Zeffre leaped over the street with her boost pack. The cool night air rushed across her grinning face as she was airborne, blue hair fluttering in the wind. Landing on opposite rooftop she continued running over the buildings.

Retrieving the Scroll strapped to her waist she pulled up the tracking application she had programmed for it a few days ago. 'Okay Roman… Where are you going', she thought as she continued her run. He was in the commercial district, so Zeffre was almost certain he was taking part in a heist. But which store? Reaching the end of the block she saw that he was already inside of a building.

'From Dust Till Dawn? Clever name.' Just as she was preparing to jump down from the rooftop the window to the store shattered outwards; one of Roman's men flying out into the street. 'Huh? What's going on here?'

There was a girl standing out there. From her position Zeffre couldn't see too many details about her beyond her red hood and cloak. Her weapon on the other hand…

"What is up with these people having the coolest freaking weapons", she said to herself in awe. The girl's weapon folded out into a beautiful red scythe in a symphony of mechanical brilliance. Watching her fight was like watching a performance. The girl was quick, moving to engage the rest of the men with a speed that was surprising. And… Oh? Her scythe was also a gun? She was using it's recoil to propel herself, dodging the men's shots.

Stepping out of the store a man wearing white was talking to the girl. That must be Roman considering the different outfit. Zeffre couldn't hear what they were saying, but she was able to see Roman point his cane at the girl in red… 'His cane is also a gun? How many objects in this world are also guns', she thought, watching as Roman fired an explosive round at the girl in red. She was fine. In the short amount of time she was recovering Roman was already scampering off to a ladder on the side of a building.

Sitting down to enjoy the show Zeffre watched as some twin-engine aircraft came to pick Roman up, flying low between the buildings to get to him. "Wait, what's going on now", she said to herself, watching as an older blond woman showed up to back up the girl in red.

From her position on the roof Zeffre could see straight into the cockpit of the aircraft. More importantly, she could see that whoever was piloting switch seats with Roman. Smirking at an idea she just had, Zeffre fired a bolt of starlight from her left hand straight up as a flare to draw his attention. The second Roman's green eyes made contact with her blues she broke out into a grin while waving.

Zeffre's grin widened as she saw the emotions flash on his face. From concentrated to confused to recognition to annoyed. Using one hand to hold the stick in place Roman gave her the middle finger with his other hand, which was enough to send Zeffre doubling over in laughter.

Wiping away the tears in her eyes Zeffre watched curious as the blond woman and the other passenger on the aircraft had, well, had a magic duel. One was conjuring pillars of fire, and the other summoned ice spikes to impact the roof of the aircraft. "Huh. I guess magic exist here… Neat", she said. Not that she considered her own powers to be magical in nature. They were from incredibly advanced technology that nobody understood, which is totally different from magic.

With one final clash they disengaged, Roman giving her one last glare before the aircraft flew off.

Watching the aircraft fly off into the distance Zeffre had only one immediate course of action. 'I need to ask that girl about her weapon', she thought before boosting into the air. Using a grav dash to position herself above the roof with the blond woman and the red girl she gracefully dropped, landing right next to the two of them.

"Young lady do you… ", the blond woman was scolding the red girl about something before trailing off as Zeffre landed right next to them. The girl in red was looking down.

Zeffre gave both of them a brilliant smile. "Hiya!"

"Uh. Hi", said the girl in red.

"Good evening", the blond woman said as she adjusted her glasses. Her eyes narrowed a fraction as she saw Zeffre's armor. "You must be that vigilante."

"Yup. I'm Zeffre. Nice to meet 'cha", she said, holding her hand out to the girl in red.

The girls dower expression was quickly replaced with a smile at the extended hand. "Nice to meet you Zeffre. I'm Ruby", she said shaking the offered hand, matching Zeffre's enthusiasm.

"Well Ruby, I just wanted to tell you that you were awesome down there! The way you took those guys out was amazing, with your speed and the way you handled your scythe! It was honestly one of the coolest things I have ever seen", she said, trying and failing to hide her awe.

Ruby blinked owlishly at first before a faint blush spread across her cheeks. "Oh that? That wasn't anything special, just thing's my uncle taught me at Signal", she said as she sheepishly scratched the back of her head.

"Not anything special? Are you kidding? That was ama—"

"Ahem."

Looking over at the blond woman with glasses Zeffre felt a slight amount of embarrassment. "Oh, sorry. I never asked for your name miss…"

"Glynda Goodwitch."

"… Hell of a name", Zeffre muttered before realizing she said that out loud. She gave a nervous laugh as Glynda stared back at her.

"Me and Ruby Rose here were about to head to the VPD station, and I'd like you to come along", Glynda said, her tone authoritative.

