An Introduction to the Magical World

Chapter 1

...

It was morning when Ochako had woken up.

She was feeling a bit wobbly following that strange dream of hers last night. It was a dream about her gaining magical powers and meeting two wizards and their professor. In her honest opinion, she hadn't exactly believed whatever happened was even real from the start.

But sure enough, she found herself with a mouth wide open as she stared at the said pair of wizards and witches who were currently sitting calmly at the dining table chatting amicably with her parents. Just right after she had completed her morning routine.

It was here that Ochako realized that her dream about using magic and meeting mages was very real from the start. It had taken Ochako an immense amount of control to not scream at the pair, asking why and how they were even here in her house.

Regardless, Ochako elected to not say a word as she approached the table and sat down facing the pair directly.

"Ah, Ochako dear, I'm glad that you can finally join us," her mother greeted her, "I was just having a nice conversation with these people, are they your friends?"

"Th-They are friends I made yesterday Mother," Ochako replied, "Nothing more."

"Ah, I see," said Mrs. Uraraka warmly, "You know they were just telling me an interesting story about how you guys met."

Ochako at that very moment felt dread. Having a feeling about what her mother was going to say next. She quickly glanced at the pair who's expression showed no signs of changing as her mother continued.

"They informed me how you got jumped by a few hooligans," her mother said worryingly, "I was shocked Chako, why didn't you tell us that this is what happened yesterday? I knew something wasn't right when you came home."

"Wha... What?" Ochako stammered, she felt a bit relieved that her mother wasn't aware of her status as a mage. She didn't want them to know just yet. If she was going to let them know. She was going to do it on her terms.

"Ambushed by these hooligans, Chako dear," her mother repeated, "I nearly fainted in shock when your friends told me about it. I'm just glad that everything is alright."

"I'm fine mom, I can handle myself," Ochako replied, "It's not like I am defenseless anyways. I have enough training to handle any criminals."

"And what if these criminals prove to be more than what you can handle?" her mother rebutted, "Are you sure you can handle them?"

"That's uh...,"

Ochako's mother sighed as she watched her daughter trying to argue with that point. At least she had good friends watching over her. She thought as she watched the pair who were giggling at the little exchange she and her daughter were currently engaged to.

"You know I'm just glad that you're okay and have made wonderful friends," said her mother, "Apart from that, I'll leave you alone to chat with your friends. In the meantime, do enjoy your breakfast. If you need anything I'll be in the kitchen."

"Will do Mom," Ochako replied,

Satisfied, Mrs. Uraraka quickly took her leave, leaving the trio in the dining room alone. Ochako quickly turned to the pair in anger.

"What the fuck are you two doing here!?" she yelled at the both of them.

"Uh, if you haven't noticed, too... Check up on you?" Izuku said sheepishly.

"I'm sorry, hello?! We are trying to help you regarding your situation. Could you care to be a bit more... Polite?" Melissa deadpanned.

Ochako frowned, "I thought Tsubasa was supposed to handle this. Not the two of you! Where is she anyways?"

"Dealing with the ministry," Melissa sighed, "As a result, she is a bit busy at the moment. Do you even realize what kind of trouble you are giving her because of the nature of your situation?"

Ochako shook her head nervously, "What did my situation lead to?" she was afraid to ask.

"Well, I can tell you the ministry is up in arms," Melissa stated bluntly, "They want to know how your existence is even possible in the first place. And going back to Professor Tsubasa's statement of being experimented on. I guess she was right about that."

"I... I see," Ochako said with a downcasted expression, "I'm... I going to be in a lot of... Trouble now?"

"Not really, Tsubasa is currently going through the options regarding how to deal with your situation," Melissa explained, "The Ministry, on one hand, wants you to attend Mahoutokoro, the Japanese wizardry school of magic; where you will be taught the basics of magic and the Japanese wizard's code."

"Okay, I'm assuming Izuku is part of the school right?" Ochako inquired.

