Final Resistance
Chapter 8: Diana and Bernice at the Celebration
Disclaimer: I don't own the Voltron Force or its characters—they belong to World Events Productions. The good news is that Diana, Ethel, Bernice, Deborah, Alex, Lawrence, and Cheryl are all my original characters. Have fun!
Two days later, Diana was happy to see everyone together again in the open yard. The last couple of days, Alex went through her "Rehab" session and was now released from her punishment for not answering any of Wade's questions. Diana offered to help support her to make it to the bleachers similarly to how Alex offered her support days ago. Alex chuckled and said it'll take more than a couple of days of food deprivation to make her that weak and it's only her first time. Alex chose to sit in the first row of bleachers. Diana sat next to her back to back, while Cheryl, Bernice, and Ethel sat directly above them.
"Diana…has anyone ever told you that you feel so soft and comfy?" Alex asked once she was comfortable. The group laughed.
"I hear it every time I go on a road trip. Heads and arms just keep finding their way to my body," Diana replied.
"Unless it's Lance…then its every body part imaginable," Cheryl said.
"That was only one time! We were alone in the back seats, Pidge was asleep and you were driving on the dark country road."
"Whoa…I need details!" Bernice and Ethel stated as Alex chuckled from her spot.
"I know we're up for stories and all…but that's a story for another day," Diana replied, with a slight blush. "It wasn't like we were exactly making out." Cheryl and Alex busted out in laughter.
"I can't believe you're saying that with a relatively straight face," Cheryl said.
"Anyway…let's focus back on our experiences with the Galaxy Celebration. Bernice, would you be ok to start sharing our experience?"
"Sure. Feel free to add in your experience at any time, Diana. Since I was a visiting head of state, I was given access to the VIP area by the stage and had a great view of the Lions and the pilots. Before the ceremony started, several leaders approached me when I entered the VIP section. Outside of Deborah, I didn't see anybody I knew, so I decided to find a spot in the section and started to have some fun in the crowd. A few minutes later, I saw Diana as she entered the section and beckoned her to hang out with us. It took a few moments, but Diana was finally able to break away from the other people in the section. After a quick curtsy and hug, we enjoyed the beginning of the celebration."
***Five years ago, VIP section at the Galaxy Celebration***
"I'm finally free to enjoy some of the celebrations!" Diana said with a large smile to Bernice and Deborah. "I'm sorry it took me so long to get here. Even being a diplomat's daughter, I get pulled to conversations I can't help with. But at least I can wear casual clothes today! This heatwave is something else." Diana was happy that she was able to wear her favorite short, purple romper set with matching purple wedge sandals. She was also wearing a pair of purple sunglasses. Diana handed a bottle of water to both Bernice and Deborah.
"I know. It almost feels like early spring in Cetrac," Deborah replied. "Luckily we packed some light clothes." Deborah decided to wear a light blue sleeves shirt and capri set with blue sandals she just bought yesterday at the small boutique a few blocks away from the park. Bernice was wearing a sleeveless, yellow maxi dress with yellow wedge sandals. "By the way, thank you for the water!"
"Yes, thanks for the water. I'm glad you made it here with us. Are you staying here the whole time?" Deborah as Diana before taking a sip of water.
Diana shook her head before responding. "I wish. Eventually, I'll have to return backstage and help my mom with her presentation. Which also means I'll be ducking and dodging a certain Sky Marshal. He still wants an answer to his job offer although I've been throwing subtle hints that I'm not interested. I've been struggling on how to decline the offer diplomatically. I love my current job and working with the veterans."
"What does he want you to do?"
"He wants me to take on a high level intelligence position under his command. I have a strong behavioral science background—including psychology, behavioral health, and social work. In addition to being a Senior Case Manager working with veterans, I'm also in the Alliance Reserve specializing in Intelligence. I like the work life balance I have right now. If I work under Wade, it'll also keep me from taking on my full courseload for my Dual Masters for Social Work and Public Health."
"I see. So if you work under the Sky Marshal, you'll have to serve the Alliance full-time and break up your treasured balance. Even if the position is highly desired," Bernice summarized.
"Yes. I also have other personal reasons for not wanting to work under Marshal Wade," Diana added on, lowering her voice so that only Deborah and Bernice could hear her. "Let's just leave it at that." Just then, Solstic introduced the Honor Guard and all conversation stopped in the VIP Section as everyone revered the anthems and flags. When the Honor Guard and Band were finished, the crowd was alive with applause and cheers as the Voltron Force performed the fly-over over the park. Solstic introduced Arstic. As Arstic was singing their first song, Diana and Bernice started dancing along with the beat.
"Wow! This is one talented group. We got to see if we could book a concert with them in Cetrac." Bernice said as they finished the song.
"I agree. They'll be a big hit in Cetrac," Deborah added as she typed in a note into her phone. Her phone's notepad was filled with a whole week's worth of notes and things to try back home. Deborah took a few sips of her water as Arstic continued their performance sets.
"I'll have to get my hands on their albums. I think I might have a new favorite group!" Diana shared during the break between Arstic and GroupoStyless. After being introduced, the band started playing their sets. Diana looked down at her watch and frowned before listening to the band again. After a couple of songs, Diana stood up from her chair next to Bernice. "I have to go backstage. Marshal Wade is about to start his presentation and go on and on. I also need to confirm some last minute things with my mom before our presentation. With any luck, I can continue to avoid Marshal Wade and I'll be back and get to listen to some more music before Voltron finishes up the night."
"Good Luck!" Bernice and Deborah called out from their seats. They watched as Diana walked through the section and waved at some of the dignitaries. She turned around and flashed a thumbs up at them before leaving the section's gate. "Well, that was interesting. I'm sensing a deep dislike for that man." Bernice shared with Deborah.
"It appears so," Deborah replied. "Also, have you noticed that some of the soldiers here are heavily armed?"
