*I'm not a doctor, but I'll try my best to get the medical terminology as accurate as I can, but I'm also not gonna spend too much time on the medical side either*
[Notes]: First of all yes Gemma and Nero had their pagers on them I just didn't mention it in the first chapter. Secondly I've decided to use Gemma's cell phone and house address that's already established in canon for this story, but I might end up changing that later on. In addition I know in canon it was mentioned by Gemma herself she hated school, but I considered her pretty smart so I could see her acing her MCAT's or at least getting a very high score on them to get into a residency program despite the fact academics and school wasn't her strong suit. Finally I forgot to add this little tidbit to the authors notes in chapter 1, so I'm doing it now; this story will NOT have the drunken one night stand Gemma/Nero had in canon because I hated it and hate the trope in general. That all said I don't know if I can do longer the chapters for this story because I'm discovering it's a lot harder to do because of this different setting and their relationship being slow burn this time around which I'm not used writing just yet, but I'm going to try my best, but no promises. I'm going add in some text messages, Nero's will be in bold italic while Gemma's will be in italics. Also both Gemma and Nero's thoughts will be in italics as well.

Previously On The Pediatrician And Cardiologist:
20 Minutes Later: 10:15am:
The two are done eating leaving all of their empty plates and everything on their trays suddenly Gemma grabs her pen and note pad from the front pocket of her lab coat slapping the notepad down onto the table Gemma leaned down jotting her number and address for Nero after a few seconds she tears off the piece of paper handing it to him "You take care...Nero" she said, getting up from the table grabbing her tray and walking away throwing her garbage into the can putting the tray back and walking out of the cafeteria as Nero watches her once she's out of sight of him he looked down at the piece of she gave him, it's her number and address, he smiles wickedly folding the paper up placing it into his pocket leaning back into the chair.
Chapter 2: Getting Closer
Once leaving the cafeteria Gemma heads straight into the locker room opening her locker placing her lab coat inside on the hanger sighing heavily she leans her head down looking at her pager clipped to her scrubs hoping it won't go off just as she about to leave for the day.
"God, please don't you..." she whispered desperately to herself while grabbing her coat and purse taking off her stethoscope placing it into her locker.
It doesn't go off a sigh of relief washes over Gemma shutting the door walking out of the locker room.
She headed out of the hospital exhausted to her car opening the drivers door getting inside buckling up taking her keys out of her purse starting it up pulling out of the parking lot going home.
Meanwhile back in the cafeteria Nero stands up grabbing his tray walking over to the garbage can throwing all the trash away putting the tray back and walked out
Walking down the long hallway he rubs his eyes tiredly sighing he walks to the lounge door pushing it open going inside once there he sits down on the couch to relax a bit eventually falling asleep.
An Hour Later: 11:30am
"Beeeep!, Beeep!, Beeep!" the loud sound of his pager awakens Nero, instantly bolting him from the couch.
"Oh!" he sat up rubbing his eyes of sleep looking down at the number standing up he runs out of the room racing up the stairs to the Cardiology Unit
"What happened?" he asked, out of the breath
"Your patient's crashing" the doctor stated, looking up at him
"Damn" he whispered "Get the crash cart, paddles and pads" he instructed running over to the patient
"Come on!" he shouted loudly, the nurse slapped the pads onto the patients body while Nero grabbing the paddles placing them onto the patients chest
"Charge to 100" he instructed
The nurse pressed the button charging the defibrillator
"And clear" Nero pressed the paddles onto his patients chest looking up at the monitor
"Still in V-fib" the nurse announced
"Charge to 150" Nero instructed
"Still asystole" he stated, sighing
They shocked the patient again at 200 "Still flat lined" Nero sighed, looking at the monitor
After a half hour Nero throwing the paddles down into the cart "Let's call it" he announced "Time of death..." he looked over at the clock on the wall "11:30am" he sighs again walking out of the O.R. sadly.
Once back downstairs he walked to the locker room going inside and to his locker opening it quickly grabbing his stuff leaving his stethoscope inside slamming the door shut walking out of the hospital and to his car getting in shutting the door and headed home.
Meanwhile Gemma has just arrived home looking through her mail that has collected in the mailbox over the past day "Hmm" she whispered throwing everything into the counter along with her purse, pager and her phone sighing tiredly, but at the same time wondering what a certain Cardiologist is doing right now.
She grabbed her purse opening it taking out her cigarettes and lighter taking one out of the pack lighting it up inhaling the smoke into her lungs then exhaling the smoke into the air walking over to the bottles of wine she opens the cabinet grabbing a wine glass grabbing one of the bottles of wine opening it and pouring some into the glass instantly drinking it all in one gulp she continues drinking and smoking for quite awhile.
