Undying
An original tale within the Bluey universe By: StorMello "Chapter 6 - Friends in Dark Places"After some time in this bloody civil war, my mind has spaced out more and had more time to think of what I was doing. Seeing all of this madness, I mean…fighting for rights of men with different skin? Honestly, I'd say the world exaggerates for any single thing that happens. But what can I do? I don't control the world…although I'd love to, just to set it on fire for how it is. But still, there are some good things in this world, like nature's views, good qualities of good people, and good friends.
May 12, 1863
As Dustin writes down his point of view on the Battle of Raymond, many of the Union soldiers are celebrating their victory, drinking a bunch of beer and whiskey, as well as eating some good fried chicken the townsfolk made. Apparently, the people thought the Rebels would win; but sadly, the Yanquis won over them this time. As Dustin notices this, he slightly smiles knowing the sweet feel of victory and finishes his note of the battle. Once he's done, he closes his journal and sits some time in the drunk party of the soldiers. But after spending some momentum, he starts to feel anxious to leave and begins breathing heavily. And as this wasn't worse, he starts to feel dizzy and his hearing starts making a ringing sound. But after a complete minute, he gets up immediately and leaves the party, as well as the town to go into the forest; picking along the way his 1853 Enfield and Damascus knife.
As Dustin approaches the forest, he rubs his face and deeply sighs to get his mind off from every thought going through. As he walks deeper into the forest, the noise becomes less and the quiet becomes louder. But as Dustin finally gets some peace from everything, he hears a rustle of leaves behind him, causing Dustin to rapidly grab out his musket and aim at the noise behind him.
"Don' shoot! Don' Shoot! Please, no!," shouts out what appears to be a 16-year old Confederate soldier hiding right beside a tree, and strangely has a strong Aussie accent to him.
"What are you doing here? You fighting for the enemy?," Dustin asks, menacingly pointing his rifle at the kid.
"NO! Well, yes - Bu' I hate it here!"exclaims the frightened 16-year old, "Firs', I ran away from home in Australia t' be here in "Land of Freedom", but this is HELL! And second, I barely fought in the bloody battle, becau….becau…..I….uh"
After hearing the kid, Dustin begins to feel confused from his abnormal talking and begins to get inquisitive.
"What's wrong kid, you're stuttering all of a sudden and you keep fidgeting your fingers. You got some sickness or something?"
"Sorry, I have…..somethin' tha' affects me…mind," the kid pauses to take a breather and regain his spirit, "Doctas don' know wha' it is."
"Oh, I see," Dustin says thoughtfully as he lowers his rifle, "and you truly don't know what is?"
"Nah sadly," the kid responds with a depressed and slow tone, "and I WISH I could."
As Dustin admires the gloomy teen, he then proceeds to think and ask another question in a confused manner, "And what is Australia?"
"BLOODY FUCK, DUSTY! You caught yerself a Rebel Shit out in these parts. Nice spottin'!", shouts out a middle-age Foxhound in Union uniform.
"Yeah, this young squint has been hiding here the whole time. Not made a single sound," answers Dustin in return at the somewhat-drunk dog.
"Welp, kill it. I'd love to see that," demands the Foxhound.
And in accordance, Dustin faces the frightened Kelpie and aims the rifle at his face. As the Kelpie sees this, he becomes shocked and starts pouring some tears seeing what is about to happen to him. But, at the moment of facing Dustin, Dustin nods slightly at the kid, which then follows a swift move of Dustin releasing his gun and pulling his knife out; and then proceeds to slash the knife right into the throat of the old geezer, squirting blood all over the grass. As the kid observes all this in horror, Dustin makes sure to not spill a single drop of blood on the uniform and covers the old man's mouth to not startle anyone who could also be near. Subsequently, the old guy stopped squirming and ceased all movement being made, and once noticed, Dustin drops his dead body on the grass and continues a small talk with the kid.
"What's your name, kid?"
The aghast-filled teen answers, lifting his face in view of Dustin, "Alastor, Alastor Kelp."
Dustin then goes on to clean his knife and save it away, responding to Alastor with a smile, "Welp, Al, I hope you appreciate what I did for you."
In remark, Alastor gives a slight smile and proceeds to quickly take the old man's clothes and wear them, all doing that with fidget-y fingers. After doing so, Alastor gets up from the ground, Dustin puts his hand out and Alastor in reply shakes it, marking the start of a good friendship.