"I saw. Maybe it's somewhat common to have armed guards for big events like this. But I'm also picking up some bad vibes. I hope I'm wrong." Bernice replied and Deborah nodded in agreement. The music ended and Wade stood out on the stage. He introduced himself and gave a brief summary of his background, starting with his academy life. Wade shared some of his famous classmates—including Coran and Diana's father. He also mentioned a few other things before continuing. "The Academy taught me everything I know as a leader and as a responsible adult. The Academy is always looking for new leaders despite age or background. If you want to be a better person, there is no better place than the Academy." Wade continued his speech. "As a former instructor and as the highest-ranking military officer, I will constantly review how the Academy is run and adjust as needed. We also hope to have more students from other, distant planets that haven't attended yet. For example, Cetrac." Wade said, pausing to look at Bernice before continuing his last thoughts about the Academy's future.
"I bet you would want some of my young subjects. Probably based on our previous reputation," Bernice said under her breath.
"Princess?" Deborah asked, afraid she missed something important.
"It's nothing. No consequence," Bernice replied as she continued to listen to Wade's speech.
"My main focus as Sky Marshal is to make the Alliance effective and establish a more central force in the future. There are some planets where we do not have bases and it would be a tactical advantage to have. Most of the planets we need a base on are on the remote edges of the universe." Wade paused to look at Bernice and Deborah, before continuing again.
"Is it just me or is he actively targeting us for these new ideas?" Deborah replied as she looked down to type in notes on her phone. "It's not like we didn't ask for help or for a base to be built. Heck, even your parents made a few attempts."
"Tell me about it. Maybe we'll get a chance after his speech to ask the Sky Marshal about it." Bernice added, as the speech continued. "I'm starting to pick up back vibes around him. I'm also starting to see why Diana dislike him."
Wade continued to speak about his immediate and long-term plans for the universe through the Alliance before taking a quick moment to drink a glass of water. The crowd was quiet and full of whispers as Wade continued his oral manifesto. A few minutes later Wade discussed the Voltron Force. "I'm nearly done here people, and everyone can continue to enjoy the festivities" The crowd interrupted Wade with cheers for a few moments before quieting down again. "One of my favorite animals is the lion. In fact, I have a pet lion that stays by my side almost everywhere I go. Although most lions are ferocious and hardly tamed, my lion is the opposite and a fierce protector. During my student days at the Academy, my life changed when we were visited by the Voltron Force of that day." The crowd cheered at the mention of Voltron. Wade's eyes slightly narrowed at the response. "Some interesting things about the Lions compared to real lions…"
"I knew he was going to talk about lions in some form or fashion." A voice in the VIP crowd said.
"He sure does love lions, doesn't he?" Someone else in the section remarked.
"Have you ever been to his personal office? It's truly functional military wise—but it's also full of lion mementos and such. Some people are obsessed with dogs, others cats—but this guy here is whole another level." Another remark hit their ears. The section was filled with several more comments about Wade and lions that nearly drowned out the end of Wade's speech. When the speech was finally over the people cheered. The next band, Clasiktopia was introduced, and the crowd cheered loudly.
Meanwhile, backstage during Wade's speech…
When Diana made it backstage, she noticed that Wade saw her. Luckily for Diana, Wade turned his head and made it to the edge of the stage so he could step in the limelight easier. After finding Wade, Diana was able to find her mother going through her presentation notes nervously in the middle of all the backstage action. Allura, Coran, Keith, and Lance were close by offering support as needed while taking in the rest of the scene before them. Diana walked up to her mother with ease. After hugging her mother and looking at the notes, Diana shared her thoughts. After agreeing to several points and confirming whether Diana's tone was what she was looking for, Hyacinth agreed to take a break during Wade's speech. When his speech was over, Diana sighed in relief to see him exiting the stage from the opposite side.
"I hope you're getting all of this," Hyacinth said. "You know what…I'm just going to over this with you again—and away from everybody else."
"But Mom…" Diana started but lost the attention battle as Hyacinth pulled Diana away from Allura, Keith, Lance, and Coran and closer to the stage entrance. "Ok, let's go over this again." Hyacinth started going over the points with Diana again. As she was going over the notes, Hyacinth noticed that Diana was dancing in between repeating her part of the presentation and looking around the stage. Finally, Hyacinth had enough and had to address the issue with Diana.
"I hope you're paying close attention to me, Diana. You handle an important speaking role within my presentation." Hyacinth told Diana. "I also hope that you're not ducking and dodging somebody because you refuse to give him an answer. Just tell him no and go freely about your business like you normally do."
"I would have done that suggestion, Mom, if it would work. Unfortunately, I know Wade. He's so determined to have me take orders from him. At least at the clinic, I have more control over my work-life balance," Diana responded. "I'm also paying strict attention to you. My parts will focus on working with the government but still follow your passions. Not hard to do since I'm living it." Diana finished, as she looked around the backstage area again.
"You're hopeless!" Hyacinth said, crossing her arms like Diana often does when she's frustrated. "And you're acting way too much like your father right now."
"Aww. I'm the perfect blend of the both of you," Diana countered with a smile. "I know when to be reckless and when to be diplomatic."
"Just don't embarrass me on the stage in a few minutes," Hyacinth said in resignation as Diana looked back to her mother with a smile.
"I promise I'm not going to embarrass you, Mother." Diana promised. "I'll make you proud as always." Diana could see Wade returning to their side of the backstage area. "In fact, I'm going to the restroom now, if anybody asks." Diana gave Hyacinth a quick, warm hug before walking towards the right to escape Wade's vision.
"And where do you think you're going, Beautiful?" Lance asked Diana as he grabbed her arm and pulled her towards him.
"I'm trying not to be seen by HIM," Diana replied gesturing her head towards Wade who found his way to Hyacinth and engaged into a conversation with her.
