The Calm Before IV ~ Family and Friends
Birds chirped outside as sunlight shined through the open blinds of the house. In the living room sat Raven, completely unaware of the warm caress of the sun upon her skin. She blew a strand of hair out of her face, her eyes narrowed in focus as a bead of sweat slid from her hairline down to her upper lip. Her head was pounding, but she'd become numb to that pain hours ago. She'd been sitting still for the past eight hours, trying desperately to strengthen the near microscopic connection she still had to Yang.
Raven hadn't eaten. She hadn't drunk anything since she'd begun either. She'd never had to try and manipulate her semblance like this before. There had never been a midway point between a severed link and a complete one. And Raven wasn't sure this was quite like that either, but it was the closest comparison she could make. She honestly felt blind. Raven had no idea what she was supposed to be doing here to strengthen her link. All she really knew was that she was doing something. The headache was proof of that.
She'd tried staring at a picture of her daughter. Then talking about her. Now she was thinking of Yang and focusing intently on the link itself. Each of her experiments had varying levels of success, but none like this. This was as close as Raven had come, but even this was nothing compared to her other links.
Raven exhaled loudly. She'd made progress, but she needed something more. Slowly, she stood. Her legs tingled with pins and needles, but she ignored that too. Child's play when compared to her headache. She just added the sensation to the dryness of her throat and the emptiness of her stomach. She swayed to the left before steadying herself. Raven only had one plan left. It was risky, she knew. Riskier than anything else she'd ever done in her life.
This, Raven knew, would be the death of her if she failed. It was assured. Raven had always feared death more than most. She never wanted to put herself in a position where she could meet her end. Every decision she made was calculated with her survivability in mind. This mindset had cost her nearly everything. Her brother, her best friend, her daughter… her husband. She'd lost her happiness to her fear, but not anymore. Losing Summer had crushed her. Losing Taiyang? It nearly destroyed her. She'd be damned if she lost Yang next.
"No more running…" Raven mumbled. With a shaking hand she gripped the hilt of her blade, took a deep breath, and then swung. The rift that opened up was a flickering mess, but Raven quickly grabbed the picture of Yang that had been resting at her feet and focused her thoughts on her child and the link. The rift flickered just a little bit less. Raven stepped in.
Yang bounced excitedly next to Naruto as he led her out of the hotel and onto the bustling streets of Konohagakure. Close behind them were Hinata and Weiss. Winter was not far behind, eyeing her sister and Naruto with a calculating eye. Yang wasn't worried about Winter's interference though… she had Cinder after all.
"Where are we going?" Weiss asked just as Cinder stepped out of the hotel entryway and glanced at Winter. Her eyes drifted over to Yang next, catching a look from the blonde. Cinder nodded her head.
"Figured I'd introduce Yang to some friends now that she's all good again. Some of my friends have asked about her when they stopped by to help me train these past few days," Naruto replied. Emerald, Sasuke, Sakura, Kakashi, and Tsunade were exiting the hotel now. Emerald was not involved, but the others were discussing who else might need to be taught the language of Remnant at an accelerated pace.
"While that sounds nice… I think I'd like to accompany Sasuke today instead… I am not much for crowds. I would appreciate it if you were there as well, Winter," said Cinder. Winter whipped around.
"What?" Winter asked.
"I'd like you to be there with me. I think we have a lot to talk about," Cinder replied, staring at Winter intently. Having known Amber before she was forced to share Cinder's body, Winter could understand that the other woman might be wanting to catch up. She certainly did. Her timing just wasn't to Winter's liking.
"But my sister…"
"Is with her friends, no? I'm sure she will fair just fine without your supervision," Cinder replied, throwing a smirk Winter's way. "She is not a baby, is she?" Cinder inquired, her smirk growing. Winter's cheeks went a little red and she huffed with as much dignity as she could muster. Amber's inside jokes had no place here.
"She most certainly is not! Fine, I shall join you on your outing, Cinder," Winter said before turning to her sister again. Weiss was staring at her, a delicate brow raised in question. A question Winter would not be supplying an answer for. "I will see you later, Weiss. Have fun. Be safe." Winter continued, giving her sister a brief but tight hug.
