A/N #1: Really great to receive the feedback for the last chapter, so I'll get started on my thank yous for that! TORONTOSUN (I was very pleased to read that you liked how I ended the chapter with Skye and Mary since I wanted to do something different and was hoping readers would enjoy it!) and
Mb (I was really pleased you thought the first half of the chapter was an interesting update! I wasn't surprised you mentioned that a lot was going on and more information too, I thought you'd pick up on that, lol. And yeah, I thought that would be a nice twist with that woman, wanted to case to hold reader's attention. I'm glad too you liked the classic Castle and Beckett saying at the end of the first half, though I did want to add Skye of course. You're welcome for the first half of the chapter! Not surprised you pointed out the motive for the case, but yeah, it kind of makes it easier for these cases when there are simple reasons (stupid reasons IMO but simple, lol). And I wasn't surprised either you were glad that Skye closed the case and they'll be able to find more counterfeit parts too. Yeah, I figured with the troubles Skye had with the case she and Mary would want to get to their kids plus I wanted a little different ending to the chapter. Great to see you thought it was nicely done! You're welcome for the second half of the chapter!).
Thanks for the reviews, I loved reading them both and appreciate the time taken to write them out and send them my way!
A/N #2: The title of this chapter is a lyric from the song Dead Man's Party written by Danny Elfman, from the Oingo Boingo album the same name as the band.
Who Could Ask For More
"You really didn't have to pick us up you know," Skye told her dad when they had reached their car.
"Well, we didn't want you two to have to take a cab," Liam said, nodding to his husband when Pablo opened the door for him.
"And I could have driven," he told his stepdaughter.
"Not going to happen," Skye replied.
"Then you'll just drop us off," Liam told her.
"We don't mind, we know you want to get back home," Pablo said quickly since he knew the two in the front of the car would protest.
"Alright but you'll come to dinner with us," Skye said.
"Where are you going?" Liam asked.
"The Promenade," Mary answered since her wife was focusing on getting out of the parking structure.
"No surprise there, what about the Pier," Liam said.
Laughing once she had paid for their parking, Skye said, "I'm not surprised you suggested it. But it's a school night so we'll take them to that tomorrow." When the car fell silent for a while, she wasn't surprised but didn't comment on it until she was on Lincoln heading north. "I'm assuming you want to hear how everything went?"
"Before you do that," Liam said. "Are you done with your case?"
"I just need to wrap up tomorrow," Skye said. "But I'll be off for two weeks."
"It should be longer," Pablo commented.
"Thanks," Skye replied with a smile. "But I have to save for vacations."
"Then will you tell us?" Liam asked.
Skye nodded and then proceeded to relate everything that had happened with her investigation and the police's case, finishing when she pulled up to her dads' house.
"Worthless," Liam hissed. "I'd heard of the family, and I thought you were talking about the elder Mr. Landen."
"I'm not surprised, but no it was his son," Skye replied.
"Well… at least it'll stop now," Liam said. "No," he added in a rush when Skye and Mary were opening their doors. "We can head up on our own."
"Da-" Skye began.
"No," Liam replied firmly, waiting for his husband to come around the car though he hadn't wanted to make him do that. "We'll see you tonight, just let us know where."
"Why don't you come with us to pick up the girls?" Mary asked.
Waiting to respond once he was out of the car, Liam said, "We'll be there once you return and bring our car."
"Okay, we'll see you then," Mary said.
"And thank you for staying with the girls," Skye hurried to add.
"You're welcome," Liam said, squeezing her hand she'd reached out to him with. "And get some rest now lass."
"We will," Mary assured him. She and her wife said goodbye to the two men and once Skye was continuing to their house she said, "We're not are we," not surprised she was responding immediately.
"I'm not that tired," Skye replied with a smile. "I did sleep the entire flight."
"So did I," Mary said firmly. She looked at her watch and said, "Also we don't have much time."
"I always forget Thursdays are minimum days," Skye replied before she stopped and pressed the remote for the gate in front of their house. "So we've got a little more than…"
"Two hours," Mary answered in amusement. "And we'll have lunch as soon as we unpack."
"Sure," Skye said. "Though I hope there's food."