Back on the road Nero is feeling the effects of being tired now "Shit" he mumbled to himself, after a few seconds pulling into the driveway and parking he shuts off the ignition grabbing the keys getting out of his car shutting the door going up to his door opening it going inside closing and locking it throwing his keys down on the counter yawning and rubbing his eyes, but also wondering what a certain pediatrician is doing.
At Gemma's she has stopped drinking putting the glass into the sink walking over to her couch stumbling a bit as she's a bit tipsy. "Mm" she sat down with her second cigarette smoking the rest of it then stubbing out the rest into the astray on the table with that she closed her eyes laying down eventually passing out.
Hours Later: 5pm
Gemma's eyes slowly flutter open groaning getting up from the couch holding her head feeling a headache coming on she walks into the kitchen looking around
"Damn" she whispered to herself a bit disoriented
Going over to the counter she grabs a glass from the cabinet pouring water into it from the sink putting the glass down for a moment walking into her bathroom opening the medicine cabinet she grabbed the bottle of aspirin opening it taking out two closing the bottle and putting it back and walking back into the kitchen to her glass of water drinking it titling her head back swallowing the pills down.
Back at Nero's place he has been watching a little TV staring at his phone wanting to call Gemma, but isn't sure he should.
Yawning again he lays down on his couch the remote in hand eventually falling asleep himself
Minutes later the ringing of his phone jars him from sleep groaning a bit he gets up going into the kitchen grabbing his phone flipping it up putting the receiver to his ear
"Hello?" he answered, sleepily
"Hey, did I wake you I can-" the voice spoke
"No, no, I'm uh glad you called..wait how did you get my number?" he asked
"I have my ways" she said, simply, but in a bit of a flirtatious tone
"Okay well now you have it in case you need anything" he said, trustingly
"You alright? You sound a bit off" he asked, concerned
"I guess, I'm a bit tipsy right now, but I took some aspirin" she answered back
"You need to slow down with that" he warned
"You telling me what to do now?" she asked, a bit offended
"No, I know what happens with that" he pointed out
"Good, we understand each other then" she said, sighing
"I have the day off tomorrow you want to hang out at my place?" she asked
"I can order pizza and we can watching a movie" she suggested
"Sure, I have a day off tomorrow too" he said, smiling which she couldn't see
"Great...and Nero I was thinking about you, too" she let him know
"I'll come over about 6 okay" he said
"Okay" she said
"I'm gonna go lay down I have a headache" she complained
"Aw, I'm sorry, I wish I was there with you to help and take the pain away" he said, somberly
"I wish you were here, too" she whispered
"Nero..." Gemma spoke after a beat
"Yeah?" he asked
"I..." she starts speaking
"What is it, Gemma?" he asked, a bit concerned
"Nothing, um I'll see you tomorrow okay" she said. Changing the subject
"Okay, see you then, bye" he said
There's silence on both ends neither has hung up yet
"Gem, you still there?" he asked
"Yeah" she said
"Are you?" she asked back
"Yeah" he said, chuckling
"Are you gonna hang up?" he asked
"Yeah" she said, still not hanging up
"Gem?" he asked
"Okay, okay I'm hanging up now, bye" she finally flips her phone closed hanging up putting it down on the counter
Once hearing the phone click off he hangs up himself closing his phone throwing it down onto his counter
The Next Day Morning – Gemma's House 7am
Gemma is already awake, having a light breakfast and her coffee sitting down at the table wondering why she's so nervous, anxious, but yet excited and at the same time trying to ignore the increasing butterflies in her stomach.
Nero's House - 7am
He had a rough night so he's still asleep, but after an half hour Nero's eyes slowly open blinking a few times he sits up in the bed rubbing his eyes of sleep and stretches
Gemma's House – 7:30am
After having breakfast Gemma gets up from her chair grabbing her plate and empty coffee cup placing everything in the dishwasher and goes into her room to grab her pills from on top of her dresser bringing them into the kitchen with her setting them down on the counter she opens the cupboard grabbing a glass and getting the juice from inside the fridge opening the container pouring some into the glass closing it putting it away closing the door again.
Opening up the pill bottle she takes out one popping into her mouth grabbing the juice drinking some titling her head back swallowing it groaning as it goes down her throat bitterly placing her hand onto her stomach.
"God" she whispered, scoffing quickly drinking the last little bit of juice in the glass putting it into the dishwasher.
Nero's House – Around The Same Time 7:35am
Nero is now up and making a bagel for breakfast and some coffee as well. Some minutes later he's done with breakfast and almost all of his coffee standing up he goes to his bedroom grabbing his heart medicine bringing it into the kitchen opening the bottle he grabs one pill putting into his mouth reaching for his coffee drinking the rest of it titling his head swallowing it.