"I will," Weiss replied, looking between Winter and Cinder. She was slightly offended at being called a baby, but she felt like she was missing some sort of context. Had Winter and Cinder become such fast friends? Weiss dismissed the thought. She knew that couldn't be. They'd all been cooped up in that room for most of their time here in the elemental nations and she'd hardly seen the two women speak to one another. Cinder kept mostly to herself and Emerald—and oddly enough—sometimes Yang. Meanwhile, Winter had been hovering over Weiss. The younger Schnee could only assume Winter was trying to keep tabs on her. Though she was not entirely sure why, speculations aside.
"I'm pleased to see that you've reached an agreement. This is perfect for the plans we were just discussing. Kakashi, Sakura, and Sasuke will be escorting me to a meeting between myself and the other Kage. It would be beneficial if they could meet some of you for potential negotiations. Taking all the information currently available to me into consideration, Winter and Cinder would have been the best candidates," said Kakashi, translating for Tsunade.
"Wait, does that mean I won't get to see Gaara today?" Naruto asked.
"It's my understanding that Kankuro will be acting as his proxy today. He's training with Shukaku, I believe. And considering the upcoming battle, the Kage deemed this one-time proxy to be an acceptable allowance," Tsunade replied.
"What? Gaara gets to train but we don't?" Naruto whined. Tsunade promptly smacked him upside the head. He stumbled forward but was thankful she'd held back as much as she did. Getting tossed through a wall would have been embarrassing.
"You need your rest, brat. Gaara isn't under my control and frankly he's been pacing himself far better than the two of you have," Tsunade said.
"Heh… uh, I guess you're right." Naruto replied, scratching at his cheek.
"Of course I am. Now go see your friends." Tsunade said. Naruto, not wanting to somehow get hit by her again simply nodded and led his group away from the hotel. The streets were crowded, and everyone turned their heads when they walked by. Weiss was used to it, being somewhat of a celebrity herself. She could admit it was a little odd not being the one everyone was staring at for once though. Naruto took up that mantle.
His fellow villagers looked at him like he was a super star. The children wanted to play with him and many of them came up to ask as they were on their way. He explained why he couldn't stay and play, but then he'd make some shadow clones so as not to disappoint the kids. Teen girls watched him with doe eyes and longing sighs, though their faces always scrunched up when they noticed Yang glued to his side, his arm between her chest possessively.
Weiss did note that some of them paled once or twice though, she didn't catch on as to why until she caught Hinata staring at the girls on one occasion, her eyes narrowed and the skin around them looking rather veiny. Weiss quickly concluded that Hinata was not as sugary sweet as she'd initially thought. The adults greeted him with nothing but smiles and offers to come eat here, or shop there, or watch this play for free at their establishment.
"You're… really popular, whiskers," said Yang, Weiss couldn't help but agree.
"Yeah… it's kinda weird, 'ttebayo," Naruto replied.
"I know Hinata said they didn't like you, but I find it rather odd they didn't shower you with this much adoration before the war. You were trying to become Hokage all this time, were you not? Miss Senju seems to adore you too… one would think the villagers would have been attempting to curry your favor even before the war," said Weiss. She was promptly treated to witnessing the coldest look upon Hinata's face she'd seen from the timid girl yet.
"It is because he is a jinchuriki," said Hinata.
"What? But… he was doing a service to the village by housing the biju right?" Yang asked.
"And since he housed a demon, he must be one himself," Hinata spat. Yang's eyes blazed and Weiss could not help but make a comparison between Naruto and the faunus of Remnant.
"I mean… it's not that simple," said Naruto.
"It is to me," said Yang, "They only started showing you some care after you save them all? How could they?"
"I mean… it's complicated… Kurama kinda… attacked the village on the night I was born. There was so much death. And then he got sealed in me. All that fear… they hadn't been able to see me as anything more than his reincarnation after that," Naruto said.
"That's no excuse. The sealing arts are public knowledge. They chose to be willfully ignorant. That is not okay," Hinata replied. Weiss noted that the woman hadn't stuttered once since this topic came up.
"I guess… look, that's all the past now. I don't wanna hold this against everyone, Hinata. All the praise will take some getting used to, but I need to get used to it, right? I'll be Hokage one day, dattebayo! This would have been the norm then anyway!" Naruto grinned. Weiss watched Hinata blink. Then a smile formed slowly on her face, her cheeks dusted with red.