"Why? Are you scared of him or something? You know I'll protect you." Lance promised Diana, as he raised one of his eyebrows.
"I'm not scared of anyone. I'm just avoiding an unpleasant conversation on this beautiful day. Let me go, Lance. I have to make a lie a truth." Diana remarked.
"And that is?"
"I'm going to the bathroom. Happy now, Handsome?" Diana asked as she released her arm and headed towards the row of portal bathrooms. Diana entered the first unoccupied one she could find as Lance followed and stood guard by the door. Wade finished his conversation with Hyacinth and headed towards Lance and Diana.
"Diana, I hope it smells passable in there. Wade is on his way here." Lanced called out to her.
"Damn. Mom told him where I was." Diana groaned before staying quiet. She could practically hear Wade walking towards them.
Lance stood at attention and saluted Wade when he made it to the bathrooms. Wade returned the salute before speaking. "Lt. McClain, how are you enjoying the celebration so far?"
"It's better than I could hope for, sir," Lance responded. "I enjoyed your presentation, Sky Marshal Wade. I didn't know you had such a love for lions. The Academy certainly prepared me well for Arus but stepping into the Lions was a whole new world. In fact, if you would like, I would love to personally fly you in Red Lion."
"Interesting as it is, McClain, it'll have to happen at another time. Right now, I'm looking for Dr. Smythe-Williams' daughter. I was told she went to the restroom here? I need to talk to her ASAP about her future." Wade said, narrowing his eyes.
"The beautiful Diana?" Lance said with a smile and bright eyes.
"Yes. Have you seen her?"
"No sir. Maybe she changed her mind and decided to mingle in the crowd for a quick minute before her mother's presentation." Lance replied.
"Humph. I'll check the VIP section for now. I swear that brat is never where I need her to be this week. If you see her, let Diana know that I'm looking to speak with her."
"Yes, sir." Lance said as Wade walked away and towards the crowd. Lance turned and knocked on the door twice before Diana stepped out.
"Thanks, Lance." Diana said with a smile. "Your acting is lacking a little something though."
"I had to make it believable with under a minute of warning," Lance said shrugging his shoulders as Diana walked away from him. "And Diana?" He moved from the bathrooms and called out to her.
Diana stopped and turned around to face Lance. "Yes?"
"I'm the better actor between the two of us. I'll show it to you one day." Lance told her as she made to move towards her mother again. "Also, you're beautiful and you smell wonderful even after being stuck in that portable bathroom for minutes." Lance finished with a smile.
"You're an incorrigible rogue, Lance." Diana said before walking towards her mother close to the stage. She heard Lance calling out his thanks and Diana chuckled by her mother's side.
"What's got you so amused? You didn't do anything to the Marshal, did you?"
"Why, Mother, I'm shocked. Actually, it was my conversation with Lance just now." Diana replied. "He's an incorrigible rogue."
"And you're very attracted to him," Hyacinth said. "I think he's made a great impression on you. You got the biggest crush on him."
"Mom…we're just having a good time. Tomorrow, he'll leave for Arus, and I'll be on Earth. I can't see us having a relationship anytime soon." Diana said, trying to hide her sigh. "I'll be lying if I didn't admit that being with him has been quite fun, though."
"That's how your father and I started. We had a great time together, then before we knew it—we started a brief long-distance relationship. Who knew we would actually get married and share a wonderful daughter that's the perfect blend of the both of us?" Hyacinth asked her daughter. Diana didn't respond but moved quickly to volley a speeding beachball heading close to her mother. As l luck would have it, the ball made its way to the VIP section, and it landed on Wade as he was talking to someone. Diana managed to turn to check on Hyacinth as Wade turned around to see if he could figure out who sent the ball his way. Lance ran to check on the ladies with Keith and Allura close behind him.
"Are you ok, Hyacinth?" Lance asked. "That beach ball was pretty fast." He glanced over the older woman, checking for any injuries.
"I'm fine, Lance," Hyacinth answered him with a smile. "Diana stepped in at the last moment to protect me."
Lance turned to face Diana. "Diana?" Lance asked as he took his time glazing over Diana. He loved how Diana's short romper fit her body perfectly. It hugged her shape and made the eye travel up and down her long legs. Not to mention how the top part seemed to mold itself around her chest and had cap sleeves that highlighted her tone arms. Diana noticed how Lance was taking his time checking her body for any injuries. She started to slightly blush at his attention.
"I'm fine—I was able to volley the ball into the VIP section," Diana finally answered him breathlessly as she enjoyed how Lance's piloting uniform gave her the perfect view of his muscular body. "I'm not quite sorry for who it ended up hitting." Lance laughed a little bit.
"Well, it looks like it's your turn to hit the stage," Lance said before taking Diana's hand and kissing it. "My Lady."
"I'm not yours…" Diana answered with a smile as she followed her mother on stage. Lance let his eyes follow Diana and Hyacinth as they finally graced the stage.
"Yet. Keyword, yet." Lance answered to himself.
"How the might has finally fallen," Keith said out loud, as he put his hand on Lance's shoulder.
"Who? What?" Lance said, taking Keith's hand off his shoulder.
"You got it bad for my best friend," Allura said with a smile. "She got you around her little finger."
"I disagree, I think I got her around my little finger." Lance said.
"Well, anyway, let's go meet Hunk and Pidge by the Lions," Keith said. Lance and Allura nodded their heads in agreement and left to meet the other pilots outside of the park.
Back to the VIP Section, Bernice and Deborah were finally having that conversation they wanted with Wade. They asked him about the beach ball that hit him and if he was ok.
"I'm fine." Wade said gruffly.
"Sky Marshal Wade, during your speech, you mentioned that you wanted to expand the Alliance over to remote worlds such as ours, right? Also, to start a program to help encourage some of younger citizens to attend the Academy?"