"I'm sure they left enough, we have to eat tomorrow too," Mary replied before her wife was going down their driveway. Once they were in the garage they got out and unloaded the car together, greeting the dogs who were waiting at the fencing that divided their backyard grass from the driveway.
"Hello everyone, we're back," Skye said laughingly as Fleur's French Bulldog tried to jump on her legs.
"And stay down here," Mary said, closing the gate behind them. "We'll be right back."
"They won't," Skye said.
"Some will," Mary replied before they made their way inside. Going up to their room she said, "I'm glad to have you back."
Smiling briefly at her wife, since she wasn't surprised she was looking at the bed, Skye said, "So am I." She then became serious and said, "You were okay until you joined me?"
"Like I always am," Mary said. She saw her wife was opening her mouth to speak before she said firmly, "I knew how it was going to be before you proposed."
"Just making sure," Skye said, going to their closet. She gasped when she was suddenly hugged from behind and smiled as her wife kissed the back of her shoulder. "I missed you," she said, turning around and wrapping her arms around her tightly. They kissed deeply at that point before they were slowly parting and she said, "You know… I'm not that hungry," she said before her wife was responding quickly.
"You're a liar," Mary said with a smile. She brushed her lips to her wife's and then said, "And I wish we could, but we should eat something before we have to get the girls."
"I knew you were going to say that," Skye replied before they were kissing gently. After they'd parted, they let go of one another and put their suitcases on the bed to begin unpacking. After they'd taken everything out and had done the same with their carry-ons she said, "You don't have anything else?"
"No, that was it," Mary said. "Sandwiches?" she asked her wife.
"Sounds good," Skye replied before she stopped her wife at the doorway to their room. "I was going to suggest the King's Head."
"I'm not surprised," Mary said. "I'm fine with it, but we need to ask the girls."
"We will," Skye said firmly before they were leaving their room and heading down the stairs. They made their lunch together, going as swiftly as they'd done with their luggage, and ate outside since the day was warm enough for it.
"What're you thinking of doing until we go?" Mary asked her wife.
Smiling, since she'd been expecting the question, Skye said, "The same as you."
"How do you know what I want?" Mary replied.
"Just a guess," Skye said. "But what if the girls want to play?"
"Then you want to swim?" Mary asked.
"No, we can go play," Skye answered. "To be honest playing at Kate and Rick's made me remember ours." She was startled when her wife began laughing and was about to ask her why she was doing that before she calmed down and spoke.
"I had a feeling you were thinking of your plane game," Mary said.
Rolling her eyes, smiling at the same time, Skye said, "It's a flight simulator if you please."
"Fine, but I wanted us to play pool first," Mary replied.
Taking in a deep breath of air and quickly setting back her glass, Skye said, "That's a risk grá."
"I don't care," Mary said. "We haven't been alone for that… I mean we had our room, but it wasn't ours."
"I know what you mean," Skye said with a sigh. She then reached for her wife's hand and said, "Then we'll play first-" becoming startled when her wife interrupted her suddenly.
"And for each shot we sink we get a kiss," Mary said. When her wife narrowed her eyes at her she smirked since she was well aware there was nothing behind the investigator's expression. "Tell me that isn't a good idea," she teased her.
Pursing her lips for a moment, Skye then smiled and said, "It is, now let's go or we'll never have time for it."
Smiling at her wife's tone of voice, since there was no mistaking her eagerness, Mary followed her inside feeling the same as well.
"You can't see it can you?" Mary asked.
"It's on your shoulder," Skye said. She frowned and said, "I shouldn't-"
"Yes, you should have," Mary interrupted her, speaking firmly. "I didn't want you to mark me on my neck." Shaking her head, she then said, "I would have never been able to keep everyone from seeing that." She felt her wife squeezing her hand and smiled and her saying, "We'll check on it later."
"Yes, we will," Skye said before she looked back ahead of them and saw they'd reached their three youngest's school. "Right on time," she said, noticing the first of the kids starting to leave.
"There they are," Mary said, spotting the three.
"Mummy! Mommy!" the girls cried, seeing their mothers when they were going down the steps from the entrance to the school.
"Don't run, you'll trip," Skye teased them. She wasn't surprised when all three went to her first and looked apologetically at Mary while they were exclaiming to her.
