Bella was getting past feeling nauseous all the time. The medicine that Carlisle gave her was working. Today she was nervous. It was the day for the ultrasound. A few weeks had past and news broke about Bella and Oliver dating. They were photographed together frequently, and she made all the headlines. That's why she was feeling more and more nervous about the baby. The baby inside her was Edward's. He had raped her and had gotten her pregnant once more. The judge didn't immediately sign off on the divorce. The protection order was still in place, but Edward was contesting it and it was his right to contest a divorce and the judge agreed to bringing it to family court, especially since there was a child involved. So, now she was set to be in court in three weeks.
"Hey, you okay?" Oliver asked as they got out of the car and stood outside Carlisle's clinic.
Bella blew out a breath. "I don't know. Just nerves." She said and tried a smile.
Oliver dipped in and kissed her lightly and ran a hand down her arm. "Everything is going to be okay." He reassured her and then grabbed her hand in his, lacing his fingers with hers. They walked into the clinic together and before long Bella was laying on her back on the exam table. The ultrasound technician was nice, Heather Courtney, she was a new ultrasound technician. She was perky and blonde, and her perkiness is what made Bella feel even more nervous.
Oliver squeezed her hand again as Heather inserted the probe and Bella felt the discomfort. "It's okay." He reassured her as Heather moved the probe around. Oliver kissed the back of Bella's hand and smiled as he watched the screen.
After a few moments, Heather smiled and gestured to the screen. "There it is. See that blinking, that's the heart." She said, her tone light and airy. She hit a few keys and then a whoosh whoosh sound filled the air of the steady heartbeat of the baby.
Bella looked at the screen, at the small little blip on the screen. "So little."
"Mhm, likely seven weeks. Everything looks healthy, good placement, strong heartbeat." Heather commented with a nod. "Congrats you two." She said and printed the images so Bella and Oliver had a keepsake of the baby. She removed the probe. "Go ahead and get dressed, Dr. Cullen will be in momentarily." She said and left the room to Oliver and Bella.
Oliver helped Bella into a sitting position and grabbed her clothes so Bella could get dressed. He pulled the curtain closed for her to give her privacy. "How are you feeling?" He asked as he waited for her to get dressed.
"Um. I don't know." Bella said as she quickly pulled her clothes on and then pushed the curtain back. Oliver turned and looked down at her. "Thank you."
Oliver leaned in and kissed her softly, his hand brushing over her belly gently. "Seven weeks is still early. We have time to discuss about-"
"I'm not marrying you Ollie." Bella breathed out. "I can't… I can't do that to you. This whole thing is crazy. Why did I agree to this." She was starting to panic.
Oliver grabbed both of her hands in his and squeezed them. "Hey, calm down. It's okay. I want to do this."
Bella felt her bottom lip quiver. "Oliver…"She murmured.
"We can talk about it later. We don't have to make decisions right now." Oliver said and then kissed her forehead. "Let me take care of you Bella." He murmured, his lips still brushing her forehead.
Bella sighed and leaned into Oliver, his arms coming around her now. She was crazy, and this was crazy. Where did all of these feelings even come from? She couldn't be in love with Oliver Queen. Not this fast.
There was a brief knock on the door and Carlisle came in. Carlisle smiled a little. "Okay, so everything looks healthy. I sent off your blood for the gender testing like you requested and you're not anemic this time. So, all good things."
Bella looked at Carlisle, blowing out a breath. "Thank you."
"Of course." Carlisle said and looked to Oliver and then back to Bella. "Seven weeks." He said with a nod. "This is rather… fast for the two of you."
"Carlisle." Bella started.
"It's still new, yes, but I care about Bella very much. We grew up together and have been close friends." Oliver explained.
Carlisle nodded, taking the clipboard and looking at it, before crossing his arms and looking at the two of them. "When did it happen Bella?" He asked.
Bella frowned. "What?"
"Oliver was out of town at the time of conception. I looked into Mr. Queen." Carlisle said before Bella or Oliver could say something.
"Why would you do that?" Bella asked, shocked.
"I wanted to know Mr. Queen better. He's been around Renesme." Carlisle said.
Oliver cleared his throat. "Mr. Cullen, I would never hurt your granddaughter or Bella."
"I know." Carlisle said and looked at Bella. "You go to court in 3 weeks. Edward will not get a chance to get close to Ren. I am trying my hardest to do that. But it is clear that he's been in Starling City longer than I knew and I want the truth."
Bella teared up. "Dad." She croaked out.
Carlisle sighed and reached for Bella and she went to him his arms going around her. "Why didn't you tell me?" he whispered.
"I'm scared." Bella sniffed.
Carlisle's blue eyes met Oliver's. "I know but you have a fine young man by your side. He'll keep you from falling too deep."
"Mr. Cullen, my intention is to step up. Be the father for the baby. I- "
"I understand. That is honorable of you Mr. Queen. I trust Bella is in good hands with you. As is Renesme. My son, is a cruel man and dangerous. She is safest with you and your… security that follows you everywhere. This will be an ugly trial if there is one. But I am trying my best to keep it out of the papers and without hurting Ren." Carlisle said and kissed the top of Bella's head like a father would his daughter. "Call your father Bella." He said gently as he pulled back to look at her.
Bella shook her head. "Carlisle… he's sick. I can't."
"Cancer does not mean he gets left out of the loop." Carlisle said and brushed her hair back out of her face. "Call him."
Bella swallowed and then nodded, even though she wouldn't. Her father was battling cancer and the stress of everything would only make things worse. So she agreed for right now. "Um. I have to get to the office. Next check up will be in four weeks right?"
Carlisle nodded. "I'll have the gender results tomorrow." He said. "Oliver."
"I'll take care of her Doctor Cullen." Oliver reassured him and then put a hand on Bella's arm. "Come on. Diggle will drive us." He said and then nodded to Carlisle once more before leaving with Bella.
The ride to CNRI was quiet. Bella wasn't sure what to say, but once they pulled up, Oliver got out of the car and reached for her hand. She put hers in his delicately, and he helped her out of the car and they walked into CNRI together. They took the elevator up in silence and Oliver was starting to worry about her keeping all her thoughts to herself. He didn't want to push her away but he also wanted her to know that she could tell him anything. The elevator stopped and they got off, brushing past a couple other lawyers at the firm before walking towards her desk. She set her briefcase down and looked at Oliver. "I am okay." She said out loud.
Oliver just nodded and his hand went to her face, cupping it gently. "It's okay if you're not." He murmured and then kissed her sweetly. "I've got a lot to do at the club today, so I won't make lunch. But, good luck in court and I'll be at your house later this evening." He reminded her.
Bella smiled a little. "Okay. Be careful." She said, unsure why she would tell him that, but he smiled at her, kissed her one last time before leaving her at her desk to prepare for the day.
Oliver walked into Verdant, unbuttoning his suit jacket a little and nodded to Tommy. "Club is ready for opening tonight?"
"It is." Tommy said as he jogged down the stairs that went up to the office. "Are you heading out for hood business?"
"I have a guy I have to find. Question him about the Vertigo." Oliver said and went to the storeroom door and punched in a code and Tommy followed him down into the lair. Felicity was sitting at a computer monitor typing something, and glanced up at Oliver and Tommy when they walked in. "Got some coordinates?"
"Picked up some talk on the police scanner, they're looking into a guy called Hanson. Hanson has an address in the Glades. Sending to your phone now." Felicity said and the phone that Oliver used as the hood vibrated. He pulled it from his pocket and looked at it.
"Thanks Felicity." Oliver said and grabbed his duffle bag that had his gear in it.
Tommy frowned. "You're going in alone again?"
"Tommy, I'll be okay. Just make sure the club is open tonight. I have to make sure Bella makes it home okay later."
Tommy was uneasy about that situation too. "Don't you think that it's a bit dangerous… dating Bella while being the vigilante?"
Oliver sighed and looked at his friend. This was the question that Tommy had on his mind for the last few weeks. "Tommy. I care about Bella."
"I get that, but… if she finds out about you being the Hood, or worse, what if someone finds out and they use her against you." Tommy reasoned.
"If I hide in the shadows in both my night life and my personal life, then I'm not living. I promised Shadow I wouldn't… that if I got off that Island, that I would be stronger… wiser and I am doing that." Oliver said. "I have to go." He said and left Tommy there with Felicity.
Shadow was a girl on the island that he met. She trained him to be the archer he is. She was also someone he deeply cared about and regretted her death. Her death would haunt him forever, but he made a promise to her that he would be strong and strong he will be.
Hanson was a brute man, short and stocky, but he was rough around the edges. He stood in his living room, counting the money from the Vertigo sales of the day. He paused and lit a cigarette and then turned to something crashing through his front window. He scrambled for his gun and fired at what he saw was the vigilante now. He fired again, but the Hood was fast. He felt the pain of the arrow lodging in his good shoulder. "What do you want!"
"Where are you getting the Vertigo!" Oliver growled out, aiming his bow in Hanson's face. Hanson shuddered before him.
"I don't know who is supplying it! I get it from a locker at the Starling train station!" Hanson immediately shouted out.
Oliver growled and heard the sirens from the Starling Police and no doubt Larry Lance was part of that. He left Hanson there in his house and left out the back way and fired his arrow up at one of the larger buildings and used the grapple to pull himself up to the top of the roof. Once there, he felt the pain in his side from the bullet graze that Hanson had clipped him. He was getting sloppy and needed to pay more attention. But for now he needed to get back to Verdant to get his side checked out. His phone rang and he pulled it out of his pocket of his leather pants.
"Hello."
"The police are at Verdant with a search warrant." Tommy said.
"God damnit." Oliver cursed. "What are they looking for?"
"Financial records. Oliver you need to get here." Tommy said and then hung up.
Oliver growled a little bit and then fired his arrow again, swinging from the rope.
[Verdant]
Oliver managed to patch his side and it was deeper than what he anticipated, but he changed and made it to the club and faced off with Larry Lance. "What can I do for you detective?"
"Good, you're here. I can properly serve this warrant." Larry said and shoved the warrant at Oliver.
Oliver looked over the warrant. "Alright Detective, you can search the club but I assure you you're not going to find anything. You're on a wild goose chase."
Larry narrowed his eyes as he stared Oliver down. "Tell me Oliver, why is it we discovered that the building inspector was paid off to not inspect the club?"
Tommy cleared his throat. "That is my fault. We shouldn't even be open." He said with an easy smile. "IT was to speed up the process for opening night. I am the manager of this club and I hold responsibility for any misdeeds that seem to have been brought to light."
Oliver eyed Tommy, surprised to hear that the inspector was paid off. He hadn't paid that much attention and had left most of the club's organization to Tommy since he started this charade to hide his lair below.
Larry made a hmph noise and then signaled to the other officers to start searching the club from top to bottom. When it came to the storeroom door, Oliver was nervous about it, but he complied. He would have to explain everything to Larry in some way, but when they walked down they saw nothing but boxes of liquor and random objects just stored. Larry opened one of the boxes.
"You're welcome to open all the boxes detective." Tommy said, one of his hands in his pockets as he stood in a relaxed stance.
Larry growled and shoved the bottle back into the box and then pushed past Oliver and Tommy and left with the other officers.
Once they were alone, Oliver blew out a breath. "How did you get all of this down here so fast?"
"Laurel mentioned her frustration with her dad and him applying for a warrant. I found out shortly after you left earlier. Diggle and Felicity helped. Oliver, Lance isn't gonna give. He is gunning for you as part of his personal vendetta against you for what happened to Sarah."