"Yes, I did. Arus taught us that even remote locations could be both strategic and diplomatic decisions. With the steady income from the Alliance flowing to different planets, the local economy sees a large and steady rise. Honestly, I would have thought that you would have requested a base by now. Your planet has a strong military background."
"Actually, Marshal Wade, we made several requests while my parents were still alive. I also made several requests after I took over planetary affairs." Bernice replied, slightly narrowing her eyes. "But it seems that our requests may be more receptive with you in charge."
Deborah took the time to lean over and whisper something into Bernice's ear before standing back up. "That's a wonderful idea, Deborah. Duchess Deborah mentioned in my ear that the requests were sent but perhaps they were lost once received. I'll send another request upon my return to Cetrac and send an updated bid for you. I'll have it delivered certified, that way we'll know that our request made it to your desk. If we don't hear from you, I'll personally follow up with you." Bernice said with a smile.
"That would be wonderful, Your Highness," Wade said with a smirk and a bow. "I'm looking forward to a new era where the Alliance moves on one accord with our member planets."
"Indeed, Marshal Wade," Bernice replied with a smile before turning back to the stage. "I believe that Hyacinth and her daughter about to speak next. Have you met the Arusian Ambassador and her daughter yet?"
"Why, yes, I have, Marshal. Dr. Smythe-Wiliams is amazing as her background confirms. Ms. Smythe-Williams is the perfect blend of spirit and intelligence. I also met your classmate, Advisor Coran."
"Yes, Coran is an old friend of mine," Wade replied. "By your leave, I should return to the backstage area to see if there's anything else I can help with tonight."
"By all means. It's been a pleasure, Marshal." Bernice said in a soft dismissal. Wade bowed before leaving the section. Bernice and Deborah shared a knowing look before listening to Hyacinth and Diana being introduced to the crowd. The crowd cheered loudly for the duo. Hyacinth shared about the Department of Interplanetary Relations and her background. Diana then shared a brief summary about her experience as a child of a diplomat and as a reserve member of the military. "And you would never thought she was so accomplished. No wonder Wade wants her to work with him so much. She's a natural with people and policy."
"I agree, Bernice." Deborah responded. "She's a natural leader. I wonder more about why she dislikes Wade so much."
"That's makes both of us," Bernice shared as Hyacinth continued her speech and mentioned what happened with Arus and Doom. They were amazed as Hyacinth gave the audience time to let her words sink in. Then Hyacinth lightened the mood by going over general life as a colleague at her department. Bernice shared with Deborah how amazed she was with Princess Allura and how she truly related to her. "We're definitely going to have a special Alliance with Arus, now. It'll be beneficial to both planets."
Diana took over the microphone and the presentation. "I know that everyone's ready to see the pride of Arus—Voltron! I promise I'm not going to hold you guys more than necessary." The crowd cheered in response. "I was blessed to have parents that came from two different planets and experienced the best of two cultures. The best thing I ever did was take on a couple of internships with DIR. While I was in college, I also took advantage of the Alliance's ROTC program on campus. Both experiences helped me get to where I am today. While I was an early graduate of high school, the best counselor in the world reminded me that I could work within the Alliance but still work primarily in the private sector. No matter what your passion is, there's a spot for you at the Galaxy Alliance's Department of Interplanetary Relations. The mission is always about diplomacy and people. And just to let you know, I'm not saying this as a diplomat's daughter or a colonel's daughter or even as a reservist with the military. I'm saying this as a fellow citizen—if you're interested in challenge, check out one of the tables scattered here and talk to a recruiter. You can even sleep on it for a few days and stop by one of the offices. Tell them I sent you. Hopefully, I'll be working with you in the future!" The crowd gave Diana a standing ovation as she handed the microphone back to Hyacinth as they shared a quick hug. Diana left the stage so Hyacinth could finish her presentation.
"Well…there's no way I can follow that," The crowd laughed and cheered. "I'm just going to conclude the presentation here. Whether you wish to follow a full-time career or work part-time, the paths to diplomacy run the same." Hyacinth went on to talk more about the diplomat life before repeating Diana's comments about the tables or visiting the offices. "If you want, the journey can even start tonight. Solstic…the crowd is all yours again." Hyacinth finished as the crowd cheered and applauded.
Solstic returned to the stage and took over the microphone. "Thank you, Dr. Smythe-Williams. All right folks, we're almost at the end of the celebration. We have one last musical act before we all get to see Voltron. I want to introduce you to the duo that needs no introduction! The Galaxy Alliance presents…Antber and Matgom!" The crowd went wild, and the VIP section was no different. The stage was full of smoke and pyrotechnics, hiding the duo from the crowd.
When the smoke and pyrotechnics cleared, Antber was dressed in a blue sequin leotard, blue thigh high boots, and blue streaks in her black hair with the microphone in her hand. "Are you ready to rock? Are you ready to roll? Are you ready for both?" She asked the crowd as the band moved into place behind her and Matgom. A few feet away, Matgom grabbed his guitar and prepared to play. He was wearing a red tank top and black cargo shorts with black boots. The crowd chanted yes several times before Matgom started playing an intense guitar riff. Before the crowd knew it, they began to sing their cover of Celebration. The crowd chanted Woohoo every time the chorus rolled around. During the ending refrain of the song, Diana re-entered the VIP section and returned to Bernice's side.
"I saw some of your moves out there, Deborah. You too, Princess," Diana said with a smile as they laughed along with her.
"That was an awesome speech! If I wasn't a planetary monarch, I would join tonight." Bernice complimented Diana. "Seriously. I might have to look for more loopholes."
"And wherever Bernice goes, my hubby and I go, too." Deborah added. "Too bad we have to run a planet." Diana laughed as the next song started. The instrumental intro had the crowd standing up and swaying to the beat. As the song started, the crowd sang along with Antber. As the song continued, Antber had tears in her eyes from the audience's reaction.
