So OK...In this chapter I reveal the reason for Lady Gloria's fear and hatred of Humanimals but more than that reveal some thing's about her father and Edward's Grandfather, I'm going to try to be very delicate about what was essentually a 'Faustian Bargain' kind of similar to the Tengu Shredder in Season 5 of TMNT but I do believe there was an understandable if not sympathetic reason why the Old King did what he did, because in Wrangler Society all history is to be kept secret to all but a few elites and most everybody is to be kept in total ignorance of the Past to the Old King the fact he was a King didn't mean much if no one was going to remember him so basically another way of showing Wrangler Society brings out the worst in people, showing it's not only Humanimals who suffer, only Humanity as a whole matters individuals can be used and disgarded at will.
As Marzipan and Emma went down the twisting paths to the hidden and forgotten places in the underground, places that had been built by the Original Wrangler Settlers for some purpose but as Wrangler Society discourages remembering the past and prefers Humans to simply pursue idle pleasures and to think as little as possible, these places were taken by fugitive Humanimals as places of refuge.
"So..." Emma said realizing since she had spoken to her older sister since she was in kindergarten that they didn't have a lot to talk about. "...Did Uncle Gus tell you about this Tomcat..."
"Yes!" Marzipan said exasperated "...He told me he wanted to introduce me to this Tomcat and I informed him I was already spoken for!"
"Oh!" Emma said surprised "Fancy that! The Kitten who thought falling in love was yucky and said she would never jump when a Tom called, that's one of the few things I remember about you."
"Yeah, well.." Marzipan huffed "...People can change a lot in seven years, danger can make you realize, you can't always go it alone and you need others."
Now immensly curious, Emma purred/trilled "So...Who's the lucky Tomcat?"
And Marzipan froze...She still didn't know how to tell she had fallen in love with not just a human but the son of two notorious criminals, but as they jumped down while she was still stuttering tongue tied, she was greeted by several dozen Humanimal voices yelling "SURPRISE!" Causing her to floof up! They knew she was coming and so they welcomed her like it was a surprise birthday party!
Meanwhile in the Palace, Edward and Minsk had gotten several 'keys' that was the euphamisim they were various things Edward didn't want to reveal the truth of, Minsk feared they were 'keys' to weapons that could be used against the Humanimals.
As they went through one of the halls, dim lights began to illumenate, the power was slowly returning they had to move quickly, however Minsk noticed one of the paintings on the walls she couldn't have when it was pitch black, it was a beautiful oil painting depicting a horrific scene!
Edward not wanting her to see that thing urged her to continiue following him back to the secret passage.
"But please!" Minsk pleaded "Can you at least tell me what this is?"
Edward sighed "It...Is a scene my Mother wittnessed when she was only five years old, that scene, is what she saw peeping through the keyhole of the closest her Mother shoved her and her sister into during the last Humanimal Slave Riot."
"Her Mother was killed by a Humanimal..." Minsk said quietly "...So that's why she hates us..."
Minsk stared at the red and black painting "And this is ecactly what she saw?"
"That's what she told me." Edward said "She said she described her memories to the painter she commissioned to paint that picture."
Minsk's nocturnal eyes was able to see the painting in the dim light as well as if it were daylight. She could see the Mother and Father were in silhouette, the mother seemed to being torn in half! Something was slashing across her waist, the edge of a large silhouette could be seen above her head, hinting whatever Humanimal it was was larger than her.
"I think it was a bear." Minsk said
"Huh?" Edward said
"I think it was a Bear that killed your Grandmother," Minsk said the fact it seem to something slashing her across her waist is probably and Bear Humanimal slashing with his or her giant claws, and...I think deep down your Mother knows this I've realized from the various scents I've picked up here, I've smelled no Bear scents in the Palace, and your yourself remember her giving you advice that Felines of all kinds are actually less dangerous because they tend not to hold grudges, 'They're too lazy to hold grudges' or their laziness compells them to be content with 'living well is the best revenge' but you said she told you both Bears and Elephants will wait for years before repaying a slight."
And all this talk was causing Edward to become very nervous because he remembered things he had heard as a child, stories the common people told about his Grandfather who died shortly before he was born, whispers he heard from those old enough to remember the rumor that his Grandfather had made a pact with an evil spirit, that he would never die as long as he continued to...'Do something' and the common people spoke of rumors that when Humanimals killed his Grandmother that was the first step in taking away the source of the Old King's Power and during his Mother's trip to Earth and during her marriage to Edward Nygma, he kicked the bucket thus Lady Gloria ascended the throne upon her return and Edward remembered his fitful adolesant nights awake in bed worrying if he had the blood of demons in his veins...
"Minsk..." He said quietly taking his wife by the hand "...There's something I need to tell you..."
I remember catching a brief glimpse of some animal show on TV where the guy who trained animals said big cats don't hold grudges but bears do, really stuck with me, that the animal that's more likely to be seen as friendly and jolly is actually the more dangerous one
