a/n: Hello, everyone! Happy Halloween! I hope you're having a spooky and fun filled day. Our little guy turned 4 years old yesterday and it's hard to believe it's been that long since we brought him home.
Here is the next chapter. Ironically enough, I wrote this a couple of weeks ago so the title came before the sad news about Matthew Perry. Chandler is my favorite character and I am sadden by the loss of such a sweet and kind man.
I also wanted to mention that we are approaching the one year anniversary of Jason David Frank's passing. I know it's going to be hard for a lot of us so remember my inbox is always open and feel free to reach out. I am meeting Amy Jo Johnson this week (ekkkkkkk!) for the first time and it's oddly enough on the one year anniversary of the last time I met JDF. I will send her everyone's love.
Until then, please read and review!
Enjoy :)
Chapter Twenty-One
I'll Be There for You
My entire body was aching as I climbed up the steps to the tour bus. The shows in Portland had been exciting and full of energy but it was taking its toll on me. I couldn't wait to lay down in my bed and zonk out for the entirety of the drive to Washington. I headed back into the bedroom of the bus and plopped on the bed, closing my eyes as my face sank into the feather pillow. Even though I couldn't breathe properly, it felt heavenly. It didn't matter that I was still in my jeans and blouse from the show. This was all that mattered to me.
A shrill riming noise pulled me out of my half sleeping state. I groaned, knowing full well that it was my cell phone. It was nearing midnight. What on Earth could be so important that they needed to call me right now? Shifting, I spotted my cell phone pulled into the outlet nearby bed. I grabbed it and saw that it was Billy calling. Crap.
"Hey, Billy." I said, bringing the phone to my ear.
"Hello, Kim. Is now still a good time to troubleshoot your computer?" He asked. I forgot I had asked him to give me a call tonight to help me set up the laptop that was perched on the little computer stand in the corner.
"Yeah. Now is perfect." I said, sliding off the bed and walking over to the desk. I sat in the chair, opening the screen. It lit up brightly, the logo for the company that made it in the middle of it.
"Is there an Ethernet cable plugged into the back of it? This will be different than the power cord. Perhaps a bright color of some sorts." He asked. I stood up, looking over the top of it and I saw a bright yellow cord with a plastic little hook up sticking into the ports in the back.
"I believe so." I said, sitting back down. The screen went to the desktop where a bunch of icons appeared.
"Great. Now, I need you to open up the Skype application on your desktop. It'll be the blue one." He instructed. Using the mousepad, I pulled up the program and waited for it to load. After a few seconds it did and an image of myself popped up. I saw it was my current appearance, my face lit with a white glow in the dark room.
"Urgh. Hold on." Reach over, I flipped on the light. It illuminated the picture a couple seconds later, looking a little more flattering. I fixed my hair, pulling it back into a ponytail. "That's better."
"Alright. You should be getting an incoming call now." As he said that, the computer began to ring loudly with a little melody and a screen popped up with Billy's name, saying he was calling. I clicked on the green button, answering it. The screen changed, showing myself still but a black box with Billy's name in the corner. A few seconds later, his image appeared. I could see his dining room behind him, the ceiling fan spinning behind his head.
"I can see you!" I said and I could hear myself on his end of the phone.
"Affirmative and your microphone is working as well. I'm going to terminate the phone call." He stated, his voice echoing through the phone and computer. We hung up and I tossed my cell phone onto the bed right behind me. Billy gave a little wave and a small smile.
"This is crazy. If only Zordon and Alpha could see the kind of technology every day humans are using now." I smirked, making the window with Billy in it bigger. "Thank you so much for helping me with this Billy. I appreciate it."
"No worries. After all, it seems like I am the one who is in your gratitude." He stated.
"What do you mean?" I asked, confused. I watched as he turned, picking something up next to him. I saw a piece of paper in his hand as he faced me again.
"Dear Mr. Cranston, Here is your certification of satisfaction upon the completion of your mortgage. Enclosed is your updated deed to your home showing a zero balance." He read before putting the paper back down. "Doesn't necessarily take a rocket scientist to figure out how this happened."
"Billy, I couldn't let you lose you and your Dad's house." I said.