And after meeting Al, we always had each other's back, no matter what we faced. We went into battle with no fear, knowing that we protected one another. And there was one moment when all looked lost, but because of us, we made the battle glorious.
November 25, 1863
As Dustin and Al close up on Confederate lines, they await in their cover and use any opportunity they can to fire back. As Dustin seems to do pretty fine, it has been hard to take care of a kid with a literal mental illness; but still, Dustin tries everything he can. And once again, Al begins to dig his face in the palms of his face and shakes uncontrollably, with Dustin trying to comfort him in the attempt. But as doing so, Al looks up in confusion and stares at Dustin's head strangely.
"What's wrong?"Dustin asks, tilting his head in confusion and his ears go to the side.
"Are ya' wearin' a bonnet on yer head?"Al answers with another question and continues to look harshly at him.
Dustin slowly shakes his head, letting Al know that he's doing it…again.
"Sorry," apologizes the red Kelpie in embarrassment.
After a minute of listening to artillery bombing and gunfire in every direction, three more Union soldiers come out of nowhere and hide in the same small crater as Dustin and Al, all in fear and frustration.
"This is fucked, we're not getting anywhere like this," exclaims a Dark-skinned Chinook, all in anger from the battle not being carried out according to plan.
"Might as well dig up my grave and send myself 6 inches deep, into blood and mud," adds another dog, a white Eskimo with an Irish accent.
As the group stays there in the hole, whilst the noise of firearms and cannons boost out other sounds, more men come out into the crater, finding refuge from all destruction and pain. But upon seeing this, Dustin knows that they can't stay for long, and will eventually end up going out there to fight through the clouds of smoke and puddles of red liquid. And after evaluating the situation, he thought of one thing to do only, and lift their spirits up. He starts singing…
Away down South, in the land…of traitors
Rattlesnakes and alligators
Right away *breathes loudly*
Come away, Right away
Come awa—-y
With Dustin singing softly but passionately, the other soldiers recognized the song and, while the majority decided to stay quiet and rather ignorant, the Chinook sang in his best voice slowly and did so with true spirit.
Chinook: Where cotton's king and men are chattels
Union boys will win…the battles
Right away, (two soldiers softly - right away)
Come away, (come away)
Right away, (right away)
Come awa—-y
Then the Chinook then proceeds to demand at the soldiers with a vulgar tone, "COME ON BOYS! SING TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT!" Then with such command, the rest of the soldiers there began to sing and at the original speed of the song, letting all they had go out onto the battlefield, for it to be all heard with joy.
Everyone: We'll all go down to Dixie, away, away
Each Dixie boy must understand that he must mind his Uncle Sam
Away (Dustin and Al - away)
Away (away)
We'll all go down to Dixie
Away (away)
Away (away)
We'll all go down to Dixie

With such spirit filled in the Union soldiers, Dustin orders to charge into battle and all the brave men grab their musket and ram into enemy lines, stabbing each Rebel fighter on the other side. With this result of determination and teamwork, the Confederacy are taken by surprise, losing morale from seeing their soldiers picked off one-by-one and losing their canon men. Many tried fighting back, but were lost against the now hopeful small troop of Union fighters with spirit and blood-hunger. And in the midst of this battle, lies Dustin and Al, charging right into the hearts of the Rebel soldiers and stripping them of their power. Al then breaks out saying, "We should do this all the time!" Dustin then bursts out laughing at this hysterical comment made from Al, and goes on winning the battle over the Confederate bastards. And after the time passed, it went down to Dustin charging his bayonet into an enemy and pounding him right into the ground, clearing the area and ending the battle.
(Song should end now)
And with that, Al and I were able to push the Rebel bitches more into their lands, all thanks to the good lads who helped us fight in this great collision. But sadly, many great things always have their downfall, as I have learned in my trip through the Napoleonic Wars; and the downfall of this beautiful relationship was when we both got transferred to the IX Corps, the corps that would lead thousands to agony. And went as follows…
May 24, 1864
"Men, get ready to charge!", ordered the drunk General James H. Ledlie, as everyone got up and readied their rifles. Dustin, on the other hand, had different thoughts about the new management brought into the corps.
Honestly, doesn't anyone else think that this so-called "general" is even worthy of being in this position? But alas, what can we say against high authority in this world? Absolutely Nothing.