"We missed you so much!" "Are you staying home now?" "Please say we can go swimming," Fleur, Ivy and Iris said at nearly the same time.
"I missed you, yes we're not going anywhere, and you have to ask your mom about that," Skye said, doing her best not to start laughing when the girls were racing to Mary and speaking to her as they had to herself.
"We missed you," Fleur said. "You're not going to go away again like that are you?"
"No," Mary said with a smile, assuring the twins when they were asking the same. She hugged them to her for a little longer and then said, "But you have to remember your mummy might need to go for an investigation again."
"Likely not for a while," Skye said, looking down the street.
"Are they there?" Mary asked.
"I think so," Skye said, since she could see two girls in school uniforms crossing the street. "Did your sisters both wear their trousers today?" she asked the three.
"They did," Ivy said with a nod.
"I think they see us," Mary told her wife.
"Let's hope they don't run," Skye commented before they were watching the two approaching.
"Mum, Mom!" Marie and Kathleen called out at the same time once they were close, jogging the last bit to Skye.
Laughing when they nearly threw themselves at her Skye said, "I missed you two, thank you for helping your grandfathers." She looked at the youngest and said, "And you three as well."
"Are you staying here?" Kathleen asked hopefully.
"Until December," Skye said simply.
"She means Christmas," Iris said eagerly.
"I do, we're still going for the holidays," Skye replied. "Do you lot have homework?"
"Yeah," the girls all said at the same time.
"Then we better get back home," Mary said.
"Wait, are we doing something at home?" Marie asked, having watched her mothers and seeing the glance they had shared.
"We'll discuss it once we're there," Skye said firmly before they were starting to walk back to the house.
"How much homework do you have?" Mary asked them when they were halfway there.
"Not all at once!" Skye said laughingly since they'd started at the same time. While the girls were laughing, she dimly heard her phone beginning to ring and she hurried to answer it, making the others stop walking.
Watching her speaking to whoever was on the other end, Mary wasn't surprised when her wife stepped away slightly from them until she was finished. "Something for work?" she asked, hoping that wasn't the case.
"No," Skye said. "But we still need to get home." She wasn't surprised when their daughters were complaining in reaction, but they ushered them to continue before they were walking again. "Would you mind if they didn't go to school tomorrow?" she asked her wife in Irish.
"It would depend on the reason," Mary said. "If it has to do with a mouse…"
"It does," Skye said, smiling at her wife's words.
"Then I'll call the school when we get back home," Mary said. "But what about the other two?"
"They'll come with us," Skye said firmly. They were nearly at their house, and she smiled seeing her father and stepfather arriving at that moment, the girls exclaiming in pleasure at the sight. After they were inside the kitchen, she watched her wife go towards the living room before she spoke with her parents.
"Sounds fantastic," Liam said, speaking in Irish as his daughter had.
"Are you sure?" Skye asked. When her dad gave her a look she laughed and then said, "Alright, let me check on the girls before I go to see if Mary finished." Leaving them in the laundry room, though she wasn't surprised they were shortly after following, she went to the kitchen table where all five girls were working together. "Almost done?" she asked.
"I am," Ivy said. "I just have to finish this chapter."
"Good, try and finish as soon as you can," Skye urged them before she was heading to the living where Mary was hanging up. "Any luck?" she asked.
"As long as they have their homework on Monday then we're set," the doctor replied. When her wife merely nodded Mary asked, "Are you okay?"
"We've been talking about tonight," Skye said. "I just hope you-" she started to say before her wife was interrupting her by kissing her deeply. It took her a moment to respond, but once she was, she was doing so fervently while they held onto one another. Tilting her head to the side she extended that kiss for longer until they were parting and nearly gasping for air. "So it'll need to be tomorrow," she said.
"Definitely, we'll recover after tonight," Mary replied before they shared a brief kiss. At some giggling behind Skye, she and her wife turned to find their second youngest was standing in the dining room, peering around them from the divider before she spoke a little shyly.
"We're finished with our homework," Ivy said. "Will you tell us what we're going to do?"
"Did your sisters ask you to bring us?" Skye asked with a smile after she and Mary had let go of one another.