"I understand your concern, Kim. But I told you before that I was going to figure things out. I didn't ask for your help."
"Well, now you can do what you want with the house! You can sell it and get something smaller. Or you can stay there and maybe find a way to make it so your Dad can come back home to stay. Either way, you don't have to worry about those two mortgages over your head."
"I really wish you would have spoken to me first before paying all that money. I'll never be able to pay that back to you." He said, shaking his head.
"You aren't paying it back to me. It was my way for making up for the fact that I was a shitty friend that never checked on you when you needed me and for just disappearing all those years ago. It's an apology."
"I told you that you don't need to apologize for living your life."
"Billy, you're so sweet but Trini was right when she let me have it in Vegas. I turned my back on all of your because of what happened between Tommy and I. That wasn't right of me and I really shouldn't have pretended that you guys didn't exist anymore just to avoid the guilt I was feeling. I know I over stepped and I'm sorry. If it makes you feel any better, it was extra money from a bonus I got for the tour. So really, the record company did it. I just assisted." I bit my lip, really hoping that Billy wasn't upset with me. I watched him for a moment, his mind turning as he thought. A smile crossed his face before he sat forward a bit.
"Perhaps I went into the wrong business. I should have done sound engineering."
"Hey, it's not too late. I couldn't probably hook you up with something." I smirked. Billy and I both laughed, making me feel better. Telling Shayna to pay off his home loans was the first thing that came to mind when I was given that bonus. I knew that I owed Billy my life these days and this was one small way I could try to fix everything I had turned my back on.
"I'll keep that in mind. How was the show tonight?"
"Long but fun. Lots of energy. How are things there? How's your Dad?"
"He's doing okay. He has his setbacks but he's making progress day by day. I saw Trini and Jason earlier today. They had an appointment for the baby. Everything is doing well. She wanted me to pass along the message and her Skype name to you so you can connect with her sometime."
"That's great! I know it's not like really being there but just seeing your faces aftert being so far away even on a screen is just what I need."
"You were greatly missed and it's nice having you back."
"Thanks, Billy." I glanced at the clock. "Do you think it's too late to try Tommy?" There was a noise on his side of the screen and Billy chuckled.
"Well, I don't think so seeing as he keeps messaging me to see if I have you set up yet. I'll message you everyone's screen names so you can add them to your friends list. Feel free to give me a call any time, okay?"
"I will. Hey, Billy?" I asked.
"What's up?"
"Did you get anywhere on who wrote that letter I showed you?"
"I was able to analyze the envelope a little and found that there weren't any familiar prints on it or DNA. Whoever wrote it wasn't a Ranger at least and there weren't any signs of unidentified biological makeup." I stared at him blankly. "Sorry. There's no signs it was an alien lifeform."
"So, who do you think it was?"
"Honestly, I have no idea. But I will keep digging. Perhaps it was someone who really was worried about Tommy's wellbeing and figured you were the person he needed to see."
"Maybe." I said softly.
"We'll figure it out. You better hop on with Romeo before he shows up here." Billy chuckled. "See ya, Kim."
"Bye, Billy." We disconnected and a message popped up from Billy with a list of screen names for everyone. I found the one with Tommy's name next to it and put it on my friends list. It popped up in bold blue writing. Double clicking on it, that ringing noise played again while I looked at my image on the screen. It connected, a black square next to mine. A second later, a smiling Tommy Oliver was looking at me. He was sitting in what looked like a home office, pictures and his degree on the wall behind him with some shelves and a plant.
"Hey, beautiful. Aren't you a sight to see?" He said, leaning forward on his palm.
"Hi, handsome." I replied, feeling the blush in my cheeks. "I missed you."
"I missed you, too. I'm grateful Billy was able to help set this up for you."
"Me, too. How are you? How are the boys?" I asked, getting comfortable in my seat.
"They are doing good. They are loving being on summer break meanwhile I can't wait for school to start up again." He laughed, scratching his forehead. "How's the tour?"
"Oh, you know. Same old, same old." I replied.
"Only you could make being a record breaking artist boring." He teased.
"It's a gift."