"I suppose you're right, Naruto-kun."
"I mean… if it's alright with you whiskers… but if one of them tries anything, I'm punching them in the face. Hard," said Yang.
"Please don't punch my fellow villagers, Yang," Naruto said. Yang pouted.
"No promises."
"Naruto?" Naruto turned looking past Hinata to see Shikamaru and Temari approaching them from his left. Shikamaru looked just as tired with everything as Naruto remembered and Temari had a little smirk playing on her lips as she saw Yang clinging to him.
"I admit, I didn't expect you to have a thing for blonds, Naruto," said Temari, her smirk growing as Naruto began to blush. Shikamaru rolled his eyes. Yang looked between Temari and Naruto, confused.
"What'd she say?" Yang asked. Naruto told her as Hinata greeted their friends.
"Temari, Shikamaru. How are the two of you?" Hinata asked.
"On a date?" Naruto questioned. He watched as the smallest hint of red colored Temari's own cheeks now and she looked at him a tad startled.
"I'm good. I was better before she dragged me away from my cloud watching," said Shikamaru.
"You needed to stop being so lazy for the day, Shikamaru. And since when did you tease about things like that?" Temari asked. Last she'd seen of him, Naruto was too oblivious to make that kind of joke.
"Wasn't me. Yang wanted to see your face," Naruto replied. Temari looked over at the smirking blonde next to him and grinned.
"Oh, I think I'm going to like her."
"She's multiplying… Troublesome," Shikamaru mumbled. Unfortunately, it wasn't silent enough. Temari turned on him swiftly and though she was smiling, Shikamaru knew better than to be fooled.
"What was that?"
"…Nothing," Shikamaru responded.
"That's what I thought. So, we've heard all sorts of things about our guests, but we've yet to meet them ourselves. Introduce us, Naruto," said Temari. Hinata hid a small smile at their antics behind her hand as Naruto did as he was asked.
"Right. Temari, Shikamaru this is a friend of mine from Remnant, Weiss Schnee. She's an heiress to a very important family over there. And this is Yang Xiao Long, my girlfriend."
"Nice to meet you," said Temari, her eyes flicking over to an unbothered Hinata. She may not have been around the Kenosha-inn all that often, but she was a smart and observant woman. She'd known of Hinata's crush on Naruto for some time now.
"Same," Shikamaru said. Naruto turned to his companions now and jutted a thumb out at Shikamaru.
"That lazy bones there is Shikamaru Nara. Don't bee fooled by his expression though, he's super smart. Next to him is his girlfriend Temari. She's the Kazekage's sister and pretty smart herself," Naruto said, letting the two Remnant natives know what Shikamaru and Temari had said.
"We're not dating, Naruto," Shikamaru said. Naruto's cheeks flamed as his little prank had been found out while he looked up at Shikamaru, startled. Temari was looking at him funnily too. The man himself was just smirking his way.
"You… wha…?"
"When did you learn their language, Shikamaru?" Hinata asked.
"Tsunade-sama had Sasuke teach me shortly after he taught you," he shrugged.
"Through the genjutsu?" Hinata asked.
"Nah. I didn't trust him."
"You learned our language this fluently in that short amount of time? Without any of Sasuke's hypnotism?" Weiss questioned incredulously. Shikamaru shrugged again.
"Not too different from our own language. Once you know the proper order of things," Shikamaru replied. Yang whistled from her place next to Naruto.
"You're right. He is super smart. You and Sasuke had to cheat to learn our language… he just… did it."
"Shikamaru." Shikamaru stiffened at the tone of Temari's voice.
"Yes…?"
"You've known their language all this time and didn't bother to introduce us yourself…?"
"It would have been—"
"Don't say it," Temari said.
"—troublesome," Shikamaru finished. Temari's eye twitched.
Cinder followed behind Sasuke as they made their way through the streets. Sakura walked next to him, and Cinder couldn't help but be slightly annoyed at that. How was she supposed to try making him uncomfortable if a woman he clearly cared about was right there?
"How disappointing…" Cinder mumbled.
"Hm?" Said Winter.
