thunderbolt, now!"
Pikachu launches the attack.
Clair calls out, "Quick, dodge it!"
Dragonair does so.
"Pikachu, keep up the Thunderbolt!" Mew calls out.
Pikachu does so, but Dragonair dodges every shot.
"Wonder what Mew is up to," Misty says.
"She should know that electric attacks have hardly any effect on dragon Pokemon at all," Liza says.
Soon, Dragonair is close to the ground.
"Now, Quick Attack, Pikachu!" Mew calls out.
Pikachu dashes forward.
"Oh! Mew is trying to get Dragonair to come lower to the ground!" Brock says.
Clair calls out, "Dragonair, dodge it and use Hyper Beam!"
Dragonair avoids in time.
"Watch out!" Mew calls out.
Dragonair fires the Hyper Beam and sends Pikachu flying.
"Pikachu!" Mew cries out.
Pikachu soon lands, but is knocked out.
Kaburagi announces, "Pikachu is unable to battle! Dragonair wins!"
"Poor Pikachu," Molly says.
"I feel bad for both of them," Misty says.
Mew picks up Pikachu, "Are you okay, buddy?"
Eevee also asks, "Eevee?" (Are you alright?)
"Pika," (Think so.)
"You did great. Take a nice long rest," Mew says.
"Pikachu," (Sure thing, pal.) Pikachu says.
"Great going, Dragonair," Clair says.
Mew hands Pikachu to Brock, "Hey, Brock. Take care of Pikachu for me?"
"Of course," Brock says, and takes Pikachu
"Now, Mew, this is your last round, so make it a good one!" Liza says.
"Right, I will!" Mew says.
She reaches to the battlefield, "Alright, my last Pokemon will be... Charizard, I choose you!"
And Charizard comes out.
Kaburagi pulls a switch and opens the ceiling, allowing both Pokemon some flying room.
Kaburagi announces, "And now, for the final match! Observe, the battlefield will now incorporate earth, wind and fire elements!"
Soon, the roof is completely open.
Kaburagi calls out, "Go!
Mew calls out, "Charizard, Flamethrower!"
Charizard fires.
"Underwater, Dragonair!" Clair calls out.
Dragonair sinks down under the water, while the Flamethrower hits the surface of the water and lowers the amount of water in the pool.
Clair calls out, "And now, use Hyper Beam attack!"
Dragonair surfaces and fires.
Mew calls out, "Dodge it, Charizard, and use Flamethrower!"
Charizard does so.
Clair calls out, "Dragonair, dodge it!"
Once again, Dragonair sinks into the pool while Charizard's Flamethrower evaporates some of the water.
Clair then calls out, "Okay, let's use Dragon Rage!
Dragonair manages to create a cyclone that hits and engulfs Charizard while it's airborne. Charizard soon lands after taking the hit.
"Stand up! I know you can, Charizard!" Mew calls out.
Charizard promptly does get up.
Mew then calls out, "Flamethrower, now!"
Charizard fires.
Clair calls out, "Dodge it, then Hyper Beam!"
The attack hits the water again, and Dragonair resurfaces and fires afterwards.
Mew calls out, "Charizard, knock it back with Fire Spin!"
Both attacks collide and cause an explosion.
"They're an even match when they battle on land," Misty says.
"Yeah, but Dragonair has got the advantage in water," Brock says.
"Right, that's a problem," Liza agrees.
Then Mew calls out, "Now, Flamethrower, again!"
Charizard closes in to attack range.
"Well, here we go again," Clair says, "Dragonair, underwater!"
Dragonair dives down.
"Now, Charizard, full power Fire Spin!" Mew calls out.
The attack strikes the water and evaporates it, to Clair's shock.
Misty notices, "The water in the pool!"
"That's what you call one smoking hot Fire Spin!" Brock says.
"Looks like Dragonair just lost a place to hide," Liza says.
Both Pokemon are soon airborne.
"Alright. Time to take it to the sky, Mew," Clair says.
"I was hoping you'd say that," Mew says, and calls out, "Charizard, Flamethrower!"
Charizard fires the attack.