"I can't wait to see you in Seattle. I made plans for the boys to stay with Billy. I should be there Friday morning. I booked a hotel room right next to the venue."
"Oh, you shouldn't have. I could have handled that for you." I said.
"Kim, it's fine. I can pay for things too."
"I know." I shrugged. "I just prefer to."
"I know you do." He said flatly.
"Well, what else am I going to spend my money on? I'm on the road almost 24/7. It's not like I am entertaining myself."
"Well, you have that longer break coming up soon, right?" He asked. I nodded.
"Yeah. About half way through August. I'll have a whole week off. I'm already looking forward to it. I'll probably come back to Angel Grove for it."
"Actually, I was thinking that maybe the boys and I could come down to Nashville to spend some time with you there. That is if the offer still stands."
"Really?" I asked, smiling.
"Sure. I think the boys would enjoy it and like you said, it would be a nice vacation before the end of summer. I was looking at hotels last night."
"You aren't staying in a hotel." I laughed, shaking my head. "I have enough bedrooms at my house. Y'all are going to stay with me."
"Yall?" He scoffed, smirking at me. "Maybe you have been there too long."
"Ha ha." I said, rolling my eyes. "It's a hard habit to break once you pick it up."
"It's cute. You're like a little country bumpkin now." He teased. I loved how relaxed and at eased Tommy seemed now. It reminded me of the Tommy I grew up and fell in love with. There was no stressed out tension in his body. Instead, he was in the moment and he was genuinely smiling and laughing with me. "What are you thinking about?" He asked, breaking me from my thoughts.
"Huh?" I asked.
"You went somewhere for a moment. Where'd you go?"
"I was just thinking about you as a kid." I replied, leaning back in my own chair so I could fold my legs under me. "Smiling suites you."
"Yeah? I'll keep that in mind." Chuckling, I could tell that he was looking at something on his computer screen. A noise chimed after that.
"What was that?" I asked.
"Dojo stuff. It's never ending."
"I never did come see the dojo while I was in town. Next time I'm there, you'll have to show me around."
"I'd like that. I have to get some renovations done because of a leak in the roof so it's a bit chaotic right now."
"Well, better step on it because I think I'm coming to Angel Grove for the weekend of the 4th of July. I'm booked for a summer series event in San Diego that weekend and figured I would just hang out with everyone before I head off on the East Coast part of the tour."
"How long will you be on that side of the country?" He asked.
"Probably the rest of the summer and into the early parts of fall. I'll be flying back and forth a bunch because the label wants me to release a couple of Christmas singles this year so I need to record them and shoot a music video. It looks like I'll be non-stop after August until right before Christmas."
"I guess I'll have to get as much of you as I can when I can." Tommy smiled and I felt a flutter in my heart. I knew he wasn't saying it in a suggestive manner but it made me feel a certain type of way quickly followed by a feeling of nervousness. It had been years since I had been with Tommy and now that we were working on things again, I was worried about when this would be brought up. I didn't want to ruin anything by going too fast but I also didn't want him to think that I didn't want to be with him in all ways possible. I wasn't quite sure how to navigate that part of our newly found relationship.
"We will have to map out my scheduled dates and see when we can squeeze in time together. I have pretty much the whole month of January off after Christmas before I start doing some casino runs and shows back on the west coast."
"Anything for a chance to see you with my own eyes." He shifted, leaning in a little closer to the screen. "This is great but I can't wait for the real thing again."
"I know. Only a few more days then I will be seeing you in Seatlle. I can have Shayna schedule a car pick up for you."
"Don't worry about it. I already have that figured out. Speaking of, what do you usually do after your shows?"
"I usually come back to the bus." I replied.
"Do you think you'd be up for a little adventure that night?" A mischievous grin spread over his lips.
"I think I could manage it."
"Good because I have some plans for us that might involve having to ditch your security team. But I think you can handle yourself if the occasion arises."
"What are these so called plans?" I was intrigued by this and a million thoughts ran through my head as to what they could be. Tommy was always surprising me when we dated in high school, even with the smallest yet sweetest romantic gestures.
"Good to see you still hate waiting for surprises." He laughed. I groaned, nodding.