"We all want to know," Ivy said, rushing to them. She took their hands before they were walking back to everyone else, she wanted to ask them what they were going to do but knew they wouldn't tell her. "Now?" she asked hopefully once they'd stopped.
"Yes," Skye said, smiling since her wife had looked at her. "We're going out."
"To where?" Marie asked.
"There's a certain Halloween party we've been discussing going to," Mary said.
"Disneyland!" the five kids all managed to say in joy.
"Yes, so go get your outfits ready because you get to wear them," Skye replied. "We're leaving as soon as you're ready."
"And don't run," Mary called when they'd started to.
"We can't go into the parks until three so we can take our time," Skye added before she watched them head up.
"Outfits?" Pablo asked the women.
"Marie's girlfriend had one custom made last year for the Halloween event," Skye said. "Oh no, I forgot we were going to ask Florrie to join us," she added before she turned to her wife when she spoke with a smile.
"Why do you think I took so long? And her mother said it's fine though she wasn't sure about her missing school," Mary said.
"You called for her?" Skye asked. At her wife's nod she said, "Okay, then we'll be ready once she's here."
"What fabric did you use for the girls?" Liam asked.
"You'll see right now," Skye replied since they were hurrying down the stairs. "Easy, we'll leave soon."
"Why not right now?" Iris asked eagerly, wearing a 1950s design of dress. Her fabric was white with Mickey Mouse jack-o-lanterns on it, and she said, "Is it pretty?"
"Very, where's your ribbon?" Mary asked.
"Here," Iris replied.
"Come here," Mary told her, taking the wide orange ribbon. She tied it around the girl's hair and said, "Is everyone comfortable?"
"Yeah, you and Mum aren't going to wear your costumes?" Marie asked teasingly. She was wearing a tunic dress and leggings, her tunic made from black fabric that had a Coco design on it with skulls and flowers.
"No," Skye said firmly. "We told you we'd wear them on Halloween."
"Let's go?" Kathleen asked slowly. She was in a tunic dress that had the Haunted Mansion ghosts on it over a medium grey background.
"Not yet?" Fleur asked with a frown when the adults were shaking their heads. "But why?"
"Because," Skye said, making her turn around so she could check the red sash on Fleur's dress. Like her youngest sister's it had a wide skirt and short sleeves, though her fabric was a grey background with Tsum Disney characters that were Halloween themed. "And everyone likes their fabric?"
"Isn't it late Mummy?" Ivy asked. "To change our minds?"
"A bit," Skye said, laughing when the girl little girl squeezed her hand. "And yes, yours looks great."
Ivy blushed but was pleased since she had the Haunted Mansion wallpaper with a purple background as a tunic dress. She wore purple leggings under that and said, "Do I need to wear these after?" holding out her leg.
"It'll go with blue tops," Skye said, smiling when the alert for the front gate intercom sounded. "So don't worry." She and Mary left then to open it for Florrie and her mother so they could finally make their way to that night's event at the resort.
"What're we going to do first?" Florrie asked, smiling at her girlfriend when Marie nudged her arm lightly with her own.
"We have some time until dinner," Skye said, holding the map of the park though it was just to check what had to deal with their Halloween party. "And no one wants to see the shows?" she asked.
"No," the six girls said at the same time. They laughed together before Kathleen said, "We don't have to, right?"
"No, it's part of the ticket but believe me, I think we all want to go on the rides too," Mary said.
"And the desserts?" Fleur asked hopefully.
"We're going to try those too," Skye said before she looked at her father and stepfather.
"We're following you," Liam replied, his husband nodding as they were walking under the bridge for the railroad.
"First let's have a picture in front of the pumpkin here and send it to our friends," Skye said, spotting the giant Mickey pumpkin display. The mouse and Minnie were there with guests, and she got them into line, relieved it went relatively fast before the cast member was taking a picture of them, the next person in line with her family taking one using Skye's phone. "Thank you so much," she said to the woman when they were moving out of the way of the next family. "Need me to take one?"
"Really quickly," the woman replied.
Motioning to her wife, Skye wasn't surprised when they were going across the street to wait for her, and she took a rapid shot of the family before handing back the phone. "Now we can go… Florrie," she said, speaking absently at first since she was on her phone, texting the photo to her co-workers and Beckett.