"Uh, why do you want me to go with you to the station?"

"Because there is a standing order out that they want to ask you some questions about your actions these past few weeks."

"Oh? Well, won't you look at the time", Zeffre said as she looked at the imaginary watch on her wrist. "It was nice meeting you Ruby, Miss Goodwitch, but I've gotta jet", she said as she walked towards the edge of the building.

From behind her she heard, "If you come with us Ruby can tell you more about 'Harbinger'".

Freezing midstride Zeffre turned around to look at the two of them again. Ruby was looking at Glynda confused. "Why would she want to know more about Uncle Qrow's weapon."

What? 'How does she know about that?'

"Wait, Ruby. Your Uncle is Qrow? Drunk guy, red eyes, black hair?"

"Yep."

"Deal."

Sitting in the backseat of the police car Zeffre was bored.

Looking over she saw that Ruby was looking down again. 'Probably her first time being in a police car.' "So… Ruby. I think your scythe is really neat", she said.

Looking up from the floor she looked at the officer driving them to the station before looking back at Zeffre. "I don't think we're allowed to talk", she said quietly.

'Yep, she's nervous.' Giving her a smile Zeffre looked over to the officer. "Hey, do you mind if we talk? I mean, it's not like we're under arrest or anything", she said.

The officer took a sip from his coffee, eyes never leaving the road. "Huh? Oh, yeah, don't mind me. We'll be at the station in a few minutes anyway", he said sounding a bit tired.

"Long day?"

"Yup. My shift ends in half an hour, but since I'm the lead officer who responded to the call of the robbery I'll need to stay a bit later to finish the paperwork."

"That sucks."

"Yeah, well, what can you do? Honestly though, if you hadn't stopped Torchwick from escaping with the Dust it would have been even more paperwork. Thanks for that by the way."

'Perfect.' "Oh me? I didn't do anything this time; my friend Ruby here is the one who stopped the robbery. You should've seen her, kid has some serious skill with her scythe", she said, gesturing over to a furiously blushing Ruby.

"I… uh… it really wasn't anything special. I just… knew I needed to help", she said quietly.

Stopping at a red light the officer looked back at them. "Hey, stepping in to help someone else isn't nothing. That takes bravery and decisive action", he said before giving Ruby a smile. "You planning on becoming a huntress someday Ruby?"

"Absolutely", she said with an enthusiastic nod of her head.

"Then you're already off to a good start", the man said, giving her one last smile before looking back to wait on the light.

Glancing over Zeffre saw that Ruby at least didn't look so down anymore. Placing a hand on her shoulder Zeffre looked her in the eyes. "Seriously, you did great", she said with an uncharacteristic amount of sincerity.

With Ruby looking less like a kicked puppy Zeffre decided to enjoy the rest of the car ride to the station in peace, leaning her head against the glass of the window. 'I can ask about Harbinger and her scythe later.'

Zeffre rested her head on the cool metal of the table.

"I've told you five times already; I have no idea where those guys' things went. I stopped robberies and left", she whined face down on the interrogation room table.

A single light hanging directly over the table illuminated the space as the detective reclined in his chair. "So, is it your story that nothing was taken from those men?"

"Yes."

"And it is just a coincidence that only the robberies you stopped are the ones where the perpetrators were robbed?"

"Coincidence, divine intervention, poor luck, pick your poison, but I am telling you I never took anything from those men."

The detective opened a folder before sliding a piece of paper across to her. "We have signed statements from the store owners that you were seen taking objects from those men."

'No good deed left unpunished', she thought, lifting her head to glance over the paper. "They were under a lot of stress and trauma! They had just been robbed at gunpoint; in that state they don't know what they saw. I'm telling you that I have no idea where those men's belongings are, and that is the god's honest truth", she lied.

The detective gave a hum as he slid another piece of paper across the table. "And this?"

Zeffre inspected the paper and saw that it was a photo from a security camera. It was of her waving towards the camera as she had a bunch of the men's gear in her other arm.

"… That, uh, isn't me."

'Something's off about this interrogation', she thought, looking at the detective's amused smirk. 'I refuse to believe that anybody actually cares that I stole from armed robbers. And this detective is a bit too friendly… what am I missing?'

"Hypothetically, if that were me, would I be in trouble", she asked flipping over the photo.

There was a knock at the door. The detective gave a small chuckle at her question before standing up to go answer it. Someone spoke to the man outside in the hall, he nodded, and shut the door before walking back. "No, you're not in trouble", he said. "But, there is somebody here that would like to speak to you if that is alright."

Rasing her eyebrow Zeffre squinted at the man. "That sounds… good? Okay, I'll speak to them", she said. 'Who would want to speak to me?'