Oliver knew that Larry Lance would never give up on him and he knew that Larry suspected that he was the one under the hood, but Oliver had a plan for that. "Yeah," he said and then blew out another breath and winced, his hand going to his side.
Tommy frowned. "What's wrong?"
"I got clipped tonight. It's deeper than I anticipated." Oliver said and shrugged off his suit jacket and the blood staining his shirt underneath was alarming to Tommy.
"Dear god Oliver, you need a hospital."
"Nope. Gunshot Tommy, I can't go in." Oliver said and then unbuttoned his shirt and the bandage that he had put over it had been soaked through. "I need stitches. Where did you put the med kit?" He asked right when Diggle and Felicity were coming down the stairs.
Diggle made it over to Oliver first and surveyed the wound. "Tommy get the med kit." He said and Tommy rushed to go get the med kit from upstairs in the office. "This was a close call Oliver."
"I know." Oliver said. "On both fronts. I was sure the sirens at Hanson's was going to be Lance, but I guess he was too focused on me and his personal vendetta to care about scum like Hanson." He said and Felicity drug a chair over and forced Oliver to sit down.
Tommy returned with the med kit and Diggle went to work on putting a few stitches in to help close the wound so it would stop bleeding.
Bella pushed her fingers into her eyes as she leaned back in her chair. She had been working on the Veritgo case for Mr. Hanson since he was processed earlier. He had an arrow in his shoulder and his apprehension was because of the hood. She didn't want to represent the scumbag, but she didn't get a choice and was assigned this case. But that meant she had to get all the information together. She glanced at her watch and realized that she had worked through dinner and that wasn't good. She opened the top left drawer on her desk and pulled her phone out and saw messages from Jasper and from Esme letting them know that Ren was in bed and was sleeping and reminding her to eat. There were no messages from Oliver and she figured he had gotten tied up with the club stuff.
She looked up at Tommy when he walked in and she frowned. "Tommy? Laurel isn't here. She left a while ago."
"I know. She's having dinner with her family." Tommy said. "Oliver said you would likely still be working. I came by to see you home. He's still at the club."
"Oh, right. Um." She stood and put a hand to her stomach when she felt the flutters, but she knew it wasn't the baby, it was just thinking about Oliver that gave her flutters like this often.
Tommy frowned. "Are you okay?" He saw the way she placed a hand over her belly and it concerned him. She had been sick off and on and he was preparing to grab a trashcan for her or anything.
"I'm okay. I skipped dinner." Bella said and put files in her brief case and grabbed her phone and keys for the townhouse. "Um, can we stop and grab something?"
"Of course." Tommy said and then walked with her to the elevator. He leaned over and hit the button, his hand on her back as he leaned over. He glanced at his watch when it vibrated and read the message from Laurel.
[Laurel] My dad searched the club! Is Ollie okay?
Tommy sighed and then stepped onto the elevator with Bella and decided not to respond to Laurel just yet.
There was the smallest hint of snow in the air as Tommy and Bella walked out of CNRI. It made her shiver a little, but it was only brief before Tommy guided her to his towncar and opened the door for her. She ducked down inside Tommy behind her.
"One thing I hate about winter." Bella muttered.
Tommy smiled. "The snow that is coming? It'll probably start giving us a hard time soon. You definitely shouldn't be walking to work in the mornings. Does Oliver send a car for you?"
"Oh, well, usually he stays the night and Diggle drives us." Bella commented.
"You and Oliver… it's getting pretty serious?"
Bella smiled a little. "I suppose it is. I know it seems crazy."
"No, not at all. Just. You know, be careful with Oliver. I have no room to talk because we're cut from the same cloth, but being with Laurel has… tamed me. Perhaps you have done the same to Oliver." Tommy said with a smile.
Bella thought about what Tommy said. Both him and Laurel had showed concern for her, she appreciated the worry, and she would be careful. She needed to be now more than ever. "Thanks Tommy."
[1 weeks later]
Bella had been busy all week with court and finding time to be with Oliver was increasingly harder and harder. They both had busy lives and she was thinking about the baby. She just… felt off about the whole thing and she didn't know why, or how to even begin to explain it. In two weeks, she would have to face Edward again in court and she wasn't looking forward to that. She was trying her best to protect Renesme from all of this, but it was exhausting. She was eleven now, her party had made her so happy and of course Oliver showered her with the attention that Ren deserved. The gender results that Carlisle had, said that she was having a boy, and Bella didn't know what she would do raising a boy since she only had experience raising a girl. She was still nervous about the baby.
Right now she was at the Queen mansion for a dinner party that Moira Queen-Steele was putting on. Oliver had invited her and she agreed to it. Ren was staying the night at Carlisle and Esme's so she could spend some time out at the dinner party. She had been hesitant about it because she didn't have a dress, but Oliver took care of that. The sapphire blue cocktail dress that he had picked out fit her snug. She had a slight bump because of the baby. She was eight weeks pregnant and because of her tiny frame, she was showing already even if it was just barely. The tightness of the cocktail dress made it seem worse, but Bella hadn't noticed the bump, not like Moira did.
"My dear, it is always a pleasure to have you in our home." Moire said and kissed Bella's cheek.
Moira was about three inches taller than Bella, and her blond hair was brushed neatly and it fell to her shoulders. Her blue eyes were like a denim color and her ears sparkled with fine jewerly that matched the champagne color of her dress.
Oliver was talking to Walter Steele, Moria's second husband and the current CEO of Queen Consolidated. He was tall, his mocha skin seemed to be perfect, carrying on a youth that disguised his age. His suit was a deep navy and he wore a white shirt under it. He glanced over at Bella and smiled at her but turned his attention back to Walter and whatever it was he was talking about.
There were other guests there and Bella recognized some of them as being politicians of some sort, in addition to other philanthropists. The high society of Starling City were gathered in one place.
Bella smiled at Moira though, pushing away her nerves. "Thank you for having me. I know that I don't exactly fit in to the crowd here, but I appreciate Oliver bringing me along."
"My dear, Oliver fancies you and I am happy for the two of you. Truly." Moira said. "Oliver has been smiling more and I admit I have seen more of my son since he's been back home from that island, and that is because of you my dear."
Bella blushed a little and then was interupted by Oliver joining him. He had escaped his conversation with Walter to come to her side. His hand went around her waist as he turned and looked at his mother.
"Mom, I am going to steal her away for a moment." Oliver said and steered Bella away. They were alone now in a study. He turned and faced her, reaching for her and pulling her close to him, his mouth covering hers. "I have missed you so much." Oliver murmured against her lips.
Bella smiled, kissing him back. "We've been busy all week. You haven't been to the townhouse at all."
Oliver knew that he had been missing in action all week. He was running down leads on Vertigo and it had been hard to separate the Hood from his personal life as of late, and he was starting to think that Tommy was right with how dangerous this was and he would never dream of Bella getting hurt. Not because of him. But he was falling for her, hard and fast, and he couldn't just leave her hanging out to dry especially now. "I know. I'm sorry. I am failing at this boyfriend thing aren't I?"
"No," Bella said with a smile and reached her arms up, circling his neck as she leaned against him. "I have been busy too. I have to be in court in the morning. My client has his hearing."
"The vertigo guy?" Oliver asked.
"Yeah." Bella said and tipped up and kissed him. "I know he's scum, but I have to do my job. The hood put an arrow in him, so at least there's that."
"You agree with the vigilante putting arrows in people?"
Bella raised a brow. "I am a lawyer, so I could never admit it around other lawyers… but… yes. I agree with his methods. The Glades are better for it. Crime is down. That's what matters. These guys… sure they have rights too, but… other criminals are scared of the hood and being shot with an arrow. It's preventative."
Oliver was surprised to hear that she supported the hood and his methods. "You're not afraid the Hood has some other ulterior method?"
"Why would I? I have never met the Hood, though one day I hope to be lucky enough to meet him. To thank him for what he's doing to clean up the city." Bella said with a smile. "I admire him. I know that's silly."
Oliver just kissed her, his heart feeling a little fuller, just hearing her say those words. "I love you." He murmured against her lips.
Bella paused, her dark eyes sweeping up to look at him. "Ollie…"
"I know." Oliver said with a small nod. "You don't have to say it." He whispered and kissed her again and then again. His hands moved down her sides and to her hips. He moved one hand over her belly and felt the small buldge, which made him pause to pull back. He looked down at his hand and smoothed his hand over her belly again, feeling the bulge of the baby. "Bella…"
"Hmm?"
"You're starting to show some." Oliver pointed out.
Bella frowned and looked down at his hands. "I am…."
Oliver smiled and kissed her cheek. "It's a good thing. Everything is healthy. He's healthy." He murmured.
Bella nodded, swallowing a little and then stepped back and ran her hands through her hair. "Ollie….I'm still… so scared." She said and turned and looked at him. "I just… something feels off…"
Oliver frowned. "What do you mean?"
"I can't explain it Ollie. I just… don't know. This doesn't feel right Oliver." Bella said finally.
"What are you trying to say?" Oliver asked. "Bella, I am perfectly fine with this."
"But I'm not!" Bella said, and shook her head. "I… can't… I can't do this." She said. "I can't be a stain on the Queen name. I have court with Edward and if he even suspects… he can force me to do a DNA test and he has a right to. This is just… too much. I can't. I have… I have to go." Bella said, feeling the emotions overwhelming her.
Oliver tried to stop her but she left, slipping out of the office and she managed to go out the front of the mansion without anyone seeing her. Oliver didn't know what just happened, but he felt his heart hurt at watching her leave. His phone rang and it was the hood's phone. He sighed and answered it. "Yes."
"Cameras at Starling Station picked up on a guy putting drugs in a locker." Felicity's voice filtered through the phone.
"I'm on my way." Oliver said with a sigh.
Bella called an Uber as she walked to the end of the driveway. It didn't take long for the Uber to drive up and pick her up. "Thank you Ben." She said and verified the image of the driver to the man that was picking her up. She felt the tears threaten, but she didn't want to cry. Not right now. She instructed Ben to drop her off at CNRI, and he drove her there. She got out and walked into the building. She flipped on the light and went to her desk and sat there a moment before she cried. She felt just so many emotions run through her, but the main one that ran through her was just utter fear. Fear of not being able to connect to the baby. She was carrying Edward's baby. Not Oliver's and she couldn't do that to him. Oliver deserved better. Ren deserved better. She was a mess and there was no way she could bring a baby into the world. Not like this, not Edward's baby. She came up with a hundred reasons why she could do this, but there were a thousand more reasons why she couldn't. She wiped at her face and tried to stop crying, but she couldn't. She felt sick to her stomach and so she leaned over and threw up in the trash can. She grabbed the water off her desk from earlier and took a deep drink. She was all shaky now and she felt dizzy. She tried to get to her feet, but she felt the world shift and the edges of her vision started to darken. "What?" She felt heavy and then soon she was tossed into darkness.
[Trigger Warning]
Bella woke, feeling sluggish. Her legs felt heavy and she had to blink a few times before her vision cleared. She was completely naked . She looked around and saw that she was on a bed, but it wasn't her own bed. The door opened and Edward walked in and she felt the panic rush through her. "What are you doing!" She said, stammering a little.
Edward grinned, turning on a light in the room, so he could take in the look of her. "We're somewhere, where no one can hear you scream if you tried. We have court in two weeks, so you better be on your best behavior." He said and then started unbuttoning his shirt.
"Why are you doing this?"
"Because Bella… you're my wife. I see the magazines. Frolicking around with Oliver Queen," Edward said Oliver's name snidely. He then unfastened his pants and his dick sprang free. He groaned a little as his hand slid over the shaft. "Now, we're going to rekindle our love. You're going to agree this time and you will cum for me. Over and over again."