"Wow! Everybody's been great so far. I hope y'all are enjoying the performance so far. Our next song is about to be released soon, so we wanted to give everyone an advanced performance of it. Matgom created this song all by himself so, I'm going to let him take over. I hope that you'll love this song as much as we do." The crowd cheered as Matgom took over the microphone and placed it on the small stand on the piano. He played a quick interlude before he opened his mouth to sing. His smooth baritone voice came out and automatically entranced everyone. Couples started dancing as some of the unattached singles wistfully watched them. Diana, Bernice, and Deborah sat down and watched the couples enjoy the moment.
"I can't wait until it's my turn," Diana and Bernice said at the same time.
"Luckily, I have a permanent dance partner," Deborah said with a smile. "If he wasn't stuck on Cetrac, we would be enjoying a dance in front of you." Bernice and Diana stuck their tongues out at Deborah.
After a brief laugh, Deborah spoke again. "It probably won't be long before Diana joins the club. I heard that a certain Voltron Force pilot likes her."
"I heard the same rumor," Bernice said looking at Diana. "I think I saw you dancing with him several times the last two nights. Even more, your first and last dance last night was smoking hot!"
"It'll have to stay rumors," Diana responded. "We're just having a great time together. We're not going to have time for a committed relationship. He's leaving for Arus tomorrow and I'll be staying on Earth. I'll be busy with work, school, helping with Uncle Coran's transition, and my reservist duties. Lance will be so busy with Arus' rebuilding efforts, peacekeeping duties, and whatever else comes his way in Arus. I'm not even going to point out the long distance factor."
"Like there's no way we have intergalactic calling. And doesn't Lance pilot the fastest lion," Deborah pipped in. "I also heard that Lt. McClain is very interested in you and that he never takes his eyes away from you."
"Stop it!" Diana squeaked with a rising blush in her cheeks. "We're just new friends enjoying our time together. We'll keep in touch of course, but nothing past friendship. I'm not sure why everyone wants us to go past that."
"We'll drop the conversation—after I say this last piece. Deborah used to say the same thing about her husband and your denials are echoing hers right now."
"And you're still blushing!" Deborah added. Before Diana could respond, the song changed, and the tempo increased. The next song was a rock song and had the ladies back on their feet dancing and bobbing their heads to the beat. They enjoyed the song so much, they didn't notice the camera flashes that captured their joyful dancing. When the song ended, the crowd chanted "more" several times before the group returned back to the stage. For their encore performance, they performed their most famous song, "Change the Rules". As the starting strains of the songs filled the park, there was a growing soft glow of cellphones, watches, and even lighters around the park. The crowd waved their arms and sang along with Antber and Matgom. While the band picked up their instruments and left the stage, Antber and Matgom continued the song by tossing their guitars off-stage and singing the reprise a couple of more times.
Solstic returned to the stage and took the microphone from the duo before thanking them. "I know everybody has enjoyed themselves, right?" The answer to the question was a resounding cheer. "The moment you all have been waiting for is here! The Voltron Force! As you can hear, the Lions are circling above us. Once they land on the stage, they'll give out their brief speeches, followed by fireworks. It's been a pleasure hosting this wonderful Celebration. Have a great night, everybody!" The crowd cheered as they could now see the Lions as Solstic left the stage and the higher platform was installed as the final things removed from the stage to allow space for the Lions to land.
Once they found Red Lion, Bernice and Deborah giggled as they watched Diana focus on it more than the other lions. "And there's Diana's sweetheart in Red." Deborah whispered to Bernice. "I think they're already going down the path to lovers."
"I agree." The lions finished flying around the park and started to land on the stage. The ladies smiled as the lions lowered themselves slowly onto the stage. Yellow Lion landed first to the right, followed by Red, and Green Lion on the left. On the higher platform, Blue landed first, then finally Black Lion landed. "That's some great engineering work! See how the platform and the stage didn't move at all—even with how heavy the lions should be?"
"I know, awesome. We could definitely use that knowledge back at home." Deborah responded back to Bernice.
When the pilots left their lions, the crowd erupted. "Voltron! Voltron! Voltron! Let's go Voltron Force!" The pilots waved to the crowd and enjoyed the positive response. In the midst of waving to the crowd, Bernice and Deborah noticed that Lance stopped briefly to find Diana. With a smile, he winked and blew a kiss in Diana's direction.
"I believe that wink and kiss was for Diana," Bernice and Deborah smirked together as a small blush returned to Diana's cheeks from their light teasing.
"Y'all stop that! OMG!" Diana let out, trying to calm her blush down. "That could have been for any lady in this section."
"Yeah right. Like you don't notice him looking at you and our conversation," Bernice answered. "Just to let you know, I'm great at matchmaking. Deborah and her husband were my first vic—match. Right now, I have a good quarter of my court married or engaged. I'm a big romantic at heart."
"She's not lying. The amazing part is that you don't even notice when you're getting set-up. Bernice would made a killing in England's Regency era." They laughed together as Hunk grabbed the mic and started his speech. After his encouraging speech, Pidge shared his experience. When Pidge was done with his speech, Lance happily grabbed the microphone before speaking.
Lance took a few moments to appreciative glance at Diana. He winked and blew another kiss her way before speaking. "Hellooo, Canaveral!" Lance introduced himself. "Did you miss me?" Lance asked the crowd, who cheered and laughed at the same time. Several ladies in the VIP section catcalled him in response. "It's good to be back on Earth! I loved the adventures of being the ace pilot of Red Lion. When I wasn't fighting evil, I was winning hearts." Ethel rolled her eyes as George laughed and Lance continued. "But, let me share a quick story with you and hopefully I'll be able to inspire everyone. So, things were looking…" Lance shared how there were times when things looked bad for Arus and the team. Then, he shared how they were able to change things around. "Remember, it's not how you start, it's how you finish. Goodnight, Canaveral!" Lance finished to loud cheers before Keith and Allura started to speak as Lance blew a kiss towards the VIP section.