Izuku nodded, "That is right, as you can see with the uniform I am wearing which indicates to you that I am a student part of that school. We at Mahoutokoro take pride in having the best magical education, comparable to that of the Wizardry schools of Europe. Of course, unlike in Europe where students are taught at the age of eleven. We start our education around the age of seven and then we attend the institution via boarding like the rest of the world."

Ochako nearly did a spit-take as she soon came to realize how far behind she was in her magical knowledge. Izuku unfortunately didn't notice her reaction as he kept going.

"As a result, Mahoutokoro has the reputation of having an impressive academic prowess, and an outstanding reputation for Quidditch. We take our education seriously with discipline and rigorous learning. The most gifted students of Mahoutokoro, are rewarded prized wands made out of cherry wood, and those who owned them were held in a place of high honor." Izuku finished.

"I see, and do you want that prized?" she asked, unsure whether she should be asking that question.

"Most definitely," Izuku exclaimed excitedly, "Having that wand is a guaranteed ticket to be noticed by wizards and witches in high places. As a Wizard aiming to be an Auror, my goal is to achieve the highest scores in my magical education, gain that prized wand, and be noticed by an Auror. That is my goal."

"And what is this so-called Auror, may I ask?"

"Our version of what you would know as heroes!" Izuku presented.

"What!" Ochako exclaimed, "You guys have wizard heroes!?"

"His explanation is not entirely correct," Melissa jumped in to clear the confusion, "Although, to be fair, if you're looking from a certain perspective. You might as well call them that."

"So what are they exactly?"

"The wizardry world version of the non-magical world's law enforcement, quite literally," Melissa stated, "In layman's terms, an Auror was a wizard or witch that worked as a highly trained law enforcement official for a wizarding governing body. Auror training was extremely difficult and intensive, so there were few qualified applicants. Aurors of different countries dealt with different high-risk situations that were most prominent to them. We are in many ways like heroes, but a bit different in other areas."

"That sounds so cool, and are you trying to become one as well?" Ochako said quivering with excitement. The idea of becoming a magical equivalent of the hero system she sees today. In her head, it sounds like a great prospect to pursue as a financial decision and as a way to earn money to help her family.

"I'm afraid not," Melissa replied shaking her head, "Like I mentioned before, to become an Auror is hard work. Their training and areas of responsibility varied greatly depending on the type of threats for which they were prepared, and the magical education they received beforehand. As such, the number of wizards and witches becoming one is very low. It's a quality-over-quantity, type of situation. Not everyone is suited to be an Auror. Along with that, the level of threats Aurors have to face daily far exceeds that of the threats faced by today's heroes of the hero system. It's just how reality works after all."

"I see, so they're just the usual common law enforcement then, huh?"

"Well, like I said before. Aurors are essentially, the wizarding world equivalent of police officers and military, they served in both roles for wizardkind. You'll have to be very skilled in terms of magical ability and have an extensive level of education to become one. But if you can manage that, then I can guarantee to you that all that hard work will be worth it." Melissa said with a smile.

"I see, I'll keep that in mind," said Ochako sheltering the idea of becoming an Auror for now, "And what about visiting parents, don't you guys get to go home if you're boarding? Or are you guys stuck at school until your education is finished" She would hate if that was the case. Her parents have a lot to worry about. She didn't want them to be burdened by not having her around until her magical education was finished. Henceforth, explained why she asked that question.

"We do," Izuku explained, "Every holiday, or school break. Wizarding children were flown back and forth to their homes every day on the backs of a flock of giant storm petrels. It's quite fun actually to travel around. Our families are important along with our education. My mother despite not being a wizard does very much miss my presence. as much as I do."

"Wait, your mother isn't a witch?" Ochako asked suddenly, this was news to her.

"Well my dad is one, as for my mother, she has a Quirk, it is called Attraction of Small Objects," Izuku explained, "She knows I am a wizard and she supports me dearly. Of course, because of my magic education requirement, our relationship is a bit broken. But it remains healthy."