"Edward, please don't do this." Bella said, her lip quivering. She tried to move but she couldn't and she didn't understand why.
"I used a mild sedative, with a paralysis effect. It'll wear off as the night goes on. Ren is safe with my parents, so they won't be missing you." Edward said and climbed on top of her. "You're mine. Say it." He whispered in her ear as he slid his cock against her folds.
Bella felt the tears rolling down her face and she sobbed a little. "I'm yours." She choked out.
"Say it like you mean it Bella." Edward said and shoved his dick inside her hard. She cried out a little and sobbed more. He thrust hard again and then again, his hands putting pressure over her belly as he dug inside her, penetrating her deep.
"Please stop! Please!" Bella said, panic for the baby she was carrying. He was going to hurt the baby.
Edward leaned back, watching his cock slide in and out of her, seeing blood and he stopped. "Mmm. You bleed for me." He said and purred a little.
Bella closed her eyes. "Edward, I'm pregnant. Please stop."
Edward stopped then, his green eyes burning into hers like flames. "You let that bastard put a child in you!" He roared and then he put his hands around her throat and tightened.
Bella gasped, her arms so heavy that she couldn't lift them to fight back. "Please." She squeaked out. "Please. The baby is yours." She managed to get out.
Edward's hands stopped crushing her windpipe and he let up. "My child…"He murmured and then moved his hand over her belly gently, like he was petting her. His cock twitched inside her, excitement filling him and he started thrusting again. He grunted like a wild animal as he fucked her, and she sobbed. At least he was gentler now that he knew that she was carrying his child. He came hard inside her and then his mouth went to hers crushing hers, forcing her mouth open so she had no choice but to let him kiss her.
She wished a hundred times over that she had stayed at the dinner party with Oliver. She was an idiot, and she didn't know if she would ever be able to look Oliver in the eyes again. She just closed her eyes and let Edward do what he wanted. The tears hot on her face, but she couldn't feel anything. The drug that he used had been effective in making it easy for her to withstand the assault.
[The Next Day]
Oliver knocked on Bella's door at the townhouse and she didn't answer. He sighed and then called her phone and got her voicemail. He looked at his watch and figured she might have left already. He went back to his car and got in with Diggle. "She was upset Digg. Last night… she was freaked out and I didn't go after her. She's not answering my calls. I told her I loved her." He sighed. "Maybe she's at the office."
Diggle looked at his boss and friend. "She probably needs time Oliver. She's likely overwhelmed."
"I need to see her Digg. I have to make sure she's okay." Oliver said and Diggle drove to CNRI. Oliver got out and walked inside, taking the elevator up. He saw Laurel and Tommy at Laurel's desk but no sign of Bella.
Tommy frowned when he saw Oliver without Bella. "Where's Bella?"
"That's why I'm here. She's not here?"
Laurel stood frowning. "No. She's not with you? What happened?"
Oliver sighed. "We had… an argument. She ran out of the mansion last night. I just wanted to make sure she was okay. Maybe she is ignoring me. She didn't answer the door at the house."
"What did you do?" Tommy ask, defensive for Bella.
"I told her I loved her Tommy. She… freaked." Oliver said and pulled his phone out of his pocket and tried calling her phone again. When it went to voicemail, he shook his head. "She's not answering."
Tommy took his phone from his pocket and called Bella then. Bella answered on the third ring.
"Tommy, I can't talk right now." Bella said, her voice strained.
Tommy frowned. "Are you okay? You don't sound well?"
"I'm not feeling well. I was about to call Laurel… let her know I can't make court today." Bella said. "I have to go." She said and hung up.
Tommy frowned and looked at Laurel. "She said she's not feeling well. Said she can't make court today."
Oliver didn't understand why she answered for Tommy and not for him. "She answered for you…"
"She didn't sound good Oliver. Maybe she doesn't feel good. Did she drink too much at the dinner party maybe?" Tommy asked.
Oliver ran his hands over his face. "No. She didn't drink. She can't drink right now." He murmured.
"What do you mean?" Laurel asked, seeing the geniune worry on Oliver's face.
"I need to call Carlisle. See if Ren made it to school okay." Oliver said and pulled his phone back out and called Carlisle.
"Mr. Queen." Carlisle answered.
"Did Ren make it to school okay?"
"She did. Esme dropped her off this morning. Bella text and said she wasn't feeling well and that she was going to be sleeping most the day." Carlisle relayed.
Oliver felt like something was off. "Something isn't right Carlisle."
"What do you mean?"
"She was fine yesterday. The medicine has been helping her and she's called out of work? She never misses court. She had a cold two weeks ago and she still went to court." Oliver relayed.
"You know that pregnancy can be more tiring sometimes. She's probably just exhausted. Is something wrong with you two?"
Oliver sighed. "I don't know. Um. If you talk to her, tell her I need to talk to her."
"Okay. I will."
Oliver hung up and looked at her desk. "Something isn't right." He murmured again.
Tommy frowned at his friend. "Maybe she just needs space. You guys have been moving fast, maybe she wasn't ready for the I love you yet bud. She's okay."
Laurel was with Oliver. Something wasn't right. "No, Ollie is right. Bella never misses court. I have seen her with the full on flu, working at court. She also wouldn't let whatever it is with her and Oliver affect her work either."
Oliver looked around her desk, spotting something shiny on the floor by her chair and he stooped, moving the chair and seeing the bottle of water dropped on the floor and it was wet and the shiny thing was her bracelet she was wearing last night. It was the bracelet Ren gave her for mother's day. He remembered because Bella told him the story. He picked up the bracelet and then looked at the water, noticing a slight pigment to the water. He stood. "She was here last night."
"She probably came to the office late." Tommy said, watching Oliver's face as he did his detective thing he did as the hood.
Oliver picked the water up and sniffed it. There was a faint smell to it, but he wasn't sure what it was. "She's in distress." He said and looked at Tommy. "How did she sound Tommy?"
"Um. Tired I guess? Her voice was a little strained, like she had been crying maybe." Tommy recalled.
Oliver shook his head. "Edward has her."
"What?" Tommy said. "Why would he take her from her job?"
"He was following her. He had to have known this was her desk. I think he drugged her. She's not home sick. I went by her house. She didn't answer the door. All the lights were off." Oliver said and then he pulled his phone back out and sent a text to Felicity for her to ping Bella's phone.
Laurel didn't like this any more than Oliver did. "He wouldn't hurt her right?"
"Oh. He would." Oliver said and then looked at his phone when Felicity texted back saying her phone was turned off and she couldn't get a GPS location on Bella. "Damnit." He cursed.
"Should we call the police?" Tommy asked. "I mean, if she's been kidnapped."
So many thoughts ran through Oliver's head. What Edward could be doing to her right now, and the fact that she was pregnant. "Call the police." Oliver agreed. "Yeah."
"I'll call my dad." Laurel said and took her phone out and walked away to call her dad.
Oliver looked at Tommy. "I should have put an arrow in him." He said, his voice low.
"That could have made it worse." Tommy said. "Bella is strong. She'll be okay."
"Tommy… Bella is pregnant." Oliver said, his voice still low.
Tommy blinked in surprise. "What? How? You have never gotten a girl pregnant before, you're careful."
"Edward raped her. Six weeks ago." Olive explained. "We started… dating shortly after. I am taking responsibility for the baby because if he finds out… it'll make it harder for her court case against him. Not to mention Ren."
Laurel returned. "Dad said that she hasn't been missing 24 hours and the fact that Tommy actually spoke to her… he can't open a case. He said that she's probably just resting and if we lose contact for 24 hours and she actually goes missing, then he'll investigate."
"Damnit." Oliver cursed again. "I've got to go."
"Ollie wait!" Laurel said. "She's probably resting. Maybe Tommy is right. Maybe we're jumping to conclusions."
Oliver just shook his head and left, leaving Tommy and Laurel there at the office. He went back down to the car. He got in and looked at Diggle. "I want everything on Edward Cullen." He said and Diggle drove towards Verdant.
Bella was able to pull clothes on. They were clothes from her house which meant Edward had been there and had brought back clothes. She wasn't bleeding much and she didn't think she was miscarrying at all. She was worried about that, but it was because Edward was too rough. She combed through her hair and looked in the mirror as Edward came up behind her.
"Now. You're going to drop your case against me. We're going to have family dinner. I've missed my parents and brother. I also think it's overdo, seeing my daughter."
Bella swallowed. "Keep Ren out of this."
"She is my daughter." Edward said. "I have the right to see my daughter."
"She's too young to understand this Edward." Bella said.
Edward chuckled a little and then his hands moved to her shoulders and then to her neck and he started squeezing a little. "You are mine. You do as I say. I will kill your father, that's right I have the means and resources to do so and if you want to stay in this shit town, then I suggest you do what I say." He said and she nodded and he stopped squeezing and she coughed out, sucking in air.
Bella feared for her dad's life and for all the people she cared about. Edward was capable of such dark things. "Yes. Of course." She said and waited for him to walk away. She let out a little sob. She pressed a hand to her belly and then covered her mouth with the other. She could be strong. She could do this. At least long enough to where she could take Edward out her own way. She wouldn't be like this forever. She made a vow right then and there. She looked at herself in the mirror, she would be strong. No matter what. She thought about Ren and the baby she was carrying. She would be strong for them and she would be strong for herself. For now, she had to play the part… the scared version of Bella. She felt like something in her had snapped and the anxiety and panic she had felt before, was turning into a numbness and that is what she needed right now. She was putting up her walls, building a mental barrier that would help protect her while she endured the dangers that were Edward Cullen.
Bella walked into CNRI, her turtleneck hid the bruising around her neck and at least it was cold outside to justify her wearing turtlenecks. She talked to Carlisle and told him that she was feeling better and that she would get Ren after work. Carlisle tried to mediate for Oliver, but she told Carlisle that she needed time and had ended the call.
Laurel looked surprised when she saw Bella. She stood quickly rushing over to her. "Are you okay?"
Bella frowned and looked at Laurel. "What?"
"You were missing all day yesterday." Laurel said as she walked with Bella to her desk.
"I wasn't missing." Bella said. "I wasn't feeling well."
"You've been sick before and never missed court. And Ollie said something about Edward."
Bella looked at Laurel. "I don't want to talk about it. Oliver and I are over." She said and put her brief case on the desk and opened it, pulling out the files. "How did Hanson's case go yesterday?"
"What? You and Ollie can't be over."
"I can't do this right now Laurel. I just want to focus on work. How was the case?"
Laurel sighed, resigning all of her questions, holding them back for later. "Bail, fifty-thousand, five thousand cash bond." She said and went to her desk. "At least call Ollie. Let him know you weren't kidnapped." She said and then her desk phone rang, interupting.
Bella sighed and pulled her phone out and saw all the messages from Oliver. She dialed Oliver's number and he answered instantly. "Oliver. I'm not kidnapped. I'm fine. I can't talk right now, but I'll agree to lunch. Noon." She said and hung up before he could say anything. Her heart was hurting right now. She didn't want to break up with Oliver. She wanted to be with him, wanted a life with him, but right now, she needed to do this. Edward would hurt Oliver if she didn't. She then sent Tommy a message telling him that she needed him at three today. It was the only window of time she had for this, and she also told him not to tell Oliver or Laurel.