Every so often during Keith and Allura's speech, Diana and Lance would sneak in looks and winks towards each other. When Bernice and Deborah caught the silent exchanges, they would laugh and point out that those winks mean more than she would let on. Deborah even teased that if she didn't know any better, she'll think they were communicating using their own private language. Diana blushed as she denied that there were more to the winks. As the fireworks started to go off, Lance stopped waving to the crowd to give Diana another wink and kiss. Diana finally responded back in kind with a wink and blew a kiss to Lance. Bernice and Deborah took advantage of the timing and teased Diana again. "I never knew someone could blush so much."
"You two are having too much fun at my expense!" Diana responded with a smile. "I still stand on my assertion that we're just fast friends."
"Closer than fast friends," Deborah replied. "I'm not sure why you're even…swimming in denial." Diana blushed again before Bernice joined in.
"I still see more than that. We saw all those kisses and winks. I know what I know." Bernice said with a smile.
"Oh, whatever," Diana said as she turned back to admire Lance again in his flight uniform and leather jacket combination. Suddenly…everything changed, and chaos took over. The Lions started to attack the crowd, starting with an audible click. Diana frowned as Black, Blue, then finally Green, Yellow, and Red Lions randomly shot rays in different places. Diana saw that the Lions moved slightly and immediately moved to her left to push Bernice and Deborah out of harm's way. She used her body to cover them.
"Everyone ok?" Diana asked in quick gasps.
"We're fine, thanks to your quick reflexes. What just happened? There's no way we just got attacked by the Lions." Bernice asked as she and Deborah moved to stand by Diana again.
"I'm not sure what happened, but best believe that I'm going to find out all I can." Diana said. "I bet Wade has something to do with this—its like his hands are all over it." Bernice and Deborah looked at Diana in slight confusion. Before they could do anything else, they were surrounded by Alliance troops. Diana took a look around and noticed that their section was empty, and the sizeable crowd was rapidly being dispersed, guided by their guards, the Alliance soldiers from earlier.
"Your Highness, Your Grace. We've been assigned to ensure that you made it to your hotel suite safely."
"We're safe. No need for an escort." Bernice said, defensively. Deborah gently took Bernice's arm in comfort.
"Marshal Graham and Sky Marshal Wade insists. You'll also would want to touch base with your home planet." The ladies looked to Diana and waited for her response.
"It's fine, ladies. Go on with your escorts and we can follow-up later. I'll make it home safely."
Bernice and Deborah gave Diana a hug before preparing to leave with some of the soldiers. "Until later, Countess Diana." They said together, walking off. Diana watched as they left the celebration in a sizeable SUV. She then turned to check on the status of the Lions. The closest Alliance soldiers surrounded the Lions as the pilots struggled to get them back to normal. It took Keith a few moments to finally make it to Black's cockpit before the Lions calmed down. Even from the distance, Diana could see Lance's confusion about Red's behavior. She turned back to the soldiers that were still surrounding her.
"Ms. Smythe-Williams—"
"Just call me Diana. No need for formalities." Diana interrupted the sergeant. She could tell that she wasn't going to like whatever instructions they had to follow.
"We've been ordered to personally escort you to Headquarters. Sky Marshal Wade wants to meet you and your safety is one of his upmost concerns." Diana narrowed her eyes before crossing her arms. It didn't miss her attention that Wade conveniently left after she diplomatically declined his job offer in front of several witnesses backstage. "You need to meet him immediately." Diana turned towards the stage and noticed that Lance was watching their interaction, arms crossed. Although she only knew him a few days, she could feel he wasn't too pleased with whatever happened to the Lions or the fact that she was now surrounded by soldiers. He went to move towards her, but she shook her head no. Diana turned back to the soldiers and let out a long sigh.
"Fine. Let's not keep the Sky Marshal waiting." Diana answered as the group split with half of them walking in front of her and the other half walking behind her. The sergeant was walking alongside her. "Is there a reason why I have so many escorts? Or any idea what's going on? The Lions would never do this on their own."
"We have nothing, Diana." The sergeant replied. "Every machine and ship break down. Maybe this was the Lions turn for a break down."
"That's impossible. The Lions don't break down." Diana replied, crossing her arms again.
"Well anyway, that's above my paygrade. All I have to do is bring you to Sky Marshal Wade and keep going with the Army. I know nothing about ships and mechanics—that's why I'm not in the Space Explorers, ma'am."
Diana hmphed as they arrived at an SUV. The sergeant opened the door for her, and she stepped into the vehicle with ease. The sergeant closed the door and walked around the SUV to enter from the other side. Two of the soldiers got into the SUV behind them, with the other two settling into the driver's seat and front passenger seat. The SUV was turned on and started it's journey to Wade's office. "So, what did y'all do to earn babysitting duties?" Diana asked as she finally noticed his name tag.
"Ma'am?"
"Sergeant Jones, how did you get stuck babysitting me?" Diana asked. "Nobody volunteers to be an escort willingly."
"Actually, when the final plans were made for the celebration, my duty was to watch you from a distance for your safety. It's an honor to escort you to headquarters, Ma'am. Your father is my military inspiration and I'm about to start Office's school and rise up."
"That's sweet of you," Diana said before pausing for a moment. "My father is still my biggest hero. I never outgrew that."
"That's an amazing thing, ma'am."
Diana only replied with a smile and stayed silent for the rest of the trip to Alliance Headquarters. When they arrived at Wade's office tower, they were greeted by more soldiers. "Am I under custody? Why so many soldiers?"
"Just for your safety ma'am." Jones replied. Diana sighed again as they continued into the building. Once inside, Diana and Jones were left alone on the long elevator ride to Wade's office. Sergeant Jones tried to talk to Diana several times but was only met with silence.