"I see," said Ochako, "I am glad your mother fully supports your education."

"Yeah, she's quite kind," Izuku said sheepishly, "I'm proud to have a mother like her."

"Indeed he would be. As you can see, Midoriya-san is someone most wizardkind would refer to as a half-blood," Melissa addressed, "They are commonly born with a single witch or wizard as a parent. However, in my case, I would be referred to as a Muggle-born. I have both parents who have 'Quirks' but I was born with magical abilities."

Ochako was now curious, "How does that work?" she asked.

"Well, I'm not well-versed in genetics. But I'll try to explain. You see, my family had a distant ancestor who was a wizard. That wizard had two children one with magic and the other without. Now this was back before modern technology came about and back then children being born without magic was considered a disgrace and were promptly abandoned by the family."

Ochako gasped as she looked at Melissa in horror. How could these people do such a thing?

"Now, that abandoned child survived and managed to have children of his own. But what most wizards and witches back then knew was that the gene that allowed us to produce magical offspring was dormant. It remained so until my birth in which I inherited the now awakened magical gene allowing me to access this great power known as magic. And that is how Muggle-born are created."

"Okay, interesting history aside, I assumed that this abandoning your child is considered... Illegal?"

"Not entirely, there are still some cases of that happening across the world," Ochako didn't bother to contain her look of horror.

"But the ICW has placed laws and strict punishment against that practice," Izuku explained, "Child abuse of any kind regardless if you're a Muggle-born, Half-blood, or a Squib is considered a capital crime punishable by life imprisonment or death. There have been many cases where bad things have happened as a result of child abuse. Hence, we take such allegation seriously."

"But still, it's disturbing that practice is still happening despite these laws," Ochako stated.

"Well, it's perfect and I agree, but we are doing everything we can to prevent that. But unfortunately, as reality has shown us many times. There are still those who slip through the cracks." Izuku said sadly.

"But enough depressing talk. We are here to introduce you to the good side of the world of magic and wizardry," Melissa stated, "Speaking of which, Professor Tsubasa had ordered us to take Ochako to the meeting point. After she had finished her breakfast and gotten ready."

"Why does she want to meet me now of all times?"

"To get you the real experience of the magical world, of course," Izuku smiled excitedly his joy was almost infectious.

"But not only that. We also need to get you... " Melissa added, there was a glint in her eyes as she looked directly at Ochako. As she anticipated her next words. "A wand, and so I say again. Welcome to the magical World, Uraraka Ochako. Your Wizardry journey begins now!"

Ochako couldn't help but shake in excitement.

...

After breakfast, the trio found themselves in an alley as they arrived to meet Professor Tsubasa who was standing with her back against the wall waiting for the group to arrive. She gave them a small smile as they walked up to her.

"Troubles Professor?" Melissa asked.

"Plenty," she replied, "The Minister won't shut up about sending Ochako right away to Mahoutokoro to be immediately enrolled. I had advised him that we should take time to get her acclimated with her new status before looking directly into her magical education. Surprisingly enough his deputy minister agreed with me regarding this sentiment."

"So uh, I'm I going to Mahoutokoro... or ... am I not?" Ochako asked meekly.

"You are you have to go essentially. Because magical education is mandatory by law," Tsubasa explained, "It's just that we are not sure whether it's better to have you attend the school to get your magical education or have a tutor provide that for you. I was going more for the tutor aspect. Mainly because I had to take into account your unique circumstances."

"I see,"

"But no matter, we are not going to learn magic today. That is a fact," Tsubasa stated, "We are here to get you a wand, young Uraraka. You can't exactly do magic with a tool to help you."

"Of course, to be honest. I'm a bit excited for that," Ochako admitted.

"Of course, getting a wand is every wizardry kid's excitement. You are no different. Now without further ado, let's go fulfill that mission. Shall we," Tsubasa said as she placed her hand against the wall that she had been leaning on.