By the time lunch rolled around, she had already sorted all her cases for court at one. She only had two cases and they were just appearances. Bail hearings, that wouldn't take long and then she had an appointment at three. She looked up at Oliver when he walked in. He seemed so worried as his blue eyes scanned her to make sure she was okay. "Oliver I-"
"Come on." He said softly. "Let's get food." He said and she sighed and stood. Laurel was at the court house so she didn't have to listen to Laurel poke at her for more information. She left with Oliver, going out into the windy air of Starling City. She pulled her coat tighter. "Can you tell me why you avoided me all day yesterday?" Oliver said once they were outside and not inside a building.
"It's over Oliver." Bella said, her voice strong. She had practiced this over and over already in her head and out loud on the way over to CNRI.
Oliver stopped walking and put a hand on her arm and turned her to face him. "Bella, I don't understand. Last night… maybe I should have waited to tell you I love you, but Bella… I thought we were… I thought we were on the same page."
"I can't do this with you. It's too much for me to handle. With my career and with Ren, I just don't… I don't want that. Not anymore. I thought maybe I could, but I can't Oliver. It's best that you don't keep communication with Ren or with my in laws. I am married still, and I need you to understand that… I don't feel the same way about you." Bella said and then looked at her watch. "I don't have time to eat a meal with you. I'm sorry Oliver. I hope that we can remain friends." She said and then she turned away from him, her strength waning. It hurt so much to break it off with him, but she had to. She didn't have a choice.
Oliver wasn't sure what had happened. Had he pushed her too fast? He was an idiot. He ran a hand over his face, trying not to get emotional. He watched the love of his life walk away from him, heading back inside CNRI. He looked up at the sky as snow began to fall. Why was this happening?
Tommy met Bella at the courthouse. Laurel was back at the office so there wouldn't be any issue picking Bella up. Bella was cryptic about what she needed, but Tommy wasn't going to leave her when she needed help. He opened the car door and she ducked down inside and he ducked in after her. "Where are we going?" Tommy asked her, once they were inside.
Bella looked at Chad, Tommy's driver. "Go to 168 Moores Ave." She said and Chad nodded and started driving.
Tommy frowned. "Bella, talk to me. Oliver is a mess. Are you two really done?" He left Verdant and the lair and Oliver was just working out on the wing chun dummy and nothing could break his concentration, so at least he didn't have to explain where he was going in the middle of the day.
"It's true Merlyn. It's over." Bella said, not looking at Tommy.
Tommy sighed. "I'm sure whatever it is, it can be fixed. He said he loves you."
"I don't feel the same way." Bella said, her dark eyes now sweeping over to Tommy's. "I need you to keep this a secret Tommy. I mean it Merlyn." She said.
Tommy nodded. "Of course, Bella you can tell me anything."
Bella swallowed. "I'm having an abortion. That's where we're going. Oliver doesn't need to know. Do you understand."
Tommy knew that Bella didn't know that he knew about what happened with Edward and he wasn't going to bring it up. "Bella… Oliver would want to know this."
"I don't want him to know." Bella said and looked back out the window. The only reason why she brought Tommy was because the doctor at the clinic said that it would be a good idea to have some one with because there was a mild sedative involved and she didn't trust that she could get back home without help.
Tommy grabbed her hand in his and squeezed it. "It's going to be okay."
Bella just nodded and stared out the window until the car pulled up at the clinic. Tommy opened the door and got out and then helped Bella out and guided her inside the clinic.
Bella felt a little empty and tired from the whole ordeal. She was back at CNRI. She was making sure she had her files for the morning since she had court early. She grabbed what she needed and left, walking back home. Tommy had to go back to the club before it opened, so she was walking by herself. She needed that time to think things through. She already dropped her divorce contest against Edward like Edward had instructed. He was at Central City right now so in the very least she had a few days to collect her thoughts and to work through her plan. She felt the snow fall around her and she walked. She didn't realize she paused as she got close to the club. She was lost in her thoughts when she ran into Tommy.
Tommy steadied her, his hands gentle on her arms. "You shouldn't be out in the cold. I can have Chad drive you home."
Bella shook her head. "I'm fine. Thanks Tommy." She said and then brushed past him and kept walking. Tommy watched her walk away. Bella made it to the school, and picked Ren up in time. She had an after school theater thing that they were doing for the fourth grade play and so she timed everything perfect.
Ren smiled at her mom brightly. "Mom! I am going to be Rapunzel." She said twirling around in a circle as they walked down the snow covered sidewalk.
Bella smiled at her daughter. "That's great."
"I'm going to be the best Rapunzel ever. Is Ollie going to make the play?"
"Ren, me and Oliver broke up." Bella said gently.
"What? That's not good." Ren stopped twirling to face her mother. "What happened? I really really really love Ollie!" She exclaimed.
Bella didn't know how to explain it. "I just can't date anyone right now. Listen, this is between the grownups."
Ren teared up. "So you broke up with Ollie…"
"Ren…"
Ren shook her head. "He was going to be my dad!" She cried out and then she turned and ran the rest of the way towards the house.
Bella sighed and followed quickly behind her getting to the house and opened the door. Ren had used her key to go inside and Bella had to use her own key to unlock the door as well since Ren locked her out of the house. "Renesme Hope Cullen, you come here right now." She raised her voice slightly.
Ren came down the stairs, tears running down her face. "I have a right to be upset mom. Ollie was perfect. You're too busy for me and you're too busy for him. He was your prince charming and you ruined it." She said and stormed back upstairs.
"Renesme! You come back here!" She yelled up the stairs, but was met with a slam of the bedroom door. Bella was in shock. Her and Ren had never gotten into a disagreement before and she was shocked by how upset Ren got. She sighed and decided to give Ren her space. It was hard to see her little girl this upset, but she had to protect Ren. Even if she had to be the bad guy right now. She went to the living room and took off her coat and hung it up before taking her brief case to the coffee table. She felt a little crampy, which she knew was expected. She never thought that was something she could do. But she did it, and she felt… like she had a weight lifted off of her. She sifted through her files and got her notebook out and started making notes.
Before long there was a knock on the door and that interrupted Bella's work process. She glanced at her watch and noted the time was six now. She sighed and got up to answer the door. It was Tommy carrying take out from Jade Dragon. She smiled. "Dinner?"
"Well, Laurel is playing damage control with her dad and the latest Hood episode and Ren text and said that she was hungry."
"It's only six."
"I know." Tommy said. "She text Oliver." He said, his voice low.
Bella sighed. "I told her that me and Oliver broke up. She's not taking it well."
"I gathered as much. Oliver didn't say much, just make sure you guys had food."
"What about the club?"
"Thea is there. I know she's eighteen before you say anything, but she's really been helping a lot here and there. I think it's mostly to get out of the house and away from Moira being overbearing." Tommy said and walked into the dining room and set the food down on the table. He turned and looked at Bella. "But, since I'm here, I wanted to check on you. Make sure you aren't in any pain, or… other side effects?"
Bella nodded. "I'm fine. Just some cramping, but otherwise, I am okay. Thank you Merlyn."
Tommy studied her a few moments. "Are you sure?"
"I'm sure. Thank you for dinner. I will talk to my daughter, potentially take her phone away."
"Bells… she needs time to grieve this. She was attached to Oliver."
Bella sighed. "I know. She had it in her head that he was going to be her dad." She ran her hands over her face. "I don't know how to explain that life doesn't work like that." She sighed. "No matter what, I'm the bad guy."
"That's not true. Sometimes things… just don't work." Tommy said. "She'll be okay. Just give her some space and time to process."
"You're right."
Tommy smiled. "Always am." He said and then he reached up and brushed her hair back out of her face. He stared down at her. "Take care of yourself. Call me if you need something." He said and he left her there with the chinese food. He had to because he had the sudden urge to kiss her and that would be completely stupid and ruin so many things, and he didn't want to do that.
Bella sighed and went to the stairs and walked up them. She knocked on Ren's closed door before she opened it and looked inside. "Ren." She said and didn't hear a response. She looked at the lump on the bed and sighed. She had fallen asleep. She shook her head and then closed the door and walked back down the stairs and opened one of the boxes and grabbed chopsticks and started eating her dinner. When she had enough to put the rest in the fridge and then went back to the living room. When Ren woke up, she would come down and eat when she was ready.
Bella looked at Carlisle and Esme across the table from them. "Carlisle… Esme. I wanted to call a meeting to discuss a couple things. The first is… I dropped my divorce from Edward three days ago."
Esme frowned and looked at her husband before looking back at Bella. "Is it because he's pushing back. I know that it's scary, but we won't let him hurt you."
Bella shook her head. "No, that's not it. I have decided to reconcile with Edward."
This was a big shock to Carlisle and Esme. Esme's mouth dropped open and Carlisle was trying to find his words.
"He is coming back to town this evening. We are going to have a dinner together. We are going to seek marriage counseling and he is going to officially meet Renesme."
"You can't be serious. Bella, what has changed? He isn't a good man. He has hurt you. Is he threatening you?" Carlisle asked, upset at the sudden change.
"No, he hasn't hurt me."
"What about Oliver?" Esme asked. "Oliver is a fine young man, you two are great together."
Bella swallowed. "It made me realize that I don't have feelings for Oliver, that I still love Edward and we are going to pursue reconciliation. I was being dramatic before. Throwing a tantrum. I'm sorry for this. Your son is not a monster." She said and it had to be forced. Edward was a monster, the boogeyman in anyone's nightmare, but she had to stomach it for now. "I had a miscarriage three days ago. I went in to the hospital and the baby… didn't make it."
Esme didn't even know that Bella was pregnant. She gasped and put a hand over her mouth, tears coming to her eyes. "My sweetness, are you okay? Is Oliver okay?"
"Oliver doesn't know." Bella said. "We broke up. I will…tell him on my own time. I just want to process this, and move on with my life. With Edward." She said and her dark eyes met Carlisle's blue ones.
Carlisle was studying her, not understanding what was going on. Why she didn't come to him when she lost the baby. He felt lost right now, like everything he thought he knew, he didn't. He saw the evidence of Edward's abuse on Bella. He personally saw it first hand, the xrays of her fractured pelvis, and he was there, trying to save her life when he threw her through a second story window. "Bella, I can't accept this." He shook his head, wiping a tear from his eye. "I saw what he did to you. He is a monster."
"Carlisle," Esme started.
"No Esme, I know he's our son, but he's a monster. A psychopath." Carlisle stood up. "I won't accept this." He said and walked away.
Bella looked down at her hands. She knew it was going to be hard for them to hear and hard for them to accept. But this is what she had to do until she could move through her plan. "Esme."
"Carlisle's right." Esme sniffed. "Edward… isn't redeemable Bella. Whatever he has told you… promised you, it is a lie. He's not going to do the counseling. He will hurt you again, or worse… Bella please reconsider."
"I've made up my mind Esme. I owe it to him and to Ren to try again." Bella said and stood. "I love you both. Can you pick Ren up from school. We're meeting at the italian bistro for dinner when Edward makes it back in to town." She asked.
Esme nodded. "Of course." She sniffed again.
Bella grabbed her brief case and stood. "Thank you." She said and then she left. A tear rolled down her face. She was trying so hard to bottle it all inside. It made her chest hurt, so she took a detour to the bar close to CNRI. She went in and sat on the stool and ordered a drink.
A couple hours later, she was feeling the affects of the alcohol. She sat alone at the bar, just drinking as she worked through her mind everything she was about to put Ren through.
"Bella?" Oliver's voice filtered through the alcohol fog that was surrounding Bella.
Bella looked up at Oliver and sighed. "You found me." She slurred a little.
Oliver was immediately concerned for her and the baby. "Bella, you shouldn't be drinking."
"Why?" Bella frowned, her brows furrowing together.