"Bayonets!", roared the befuddled general, grabbing his cavalry saber and gripping it tightly to give the order. And as commanded, the rest of the soldiers begin to adjust their bayonet knife onto their rifles and anticipate further instruction. Dustin and Al wait ever so patiently, but terrified at the moment, seeing that their general is an intoxicated asshole with serious problems. They wait…and wait…and—"CHARGE!"
At once, each fighter pushed out of their positions and commenced sprinting towards the Rebels base, others being brave, whilst others terrified. Between the conflict, the Rebels sent up men as well, being twice more than what the Union sent. Dustin, noticing this, decides to stop, and feels a little something hit him in the soldier, then…*drop*
A drop of water, and that meant only one thing, which was…*thunder*
"Oh no," Dustin looks up worryingly, seeing the pickle they were about to get into. And as Dustin attempts to run for Al, unaware what's going on, a storm starts pouring in and ends up blocking the vision of many soldiers, leaving everyone in a conundrum. Many start ramming and pushing into each other, whilst others begin to trip or fall down because of the harsh weather making visibility a complication. And with the difficult mix-up they got into, Dustin begins to hear men screaming from every direction, a confusing mixture of Rebel war cries and Union blood-curdling screeches. Dustin starts spinning in circles, aiming his weapon slightly not knowing where to take a shot; if north, east, west, or even south?
And as Dustin is stuck in his position, he then begins to see a figure running out of the hard rain, making him quickly turn to the ally or foe closing in. But it turns out to be none other than Alastor, all terrified and covered in mud, which gave Dustin some relief. Then with a sudden surprise, A Rebel soldier comes out and pounces on top of Al with his rifle and attempts to strike his bayonet knife into the heart of the now-screaming Al. Consequently, Dustin aims his rifle and pulls the trigger at the Rebel scum…*click*
SHIT! GUN'S JAMMED! With the malfunctioning result, Dustin rapidly turns the rifle upside-down and swishes it at the Rebel, causing the enemy to get off Al and fall to the ground, just for the Rebel to quickly get up and pull his Bowie knife from his pocket. Seeing the result, Dustin drops his rifle and pulls his Damascus knife to confront the blood-thirsty enemy, leaving the battle to turn into a melee fight.
Opening the brawl, the Rebel throws himself at the enemy, striking the knife at the area of the heart; although clearly missing the first blow by Dustin dodging it and grabbing the Rebel from the back. And then proceeds to knock down the Rebel, attempting to draw his knife into the rival's back. But from the sheer strength of the Rebel, he turns around quickly and catches Dustin's hands in the millisecond of the act, leaving the two in a stalemate and the knife in the air. But after a solid minute of the staredown…*gunshot*
Turns out Al took the Rebel's rifle and shot a direct fire into the head of the enemy, killing the Rebel right in a jiffy. This led to Dustin taking his breath and giving a hopeful look to Al, smiling slightly all with exhaustion. Then, as they had their scene, someone in the distance yelled out, "FALL BACK! EVERYONE FALL BACK!" And instantly, Dustin and Al immediately get back running back to their base, where the rain as well cleared up.
And after that instance, I knew something big was going to happen; something that was going to change from this point on. This is where Hell Has Busted.
July 30, 1864
"It's fired up," quietly yells one of the miners coming from the tunnel under Confederate base. As the miner goes on to hide, every single soldier is on the ground, waiting anxiously for the greatest explosion to happen at enemy trenches. Dustin and Al are contrary to their feelings, having a more terrified emotion of what is to occur. Dustin, with seriousness, thinks about the battle over and over again, wondering if the same thing is going to happen to them again. Meanwhile Al, completely in nervousness, is singing to himself, trying to calm his nervous state and feeling of edginess. Noticing this, Dustin decides to ask about the song, stating, "What you singing?"
"Nothin' really, just 'n ole song me Mother taught me when little. Pretty borin' if yer ask me."
Dustin with curiosity says, "Let me hear it."
"Hmm, alrigh," Al responds as he begins to sing the little melody slowly.
