Author's Note: This all came from a word that I fell in love with. Aprosexia: the inability to concentrate. I just had to use it for this story. This halo may be shorter than the previous ones but there are some important parts this week. This week was hard to focus but now I am back on track. We have two more weeks until the Christmas special. There is one more halo before we get there. After the Christmas special, there is going to be one more halo. I have another one lined up on their first Wednesday in Janurary. Plus, we have to wrap-up Wonderland Bites on Christmas Eve. That is going to be a lot. For now, enjoy this week's halo.
Halo Twenty: Aprosexia:
There are so many distractions everywhere. So much sleight of hand going on this winter. It adds to the inability to concentrate. So many of us are constantly getting distracted. Distraction is easy, but getting back on track is harder to do.
Akari frowned over her books.
"Damn it!" she shouted. The witch leaned back in her chair. This wasn't working and she couldn't figure out why. Actually, that was a lie. Akari knew the reason.
She reached over for her phone and opened up the Dollars website. She opened the messenger app. Oh, good. He was online. Akari took a breath and started typing.
"Mikado-kun, are you awake?"
She sat back and waited.
"Come on, come on."
Taro Tanaka is typing.
Akari sat up straight. Her heart started pounding against her chest. She took in long, slower breaths to calm down.
Taro Tanaka: Yes.
FireMoon Witch: I need to see you.
Taro Tanaka is typing.
Taro Tanaka: Why, what's wrong?
Akari waited with bated breath. At the same time, she cursed herself. Why was she acting like this? Mikado was just a man. A man with godlike abilities. Pretty much god in human flesh. Akari's cheeks felt like they were getting hot. She smacked herself in the cheek.
"Come on! Get it together, Akari! You are better than this! Cut it out!" she said to herself. When she looked at her screen, she was ready to type her response. The witch took her time and typed out a response.
FireMoon Witch: I need to see you.
Taro Tanaka: What do you mean?
FireMoon Witch: Can I please come over?
Taro Tanaka: I'm not at my apartment.
Akari stared at the screen, confused. She was about to ask when she noticed more text following behind. She held her breath for a second.
Taro Tanaka: I am going to send you the address of where I am now.
The witch stared at the screen as the address popped up. That was all it took.
FireMoon Witch: I will be right there.
The witch teleported out of her room.
There have been another string of murders happening around Ikebukuro. They first began in early October. Twenty-eight delinquents had been found slashed to death. All of the cuts were clean like down with a katana. All of them had their throats, arms, torsos, and legs were all cut up. They all laid bloody heaps on the ground. The police couldn't figure it out at first.
That was until a witness came forward on December eleventh.
She was a twenty-four-year-old hostess who was being harassed by three wannabe yakuza thugs. The woman sat at the table, still trembling from what she saw last night.
"Okay, from the top. Tell me what you saw," the cop said. The hostess kept her eyes on the table.
"Y-Y-You wouldn't believe me," she said.
"Try me," he said. "I just want to know what happened." She lifted her gaze toward him.
"It was my first night on the job," the woman said. "Everything was going well. I was a bit nervous at first. However, the customers took to me easily. I thought I was going to have an easy night." She began to frown.
"And then my ex came into the club," she said. "I don't know how he found me. I thought I was so careful."
"Why is that?"
"We went through a nasty break-up. He didn't take to being dumped too well. He threatened my friends and my family. He tried to intimidate me into getting back with him. I finally couldn't take it anymore and ran away."
"So what happened?"
"My ex and his friends dragged me to the alley in the back. He pinned me against the wall. They started asking why I wouldn't get back with him. I tried to push them off but they wouldn't let go. I prayed for someone to come and save me." The hostess wiped away her tears.
"So how did you get away?"
"There was a man."
"A man?"
"I think it was a man. I couldn't tell."
"What did he look like?"
"I don't know. Black cloak with a cane."
"Anything else?"
"He had on this white Noh mask."
"A what now?"
"A Noh mask. He had on a white Noh mask."
"And you are sure about this?"
"Yes."
"Okay, okay. He had on a Noh mask. What happened next?"
"He just stood there. My ex got annoyed and started yelling at him. He and his friends crowded around the man. The whole time the man in the mask didn't say a word. Then he reached up two fingers and swung them around in the arm like he was driving out a demon. The next thing I knew, my ex and his friends all fell to pieces."
"So what did you do?"
"I freaked out and ran back into the building. My boss was the one who called the police. He gave us the rest of the night off. I went home, took a shower, and went to bed."
"And did the man say anything at all?"
"No."
The cop finished up with his notes. He looked up and smiled. "Okay. Thank you for your time."