"You know why." Oliver said and pushed the glass away from her and helped her to her feet.
Bella pushed away from Oliver. "I'm capable of standing by myself, thank you." She said and straightened her jacket. She looked at her watch and sighed. "I'm late." She said and walked out of the bar into the cold outside. Oliver followed after laying money on the bar.
"Bella, you can't walk like this in your state. Where are you going? What about the baby. What is wrong with you?"
"I'm not pregnant anymore." Bella slurred a little. "I'm late for the dinner with my husband and in-laws." She said and took her phone from her pocket to text Esme and Carlisle to let them know she was running late.
Oliver couldn't believe what he was hearing. "What do you mean you're not pregnant anymore?"
Bella sighed. "I lost the baby three days ago Oliver. I don't want to talk about it." She was starting to sober up some as the cold continued to sting her cheeks.
Oliver shook his head, putting a hand on her arm. "Why didn't you tell me? Bella… you said you wanted to remain friends and I respect that, but I still care about you deeply."
"I don't want to talk about it. I'm reconciling with my husband Oliver." Bella said it out loud. "I can't… I can't talk to you right now. I don't have the energy to do so. Now, I really have to go." She said and moved around him, walking away from him.
Oliver didn't understand why she would go back to Edward. Something wasn't right. She felt off and he knew, just knew that she was in trouble somehow and she was trying to protect him.
Dinner was silent. Ren stared at Edward like he was a foreign object and she didn't dare say a word to him.
Bella cleared her throat. "Carlisle, did Ren tell you she's going to be Rapunzel in the play?"
"She did." Carlisle and looked at his granddaughter. "She's perfect for the role.
Jasper was tense the whole time. He didn't trust Edward and the way he was looking at Ren and at Bella. Bella hadn't looked at him directly and he didn't understand why on Earth, Bella would take Edward back. After everything that she had been through and had worked hard for.
"Yes, she is perfect for the role." Edward agreed as he lifted his wine. "I am proud of my daughter." He said, the word daughter, sliding from his lips with a bit of exaggeration.
Ren's eyes looked at Esme, a little afraid of Edward and how he was looking at her. "I need to use the restroom." She said suddenly and stood from the table and left. She was old enough to go to the bathroom by herself now. Once in the bathroom, she went to a stall and she cried. She didn't like Edward and he made her feel scared inside.
Bella picked up her water glass and took a drink. She had managed to sober up more as she sat there in the awkwardness of the dinner. Suddenly there was gunfire and it forced everyone down to the ground. Panic shot through Bella as she thought about Ren being in the bathroom.
"Everyone stay down!" One man yelled and there was a confrontation. Two men seemed to be arguing and then there was more gunfire. "WHERE IS IT!" The man screamed.
"I don't have any on me!" Another man exclaimed.
"I NEED IT!"
"I swear to you!"
More gunfire.
Bella's heart was racing in her chest as she only worried about Renesme. She heard the sirens of Starling City police and was thankful that someone had called the police. "Jasper, can you see the bathroom?" She whispered, her voice shaking a little.
Jasper shook his head. "No, but I'm going to army crawl that way."
More gunfire.
Bella flinched and then heard crashing of the glass in front. She heard screaming and more gunfire and then gurgling sounds. Footsteps crunched on the glass and heard some more struggling.
"Harbor Banks. You have failed this city."
Bella frowned as she heard the deep voice of someone. She peeked around the chair and saw the hood as he managed to tie up the gunmen. "Thank god." She said and she scrambled to her feet. "Ren!" She called out and ran towards the bathrooms. She found Ren laying on the ground, blood pooling around her. "Oh god no!" She cried out as she went to the ground beside her daughter who had been hit with a stray bullet.
Oliver rushed over to Bella and Ren, his heart pounding in his chest. He heard Felicity in his ear.
"Oliver, the police are about to storm the restaurant, you have to go."
Oliver growled a little. Bella looked up, tears staining her face. "Please help." She said, her voice shaky.
"CARLISLE!" Esme screeched as she shook her husband. Jasper was torn between his father and Ren. The police sirens were getting closer.
Oliver stooped down and put his fingers to Ren's neck and felt the weak pulse. "She needs the hospital now." He said, the voice modulator disguising his voice.
Edward scrambled to his feet, dusting off and whirled to see Bella with a bleeding Ren and the vigilante hunched over her. "Get away from them." Edward said his voice layered with venom.
Oliver stood and strung an arrow and spun and glared at him. "I will put an arrow through you. Do not get any closer."
Bella sobbed a little. "She needs help now."
Oliver spoke again. "The police are here. She'll get the help she needs." He said gently and then stared down Edward. "Edward Cullen."
"What do you want with me?" Edward said, his eyes widened from having an arrow trained on him.
Oliver didn't say anything else. He just moved towards the back, moving through the restaurant until he hit the back alley and then fired his bow and swung up towards the rooftops before the police could close in on him.
Bella sobbed as she put pressure on Ren's wound. "Hang in there sweetheart. Mommy's here." She cried hard.
Jasper moved past his brother, going to the ground beside Bella, his hands moving over hers. "Bella, I have this. Relax." He said gently.
There was a lot of crying as people wept for their family that also got hurt in the gunfire. The police were there and shortly after Bella was sitting in the back of an ambulance, Edward sitting beside her in silence as they drove to the hospital with Ren.
Bella wore all black and it seemed appropriate that it was would storm today of all days. She felt numb inside and nothing could ever change the way she felt. This deep feeling of loss. The church was filled with people and Bella wasn't sure she even recognized half of these people. She felt a hand touch her shoulder and she looked up at Carlisle. His arm was in a sling from where he was shot last week in the shooting. "It's time." He said and Bella just nodded and walked towards the front pew and sat down. She clenched the tissues in her hands as a preacher got up and stood at the front. She felt the roaring of her heart in her ears and she couldn't stand it. She couldn't sit here and listen to an entire eulogy. Not right now. Not like this. She stood abruptly and walked out. There were some whispers in the church, but she didn't care. She needed fresh air and she didn't care how bad it was snowing outside. She closed her eyes and let the cold roll over her, numbing her even more.
"Bella." Oliver's voice sounded. He had watched her leave the church, and he had followed her out.
"I don't want to be here. Why are these people even here? Who are they?" Bella said, as she looked at Oliver, her eyes were still a little bloodshot. No amount of crying made her feel better.
Oliver put his hands in his pockets as he stared out at the snow as it fell hard around the church and covered the ground. "They're friends of your father's."
Bella shook her head. "I need to be in Starling. Ren is still in ICU. I need-"
"It's okay." Oliver interrupted her. He reached for her, pulling her close to him, his hands coming up to frame her face. "He was your dad. You loved him and he's gone and it hurts. It's okay to feel that pain."
"I don't want to feel it." Bella said, her lip quivering. "I have cried… and cried and cried more than I have ever cried before. Cancer killed him. I knew it was going to happen. I knew it and I should have… moved him to Starling to spend more time with him. I should have… called more." She sobbed a little.
"Shhh." Oliver closed his arms around her and she melted into the heat of his embrace. "It's okay."
"He's gone." She sobbed out against Oliver's chest and he just held her tighter as her legs caved under her. He took on her weight and just held her as she sobbed against his chest and let it all out on the stoop of Fork's Cathedral.
[Starling General Hospital]
Bella smoothed the blankets over Ren's legs. She was hooked up to so many machines right now. She hadn't woken up yet and the shooting happened exactly a week ago. Nothing could prepare a mother for seeing their child laying in a hospital bed like this. There was no change, and the doctors kept saying that there was brain activity, and that there was no definitive on when she would wake up, but her body was healing right now.
There was a knock on the door and Oliver was standing there with a large white bunny stuffed animal. Bunnies were Renesme's favorite animal, specifically white ones, so he bought the biggest bunny he could find. "Any change?"
Bella shook her head. "No, not yet. I haven't seen the doctor today, but they did scans earlier so I'm just waiting. Where's Edward?"
"He's in the waiting room on the phone with… someone. I didn't ask." Oliver said, not liking how close Edward was getting. "Why is he here?"
"I don't know. I can't tell him no since… you know in case they need blood or… medical stuff. I don't know Oliver, I don't want him here, but then… I can't… let anything happen to Ren."
Oliver nodded and then set the bunny over on the chair and walked over to Bella. He grabbed her hands in his and brought them to his lips and kissed them. "She's going to be okay."
"I hope so." Bella murmured and then her eyes lit up when she saw the doctor come in. "Any change?"
"Unfortunately, the remaining kidney that Renesme has, isn't functioning and is shutting down. I have moved to put her on dialysis to sustain her and I have placed her on the transplant list. You and Mr. Cullen are not matches to donate blood, so donating a kidney would not work either." The doctor said.
Oliver frowned. "Can anyone test?"
"Well, of course. If there are other relatives." The doctor said. "I wish there was better news. But stay hopeful. Renesme is young and strong. Her brain function is still there. It's… on the low end, but there is activity. Keep talking to her." The doctor said and then he left the room.
Bella felt her lip quiver. "Oh god."
"Hey. I'm going right now to go get tested."
"You're not related to her." Bella said, shaking her head. "The chances that you are even a match is astronomically low."
"We have the same blood type okay. We're both O negative. That's a good thing right?" Oliver asked.
Bella sniffed and wiped her hands over her face. "I can't ask you to donate a kidney to her. Oliver that's a big ask."
"I will give her a kidney if I can." Oliver said. "I'll be right back." He said and kissed her forehead before he caught up to the doctor.
Bella looked at her daughter's sleeping face. The tubes and wires that were attached to her were scary and she didn't know what to do. She sat in the chair and just grabbed her daughter's hand and rubbed it, kissing it as she waited for Ren to pop up any moment, awake from this awful nightmare.
Jasper, Carlisle, Esme, Emmett and even Alice and Rosalie came home to test to see if they could donate a kidney. Tommy and Laurel even went and got tested and so did Larry Lance. He hated to see a little girl so bright and kind like Renesme laying in the hospital.
Oliver wasn't a perfect match. It was disheartening to him that he couldn't help save Ren's life. He felt like he was to blame for not helping fast enough as the Hood. He had failed Bella and he had failed Ren.
Jasper was a decent match, but there were some factors to consider, since Jasper had an autoimmune disorder that could potentially hurt him if he donated. Which he didn't even care, he wanted Ren to live.
Tommy was a match for Ren, a really good match and he was prepped down going into surgery to give a kidney to his honorary niece. Bella was pacing back and forward while she waited for Tommy and Ren to get out of surgery.
"Everything is going to be okay." Oliver said as he stopped Bella from pacing. His hands were on her shoulder's as he stared down at her. He heard someone clear their throat and he took a step back and glanced over at Edward. Edward stared Oliver down, pushing in taking Oliver's spot in front of Bella.
"Honey, everything is going to be okay. Renesme is going to pull through surgery." Edward said, reassuring. It was all an act. This was how he was normally in front of everyone. Since Ren was shot he had been at the hospital and that wasn't because his daughter was dying in a hospital bed but because Oliver Queen was hovering and he didn't like that. He pulled Bella against him and Bella didn't fight it. She just put hugged Edward, her eyes looking over Edward's shoulder at Oliver, who's jaw was tense with anger. She leaned back and Edward kissed her and she let him before she smoothed a hand through her hair.
"Um, did you check on Jasper. He was upset." Bella asked Edward.
Edward sighed. "He's just mad because he couldn't donate. He'll get over it."
"Maybe check on him anyways." Bella said gently.