"Nothing. I was just thinking to myself. You have been hovering over Weiss for a while now. Why's that?" Cinder asked.
"She likes Naruto."
"Yes… I can see that. And?"
"I think she's considering a relationship with him. Though, I'm not sure how. I worry she may make a decision she will regret," Winter replied.
"You think she would attempt stealing him from her friend?"
"No… that's not in her character. Though, she has been making some changes lately, I do not believe that to be one of them. Weiss is above such things."
"Then what are you worried about?" Cinder inquired.
"Do Yang and Hinata seem a tad too close to you? And Naruto as well? That young lady was so uncomfortable around Yang when she first visited, but a single conversation later and they suddenly seem to have no issues. She doesn't even react when Yang kisses Naruto. Likewise, Yang seems to care very little that Hinata will be with them on their first outing as a couple together in the village," Winter responded.
Cinder could somewhat see her point, but it seemed a little far fetched to her. "I believe you're overthinking this. Weiss will be with them as well."
"Which is part of why this is so odd to me. Yang seems too comfortable with having two women she must know have feelings for her boyfriend around them. Something does not add up," Winter replied. Cinder hummed but didn't give any sort of reply after that. If Winter wanted to think that deeply on it, then there was nothing she could really do to help her friend short of spying on Yang. Ahead of them, Sasuke was suppressing a sigh. He couldn't help but wonder what Naruto was getting himself into now. He also idly wondered how many people would be devastated by his death now.
After Shikamaru got chewed out, Naruto invited them to come and grab a bite to eat with him and his companions. Since the two of them had been planning to stop by somewhere for food anyway, they agreed. The slightly larger group made their way through the village now, three of them knowing exactly where Naruto would be leading them. They couldn't fault him either. He hadn't been in the village for months and he'd devoted all his time to training since he got back. When he did eat, he was following a specially crafted meal plan courtesy of Tsunade and Sakura to maximize his energy intake so he could efficiently tackle the next day of work.
This would be the first taste of true Ichiraku ramen he'd had in a while. He barely restrained himself from just running off once he saw the familiar little ramen shop. Once they were close enough, Naruto moved the curtain out of the way and just as Teuchi was about to greet his newest customer his eyes widened and then he smiled brightly.
"Well look who finally came around. Ayame, come say hello!" Teuchi said. His daughter came from the back of the shop, asking her father what he wanted. Then her eyes landed on Naruto. He waved, and while she'd been stone still for a few seconds she soon blinked and came from around the counter to greet him with a hug.
"Naruto! You're okay. I was worried when you hadn't immediately come by after the war was over."
"Heh… sorry about that. Baa-Chan had me on a special diet."
"Well orders are orders, huh kid? You're here now and that's what matters. What can I get you?" Teuchi asked as Ayame came back around the counter. Naruto smiled wide.
"Four bowls of miso tonkotsu! Two for me and one for each of them," he replied, gesturing toward Yang and Weiss. Hinata, Shikamaru, and Temari ordered their own preferred flavors after him. Teuchi grinned, nodded, and got started. But not without saying one more thing.
"Who are your two new lady friends?" As Naruto and his group took seats at the counter another voice piped up near him.
"Yeah, Naruto. Introduce us?" Naruto's head whipped to the side, past Yang and Weiss. His eyes locked with the smiling visage of Iruka.
"Iruka-sensei! I didn't see you there. How've you been, ttebayo?" Naruto asked, excited at the prospect of introducing Yang and Weiss to so many important people to him.
"As well as I can be after the war. I'm happy though. Ayame and I started dating recently," Iruka replied. Naruto caught the blush that colored Ayame's cheeks at Iruka's declaration and the smile Teuchi tried to hide fooled none of the Shinobi.
"That's amazing! Congratulations, Iruka-sensei!" Naruto replied. Yang and Weiss, who were lost, asked Naruto what was going on. The distinctly different language caught the three not in the know off guard. Iruka, being a shinobi and close to Naruto had heard of their foreign visitors, but he'd never met them. He didn't know much more than that they knew Naruto either. The foreign language was a wonder to hear. Teuchi and Ayame, however, had no idea who these people were. Iruka hadn't wanted to spill any potentially secret information.