"I'll send them right in", the detective said as he made his way to the door. "Oh, by the way kid, good work out there", he said, giving her a smile as he stood at the door.

Zeffre gave him a smile back, "Thanks!"

As he stepped out of the room Zeffre let out a small sigh of relief before slumping back into her seat. 'Who would want to see me?'

A few minutes later the door opened and in stepped a man with silver hair, sharp facial features and wearing spectacles. Well dressed. He was carrying two mugs with him.

Zeffre had never seen this man before in her entire life.

Approaching the table, he set down one of the mugs near her… Coffee? Sitting up in her chair, she looked at the mug before looking back at the man, tilting her head slightly. Shrugging she took the offered cup and gulped some of the coffee down. 'Not bad.'

Looking over her mug she staired at the man as he took the seat across from her. Who was he, and why was he here? Glancing over to the one-way mirror Zeffre had an idea on how to test a hunch.

Setting the mug down and her left hand on the table she tapped a finger on the metal, sending motes of starlight out from the impact. The man stopped to watch her. Around her she saw the outlines of the other people in the building illuminated with starlight. More importantly, she saw that there was someone standing on the opposite side of the one-way mirror watching them. Female, rigid posture, arms crossed over her chest. Smirking Zeffre turned to look this person in the eyes from her side of the mirror before waving. "Hi Glynda", she said, her smile widening as the figure jumped a little.

"Interesting ability", the man said as he set his mug on the table. His voice was measured, warm.

Zeffre leaned back on her chair, balancing it on the two back legs. "Thanks. I get that a lot", she said, crossing her hands behind her head.

The man pulled out a Scroll and began swiping through it, looking for something.

"How do you know Qrow", she asked, trying to not fall backwards.

At this the man stopped, looking up at her with a raised eyebrow. "What makes you think I know somebody named Qrow", he asked.

"Because it isn't a coincidence that Glynda knew I'd love to learn more about Harbinger, just as it isn't a coincidence that she is standing right there", she pointed to Glynda through the one-way mirror, "watching us talk." She narrowed her eyes, "Just like it wasn't a coincidence that I meet someone like Qrow in the first place."

With a small smile the man went back to his Scroll.

"Zeffre was it? You've been busy these last few weeks. From stopping armed robberies to… helping old ladies cross the street. Before this time, however, there are no records of your existence", he said as he read through some files. "And the way you fight", at this point he placed the Scroll down onto the table as it played a video. It was security footage of her different fights. In one video she decloaked right next to a group of men right about to break into a store. In another she sent a group of men flying through the air with a grav push. Something she noticed about the video was how each snippet of it was of her using a different power. 'Someone's been doing research.'

With a slam her chair was back on four legs, Zeffre resting one arm on the table to support her head.

"What can I say? I'm a busy little bee."

The man took a sip from his mug. "Tell me Zeffre, what do you know about Grimm?"

'Where's this going?' "I know a little about them", she shrugged. "How they attack only people, and some other things I've seen mentioned on the news."

The man took another sip from his mug as he reached over and tapped the Scroll to play the next video. It was a video of a town getting attacked. Zeffre had heard about such attacks on the news, about how monsters would come out from the woods and kill whoever they could. This was different. Different scenes of the attack were shown, with people in panic as they tried to escape. Graphic scenes of people being torn apart, or with large chunks bitten out of them. She watched intently. The video was silent, but she could hear the screams. She could feel her body tensing, her jaw locking as she watched the video play out.

There is something especially terrible about watching old footage where innocent people die. The feeling of anger and helplessness knowing for a fact that there is nothing you can do to help them now. Zeffre closed her eyes and let out a sigh.

She could just choose to not view those people as people. To take solace in the fact that, in a cosmic sense, their lives didn't matter. It would be so easy too. But that wasn't who she was. Not anymore.

Looking down at her arm her eyes traced the lines and arcs of her Venator armor, the meaning as inscrutable to her as ever.

Looking up she saw that the man was watching her. "Do you know who I am", he asked.

"No."

"My name is Ozpin. I am the Headmaster of Beacon Academy, a combat school that specializes in teaching people how to kill monsters", he said as he reached over to retrieve the Scroll, still frozen on the final image of the attack. "To prevent things like that from happening."

Zeffre was watching the man intently as he spoke.

"What I have heard and seen about you has made me believe that your talents are wasted acting as a vigilante of the night, and I would like to ask you a question", he said staring back into her eyes. "Would you like to kill monsters."

"Yes", her response was immediate.

"In that case I would like to make you an offer. Would you like to join my school and learn how to protect people from the creatures that stalk the night?"

"Absolutely."