"What?" the girl asked, obviously startled.
Smiling at how fast she'd spoken, Skye said, "Sorry. I want to make sure you won't mind how we go around the park."
"I don't," Florrie said swiftly and with a smile since it was her second time at the park with them.
"Good, you lot know the drill," Skye told them, laughing with her wife when the girls were protesting.
"I don't think we're going to have to go to the Tiki Room," Pablo said when the girls had calmed down, Ivy speaking in surprise.
"So we can go on Indiana Jones first?" the little girl said.
"We were thinking of starting as usual with the Jungle Cruise," Mary commented. When their daughters were begging them to skip that time, she smiled at her wife and said, "I think we've reached that point grá."
"Where they lead us?" Skye asked. At her wife's nod she said, "I think you're right." She turned to the girls and told them, "We're following you guys but remember you're staying with us,"
"We know," the five McDouglas girls said at the same time before they were walking to the Indiana Jones ride. After they had gone on it, going through the exit, they were leading the adults to Pirates of the Caribbean with Florrie's help and were using their pass to go around the front.
"I'm wondering if Da's alright," Skye said after they'd gone down the two drops and were beginning to go past the scenes.
"I think they wanted to walk around," Mary assured her wife. "They do love going around the land."
"True," Skye said before she glanced at her wife when she laid her head on her shoulder. She wrapped her arm around Mary and murmured in Japanese, "I'm glad they still wanted to go on this."
"We're not kissing," the doctor commented.
"Well… I could have hoped," Skye replied, smiling when her wife squeezed her thigh. Watching the burning town they were getting to, she then said, "What if they put us together on the next?"
"They will," Mary said easily. She raised her head and told her wife, "Which makes me think you don't want to go with me," smiling when the investigator was racing to respond.
"Oh, trust me I do," Skye said. "Though we are here with the girls."
"We'll go on other rides," Mary assured her, wrapping her arm around her waist before Skye was doing the same to her. They held one another through the rest of the ride until they were getting off their bateaux and picking up her in-laws.
"Sounds like you had a lot of fun," Pablo told them since the girls had told him and Liam about the ride.
"We did," Marie said. "We know how we're going to go on this one," she then told all the adults. "Me, Florrie and Kath on one buggy. Ivy and Iris want to go with Grandda, and Fleur will go with you," she said, directing the last to Pablo.
"I look forward to it," he said with a nod. Pablo smiled before he was squeezing the little girl's shoulder.
"Does that meet with your expectations?" Liam asked his daughter and daughter in law.
"It does," Skye said firmly. "Are we heading to Thunder Mountain after?" Seeing their daughters nodding, she shared a smile with her wife and said, "We'll discuss the seating on that one. But for now, we're here," since they'd reached the ride. Using their passes again they were soon splitting up on their dune buggies and she said, "Should we have had a better chaperone?" since they were a few away from their oldest and her girlfriend.
"Don't let Kath hear you say that," Mary said with a smile. They headed up the staircase and as they passed the hallway with the floating candle she turned back to her wife when she felt her arm wrapping around her firmly. "Skye," she said firmly, not surprised when her wife was swiftly responding.
"You're going to make me stop?" Skye asked, her eyebrow slightly raised. When her wife rolled her eyes she smiled and leaned into her, kissing her lightly before they were looking at the different scenes of the special overlay for the ride.
"You know Mum and Mom would want me sitting in the middle," Kathleen was saying to her twin.
"Remind me of that when you have a boyfriend," Marie replied.
"Maybe you should have sat in the middle," Florrie told her girlfriend.
Shaking her head, Marie reassured her saying, "We're only joking, we're fine sitting like this."
"We are, and we're missing the ride," Kathleen added, not surprised her sister was looking at her pointedly. She soon noticed her sister and Florrie were holding hands and she wanted to tease them but decided not to at the smiles on their faces. She watched the ride the rest of the way until they were at the exit, and they waited for the rest of their family until they were going up the ramp.
"We're not going on Splash Mountain?" Iris asked her mothers jokingly.
"No," Mary said firmly. "But if you want to go watch it, we could."