Meanwhile back at Deborah and Bernice's hotel suite…
"Your Highness, my love. Are you ok? We all saw what happened at the celebration!" Devin asked, looking for any forms of distress from his wife and his monarch. He was surprised to find not a scratch on either lady.
"I'm fine," Deborah and Bernice replied at the same time as they settled down into the couch in front of the screen. "We have a couple of announcements to make. Send the announcement that we're fine—no injuries and will address the people in a couple of hours. I'll make the formal announcement of our support for Arus and Voltron Force. We'll have to reach out to our ambassador and make sure that they vote in favor of Voltron, no matter what happens. Anything else we should do right away, Deborah?"
"I'll send some confidential notes your way, love. As for the immediate time, you listed everything already Princess." Deborah replied.
"I'm sending out the announcement that the both of you are fine and will address the people in a couple of hours. I'll be looking forward to those notes, Deborah." Devin said, as he briefly glanced at the announcement, he was going to send to the people of Cetrac. Looking back to the screen, he let down his guard and showed his concern. "Are you two truly fine?"
"I'm fine, Devin. Still processing what happened to the Lions. Countess Diana seems to believe that something else caused the Lions to act out." Deborah responded first.
"I'm fine, Dev. I'm with Deborah and Diana about the Lions. I'm a bit ambient about Sky Marshal Wade, but we did get a chance to talk to him about the future. I'm not sure what would have happened to us if Countess Diana didn't act out on her quick reflexes."
Devin nodded his head to Bernice before looking at Deborah once again. "So…Deb, have you told 'Nice our personal news, yet?"
"Personal news?" Bernice asked glancing at both of her best friends.
Deborah sighed and gave Bernice a slight smile. "I was going to wait until we got back home and share the news with Dev in person." Deborah paused as she looked at Devin who let out a broad smile. "You know how I've been a little different lately? Remember when I went to the doctor's office before our trip? Well…the doctor confirmed Dev's hunch. In about 8 months from now, I'll be giving birth to a little nobleperson."
"That's great news! I'm going to be an auntie!" Bernice exclaimed. "Are you sure you're totally fine?"
"Yes, I'm fine. Since we're going home in a couple of days, I'll go to my follow-up appointment with the doctor."
"I'm going to be the best auntie in the galaxy!" Bernice beamed. "But for now," she sighed. "Let's take care of this nasty business. When we get home, we'll celebrate the good news. Dev, make all the preparations on your side for our address in two hours."
"Yes, ma'am. I'll see you two later." Devin bowed to the screen before hanging up.
"Let's get that message to your ambassador before cleaning up." Bernice nodded her agreement to Deborah and took the notepad on the coffee table.
"Let's get to it, then."
Meanwhile, at Galaxy Alliance Headquarters, Diana and Jones arrived at Wade's office. "Are you okay, Miss Smythe-Williams?" Wade's assistant Eveyln asked, standing up from her desk.
"You can call me Diana, Evelyn. You've known me for years." Diana said smiling. "I'm fine. I believe that Sky Marshal Wade is waiting for me?"
"Yes, he is. I'll page him right now," Evelyn stated as she pressed a button and let Wade know that Diana had arrived. "He'll be right with you, Diana. I can also confirm that your mother and uncle are safe at the embassy."
"Thanks, Evelyn. I take it your shift is over?" Diana asked.
"Yes, ma'am. Have a good night."
"Have a good night, Evelyn." Diana responded before Evelyn grabbed her purse and walked out of the suite with Jones escorting her. Diana turned to look at Wade's door before walking to it and knocking on the door. Wade answered that she could come in.
"Ahh…what did Lt. McClain called you?" Wade paused. "The beautiful Diana." Wade finished as he turned around to face Diana. "I'm glad that you made it to my office safely. We have some things to discuss."
"Like I had a choice in the matter. It's hard not to make it safely when you surround me with a lot of soldiers for escorts." Diana said, as she narrowed her eyes at Wade. "What did you do to the lions? I know you had something to do with this malfunction."
"I did no such thing. I was worried about the Lions malfunctioning and causing a public safety issue. And what happened tonight proved my fears when they tried to harm private citizens at the celebration."
"Sure, Wade." Diana said, rolling her eyes. "I know you had a personal hand with the Lions malfunctioning. I'm not sure whether it was a virus or a manual override. I do know that you left the celebration quite early. And don't think I didn't notice the moderate- and heavily-armed soldiers playing security guards for the celebration." Diana paused. "Not to mention that you previously attempted to sabotage Lance McClain's training crafts while he was a student. Then, there's my father's accident."
Wade chuckled. "You'll have to do better than unproven accusations, my dear. You'll never prove that I tried to kill your little boyfriend—"
"He is not my boyfriend, fiend." Diana interrupted.
"Or that I had anything to do with your father's death." Wade finished. Diana lost her cool resolve and started to slap Wade. "And you wouldn't want to lay a finger on me."
"And why wouldn't I, Wade?" Diana asked.
"If you even lay a finger on me, Diana, I will charge you with assault and lock you away in The Void."
"The Void doesn't exist. The project was cancelled."
"Is it?" Wade asked. "One of the first things I did when I took over yesterday was restart The Void. It's fully operational and the first prisoners are on their way to their new home."
"You evil bastard! One day, you'll be humbled, and I'll be there to see it." Diana replied. "With bells and whistles."
"You always say that." Wade replied evenly, as he casually stepped in front of Diana as she crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes. "I forget that you're more than the meets the eye. And that's why you need to make an important decision."
"What decision would that be?"
"Decision 1: Serve the Galaxy Alliance full-time in my intelligence division. With your experience as a reservist and a diplomat's daughter your skills will be fully utilized. You'll still be able to complete your dual Master's Social Work and Public Health degree. Once you graduate, we'll talk about your next position then."
"And decision 2?" Diana asked with her arms crossed and her eyes narrowed again.
