Chapter 12: Bigger Than The Whole Sky

Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

Santana hadn't believed the news when it finally reached her. He wasn't gone, that was impossible. There were so many things she'd left unsaid, so many things he left undone. Not to mention she'd only just recently brought him in to deal with that Brody character? He couldn't be gone.

But he was. That's what everyone told her when she was the last to receive the news. Yes, she lived in New York and so did Kurt and Rachel. In fact, they were friends. But she'd been with Dani when Burt and Carol had called. With both of them too overwhelmed with grief to share the news with anyone else, it went through the Glee grapevine. The only people who found out at nearly the same time as Rachel and Kurt were Puck and Mr. Schue. From there the news was shared. It was Quinn who told Santana. She'd left Dani with a million questions and headed back to the loft to help Rachel and Kurt get on a plane back to Lima. They flew into Ohio together, but they went back to Lima and back to McKinley broken and apart.

Brittany and Quinn only made it to the funeral. Both attending two of the most prestigious schools in the country, they couldn't take more time off. Brittany looked miserable, more so than everyone else. MIT was certain not where she belonged, and the short time Santana was able to speak with her was proof of that. Unfortunately, Santana was not much of a shoulder to lean on for either of her blonde best friends. Quinn had lost her first love and Brittany felt she'd never forgiven Finn for what he'd done to Santana. Neither held up well to the news, and both were furious they couldn't come back to pay their respects properly with the rest of the Glee club. Santana left them both clinging to each other at the airport before they boarded separate planes, to deal with their grief alone. They left Santana in a similar situation. The people she was closest with had their own grief, even when they'd returned to New York. So she spent her time away from the loft and with Dani who, although not as comforting as the arms she wished were around her, served as a distraction from her turmoil. It kept her from doing entirely irrational things like Puck, who most definitely called her crying while looking at the tree he tore out of the memorial garden. Apparently she was the only person he thought would understand-and he'd been right. Her and Puck were alike in one very specific way, and that was they grieved angrily. She just had managed to keep hers tempered. That was until they attempted to take down the memorial in the hallway. She'd gone Lima Heights on Sue, and she'd regretted it instantly. The anger was here. And it was going to nearly ruin everything she had to say. And there was only one person who could get through to her at that point, and she wasn't there. But, Brittnay must've sprinkled fairy dust on Kurt, because he was a pretty good stand in. However, more likely, was that Finn had imparted something into his brother and the jacket that Santana would get back at no cost. Blowing at Puck might not be the best way to get it back, but damned if she was going to go down without a fight. She would, however, apologize to Sue.

In time, Mr. Schue would return the jacket to her, just before she returned to New York. It was hers. He knew it. She needed it more than he did. Not to mention it'd be close to Rachel and Kurt if she had it. It only made sense. But the night he'd spent crying into it was enough.

She flew back to New York wrapped in the letterman, sat beside Kurt and Rachel. She'd meant what she'd said it Mr. Schue. She had no intention of returning to Lima ever again.

You were more than just a short time