"Thank you, sir." She bowed and left the interrogation room.
"Oh look who's decided to grace us with his presence! Hello Yami. What brings you by? Did you finally get over your tech phobia?"
"Sylar, leave him alone."
"Please leave me alone. I am just getting used to this app."
"Nah, it's fine. I'm just messing with you, man."
"What did I miss?"
"Not much. DK just has a little problem."
"Why? What's wrong?"
"I don't who to pick for sowers of discord. I had someone but he's dead already."
"Orihara Izaya?"
"Yeah. Such a shame, really."
"Yeah."
"So who did you have in mind?"
"I don't know."
"Are you going after the yakuza again?"
"Nah. I'm going to give them a rest."
"So what are you going to do?"
"I don't know."
"I have an idea of who you can kill."
"Oh?"
"Here are their names."
Mika couldn't wait anymore. She had to see what was waiting for her in that box waiting for her. The girl cuddled up next to Seiji.
"Seiji," she said. "Take me somewhere." Her fake boyfriend turned with a stoic look on his face.
"Why?" he asked. Mika looked up at him and pouted.
"There's somewhere I have to go," she said.
"But Celty said that we can't go out," Seiji said. Mika looked up at him, pouting.
"I can't go alone," she said. "I will have you with me. Please?" She was now in front of him. Her legs were wrapped around his waist.
"Where do you need to go?" Seiji asked. Mika looked him in the eye. She ran her finger in circles on his chest.
"Take me to this mailbox on Otome Road," she said. Seiji raised his eyebrow.
"Why do you want to go there?" he asked.
"There's something I have to see," Mika said. Her tone became so serious. She kept her gaze on her boyfriend.
Mika left a note for Celty and the others.
"It won't take long, I promise," she said. Seiji said nothing as she hung on his arm. Mika started to list the directions in her head. This was going to be the real test. She looked up the directions beforehand. Now, she was going to have to see if she could get to the mailbox without looking at her phone again.
"It's so quiet out here," Mika said. Seiji didn't say anything.
"You sure about this?" he asked.
"Uh-huh!" she said. So far, everything was going great. Despite the lack of people around, nothing looked out of the ordinary. This wasn't going to take too long. All Mika had to do was go to the mailbox, unlock the box, get whatever was inside, and get back to Celty and Shinra's apartment.
Suddenly, a shimmer filled her eyes. Mika rubbed her right eye.
"Something wrong?" Seiji asked.
"No," she lied. "It's nothing. It's nothing." Her vision cleared up. Mika pushed herself to focus. She knew what that was. The Chuku was on the move again. This time, they are after a girl about seventeen years old. Mika wanted to shout at her to run. But the would-be victim can't hear her.
No! She couldn't focus on that. The girl had a mission on her own. Mika tried to push away the shimmer from her eyes.
The couple came up to the crosswalk.
"Is this the place?" Seiji asked. Mika looked up as she rubbed her head.
"Yes! Yes! There it is!" she shouted. Her boyfriend turned to look at what she was seeing.
"There's nothing there," he said. "Why did we come here?" Mika let go of her boyfriend and ran across the street.
"Mika?" Seiji asked. She ran to the red mailbox waiting for her. Her vision kept having that shimmer. More of the Chuku's victims kept popping up in her vision. Each of them being drained. They were still alive but empty. She wanted to scream at them to run away. But they can't hear her. She can only see what Chuku sees.
The girl tried to push its vision out of her head.
"Get out of my head!" she shouted. She pushed herself to keep going. The mailbox was right in front of her. Mika pulled out the key and unlocked it. She pulled down the door. Inside, was a thumb drive. The girl reached inside and took it out.
"I got it!" Mika shouted. "I got it! Let's get going! Let's go!" Seiji and Mika didn't stop running until they made it back to Celty and Shinra's apartment.
Akari made it to Michiko's apartment. She drew a breath and knocked on the door. Marin greeted her at the door.
"Oh, hello, Akari," she said. The witch took a step back.
"Marin," she said. "Let me guess, you were drawn here too?"
"Yeah," she said, nodding.
"Is Mikado in?" Akari asked.
"He's in his room," Marin said. She backed away from the door to let him in. The witch followed her into the apartment.
Mikado now had three girls under the same roof with him. One of them had a baby on the way. He looked down at Akari and Marin in his lap. The tadpole shook his head. Things were starting to repeat themselves again. He just let himself get distracted from breaking the cycle.
There are so many distractions. No one is really paying attention to Chisa winning her election. No one is paying attention to Byakko making her move.
No one is paying attention to winter swallowing them whole.