"Ugh" he groaned, closing the pill bottle putting it back onto the counter
After awhile Nero cleans up his kitchen, spraying the counters with some disinfectant cleaner wiping everything down making it sanitary inside his stomach is flip flopping with excitement mixed with a bit of nervousness as he waits anxiously for his time tonight with Gemma.
Gemma's House – 9am
Gemma's now dressed for the day and is watching a little TV on the couch while knitting trying to relieve her anxiety about her date with Nero tonight, but it's not really helping much.
She sighs, throwing down her knitting onto the couch in a frustrated huff "What the hell am I going to do with myself for 9 hours?" She emphasized asking herself.
After thinking a bit she decided to start her house to get it ready for tonight. Grabbing some trash bags she begins by throwing all the garbage away hoping she can get everything done before 6.
As she's cleaning her phone chimes letting her know she has a text message, sighing breathlessly she put the bag down running over to her phone picking it looking down at it: 1 New Message appears on the screen.
Flipping it up she goes into her messages looking for the newest one quickly finding it at the top her finger taps it and she starts reading it, it's from Nero.
Hey, I'm so excited and nervous about tonight, but I can't wait to see you and hang out again, how about you? The message read
Gemma stared down at the message for what seemed like hours, but really it's only been a few seconds thinking Shit, he's feeling the same way I'm Taking a deep breath she starts typing a message
I'm feeling the same way she sent back to him
Really? He sent
Yeah she sent back
What are you doing? He asked, sending the message
I'm cleaning my house for tonight she sent back
Ooh okay well see you tonight he sends along with a heart emoji
Yeah...tonight she sends back also with the heart emoji
She flips her phone closed setting it back down onto the counter and goes back to cleaning while Nero reads her last message smiling placing his phone back where it was before.
Six Hours Later: – Gemma's House 3pm
Gemma's house is finally spotlessly clean and Gemma herself is exhausted, walking over to the couch she plops down onto it breathing heavily
"Damn!" she breathed, wiping the bit of sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand
She picks up her knitting needle and starts on her project once again to try and pass the remaining time
Meanwhile back at Nero's he's in the shower getting cleaned up after an hour he's out drying himself off and putting on some causal clothes for now after getting dressed he walks into the kitchen to grab a late lunch and something to hold him over until dinner at Gemma's he decides on a salad.
While she's knitting Gemma's stomach rumbles sighing she sets down her knitting needle getting up from the couch she walks into her kitchen over to the fridge opening it looking inside to see if she's got anything in there to eat.
She groans as nothing looks all that great to her shutting the door she turns around looking over at the fruit basket on the table
"Hmm" she exhales sharply walking over to the table grabbing an apple and banana from the basket and goes back to the couch and sat down to eat her fruit.
Thirty minutes later she's done with her banana and apple and goes back to her knitting to try and pass the remaining time.
After a while Gemma looks up at the clock checking the time "5:50" she said to herself as she placed her knitting needle back into the basket and gets up from the couch going into her bedroom once there she walked to her closet looking for the perfect dress after browsing her closet for a few moments she decided on
Across town Nero is in a flower shop trying to decide on what kind of flowers to get Gemma after looking at the ones they have he's decided on some red roses and a little card with a pink rose on it walking up to the counter he places the flowers down
"You got a pen?" he asked the woman
"Sure" she hands him her pen
Nero grabs the card from inside the flowers putting it down onto the counter starting to write into it
Beautiful flowers for a beautiful lady, Nero he closes the card putting it back into the flowers giving the woman back her pen
"Is this it?" she asked, motioning to the flowers
"Yeah" he said, getting out his wallet
She rings up the flowers "That'll be 3.35, please"
Nero opens his wallet taking out a five dollar bill handing it to the girl
The girl takes the money from him putting it into the register giving him 2 dollars and some change back "Here's your change, sir, have a good day"
"Thanks" he picks up the flowers and heads out to his car getting inside and to Gemma's
Meanwhile Gemma is over at her DVD collection trying to find a few movies for her and Nero to watch on their date.
After looking a while she picks out a 4 movies bringing them over to the TV stand setting them down.
Five Minutes Later: 5:55pm
A knock at the door startles Gemma a bit quickly she gets up taking a deep breath going over to the door opening it
"Hey" she smiled letting him inside
"Hey yourself, you look beautiful" he smiled, handing her the flowers
She smiles at him taking them "Thank you"
"You're welcome" he said
She walks over to the sink filling up the vase on the counter with water taking off the wrap off the flowers placing them inside the vase and onto the middle of the counter.