One man went to mow, went to mow a meadow
One man and his dog *barks faintly*
Went to mow a meadow
*Deep breath* Two went to mow, went to mow a meadow
Two men, one man, and his dog *bar—EXPLOSION*
At the literal moment Al barks, one of the biggest explosions Dustin ever experiences goes off, sending a great cloud of flame into the air and Rebel bodies being thrown into every direction. One of the most horrific sights Dustin is seeing for the first time, and it won't be the last. Once the explosion goes out and there's a great amount of debris everywhere, the general orders everyone to attack straight on and not turn back. As commanded, all the soldiers start getting up and begin fearlessly running straight at the base, ramming into whoever was in their way. Dustin and Al, both side-by-side, start sprinting as well, trying as hard not to tackle or trip anyone in front of them. And as they get to the Rebel base, Dustin begins to think the battle as an easy victory, but victory doesn't come easy, as the soldiers get there and find a 30-foot dirt wall covering their path to triumph.
"Oh no," Dustin whispers, knowing damn well the battle was going to go the wrong way around. So to avoid such catastrophe, he attempts to retreat but only gets pushed against the wall by other soldiers and gets cramped into the conflict.
"AL! AL!"Dustin yells out, losing sight of where Al is; completely making Dustin get worried and frustrated. And within the blink of an eye, gunfire is heard from above, with Rebel bastards crying out in joy and yelling out, "It's a turkey shoot!" Seeing the conflict escalate, Dustin begins pushing soldiers to make way and search for Al in the crowded bunch. But after a solid 10 minutes searching, Dustin began hearing more gunfire and saw someone blown right in front of him from artillery cannons, causing Dustin to remember his past with Emilien in France. Now more desperate to find Al, Dustin calls out more for Al, and in return, gets thrown a Rebel soldier at him. Although, within a second, Dustin kills him instantly since he had his knife out first, and yet, more Rebel soldiers started going down as well to face head-on in the crater. And with each new rival going down the crater, Dustin becomes more worrisome of Al, but finally finds him in a dire situation. Turns out Al has been fighting a Rebel scum bare-handed with no weapon and seemed to be stuck grabbing the rifle of the enemy aiming at his stomach, and sadly, Al isn't strong enough and gets the knife of the rifle impaled into his stomach, causing him to let out a blood-curdling scream of pain. In effect, Dustin rushes over and pounds his knife into the throat of Rebel and knocking him to the ground, leaving the bastard coughing in his own blood and speechless. Right after doing so, Dustin then goes to help Al, checking the wound he has in the stomach area, which was in a grave state. Dustin saw the wound spilling so much blood and had the poor Al screaming in total agony.
"I'M GONNA DIE, I'M GONNA DIE, I'M GONNA DIE!"Al kept yelling out, fearful of the thought of death taking him.
"You're not going to die!"Dustin proceeds to drag Al with him backwards in direction towards Union base, "You're going to be all good once you're patched!"
But no matter how much Dustin tried, Al kept squirming in pain and couldn't move for anything, leaving Dustin to drop him and cover him from any more fire. Dustin, being on top of Al, hears a few words spoken from him in his bloody state, being, "I'm sorry…Mom…*coughs blood*...guess I won' be…your brave…Australian…Kelpie."
"Al?! AL?!"Dustin then proceeds to lightly slap Al's face, trying all to keep him alive. And that's when Al whispers something to Dustin that hints him of the future, which was, "You're there Dustin, keep going." And with that, Al's head drops down on the side, leaving him breathless and with no movement further. Dustin, now in thought, starts to shed some tears and begins to sit up, making him see the cruelty that dogkind does to each other. How different colored dogs fight the racist Rebel dogs of the Confederacy. How one kills one with a rifle, while others with a knife to the throat. And seeing this, Dustin proceeds to grab a revolver next to him and see how many bullets there were, one. One bullet for one dog. Without looking, he loads the bullet into position and aims it at the side of his head, saying his last few words to himself.
Put my heart, in a bag
And nobody, gets, HURT.

Darkness. Nothing but darkness is what I heard after I pulled the trigger. No sight of my dead, miserable body. No sound of the gun pushing through my mind and out of the skull. That's all I saw in the end…Darkness. And what I was about to see was not something I wanted to go through. Something that was going to scar me for the rest of my life. Something…through MUD and BLOOD. Welcome to The Great War, WORLD WAR 1!
(This is optional, but there is an ending song for this chapter, which is Robbery by Juice Wrld. I'd prefer the slowed version, but the original works either way. Enjoy!)
P.S. - There's the surprise! Actually, it was supposed to be the song, but the words were a complete surprise to me! 3,583! I was on something when making this, like, this just came as a surprise to me, honestly. But still, hope you enjoyed this and the additional songs added in here, and will see you hopefully next week, if not, the week after next week, since it took me extra days to make this chapter. Until next time…