Edward sighed again. "Fine." He said and kissed her again, this time deeper and he did it because Oliver was there watching. He left her and walked away to go outside to find Jasper.
Oliver swallowed and looked away. "Laurel," He said, calling out to his other friend. Laurel was just in a trance as she waited for Tommy to get done with surgery.
Laurel looked up at Oliver. "Hm?"
"Coffee?" He asked.
"Sure."
Oliver nodded and then looked at Bella. "Coffee?"
Bella blew out a breath. "Yes. Thank you." She said and watched Oliver leave.
Laurel wiped her face and stood and went to Bella. "Oliver is in pain."
"He seemed okay." Bella lied. She knew that Oliver was struggling with seeing Edward's hands on her and kissing her and she couldn't do anything about it.
"He is in love with you and you're… reconciling with Edward?"
"I don't want to talk about it." Bella said and wiped her face some. "I can't even think about anything other than Ren and Tommy. I should have talked him out of it." She closed her eyes.
"That wasn't happening." Laurel shook her head. "He wanted this Bella. If I was a match, I would have donated too. I would be in there instead. Any one of us would be in there. Oliver was only one marker away from being a perfect match. He would be in there. Ren is family. You are family." She said, her voice soft.
Edward returned. "Jasper is okay. I have to go to Central City. I have a meeting I have to get to. Call me with updated. I'm just a train ride away." He murmured and leaned in and kissed her.
Bella just nodded and kissed him back and watched him leave. She felt relief when he was gone.
[Central City]
Edward was not happy that he had to be pulled away from the hospital. He walked into his office. He was CEO of Jax Incorporated. He had been the CEO for some time and he had an alias there in Central City as Kael Jax and he liked to keep it that way. He didn't need people to know his true identity and he didn't want to be tied to the type of business he was doing in Central City.
"You better have a fucking good reason calling me back to Central City." Edward said as he poured whisky in a cup and turned and looked at Aro Voltaire, his right hand man.
"Sir, we have issues. The shooting in Starling City, the Hood took out our biggest runner."
"Harbor had no reason being there. He should have been doing his fucking job and that is pushing the Vertigo in the Glades like discussed!" Edward roared and threw the whisky glass when it was empty and it shattered against the wall. He didn't dare disclose that he was at that very restaurant at the time. Aro, even though his right hand, only knew him as Kael.
Aro nodded his agreement. "I agree with you. I've talked to the Count. He's manufacturing more of the Vertigo. He's not happy with the Hood getting to all of our carriers. We don't know how he's getting his information."
Edward growled and walked towards the large glass window that overlooked Central city. "Find out. I don't care how, I want you to find out how the Hood is getting his intel."
"Very well sir." Aro said and then excused himself.
Edward looked at the city below. He would find out who the Hood was, one way or another. He went to his desk and sat down, pulling open a drawer and finding a syringe and something in a vial. He rolled up his sleeve and used the rubber tourniquet to wrap around his bicep before he injected himself with something purple. He released the tourniquet and sighed as the drug flooded his body. He only used the doses in small increments.
Tommy was in recovery finally and was doing great. Ren was back in her room but there was still no response. The surgery went good and she had the new kidney and so far it was working to filter the urine and her output wasn't like it was before. It was better, so that was a good sign.
Bella swiped the tears from her eyes as she sat next to Ren, holding her hand, just praying that she would wake up soon. It had been hours since the transplant and she was hoping that somehow the new kidney would spur Ren to wake up, but she was still intubated having machines breathe for her. Suddenly the machines started beeping a lot and nurses and doctors flooded into the room and she was being shoved out into the hallway, tears raining down her face as she watched through the window as they flattened the bed and 'code blue' was announced over the intercom followed by Ren's room number. Bella sobbed, her body shaking as she watched the doctors start compressions on her little girl and pump her full of medications.
Oliver rushed down the hall as soon as he heard them announce code blue over the intercom. He found Bella sobbing in the hallway as the team of doctors and nurses worked on Ren. "Bella!"
"Oliver!" Bella sobbed out and she flung herself into his arms. His arms wrapped around her securely tucking her face against his chest so she couldn't see the doctors and nurses work on Ren. He watched, tears coming to his own eyes as he watched. His heart was beating hard in his chest and he prayed for the first time in six years that everything would be okay and that Ren would be okay.
After what felt like eternity, a doctor came out of the room and Bella pulled out of Oliver's embrace, but he still had his hands on her shoulders as they faced the doctor.
"Is she…."Bella croaked out.
"We got her heart started again Ms Cullen. But… you should prepare for the worse. She had a stroke. An embolism in her lung caused her to stroke and so we are bringing her down for scans to look at her brain." The doctor explained delicately.
"I don't understand. The surgery went okay. Why is this happening?" Bella sobbed out.
The doctor swallowed before he answered. "Sometimes, this happens. It rarely occurs, but it's from a blood clot that broke off in her lung and went to her brain that caused the stroke. It's part of what we discussed before the transplant. What the negative aspects of transplants are. This happens in less than one percent of patients. I am very sorry that Renesme had to be in that percentage. Right now, she's stable, so that's good." He explained and then the nurses were wheeling Renesme out of the room and pushing her down the hallway.
Bella nearly collasped, but Oliver held on to her. "Oh god. My baby." She sobbed out.
"We'll be back." The doctor reassured and then left to go follow Renesme to imaging.
Bella turned into Oliver and just sobbed against his chest. She could barely breathe and she felt like her entire world was just crashing around her.
Jasper stepped off the elevator and was walking to Renesme's room carrying Ren's favorite white lilies when he saw Oliver holding on to Bella and she was sobbing so hard. "Oh god. No." He said his voice cracking. He saw an empty room. "What happened?"
Oliver kept running his hand over Bella's head, trying to calm her, but his blue eyes focused on Jasper. "They took her for imaging. She had a stroke they're checking for a brain bleed." He explained.
Jasper dropped the lillies in the floor and both of his hand ran through his hair, tears already spilling over. "Oh god." He said, his chest heaving a little. He backed against the wall in the hallway before sliding down to a sitting position in the floor and he wept. He had tried so hard to not cry like this, but he couldn't hold it back.
Bella pulled away from Oliver and she stumbled over to Jasper, sinking to the floor and she reached for Jasper and pulled him against her and they both sobbed together in the floor of the hospital hallway.
Oliver had to run his hands over his own face to force his own tears away. He wanted to hit something, he felt so angry and useless and he didn't know what to do.
Everyone gathered in the conference room at the hospital. Edward was on his way back from Central City on the train, but Bella didn't care. Oliver stood in the corner of the room, giving the Cullen's space to be there as a family.
The doctor, Doctor Harrison Collier, seemed grim as he looked at the many faces of Renesme's family, but seeing Bella's pale, worn face, was worse. Carlisle was grim looking as well, as the grandfather of the small Ren and he was also a doctor so he understood probably more than anyone, what was going on.
"Renesme had what we call a Ischemic stroke. A clot from an embolus in her lung separated and went to her brain and caused the stroke. There is now bleeding in her brain from the damage from the stroke. Her heart stopped for fifteen minutes, but we were able to resuscitate her. The bleed in her brain is called Intracerebral haemorrhage or ICH. The scans show that it is repairable, and we need a signature to bring her back for our top neurosurgeon to go ahead with the procedure. But I have to tell you the risks."
Carlisle swallowed. "Iatrogenic damage to the healthy part of her brain." He said and nodded. "Or death."
Dr. Collier nodded. He was older than Carlisle by a little bit, hit dark hair was greying and his beard had the same peppering as his hair. That seemed to make Dr. Collier seem sadder somehow.
Rosalie wiped her face and sniffed. "Um, what if she doesn't have the surgery?"
"She can stroke again or potential seizures." Carlisle answered and stood. He shook his head. "She isn't responding to the medications?"
Dr. Collier shook his head. "I'm sorry. But there's more. We have to talk about the damage to her heart."
"Oh god." Bella pushed her hands over her face. "I can't. I can't do this." She stood and went for the door and opened it and went out to the hall.
Oliver silently went after her, closing the door behind him. He went to her and put his hands on her shoulders and turned her to face him. "Bella…"
"It's my fault. I did this to her. She didn't want to go to that dinner. She didn't want this. She didn't want to meet Edward. She was scared of him." Bella said, her lip quivering. "God, I killed my daughter."
"Don't talk like that. Ren can still pull out of this."
"How!" Bella said, pushing away from Oliver. "She's half brain dead!"
"That's not what he said." Oliver said.
Bella shook her head and wiped at her face. "The other doctor said to prepare for the worse. My eleven year old daughter is just… so fragile and laying there. I can't sit here and discuss anymore. I need to be by her side."
Carlisle came out into the hallway. "Bella."
"Carlisle, sign the paper. I can't. I can't… god… I can't." Bella said, her lip quivering a little more.
Carlisle nodded. "They're going to prep her for surgery. Dr. Caius Aragon is the best Neurosurgeon in the world Bella. I know that this is all scary. Trust me to make the right decisions for her. You did good giving me medical power of attorney. I will make sure every treatment is exactly what she needs."
"Dad." Bella sobbed and Carlisle hugged her with his one good arm. "She's my baby…"
"I know." Carlisle said his voice tight with emotion. "I know baby girl." He said and kissed the top of her head. "Esme and I… we're going to stay here and wait for her to be prepped. Go home. Shower, come back."
"I can't leave. What if something happens? I can't be away. I have to stay." Bella said, a little panicked.
"I'll have Diggle bring some clothes." Oliver suggested. "Fresh clothes, that'll make you feel better."
Bella nodded, agreeing to that and fished her keys from her pocket and handed them to Oliver. "Thank you." She said and Oliver nodded and took the keys and texted Diggle to meet him in the hospital lobby. He went towards the elevator and when it opened he saw Edward step off. Oliver saw the high look in his eye and he frowned, but Edward pushed past him and went down the hall towards Ren's room.
Oliver's jaw clenched a little, but he got on the elevator and rode it down to the lobby.
"You look tired." Diggle commented as he looked at Oliver walk into the lair. Four days passed since Ren had her surgery and she was stable right now, but still no change. The damage to her heart was the main concern right now, and that was just another hurdle to overcome.
"I haven't slept." Oliver admitted and looked at the renovations that Felicity and Diggle had done to the lair. It was looking more like the lair of the Hood than some stockroom basement to a club. "Anything else on the Vertigo front? Harbor was the top runner for the Vertigo in Starling City. Did we figure out where the Vertigo is coming from?"
Felicity spun in her chair to face Oliver. She was worried about him. He was burning the candle at both ends with spending all this free time at the hospital with Bella and then going out and being the Hood at night. "I have nothing. The interrogation with Harbor didn't give up anything and he was found hung in his jail cell yesterday morning."
Oliver hit the wooden wingchun dummy anger flaring through him. "I need answers." He was frustrated and tired and he felt so useless right now. "I'm going to shower." He grumbled and he left to go shower hoping that would make him feel somewhat human.
Diggle looked at Felicity. "I'm worried about him. There has to be something."
"A miracle." Felicity said and looked back at her screens.
"You're leaving again?" Bella asked Edward, angry that he was doing this. She didn't want him here, but he was just in and out.
"My job is in Central City." Edward said. "Don't raise your voice at me." He growled out through clenched teeth.
"Or you'll do what? Hit me?" Bella said snidely. "Fuck you. Go. Go to fucking Central City, I don't give a fuck anymore. You can beat me over and over again, but it doesn't fucking matter anymore. Everything I love is lying in that hospital bed. So go ahead, do your fucking worse." She challenged him.
Edward narrowed his eyes. "Mind your tongue. We're in public."