As if something out of a fantasy novel. The wall vanished with a shimmer which revealed to the group an entirely new setting. Where was once a wall was now a street filled with people walking about their day. As the group entered the street, Ochako couldn't help but be amazed as she took in the area all around her. It was a street reminiscent of what one can find in the Edo to Meiji period. On both sides of the streets were houses that had shops selling unique items Ochako was certain would come out of a fantasy novel she had read when she was younger.

There was just so much to take in and soon enough she was beginning to be overwhelmed by the sight.

"Pay attention," Tsubasa clasps her hand on her shoulder to stop her from bumping into the pedestrians. "I know you're surprised but do remember that we're on a busy street."

"R-Right, I'm sorry," Ochako replied sheepishly.

"It's okay, You, not the first to be overwhelmed like that," Tsubasa said with a smile, "Every child I know, including Izuku and Melissa has had a similar reaction to yours when entering the wizardry world hidden from the No-magic."

"Yeah, it was kinda embarrassing at first, but you'll get used to it," Izuku said while scratching the back of his head.

"Now then, with that out of the way we shall now head for the wand shop, follow me," Tsubasa said as she began walking down the street at a quick pace.

Ochako and the duo quickly followed behind the animated Professor as she walked towards one of the shophouses that seemed out of place compared to the building that it was nestled in. The building itself was European in design, which made it stand out against the Japanese-style buildings on this street.

The shop was narrow and shabby with peeling gold letters over the door of the shop read: Ollivanders: Makers of Fine Wands since 382 B.C. The shop's display consisted of a solitary wand lying on a faded purple cushion in the dusty window. Unlike the other houses on this street. This shop in particular looked run down. Ochako turned to look at Tsubasa questionably as she stared at the shop.

"Ahh Ollivanders, I have great memories of doing business with them," Melissa replied.

"Same for me too," Izuku added, "It's where I first got my wand."

"Indeed, as you can tell from the sign in gold letters. Ollivanders is a well-renowned wandmaker family whose business goes back centuries if not thousands of years. They make the highest quality wand that is renowned across the world. It is also the place where most wizardkind first go to get their first wand. And it is here that you shall be walking that path. So young Uraraka are you ready to acquire your first wand?" Tsubasa asked Ochako addressing her as a child on the first day of Chirstmas eve.

"Yes!" she exclaimed already quivering with excitement.

"So without further ado, let's go," Tsubasa said as the group entered the shop.

The shop was tiny, and empty except for a single, spindly chair in the corner. Thousands of narrow boxes containing wands were piled right up to the ceiling of the tiny shop, and the whole place had a thin layer of dust about it. Ochako was amazed at the boxes as they each contained magical wands. Ready to be used and brought. Moreover, there were thousands of them and she wasn't sure what or how to choose one.

Luckily for her, that is where the shop's wandmaker comes in. He was an old man of caucasian descent with a long white beard, bald, and with grey eyes. He was wearing a suit that one would find wearing in the 19th century, British style. He was currently dusting away a small pile of boxes as he saw the group enter.

"Ahh, Tsubasa," he greeted with his eyes wide open, "What brings you here today?"

"Did you not get my letter?" she asked the wandmaker abruptly.

"I'm afraid not," the old wandmaker shook his head, "As you can see, I am currently dealing with a... Sorting issue. It's been years since I last sorted these wands."

"I see, but let me be brief as you can tell of my purpose here. I need a wand for our newest witch who has just awakened her power. She is a late one," Tsubasa explained.

"A late one indeed. And won't it happen to be you, young miss?"

Ochako nodded shyly, "Yes, I am."

"Wonderful, it is rare to find late boomers like yourself. But lately, they have been a common occurrence now and then," the wandmaker laughed joyfully.

"Yeah, but she is one of a kind," Tsubasa remarked, "She has a Quirk as well."

"I'm sorry but did you say, she has a Quirk?" the wandmaker looked confused.

"I am, show him," Tsubasa ordered.