Clair calls out, "Dragonair, Safeguard, now!
Dragonair's Safeguard manages to deflect the flames.
Misty says, "Look at Charizard's flame!"
"I guess Dragonair is still able to use Safeguard," Brock says.
Then Clair calls out, "Dragonair, Iron Tail!"
Dragonair launches the attack and lands right in Charizard's face.
"Charizard!" Mew calls out.
Clair calls out, "Once again, Iron Tail!"
Dragonair charges up another.
"Look out, Charizard!" Mew calls out.
Charizard promptly catches the attack.
"Great move! Now, Seismic Toss!" Mew calls out.
Charizard goes into the move and starts spinning around.
"Wow! Look at em go!" Misty says.
"If Charizard pulls off a Seismic Toss, it'll mean a whole lot of damage!" Liza says.
Then Clair calls out, "Okay, now, use Dragon Rage!"
A vortex quickly forms around both Pokemon and Charizard gets the worst of it once they land.
"Charizard," Mew calls out.
"Not even Charizard could hold off an attack like that one," Brock says.
"Great! Good job, Dragonair!" Clair says.
However, Clair is surprised when Charizard wakes up.
"Yeah! I knew you'd be able to come back from that one, Charizard," Mew says, "Okay, Clair, here we go again!"
Charizard gets back up with a roar.
Clair then calls out, "Go, Dragonair, Hyper Beam!"
Dragonair fires the attack
Mew calls out, "Dodge it and use Flamethrower!"
Charizard dodges and performs the attack.
Clair calls out, "Dodge it, then Iron Tail!"
Dragonair does so, but the attack is caught once more.
"Charizard, Seismic Toss once more!" Mew calls out.
Charizard goes back into position for the Seismic Toss.
"Look! Another Seismic Toss!" Brock says.
"Charizard!" Misty calls out.
Clair calls out, "Alright, then, Dragon Rage!"
Once more, Dragonair creates a vortex around both itself and Charizard.
Mew then calls out, "Charizard, Fire Spin timed right with the Dragon Rage!"
Charizard launches the attack, turning the vortex into a fiery tornado.
Clair cries out, "Dragonair!"
"That's it! Flaming Seismic Toss!" Mew calls out.
Charizard quickly dives downward and lands with a crash. Dragonair is soon seen to be knocked out and Charizard is the only Pokemon standing.
Kaburagi announces, "Dragonair is unable to battle! The winner is Mew from Pallet Town!
"Alright!" Mew cheers. She runs up and hugs Charizard, "We did it!"
Everyone celebrates for Mew's win.
Clair is seen in shock and disbelief, but soon smiles, "Dragonair, great work," and calls Dragonair back to the Pokeball.
"Mew, that was awesome!" Misty says.
"I'll admit, I was getting a little nervous there," Brock says.
"Mew really pulled it off!" Tomo says.
"Charizard, rules!" Jen says.
"That was amazing!" Molly says.
"That was a great battle," Liza says.
"Oh. Thanks, guys," Mew says.
Clair and Kaburagi approach.
"Well, Mew, that was a match I'll never forget," Clair says.
"I was most impressed," Kaburagi says.
"Thanks," Mew says.
"Here's your Rising badge," Clair says and hands the badge to Mew, "Proof of your victory at the Blackthorn gym."
The badge is black and red, and it's shaped like a dragon's face.
"Thanks!" Mew says.
Then happily says, "I've got my eighth badge!"
Later that evening, everyone bids farewell to Charizard, Charla and Liza.
Well, you guys, we really should be getting back home," Liza says.
"Great seeing you, Liza," Clair says.
"Thanks for everything, Charizard. You're the best," Mew says.
Charizard roars in thanks.
"See you later, Mew," Liza says.
Soon, all three of them take off.
"Take care! See you soon!" Liza calls out.
"Have a safe trip, Liza!" Kaburagi says.
Until we meet again!" Brock calls out.
Everyone waves goodbye to Liza, Charizard, and Clarla as they return home.
Now that Mew has earned her, she is finally qualified and can compete in the Johto League.