"I sure do. Give it to me, Oliver." I said, pouting. Tommy grinned, scratching his forehead.
"There's something a guy could use to hearing." I looked at him in confusion for a moment before it dawned on me what I had said. An instant blush filled my cheeks and I covered my face with my hands as we both laughed.
"I'm just going to die of embarrassment for a moment." I said though my hands, wishing I wasn't on camera at the moment. Tommy let out a loud belly laugh as my giggles began to subside.
"You still have the cutest laugh on Earth." He said, leaning forward on his elbow. "I've missed it."
"I haven't used it much lately until I found you again." I said, softly. We were silent for a moment, just looking at each other through the computer screens. I wished I was with him. I wanted to feel his arms around me and to hear his laugh in person, not just through the webcam. For a moment, I thought about asking the bus to take me to Angel Grove or the airport. I knew it was silly though and we were still trying to be on our best behavior with the label considering the new additions to my contract. Plus, Shayna would have a heart attack if she knew that I was considering being a flight risk.
"It's getting late, beautiful. You should probably rest up before tomorrow." He said, a tint of sadness in his tone.
"I don't want to hang up with you yet." I said, resting my chin on my knee.
"I have some paperwork to do for a bit if you want to stay on until you fall asleep." He suggested. I turned, looking at the bed. I didn't think he'd be able to see me from there or that I would be able to hear him. I looked at the desk the computer was on and saw it was on wheels.
"Hang on." I said. I unlocked the wheels and slowly pulled the desk with me towards the bed. I was careful of the cord, making sure to not pull them so tight that they wouldn't be able to reach. I backed up until I was right next to the bed, the cord reaching just enough for a little bit more slack. I turned the light off and climbed into bed, pulling my blanket over me. As I laid on the pillow, I could see a tiny version of me glowing a bluish tint from the computer screen.
"Are you comfy?" Tommy asked. I nodded, smiling as I pulled the blanket tighter. Tommy started typing, his focus shifting to the screen as he did.
"What are you writing?"
"A proposal for a grant to help with the repairs." He replied. "Then I need to create a business model for the bank just in case this doesn't go through like I'm hoping."
"Such a business man."
"Not quite but I do my best. Rocky has been helping me."
"How are Rocky and Aisha?" I asked, thinking about what Trini had told me about them when we were fighting.
"They have their days. Right now, they are working with a really good marriage counselor to help them through some stuff. I think they will make it through this but they just have to get past everything right now."
"I'm glad they are doing counseling." I said. "I really hope it works for them."
"Me too. Dr. Klintz is a good therapist. If anyone can fix them, it'll be her." I raised an eyebrow.
"You know their therapist?" I questioned. Tommy nodded, glancing at me.
"Yeah. Kat and I tried therapy before we decided to split up. I was the one that referred them to her."
"Oh." I said softly.
"Is something wrong?" He asked. I shook my head, biting my lips. "Kimberly, c'mon. I know you better than that."
"I guess I just keep forgetting that you were married to Katherine happily at one point. Not that it bothers me because I'm glad. I just…I don't know. It makes me think about the last time I saw her and how guilty it made me feel. Then I didn't see her again until her funeral really."
"You have nothing to feel guilty about." He said. "Kat and I had a good marriage for a very short time. The rest of it was just co-mingling and then making it a safe place for the boys to be until she got sick. We were over before we really started I think."
"I still wish I could have seen her before she passed away. I'd hate to think she passed away thinking I hated her or something. Or that she hated me."
"She didn't hate you. She didn't have that in her. Besides, no one could find it in them to hate you. I promise."
"You never hated me?" I questioned. He smirked again, shaking his head.
"I wouldn't say hated. I was upset and probably more at myself than anything. But no. I didn't hate you. I could never. It's always been quite the opposite, Beautiful. I love you so much that sometimes, it clouded my judgement or made me resent the way things turned out. But I think it's something we're both ready to learn from."
"Me, too." I said, giving him a small smile.
"Good. Now go to sleep. I'll be here if you need me." I listened to Tommy type away at his keyboard until my eye lids grew too heavy to keep open and I drifted off to sleep.