Ochako turned to a small pile of boxes that were lying in one corner of the shop. Placing all ten fingers on the bottom and at the top of the pile. The boxes began to slowly levitate from the ground and into the air. Leaving the wandmaker amazed in disbelief and the group with a smile. With Tsubasa herself grinning at his reaction.

"H-How t-the," he stammered in amazement as he turned to look at Tsubasa questionably as to where she was going with this.

"We are not exactly sure," Tsubasa admitted, "The ministry is currently trying to get to the bottom of it. At this current moment, we are arguing how we should proceed with her education. But right now, it is decided that she will need to acquire a wand first and foremost."

"Well, I can agree with that. But this is just... Amazing," the wandmaker exclaimed, "I never thought this was even possible."

"Neither have I, but as they say seeing is believing," Tsubasa just laughed, "So you have a wand for her?"

"Plenty," the wandmaker replied as he took a box from one of the large towering piles, before taking the wand out and handing it to her.

"Please try it, give it a little wave," he said presenting her with the wand.

"O-Okay here goes nothing," Ochako said giving the wand a quick wave.

Like a parody of her first attempt at casting magic with a wand when she first met Melissa and Midoriya Izuku. The wand shop exploded, quite literally. Boxes flew out, piles collapsed, and the group was nearly buried as the cascade collapse of numerous piles nearly crushed them under the tide of cardboard. Ochako was left wondering where she had gone wrong.

"That wand is a no," the wandmaker said with a sigh. At least he knows for sure the young girl can use magic for real.

"Geez, you think?" Tsubasa shouted from underneath the pile that she was buried in, "I don't know how you wand makers cope with this kind of bullshit."

"With patience and a lot of restraint," the wandmaker said, as he cast a mending charm to fix the room back to its original state. "Well, wand is a bust. Time to try another."

The wandmaker quickly went to another pile, this time taking another wand with a different design. Handing it out to Ochako.

"Now try this one,"

"Uh, but won't it..."

"Oh, don't worry about that. This happens all the time, especially for those choosing their very first wands. Besides we have spells that can fix these kinds of mess so like before just give it a little wave and we shall see the results." the wandmaker reassured her.

"Okay then," said Ochako as she did as she was ordered to.

Only this time, it was a glass crystal ball that shattered leaving Melissa to jump in fright as the glass ball exploded nearly hitting her in the face. Ochako said a prayer and a mental apology to Melissa as she gave the wand back to the wandmaker.

"Not that one either," the wandmaker said with disappointment. As he went back to searching.

A little while later he came across one wand in the mess of thousands of piles that littered the shop. He was now for sure, certain that this was the right wand for Ochako.

"Here try this one," the old wandmaker said presenting the third wand.

Ochako this time had a good look at the wand she was being presented with. It had a very simplistic design around roughly ten to twelve inches. It was yellowish gold and near the bottom of the wand, it had a couple of swirl designs that Ochako assumed were where one would grip the wand in place. But there was something else, Ochako felt a force that compelled her to take the wand and make it her own.

She wasn't exactly sure where this compulsion was coming from. But acting on instinct she took the hand and grasped it. Almost immediately, she felt a rush of energy that seemed to flow from the wand and into her own body. Merging with her already existing power. It was a feeling that felt energizing and powerful. Like she was capable of passing barriers and acting as if there was nothing in the world that could stop her. The wandmaker watched intently at this new development before smiling.

"I guess, you have found the wand that you have been looking for," he said.

"It feels, amazing," Ochako breathed, "I feel powerful," she muttered silently still admiring the wand she had in her grasp.

"Well, I guess that is for shopping," Tsubasa quickly stood up from the chair she was sitting in. "Why don't you two take her out to explore while I pay the bills."

"Sure thing, Professor," Melissa replied, "Come on, let us take a tour of this street while we wait."

"Come on, it will be fun!" Izuku said excitedly, "There is so much I want to show you."

"Okay Okay, you guys have my attention. So where are we going..."