"Ah. Sorry. Yang, Weiss this man here was my old teacher in the academy before I became a shinobi on Kakashi-sensei's team, Iruka Umino. The two behind the counter are some really precious people to me. When nearly the entire village hated me, the two of them were probably the only reason I was kept fed. They're Teuchi and Ayame and this is their shop, Ichiraku Ramen. I was just congratulating Iruka because he and Ayame are dating now."
"Oh? Give them my well wishes then," said Weiss.
"Yeah, congrats to them!" Yang grinned.
"Iruka-sensei, Ayame, Teuchi these two ladies are Weiss Schnee and Yang Xiao Long. They're… well, they're not from this dimension to be honest," Naruto replied. As Teuchi and Ayame continued preparing their food, Naruto told them the tale of how he ended up in Remnant and met them. Though, he did leave out the reason for his fight with Sasuke. The three of them were particularly surprised to find out he was dating Yang too. Each of them eyed Hinata as discreetly as they could, though the heiress didn't show any discomfort at the statement.
"Well, it's our pleasure to meet them and give them their first serving of Ichiraku. It'll be on the house today since it's a special occasion," said Teuchi.
"Well… not technically their first serving. Remember when you told me that recipe? I wasn't sure I'd make it back home while I was in Remnant and… can you believe this… the place I ended up didn't sell any Ramen at all!" Naruto watched Ayame audibly gasp and Teuchi almost dropped the noodles. Shikamaru rolled his eyes and Hinata stifled a giggle as she translated for Yang and Weiss.
"Impossible…" Teuchi whispered.
"Right? But it's the truth. So, I went to the headmaster of the academy and got him to give the recipe to his kitchen staff. Didn't think you'd ever be able to get to Remnant, but I wanted to spread the flavor of Ichiraku across dimensions since you couldn't do it yourself. The students loved it!"
"You telling me a whole school of kids in another dimension got to taste my Ramen?" Teuchi asked.
"Not just them," said Weiss after Hinata translated, "It was such a success that many of our fellow students told their parents, and they requested an opportunity to taste it as well. Even some of the high society have taken a liking to it. Though many do wish there were other flavors aside from the one Naruto provided." Naruto quickly regurgitated Weiss's comment in his native tongue. Teuchi's eyes went wide as he approached Naruto with his bowls. Ayame followed with those for Yang and Weiss. Hinata, Temari, and Shikamaru received theirs from his assistants.
"Never would have thought I'd gain traction in another dimension of all places. Shame I can't be there to monetize on it," Teuchi said.
"Well, if we can potentially discover a way to make travel safe…" Weiss mumbled, trailing off as she considered their options. Hinata translated now that Naruto was slurping up his Ramen. Teuchi just gave a little shrug. He didn't want to worry over it too much unless such a method was actually discovered. The group descended into silence as they ate, at least until Naruto finished off his first bowl.
"So you got yourself a girlfriend… how exactly did that come about?" Iruka asked. Naruto's cheeks flushed as he set his bowl down.
"Well… she kinda just… kissed me one day. I'd been avoiding starting anything with her because I knew we'd have to get back home. I didn't wanna hurt anyone, y'know? But after that I guess I just decided I should try and be happy while I could. I learned during the war that life was too short to double guess myself on somethin' like that," Naruto replied. Iruka gave a slow nod, unsurprised that his old student had matured because of the war.
"Funny. Gaara's been feeling the same way. There's this one girl in the village who's been pining after him for years now. I wonder sometimes if he'll give her a chance once we get back to Suna," Temari said.
"Oh yeah. Where is Gaara anyway? I wanted to introduce him to Yang and Weiss," said Naruto.
"Training ground four," she replied.
Ruby sat with Blake in the forest near her home. Pyrrha and Jayne were in the city. The two were on a date now that the red head had finally properly confessed to him. Coming as close to death as they had with Salem and bearing witness to the deaths that followed had made the girl realize she didn't want to lose her chance with Jaune. It wasn't just other girls she had to compete with for his affections. Their profession itself was an oppressive force in its own right.
Neither of the remaining members of RWBY knew where Nora and Ren were. Blake was sure they'd be alright, though. She'd always though there was something about them that screamed survival. Instead, Blake's worries as of late had all been focused on Ruby. The girl was a far cry from her former self. There was a distinct lack of brightness whenever she looked into Ruby's eyes.
