Chapter 13: Maroon

I see you everyday now

Working at the Spotlight Diner or not, Santana spent most of her waking hours with Dani when she returned to New York. Rachel was rehearsing for Funny Girl and Kurt was starting a band. She didn't have as many prospects, but she did have Dani. And Dani was great. She never asked probing questions about how she was, even if she cried. She'd listen or let Santana get it out with physical intimacy. That had always been Santana's way of dealing with her crap.

Of course, so was singing, so when Kurt reached out to her and Dani about joining his band, which was now probably the gayest group of people she'd ever seen, she couldn't say no. I mean, for one, bands performed, and performing meant fame, and that was still her dream. Her only remaining dream anyway, seeing as Brittany wasn't in the picture. And that was fine. She had Dani. Dani was wonderful and beautiful and great in bed. Plus, she totally agreed with Santana's no feelings policy. Yes, they were more than fuck buddies, but they didn't need to have depe talks about love like Brittany always insisted on. They could just be sapphic superstars together. Two parts of the up and coming group Pamela Lansbury. Which, even with the addition of Rachel, was still very very gay, seeing as Starchild AKA Elliot was possibly gayer than Kurt. That tipped the scales. And singing alongside her girlfriend and her best friends felt really good. It was like being back in Glee club but without the vengeful undertones or hidden message like an Aesop's Fable. It was singing how she loved to.

In New York, no shoes

While Rachel and Kurt dealt with their need to take life by the antler by maiming their bodies- well in Kurt's case anyway. Santana actually really liked Rachel's "Finn" tattoo. And, obviously, she wasn't bothered much by tattoos, I mean, look at Dani. Still, that wasn't her urge when taking a new "YOLO" approach to life. No, she was chasing the two things she always had: love and fame. The limelight of Pamela Lansbury wasn't enough, especially when she shared it with Elliot, who she adored, of course, but he was a star, just like his moniker eluded. The only person she knew with a greater grasp on fame than him was Rachel. Kurt thought he did, but he was performing with his fiance (much to her chagrin they were very engaged while she was filling her Brittany shaped hole with a box dye blonde) at the diner. That screamed desperation, something that was not becoming of THE Santana Lopez. But at least he had someone to depend on. Dani was dependable for a good time and a sweet guitar riff, but she wasn't going to help her secure even a whiff of fame. Blaine and Kurt had potential, and even Sam was getting help with his modeling career from Rachel while Santana continued to live off Yeast-a-stat funds and tips. And even her peace was being killed by a piano taking up half the room in the living room for the loft. It was seriously killing her vibe, especially when the gays started singing to guppy lips. Sure, if you asked her a year or two ago about solving problems with a song, she'd probably agree to it being a viable option. But not now. Still, she could refuse a good song, and she joined in eventually. It did nothing to satiate her hunger for fame, but singing more meant singing better. It also gave her the perfect chance to use her psychic Mexican third eye to sense chemistry between Sam and Rachel, which was a delectable piece of gossip to hold over the head of one Tina Cohen Chang and a great distraction from her own blonde haired problems. She needed something to occupy her time, and if Pamela Lansbury wasn't going to do it, gossip would. Besides, Dani loved gossip as much as she did, and she seriously wished she'd been a part of the Glee club's messiness. What better way to replicate it than letting it come alive again? Still, fame was out of reach. It was time to kick Pamela Lansbury into gear or she was going to take drastic measures.

Looked up at the sky and it was maroon

Kurt had said it was an emergency and acted like this was good news. Premiering at Callbacks was the OPPOSITE and she made that blatantly clear. Elliot and Dani backed her up. Worse yet, Kurt was back on his high horse about being a Madonna cover band. She'd joined in hopes this could launch her career, even if the band crumbled, but at this rate it was just dragging her down. Rachel didn't have to worry, and honestly neither did Elliot or Kurt seeing as they were both in college. But her and Dani, this was all they had besides dead end jobs at the diner. Not to mention she was far less into Dani's new hair color when compared to the blonde. Yup, she definitely had a type, and it was blonde, something Dani currently was not. Blue hair? I mean, she understood that it was trendy and all but come on. Santana wasn't going to break up with her for it, but she missed that blonde as fake as it was. At least nothing else had faltered in their relationship. In fact, Santana had actually been the one to open a feelings conversation. They'd been going steady, and it was crowded at the loft. She was seriously considering moving in with Dani, or at the very least spending the vast majority of her nights sleeping there, and the cogs were turning. She was sure Kurt and Rachel could handle the rent, and besides, Blaine would be coming to New York within the next few months, and she didn't want to live alone with Broadway Diva Rachel Berry and her two gay puppies.

Luckily, just as she was feeling like all her eggs were in a Dani shaped basket, much like she'd done with Brittany, Kurt booked them a proper gig at the Williamsburg Music Hall. This could do it. Maybe, just maybe, she wouldn't be grasping at straws in her quest for fame anymore. Maybe there was stock in Pamela Lansbury. It would've been nice if Dani had bothered to show up to the meeting though. Still, she loved her and understood. But, even with the new found semi-success of the band and the security she was feeling in her relationship, she needed something more solid when it came to fame. And Rachel was the key to that success.

It was maroon