"Oh? Are we now? That's right, Saint fucking Edward won't dare raise a hand to his wife in public." Bella yelled at him and that drew attention. Oliver had come off the elevator and heard Bella's voice down the hall and was right behind Jasper and Carlisle rushing down the hall, just in time to see Bella haul off and punch Edward, knocking him onto the ground and she punched him in the face a few times, before Oliver's arms came around her from behind and pulled her off of Edward. "GET THE FUCK OUT! DON'T COME BACK!" She screeched at Edward. She had finally snapped.
Edward pushed himself to his feet. "You cunt, I am-"
"GET THE FUCK OUT!" Bella swung, fighting Oliver's arms and she kicked out at Edward.
"Go." Jasper said, his voice stern. "Or I will be the last person you see." Jasper growled. Edward narrowed his eyes before wiping the blood from his lip before leaving.
Oliver rocked Bella, swaying with her to calm her. Bella just sobbed as she tried to cover her face. Her knuckles were bloodied and she definitely broke a couple knuckles punching Edward in the face. "Hey, let's get you check out." He whispered in her ear.
Bella just nodded and Oliver carried her away because he legs weren't wanting to work. Once in an exam room, he looked at her knuckles when a nurse came in. She cast a look of sympathy towards Bella before looking at Oliver.
"I'll take care of her." The nurse's badge said Jessica. She was blonde and perky, and she smiled at Oliver.
Oliver smiled. "Thank you." He said and then he looked at Bella. "I'm going to check on Jasper."
"Okay." Bella said, her voice tired.
Oliver hesitated, but he left and went back to the hallway. He saw Jasper pacing a little. "Hey, the nurse is looking at her hands. He left?"
"Carlisle went to make sure he's banned." Jasper stopped pacing and looked in the window at his niece. "She's just barely hanging in there Oliver." He said and shook his head. "Edward… only made this worse."
Oliver stood next to Jasper and looked at Renesme laying in the hospital bed, the machines breathing for her. "I think the reason why Bella agreed to the reconciliation is because he threatened someone. I don't know who that someone is or if it was more than just one person, but she feared for someone's life and she decided that she would comply."
"I know. She would never compromise with him unless someone was in danger." Jasper said, his voice obviously still angry. "He's a coward."
Oliver could agree with that. "Ren is going to wake up."
"We don't know if she will. Dr. Collier said that the brain activity is waning. We're losing her Oliver." Jasper said, his voice strained.
Oliver didn't want to think like that. Ren was so young and had an entire life ahead of her. He didn't want to think about her life ending.
After a while, Bella returned, her hands wrapped. She came to a stop in front of Oliver and he looked down at her. "I… I love you." She said, her lip quivering.
Oliver sucked in a breath, stunned to hear those words come from her, but he just reached for her and pulled her into his arms. "Oh Bella… I love you so fucking much." He murmured and kissed the top of her head.
"He threatened to kill you. I…."Bella pulled away from him. "I couldn't… I couldn't let him hurt you."
Jasper looked around and then put a hand on Bella's shoulder. "Go find a room. Privacy," He said and Oliver agreed.
Oliver guided Bella to an empty room and he shut the door behind them and locked the door. "Bella…."
"I know that you're probably going to be upset with me. I had an abortion. I had Tommy take me to the clinic and… and I had it done. I know that… you would have taken responsibility. I love you for it, but I couldn't… I couldn't carry the baby. Edward's baby. It wasn't right and didn't feel right. I was scared and I just wanted to… I just needed to escape that hold he had on me." Bella said and cried a little. "I'm sorry."
Oliver pulled her into his arms and held her close. "Shhh. It's okay. I understand, I'm not upset. Bella I love you. There is nothing I wouldn't do for you in this world. If I could go back in time, I would fight harder for you. I knew something wasn't right. I was trying to give you space. I was… scared too." He admitted.
Bella leaned back and wiped at her face and looked up at him. "I missed you so fucking much. I need you so much." She breathed out.
Oliver leaned in and kissed her, their tongues tangling together. His hand tangled in her hair as her body pressed against his. There was a deep need for each other. Her hands moved to his pants and unfastened them before she was unbuttoning his shirt, her fingers working nimbly over the buttons. Oliver paused to pull her shirt off over her head and paused when he saw the bruising around her throat. "Bella…"
"Don't stop." Bella murmured and then took his mouth with hers again, pushing him against the back of the door and pulled the blinds closed completely so no one could see inside the room.
Oliver kissed her back, but he was worried about her and the marks on her throat that she had been covering with a turtleneck. He never suspected anything because it was cold outside. He paused as she sank to her knees and started to take his cock into her mouth. "Jesus." He blew out a breath and then forced her back to her feet. "I just want you." He murmured and kissed her, before turning with her and hoisted her against the door and slid his cock into her wet pussy. She moaned against his mouth as he thrust into her with ease. They linked together so perfectly and she was an idiot for thinking that she had to walk away from Oliver. Emotions flooded her as she felt herself climb towards an orgasm. Her nails raked over his back as she clenched around him. Endorphins flooded her body and she moaned against his mouth. Oliver moaned too, his cock filling so quickly as he plunged inside her. He thrust one more time, burying deep as he came inside her, her moans muffled by his mouth as he kissed her deeply.
They were quiet as they detangled from each other and pulled their clothes back on. Bella felt her heart race a little. She was so in love with Oliver that she didn't want this feeling to end, but knew the moment she had to open the door and step back out in the hall. The pain of everything going on with Ren would crash back down on her.
Oliver hugged her from behind and he kissed the top of her head. "Ren will be okay. We can't stop hoping."
"She's not getting any better." Bella said and leaned against him, her hand hesitating on the door handle.
"Just hope… have hope." He whispered before she opened the door and they left the room.
Jasper glanced up at them when they returned. He smiled a little. "Feel better?" He asked.
Bella blushed a little. "Maybe." She looked through the window at Ren and sighed. There had been no change.
Suddenly there were officers walking down the hall. "Isabella Cullen?" One officer asked as they approached.
Bella frowned. "Yes?"
"You're under arrest." The officer said.
"What? Why?"
"Assault." The other officer said. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say or do can be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney."
"I am an attorney." Bella said. "I know my rights." She said and let the officer cuff her.
Oliver and Jasper were instantly angry. "You can't do this."
"Back off or I'm hauling you in too Mr. Queen." The younger officer said and the escorted Bella out of the hospital.
Jasper grit his teeth. "He is unbelievable."
"I'll handle this. Stay with Ren." Oliver said and he dialed Laurel's number and she answered the first ring. "I know you just got Tommy home. But Bella was arrested. Can you meet me at Starling Police Station?" He asked and Laurel agreed and he hung up. He got on the elevator and called Felicity. "Felicity."
"What's up?"
"I need you to hack into the surveillance at the hospital. Can you make something disappear?"
"Was that even a question?"
Oliver smiled a little. "Of course."
Bella sat in the interrogation room at the police station. She had been counsel for many people that sat in this room before. She hadn't said a word to anyone. She knew what Edward was doing. He was trying to hurt her in any way he could. Her being here in the police station hurt her because she had to be away from Renesme.
The door opened and Laurel walked in and then her dad, Detective Larry Lance. "My client is innocent. These charges are bogus." She whirled and faced her father.
Larry sighed. "Edward Cullen is pressing charges against his wife, saying that she assaulted him. He's got a busted lip."
"He could have run into a wall or hit himself opening the car door." Laurel said. "He said, she said defense? Charges are bogus. If the roles were reversed, which they have been before, it took an act of god to get a protection order against him when Bella had plenty of proof, has plenty of proof that he has repeatedly assaulted her."
"A protection order that she recended." Larry reminded his daughter. "Now they're pulling tapes at the hospital to gather evidence and get witness statements."
Laurel narrowed her eyes and then she went to Bella and pulled down her turtleneck to reveal the dark bruising that Oliver told her about. "If your client really wants to press charges then we will file them right back and while we're at it, we'll demand he take a drug test since there are witnesses to him stumbling and seemingly under the influence."
Larry swallowed. He knew that Bella had experienced a host of abuse at the hands of Edward Cullen, but she had given up the protection order and she had attacked Edward publically. There was a knock on the door and he opened it and an uniformed officer handed Larry a folder. Larry opened it and frowned and looked at Bella and then back at the folder. "You're free to go." He mumbled.
Laurel raised a brow. "What? Edward's story didn't pan out? Maybe you shouldn't arrest someone based on hearsay. Don't bother." She put a hand up to stop her dad from talking. "This is shoddy police work and you know it. Her daughter is lying in a hospital bed fighting for her light. How dare you." Laurel's voice was like venom. "Come on Bella. Let's get you back to the hospital." She said and Bella stood and walked out of the room. Oliver was waiting for her and Bella went to him and his arms went around her instantly. He kissed her briefly before guiding her out of the police station and to his car that Diggle was driving. Laurel ducked in the front seat next to Diggle and everyone was silent a moment.
"What made him drop it?" Bella asked Laurel.
"No evidence." Oliver said.
"There are cameras at the hospital." Bella said, confused.
"Malfunction. The whole floor was out all day." Laurel said looking at Oliver, unsure how he managed to get the security footage erased.
Oliver nodded. "Also, sworn statements from hospital staff that said that they didn't see you hit Mr. Cullen."
Bella didn't understand, but she teared up and nodded. "Thank you." She said and looked at Laurel. "I'm sorry, you should be at home with Tommy."
"Tommy was ready to go fight Edward, so I'd say he is feeling better." Laurel said and smiled at her friend. Diggle drove Laurel to her apartment and dropped her off. She leaned in and kissed Bella's cheek. "I'll come visit with Ren tomorrow after court, okay?"
"Okay." Bella said with a nod and then watched Laurel walk towards her apartment.
[One Month Later]
Ren's condition wasn't improving. Ren was having mini seizures now and it was damaging her heart. She was on the transplant list for a new heart and as of right not she was at the top of the list because of her age and she was sicker than all the other patients. Since she still had brain function, she was considered savable.
Edward was banned from the hospital and Bella had filed for divorce again and this time, Edward didn't object. He had been visited by the Hood. Questioned about his involvement with Vertigo since Felicity had pinned together some coincidences with Vertigo entering Starling from Central City at the same time as Edward. So Edward, despite his hatred for Oliver Queen and Bella at the moment, resigned and signed the divorce papers and it was finalized three weeks ago. Bella was free from Edward and Edward had returned to Central City. His involvement at the hospital was an act, he didn't really care for Renesme, that was part of being a psychopath.
Oliver spent a lot of time at the hospital with Bella and with Ren. He didn't like leaving Bella's side for anything, but there was still the Vertigo issue coming into the city and on top of that, there was more going on in Starling than just Vertigo. He was suspicious of his mother and when Walter disappeared, his family was in upheaval about it. He was being pulled in many directions and he was worn out, but he kept staying strong.
Tommy was pulling more of the weight at Verdant and he happily did it because Oliver was really busy. He had reconciled his own feelings he had about Bella and Oliver. A silly overwhelming feeling for Bella, but it was past and he never spoke a word about these feelings because he did love Laurel, he knew that and there was no need to start anything.
Bella sat next to Ren's bed, her hand always holding Ren's. Her hand was cold so she tried to rub circulation into it to make sure that she could feel Bella holding her hand. The door opened and Oliver was there, bringing Bella some coffee. He handed it to her and then leaned over and kissed Ren's hair and stroked her hair gently. He then kissed Bella softly. "I love you." He whispered against her lips.