The other girl had been training harder than ever. Every day she went off into the woods early in the morning and didn't return until late. When Qrow was here he did hat he could to keep her grounded, but with him off meeting Ironwood she'd taken her clear opportunity.
The only reason she wasn't swinging Crescent Rose right now was because Blake had asked her to sit and talk. Neither of them had said anything for the past five minutes. Blake wanted to say something, but she didn't know where to begin. Every time she opened her mouth, she struggled to find her words.
"If you have nothing to say I'm going to get back to my training Blake," said Ruby as she moved to stand. Blake grabbed hold of her hand.
"Wait! I… Ruby. I'm worried about you."
"Isn't everyone these days?" Ruby replied, rolling her eyes.
"For good reason! Ruby, you hardly sleep. You're not eating enough. You only train, and train, and train!"
"Well how else am I supposed to kill Salem!?" Ruby shouted back.
"Kill? Ruby you can't—"
"I hurt her, Blake! I hurt her and she didn't just heal right away. It was like I turned her arms to stone! I can do it! I can kill her!"
"Ruby listen to yourself! You're talking about killing like you've done it before. That's not a path you want to go down, Ruby! You'll ruin yourself." Blake could see it already. Ruby walking down a route she'd seen Adam walk just years earlier. So wronged and hurt that he grew to loathe the humans, he stepped willingly into the darkness. Embraced it. And Ruby was close to doing the same.
Could Blake stop her? She was afraid she couldn't. Ruby would be just like Adam and Blake would just have to watch it all play out again.
"She tortured my mother to death and killed my father! She mutilated Yang! She killed Ozpin and creates the grimm! Look at all the heartache she causes! She must die! And I can do it. I can make her regret ever coming near my family. I can make her suffer!" Ruby replied.
"Ruby… I understand you're in pain. I understand you want her to hurt as much as you are… but if you do this you won't be any better than Salem is…"
"What…? How could you compare us!?"
"Because she wants her enemies to suffer. She wants them to hurt. Why would she have told you about your mother otherwise? Think about what kind of things you would have to do to make her suffer. The kind of person you would become. There's no turning back from that Ruby!"
"Then what am I supposed to do? I hurts so much, Blake. I just want Yang! I want my dad!" Ruby was crying now. And Blake was too. All the older girl could do was move forward and wrap her leader up in her arms, letting Ruby cry into her shoulder. As Ruby's wails filled the forest, Blake wished she had an answer for her.
As Naruto led the way to training ground four, Weiss followed behind him as he chatted with his friends and Hinata. Spending the day with him and his friends had been fun. She'd enjoyed meeting so many important people to him. The care they showed for him was visible to her.
Watching him interact it's his two girlfriends had been… interesting, too. He'd treated them well and though he couldn't be open about dating Hinata, Weiss had seen the moments between them. A bit of reassuring eye contact here, a small touch of her hand when no one was looking there. Despite their situation he tried to make her feel as wanted as he could. And Yang never batted an eye, despite Weiss knowing she'd seen many of their moments as well.
"Are you okay, Weiss?" Yang asked.
"Yes. Just… thinking."
"About?"
"How Naruto treated the two of you today. He made sure neither of you were ever away from his side. And all the praise he showered you with when he was speaking to Teuchi and the others after we finished eating. I can't say I would have been able to keep my cool in Hinata's place," Weiss replied.
"Yeah, she's a tough one. Maybe it's a shinobi thing. Or a clan heiress thing," said Yang.
"And you're sure you still want to go through with this?" Weiss asked.
"It'll be fine… Besides, I think today's showing me that Naruto will be an amazing boyfriend to us," Yang replied. Weiss looked back at the man leading them through the village and saw Hinata looking at him with adoration written all over her face.
"You might be right…"

That's the chapter. A longer one and the end of the Calm Before arc, I suppose. We jump back into the action next chapter. In the meantime, how will Ruby's downward spiral end, you think? And What exactly will happen to Raven. I've mostly solidified Yang's, Naruto's, and Hinata's relationship so the focus will now be fully on Weiss. So that'll be interesting. I'll see you guys again with the next chapter before the end of June. Enjoy!