The trio left the shop leaving the Professor behind with the wandmaker as the pair watched the trio leave. It was not long before they were far from their earshot. Tsubasa turned to the wandmaker with questions.

"So..." she began, "What kind of wand did you give to her?"

"A wand made from a Dragon heartstring core and a body made of vine," the wandmaker answered from memory. "I expect good things to come from her. I suspect that she will be one hell of a witch when she completes her eventual education. With a Dragon heartstring as a core, she will be able to learn spells faster and easier, however, do be prepared as wands with a a Dragon heartstring core are more prone to accidents."

"I'll keep that in mind," Tsubasa replied,

"And speaking of educational matters. What are the plans for education you think might be suitable for her, may I ask? Considering her unique if not unusual situation." the old wandmaker inquired.

"My thoughts were lending to a private tutor," Tsubasa said hesitantly, "While I may think having her attend Mahoutokoro is correct. I still have to be content with the fact that her situation is different compared to most wizards and witches. Having her attend Mahoutokoro is just going to cause issues for not only us as teachers but for her as well."

"That's what I thought as well," the wandmaker replied, "Although I am not the right person to ask this. But could she potentially have both forms of education at the same time?"

"That is being considered but the Ministry is reviewing all options at the current moment," Tsubasa answered, "This situation has just been headache after headache for me."

"I can tell from your tone, Takahashi," the wandmaker replied referring to her last name. "Who else apart from your student, the American exchange student and the ministry knows about this?"

"Only you, do try and keep this a secret would you," Tsubasa asked, "We don't want trouble to come at her especially this early on."

"I have my lips sealed," nodded the wandmaker.

"Anyways, it's time for the payment how much would that wand be?"

"Ahh, it would be..."

...

"So what do you think?" Izuku asked Ochako as they exited a potions store.

"I think I am still dreaming," Ochako replied causing both Izuku and Melissa to laugh.

"Well I can tell you that you're not dreaming miss," Melissa stated, "In the first time I had thought, I had been Isekai'ed from this very world."

"So what do you think? Are you enjoying your wand and your first taste in magic?" Izuku asked.

"Yeah, I am," Ochako replied softly, "It's just... I am honestly amazed at how much my life has changed since meeting you guys yesterday."

"Yeah, suddenly awakening your magic tends to do that a lot," Melissa explained.

"So what's happened now?" Ochako asked.

"I know that the last few days have been overwhelming. As such, just relax for the weekend alright? You must gain a wand and learn that you have an aptitude for magic. Right now, I think it's best that you need to rest before we can truly begin learning magic. After all, as Professor Tsubasa had said before, the ministry and her are still debating on how to conduct your education."

"I see," Ochako replied softly.

"Don't be discouraged, Uraraka-san. You are still new to magic and there is much to learn. But I am certain that you will be able to do it," Izuku added, "Like for example, myself I am studying to be an Auror. It was hard at first, but I kept going. I have faith that you can do the same."

"I don't know what to say," said Ochako, "That... That means a lot. Thank you for your kind words, Midoriya-kun,"

"No problems,"

"Anyways, I was also thinking about becoming an Auror as well,"

"What you as well?" Izuku replied a bit surprised.

"Yeah, I was thinking. Because Aurors are kinda like heroes. I would like to be one as well. But in the form of a magical hero. I know Quirks exist but, can you imagine the potential there could be if Magic was involved?"

"I can, but let me remind you the last time mysterious powers showed up across an unprepared world," Melissa deadpanned, "The Quirk Wars and the Purity Wars happened."

"I know I know, but it's just that the potential for magic to be used for heroics cannot be understated," Ochako argued, "I want to change that and bring peace and happiness to the world. I want magic to be a revolutionary force. That would bring about a revolution."

"A tall goal," Melissa replied, "Do you think you can achieve it though?"

Ochako took a deep breath before looking directly at Melissa. Where she could see the burning conviction that was raging inside of Ochako. "I can because I have to."

And so the die was cast.

...