When the girls were at once saying no, Skye said, "I'm not surprised."
"Do we need to have dinner?" Marie asked, watching her mother checking the time.
"Soon but I think we can save it for after Thunder Mountain," Skye said before they were heading to the ride.
"Mummy?" Ivy asked, hurrying to her and taking her hand. "What're we having for dinner?"
"I think you already know," Skye said, smiling at her.
"Could I get the meal?" Ivy asked.
"Do you really want rice?" Skye said, responding with her own question. She wasn't surprised when her daughter frowned and said, "Remember that we're going to have different desserts."
"Okay, then can I get the beef one?" Ivy said.
"If your sisters want that too," Skye told her firmly. She wasn't surprised when her second youngest nodded and let go of her hand to catch up with her twin and Fleur.
After the family had gone on the ride, they made their way back to Adventureland and the stall for Bengal Barbeque. While their mothers were ordering their food, Liam and Pablo took the girls over to the Tropical Hideaway and got pineapple juice for them all before they sat at tables to wait for the women.
"Shouldn't we head back to help them?" Florrie asked.
"I'm going," Pablo said reassuringly. "I wanted to make sure you were all set first." After squeezing his husband's shoulder in passing he walked back to the other restaurant and said, "You're so lucky they're letting us sit there."
"Of course we are," Mary said. "And good timing," she added when their number was called. They moved to get everything they needed before they carefully made their way to where their family was, the girls talking and laughing before they cheered seeing them and her wife was responding.
"Hold on, you're going to upset your juice," Skye said in obvious amusement. "And don't eat too fast."
"When are we going to California Adventure?" Marie asked.
"Once we finish with our dessert," Mary answered.
"After we finish in the park," Liam said.
"Yes, though you know you don't need to go on them all," Skye said. "Either of you," she said, adding the last swiftly to Pablo.
"We'll let you know if we don't want to," Liam said before they started to eat after they'd split everything between them.
Listening to their daughters and Florrie discussing the rides they had left in the park, Mary said, "Are we going to have the chance to go on everything?"
"Well, there's only two in Galaxy's Edge so that will help," Skye said. "Though we'll need to go on some slower rides of course."
"Of course," Mary replied. "Are you going to tell them that?"
"Why should I have to?" Skye answered jokingly. "They should be aware already."
Shaking her head as she smiled, Mary said, "You're terrible."
"No, I'm not," Skye replied easily. "But seriously, they know."
Mary smiled and squeezed her wife's hand before they were soon finishing and after they had she stood to help clear their table. "Did you eat everything you took?" she asked the girls.
"We did," Marie said first, her sisters and Florrie agreeing with her. "But what about now? We don't have to go on Small World, do we?"
"No," Skye said laughingly. "What would you like to go on?"
"Peter Pan," the six were saying at the same time.
"Okay, we'll go straight to it," Skye told them. "And I hope you discussed how you'll be sitting once we're there."
"We did," Marie and Kathleen said at the same time before they were leaving the restaurant.
Going through Fantasyland, since she and Skye wanted to wait longer than just one ride to head back to the faster ones, Mary told her wife when they'd gone on everything the girls wanted, "I think we've spent enough time."
"We have," Skye said, checking the time and nodding. She then said to the girls, "Did you want to go on Rodger Rabbit?"
"Are we coming back here?" Ivy asked.
"I think so," Skye said. "Actually, I was thinking of ending in this park since we should be going through California Adventure quickly."
"Then we want to go later," Marie said after she, her sisters and her girlfriend had shared looks. "Now we want to go on the Matterhorn."
"Okay, I think you know we will be," Liam said with a smile.
"We'll get you when we're finished," Skye said before they made their way to the ride. She watched her father and stepfather leaving them to go to the benches under the monorail and by the water. "I envy them," she said in Japanese to her wife while they were waiting to be allowed on the ride.
"I'm not surprised, but we'll worry about that tomorrow," Mary replied before their second oldest was asking them about the seating.
"Are we still sitting apart?" Kathleen asked.
"We are," Skye said. "And no, we're not budging from that. Just enjoy the ride." She smiled when the others were nodding in agreement, and she squeezed at her wife's hand before they were walking through the gate to move to the cars.
