Chapter 6
"Good grief," Bruno shook his head once Fin and Klass had updated the group.
"I looked up Makayla Powell," Rollins announced from her desk. The medical examiner wouldn't be able to access everything from her office but she definitely wouldn't have had access to what the blonde had found.
"What's up?" Fin asked.
"Makayla went missing from New Jersey in twenty seventeen. A tri-state alert was put out, which is why we have some preliminary info," Rollins explained.
"Give me the number. I'll make a call. Meantime, Fin, call Huang. We need an expert opinion and luckily, we won't have to worry about the FBI, just yet," Olivia told him. Fin nodded and grabbed his phone. The former FBI agent still helped out when he could along with his private practice.
"You think that we'll be able to keep the FBI out of this?" Klass turned to Rollins.
"Maybe. If Jersey doesn't play nice, then no," the blonde said.
"Why wouldn't they play nicely? We found her here," Churlish spoke up.
"Well given what has happened – we know the perp has to live near the cemetery which means that he's not from Jersey – at least not recently. However, they might not want us to take things over because we'd have to travel into Jersey to ask questions of the mother and get a look at their case files," Rollins figured.
"Some cops can be that way, but given the fact that she's been missing for six years and they haven't cracked the case… I would think they'd want the help," Bruno said.
"Well, whether they play ball or not, Huang will be on his way in. he said to give him an hour," Fin let the group know.
"Seems that my Captain was right to allow me to stay. We've got a bigger cluster on our hands than we thought," Klass frowned.
"You can say that again," Olivia announced from the doorway of her office.
"What's up?" Rollins asked.
"Well, the first thing they asked was if we had found Makayla's mom, Diane, too," the Captain heaved a sigh.
"Crap," Klass shook her head.
"So, there's a good chance our sicko had Makayla and Diane and then took Nicole and Darlene when he got bored," Bruno frowned.
"I'm afraid so. Detective Scott Gonzales is coming up to see us. The case was given to him during the pandemic, which made it hard to work, especially since he's working it by himself," Olivia explained.
"No cold case money huh? Why am I not surprised?" Rollins struggled to get out of her chair and Klass and Churlish helped her steady herself.
"No chance I can get one of you to go to the bathroom for me?" The blonde teased. Klass chuckled and helped her toward the ladies room.
"I give you credit for coming into work. How far along?" the Queen SVU detective asked.
"I still have about two months to go," Rollins admitted as they entered the bathroom. Klass let her go and then promised to be out in the hall to give the detective some privacy. It was a large bathroom, but no one else was in there at the moment.
A few minutes later, the pregnant detective exited the room, holding her belly. She gave the Queens detective a smile.
"I swear this kid is sitting on my bladder," Rollins said.
"That's not a great place to be," Klass chuckled as they made their way back to the bullpen.
"I'm swearing off kids after this one. Three is enough," Rollins told her.
"Yeah, that is a good number. They must miss you when you're at work," Klass said.
"The older ones are pretty well into a routine but they do miss me and I miss them. The perps aren't going to catch themselves though," the Manhattan SVU figured.
"No, they don't," Klass heaved a sigh.
"Anyone waiting on you at home? Someone you can share the burden with?" Rollins wondered.
"Just my German Shepard, Betty," the brunette admitted.
"Good place to start," the blonde smiled.