"I love you too." Bella murmured and then lifted the coffee to her lips. The news was playing on the TV quietly. Talking about a particle accelerator in Central City, and more on the ongoing Vertigo issue, but Bella tuned it all out. "How is your mom?" She asked as Oliver sat in the chair next to Bella.
Oliver sighed. "Upset about Walter being missing. Honestly I don't know what to think. Walter is a great guy. I hope that it's just a misunderstanding or something and he turns up soon." He said and looked at the monitors that surrounded Ren. "When are they doing the new scans?"
"This evening." Bella said and sipped her hot coffee again. "Um, my leave is running out at the firm. So, I'm probably going to have to take on some cases and work some because everyone is swamped. Laurel has been holding out as long as she can, but Ross said that I can't have anymore time."
Oliver frowned. "Bella, you don't have to worry about money, I told you I-"
"I need this job Oliver. I love being a lawyer and the more I sit here… I keep thinking about what Ren would want me to be doing right now. She loved that I am a lawyer. She said I was a superhero. I helped people that needed help. I mean sometimes I had to represent some bad guys, but most of the people I represent are good citizens just caught up in the bad system that is the Glades." She shook her head. "I need to be able to keep doing my work." Bella said and wiped the tear that escaped and trailed down her cheek.
Oliver understood that. "Okay. Well, in the very least… let me stay with Ren tonight and you go home and shower. Actually eat something that isn't hospital food."
"Ollie…"
"I won't leave her side for a second. There's time before her scans." Oliver coaxed.
Bella sighed and nodded. "Okay. You're right. I'm going to go home and shower and grab Jade Dragon and bring it back here. You're sure?"
"Bella, she's my little girl too." Oliver murmured and leaned in and kissed her. "I will never leave her side. I'm positive."
Bella bit her lip a little and nodded. "Okay." She said and squeezed Ren's hand. "Honey, mommy's going to go take a shower and get some food. I'll be right back, but Ollie is here. He's not going anywhere." She said softly and then leaned in and kissed the top of Ren's head before leaving the room, wiping away her tears as they fell. She hated being away from Ren for even a second sometimes. How was she expected to work? But she put on a brave face and she left the hospital to go home.
Oliver shifted to the other chair and he reached over and grabbed Ren's hand. "Once upon a time, there was a beautiful girl, who had hair as bright and golden. Her hair was the most beautiful thing in all the land and because of this beauty and the fear of those that would come to covet her hair, her mother, a witch, locked her away in the tower. This made the girl lonely and sad. One day, a prince, who was young and handsome and quite charming, discovered the tower in the woods. He thought it was strange that the tower was there all by itself and so he went to study it his curiousity propelling him forward to see what this tower could be. He heard a song, so lovely, and it was the most beautiful voice he ever heard and he called up to the window at the highest part of the tower. 'Such a lovely voice… does thou have a name?' The singing stopped and a girl appeared, her shimmering golden hair glinted in the sun as she came into view. 'Pardon?' she said, her voice light, breezy. Her large eyes were shocked to see another person. It felt like an eternity since her witch of a mother locked her in the tower. 'Your name fair lady.' The Prince called back up to her. 'Rapunzel.' She replied." He dropped off when he saw the door open and Carlisle walked in. "Oh, Dr. Cullen. Bella left to take a shower."
Carlisle nodded. "Call me Carlisle Oliver, you're dating my… daughter."
"Carlisle." Oliver nodded. He knew that Carlisle considered Bella like his own daughter and Bella felt the same way. Losing Charlie made her closer to Carlisle in many ways, filling that void that only a father could fill.
"I saw that she left. I stopped by to check on you." Carlisle said.
Oliver blew out a breath and looked at Ren and then back at Carlisle. "I'm okay. I know I have been in and out here for the last few weeks I-"
"You're busy. Rosalie and Emmett had the rest of their stuff flown in. They're staying in Starling permanently and Alice halted her travels with Jasper so they're here to stay as well." Carlisle said and slid his hands in his pockets. "I spoke to Dr. Collier. They're doing scans today, but it's not looking good. There hasn't been any brain activity in a week." He said. "They want to run more tests to confirm, but tomorrow morning, Dr. Collier is declaring Renesme braindead." The last part was strained, emotion obvious in his voice. "Bella…. isn't going to take this well."
Oliver stood, running his hands through his hair. "There's nothing else that can be done?"
"Dr. Aragon, the neurosurgeon that has done all of her procedures says that he can insert a device that can send stimulating pulses to her brain to try and… wake it. But… it hasn't been tested before. It's completely experimental." Carlisle explained.
"Risks?"
"Instant death." Carlisle said. "I… don't think it's going to change her outcome Oliver. I…"his voice broke. "My granddaughter… has fought as hard as she could and now… we… we need to face reality."
Oliver shook his head. "She's only eleven Carlisle….this can't be it for her." He felt himself get emotional, tears threatening to spill over.
"I know son." Carlisle said, his voice tight. "They'll do the scans this evening…but prepare Bella. Be there because this is going to devastate her."
Bella felt a little sick to her stomach as she got ready for her shower. She had been feeling a little queasy most of the day and the thought of pregnancy ran through her head. She pushed on her boobs and felt the slight discomfort there and she frowned. She went for the cabinet under the sink and she grabbed at the pregnancy test box. She had taken one of the test after the abortion to make sure that the hormones were leaving her body. It was just something she read online and wanted to be sure. And when the test had been negative she felt a little better. But there were two more tests in the box. She took one of the test out and she opened it and went to the toilet immediately. She didn't realize she needed to pee and so she peed on the stick and replaced the cap and set it on the edge of the tub. She felt her heart start racing a little as she thought about being pregnant again. This time it was feeling different.
She washed her hands and looked at herself in the mirror. There were circles under her eyes from her lack of sleep and her hair was dull from using too much dry shampoo. She blew out a breath and then retrieved the test and she looked at it.
Pregnant 4 weeks
Bella didn't know why she felt the surge of happiness fill her, but it did. She set the test down on the counter and then combed her fingers through her hair before she nodded to herself before getting naked to get into the shower. She didn't spend a lot of time in the shower, just long enough to wash over her body and her hair. When she got out she dressed quickly, pulling on her thick sweater and warm pants and then pulled her hair back into a ponytail before she grabbed the pregnancy test and shoved it into her pocket. She grabbed her wallet, keys, phone and her heavy coat and bundled up. Christmas wasn't that far off. Christmas was always Ren's favorite time of year. Bella looked at her phone at the date. Her period was late too, and she just realized it. With everything going on she hadn't paid attention. Christmas was in a week. She hadn't shopped for anyone or for Ren. She needed to get something for Ren. So she would have something to open for Christmas. She wrapped her scarf around her and but on her boots before she went outside and out to the car waiting for her on the curb. It was Diggle. He had waited for her that entire time. She got in the car and smiled at Diggle. "You know you could have come inside and waited. It's warmer in the house."
Diggle smiled at Bella in the mirror. "It's okay. I was doing my crosswords anyways." He said. "Jade Dragon?" He asked.
"Uh, no actually. I just want to get back to the hospital. I can eat one of the chicken sandwiches there." Bella explained. She didn't really trust her stomach with chinese at the moment since she was feeling a little queasy.
Diggle just nodded and drove her back to Starling General Hospital.
Bella walked into Ren's room and Oliver was just sitting there, his hand cupped over Ren's. He looked up at Bella when she walked in. She shrugged off her jacket and scarf and hung it on the back of the door. "How is she?"
"She's resting." Oliver said and looked at Bella, how she looked a little better, taking a shower and changing her clothes. "Did you get food?"
"Oh, I just wanted to get back. I wasn't that hungry. I figured it's chicken sandwich day anyways and I really like the chicken sandwiches. But Ollie, I have something to show you." She said, her heart racing a little. She was nervous about what he was going to say. She pulled the test out of her pocket and she handed it to him.
Oliver took the test in his hand and he looked at it.
Pregnant 4 weeks
He put a hand over his mouth and ran it over his face, tears coming to his eyes before he looked at her, his blue eyes showing a mixture of emotions right now. He stood. "You're pregnant?" He said, his voice tight with emotion right now.
Bella nodded. "I wasn't feeling well and my boobs hurt and I just… I took the test and…." She trailed off, tears coming to her own eyes. "This is good right? Ren will… she wants a brother or sister and… and this is right. This feels right Ollie."
Oliver moved to her. He set the test on the bed next to Ren and he framed Bella's face and he kissed her, tears running down his face. He was happy that Bella was pregnant, but then worried about her even more because of what was about to happen. That Bella's world was about to crash around her and he couldn't stop it.
Bella pulled back and then sniffed a little, wiping her face before she carefully sat on the bed with Ren. She grabbed Ren's hand in hers and she looked down at her daughter's beautiful face. She saw the hallowed look. The dark circles under Ren's eyes. The rise and fall of Ren's chest because of the machine breathing for her. For the first time since Ren had been hospitalized, she didn't see her daughter anymore. She saw who her daughter had been. But Ren wasn't here, and she felt it. She felt it as if a part of her had left her. Like a piece of her soul had been plucked from her. She didn't feel Ren with her anymore and that created a deepening saddness inside her. "Ren…" Bella said, choked up. "Mommy's pregnant." She said and tears ran down her face. "It was your dream to be a big sister and now… and now you are. Ollie… is happy and I am happy and I'm sure that Geema and Grandpa are going to be ecstatic as well when we tell them." She nodded and then she reached a hand up and smoothed Ren's hair out of her face. "It's okay honey. It's okay to let go."
Oliver felt his chest heave a little as a small sob escaped him and he clamped a hand over his mouth, his eyes red with tears. He didn't know that's what Bella was going to say to Ren. Didn't know what Bella was going to say, but the whole situation was sad and his heart hurt so much.
"My last words to you were… I love you. And I know that you were upset with me before everything happened. I am to blame… I know I am the reason you are here. Edward… wasn't a nice man and I know that I made a mistake… I should have not taken it on by myself and should have told Uncle Jasper what was happening, but I was afraid. It's no excuse and if I could take it back I would. Just so you could open your eyes and look at me. Your beautiful eyes." She whispered and stroked her daughter's face. "But it's okay." Bella nodded. "You've fought for so long and hard. But it's okay. I'm going to be okay. Because… because I know you're with me always." Her voice shuttered a little. "I will not fall into depression, I will not give up on life, because I am carrying your wish and dreams inside me right now. I will be strong, for them and I will be strong for you because that is what mommy's do." She said, tears rolling down her face as she spoke. "So it's okay, if it's your time to go." She whispered. "Don't hold on for me. I promise you… I promise you baby girl, that everything is going to be okay." She said and then she kissed her daughter's forehead.
The monitors started going crazy around them, but Bella was calm as she leaned back. Her dark eyes were red with tears as she stood to move out of the way of the nurses and doctors. She felt Oliver's hands pull her away towards the hallway, as the doctors and nurses shouted numbers and names of drugs and tried to keep Ren alive even though Bella knew that Ren was gone.
Carlisle ran down the hall, hearing the call for the code blue over the intercom and Jasper was right behind him. There was so much noise around Bella right now, but her dark eyes stayed glued to her daughter's beautiful face. Oliver's arms were around her and she knew that he was crying as was Jasper who pressed against the window, tears rolling down his face as he called out Ren's name. Carlisle had his arms crossed, tense as he stared on with red puffy eyes as he watched the other doctors try and resuscitate his granddaughter.
Bella stayed as she was, watching through her tears. "I love you Ren." She whispered and then the doctors looked at the monitors, backing off the table after thirty minutes of trying.
Time of death. 5:17pm.