Nero looks around her house a bit nervously "Nice place" he commented
"Thanks" she says
"I'm going to order the pizza right now, have a seat in the living room" she points her finger to the way
"Is there anything special you want on your pizza?" she asked, looking at him
"Uh yeah onions and sausage" he answered
"Okay" she says
He walked over the couch taking a seat while Gemma grabbed her phone from the counter flipping up her phone dialing Pizza Hut's number, after a few rings someone answers – a woman
"Pizza Hut, can I take your order?" she asked in a chipper tone
"Yes, I'd like to order a medium pizza with onions, pepperoni and sausage and a liter of Pepsi" Gemma said
"Okay, pick up or delivery, Ma'am?" the lady asked, Gemma rolls her eyes looking at Nero
"Delivery" Gemma responded, sighing
"What's the address?" the lady asked
"8824 Sandy Creek Ave" Gemma replied
"Okay, Ma'am, it should be there in 10 minutes, thank you" she said
"Thank you" Gemma hangs up the phone throwing it back onto the counter
"Well that's done" she announced
"Good, let's watch some TV until it gets here and then the movie" she suggested
"Okay" he said
Gemma walked over to the couch and sat down next to him grabbing the remote turning on the TV flipping through the channels trying to find something to watch finally she decides on I love Lucy for now.
Ten Minutes Later: 6:25pm
A knock at the door startled them a bit
"Pizza's here" she announced getting up from the couch, Nero watches her walk into the kitchen
Gemma goes over to the back door opening it there standing is the pizza boy
"Hello, that'll be 12.67, Ma'am" he said, smiling at her
"Okay, hang on" She said, closing the door
Walking over to her purse opening it she grabbed her wallet taking out 13.00 dollars closing her wallet and putting it back onto her purse and walking back to the door opening it again
The young man opens the thermal heating cover taking out the pizza and the bag with the liter of pop in it handing them both to her
"Here you go" he says, she hands him the money
"Thanks, here's your change, Ma'am, you have a nice night" she takes the change into her hands and he walks away to his car getting in driving away.
Gemma turns around putting everything onto the counter before she drops it
"Gem, you need some help in there?" he asked, standing up
"No No, I got it, thanks" Gemma replied
Nero walks into the kitchen and over to the door closing it again
"I think you do need a little help" he says, smiling
Gemma smiles back opening up the pizza box "Mm, smells great" she commented
"Yeah" he agreed
She walks over to the cupboard getting down two plates and two glasses, Nero walks over to her taking one of the plates and glasses their hands lightly touch
Gemma's breathing hitches and her heart races and she clears her throat walking past him to the box of pizza grabbing two pieces opening the liter of pop pouring some into her glass going back into the living room sitting down on the couch to wait for him.
Nero grabs two pieces of pizza putting them onto his plate and pouring some pop into his glass and goes over to the couch sitting down next to her.
Gemma flips through the channels for a few moments not finding anything on she decides on an actual DVD.
Reaching for the few DVD's on the stand
"Okay we have 4 movies to choose from" she announced
Nero looks down at all of them "How about this one?" he asked
Gemma laughs "Fatal Attraction?" she questioned incredulously, still laughing
"What?" he questions "What's so funny?" he asks, curiously
"It's..just an old movie" She stops laughing looking over at him
"Yeah, well do you have a better idea?" he asked
"I'm sorry for laughing" she said "How about this one?" she asked, showing him the movie
"Okay that's better...I guess" he shrugged his shoulders
Gemma pops in the movie he chose for them to watch and they start watching it and eating their pizza every once and awhile stealing glances at each other Gemma grabs his hand interlacing their fingers together, he looks at her smiling, but then focuses back on the movie.
An Hour And Thirty Minutes Later: 7:30pm
The movie is now over Gemma yawning grabs the remote flips off the TV and both of them have finished their pizza and pop
"It's been a long day" She announced
"Yeah it has" he agreed
"Thanks for coming over" she said
"You're welcome" he says
"I'd love to have more dates with you" he admitted
"Me too" she says
Two Hours Later: 9pm
Looking at his watch standing up, Nero announced "I'd better get going"
"Oh" she replied a bit disappointed
"You- you don't want to stay?" she asked, standing up rubbing his chest softly playing with the cross around his neck.
He swallows hard, looking at her "I uh shouldn't"
Going over to the door, Gemma follows him
They stand there neither is sure what to do suddenly Nero leans into her Gemma meets him halfway until their lips lightly brush against each other then actually touch starting to kiss quickly it turns passionate with their tongues slipping inside each others mouths both are moaning passionately, Nero grabs the back of her head while Gemma pushes him up against the door and it banged shut.

[Notes] Well there's chapter 2 finally. I struggled with how to end this chapter because I don't want their relationship to go too fast or slow. I hope the slow burn is still okay for them.