"You can refuse. Unfortunately, I would pull all the Galaxy Alliance protection around the embassy. Did you know that there's been both violent and cyber threats against the Arusian Embassy? Did you also know that those threats were coming from the Doom sympathizers from the Drule Kingdom? I would hate for something to happen to your beautiful mother or your honorable uncle. As for you, I wouldn't miss you too much—but I will put in the most wonderful performance by crying the hardest during your funeral service." Wade said nonchalantly.
"Are you threating me, Wade?" Diana asked. "And you would dare to harm a hair on my mother's head? You would dare to put aside an old friendship with my uncle? What kind of man are you?"
"I'm just letting you know the consequences of your decisions, Diana. I'm tired of you thinking that you can have it your way. You have no idea how much you grind my gears."
"Not as much as you grind mine, Wade." Diana responded. "You've been waiting for this moment all your life, haven't you? To finally catch me in a situation where I'm no longer under the protection of diplomatic immunity. To put me in a situation where I could never serve as a light to the galaxy. You're one very sick man, Wade. That disease of hate and power has consumed you. One day, I hope you'll wake up looking like the human male version of Haggar."
"Cute. You still have a decision to make, Diana. I don't have all night."
"Don't flatter yourself, Wade. I would never spend the night with you." Diana replied. "My love for my mother, my uncle, and Arus is more than my hate for you. I accept your job offer. I need three weeks to find a replacement for me at the clinic among other things."
"I'm happy that you have decided to join the Galaxy Alliance Military full-time. I'll get the paperwork together and send it to you in the morning, Diana. Seeing that you're now a valuable asset of the Alliance, I'm going to assign a temporary bodyguard."
"I still live at the embassy. I won't need a babysitter." Diana replied.
"You'll have one unless you would like to go stay in The Void. On the bright side, you actually know your bodyguard if I remember correctly." Diana turned away from Wade in disgust as he pressed a few buttons and asked for her bodyguard to come inside. A few moments later, Diana was surprised to find one of her old boyfriends standing in front of her. In the year since they last saw each other, he grew a couple of inches. His hair was still wavy, thick, and black. His eyes were still a warm brown and his skinned still a medium-dark skin tone with all the classical features that most women would find attractive. "I thought you might remember him. Captain Lawrence Wiley, I believe you know Ms. Diana Smythe-Williams. She just agreed to serve the Alliance full-time. You know my security concerns with her."
"Yes, sir."
"Is there anything else, Sky Marshal Wade?" Diana asked.
"That'll be all, Diana. Look for your paperwork in the morning." Wade said, dismissing her. Diana nodded and turned from Wade for the last time that night, sighing once she left Wade's office.
"Diana let's get you home. I'm sure your mother and uncle are worried about you." Lawrence said, offering his arm. Diana ignored his arm and continued towards the elevator. "You could at least say hello or acknowledge me." Diana hmphed as he reached out and pressed the elevator call button. "This can't be the worst thing in the universe. I figure it would be easier if it was me compared to someone you didn't know." The elevator opened its doors, allowing Diana and Lawrence to walk in. "Would it help if I said I missed you?"
"I have nothing to say right now. It's been a long and emotional day for me," Diana finally spoke. "I'm tired and I'm looking forward to getting some kind of sleep. Get this straight, Lawrence. I don't need a babysitter and I can handle my security just fine with the help of the embassy."
"You know I still care for you, beautiful. I'm the only one who can keep up with you…especially on short notice," Lawrence pleaded. "I know that you're exhausted but hear me out. In a few days, I'm going to be your superior officer. We're going to have to work together anyway because I have the best team—so what's a few days early? You also know that you can't take care of all the threats facing the embassy." Lawrence finished pleading his case and noticed that although Diana didn't reply to his words, he could tell that she was thinking about his words. "We'll talk about it in the morning." The rest of the elevator ride was quiet as Diana purposely looked everywhere but in Lawrence's direction. When the doors opened again on the ground floor, they walked out of the elevator together. Diana continued her march out of the lobby into the late night sky.
The first thing Diana noticed was the Voltron Force being surrounded by a group of Alliance soldiers. Forgetting about how tired she was, Diana ran to the group. After a brief conversation with Keith, Hunk, and Pidge, Diana had a longer one with Allura. Assured that the group was fine and Allura was confident everything would work out, Diana focused on Lance. Remembering how easy it was for her to share her feelings with him earlier. She pulled Lance closer to her and he opened his arms for a hug. "I hate that Bastard, Lance. I don't know what he got planned for y'all, but it's probably no good." She said soft enough that only he could hear. "His hands have to be all over this. He's also forcing me to serve the Alliance full-time. I just know he's going to have me work under his thumb."
"Ssh. It'll be ok. We can handle whatever he throws our way, Diana. We'll talk about everything in the morning. I'm just glad that your safe and on your way home." Lance said, just as soft.
"But what if—" Diana started but Lance interrupted her.
"Trust us. We'll handle Wade. Go home and get some sleep. I'll see you in the morning, Beautiful." Lance then lifted Diana's chin and kissed her lips, ignoring everyone else on the steps. That was when Lawrence snatched Diana away from Lance.
"I got her, Lt. McClain. Sky Marshal Wade is waiting on you." Lawrence said as he stood between Lance and Diana. Diana gave Lance a look showing that she'll be fine and that he should get going. He sighed before following the rest of the pilots into the building. Diana turned around and followed Lawrence to the SUV waiting to take her home to the embassy. Lawrence opened the door for Diana, and she gently stepped into the vehicle. Lawrence closed the door and walked around to sit next to her. Lawrence ordered the driver to take them to the Arusian Embassy. It was a silent 15 minute ride to the embassy, but when they arrived, Diana jumped out of the car and quickly made her way to the reception room. Hyacinth and Coran ran to Diana and gave her a hug.
"Diana! I was so worried about you. Sky Marshal Wade called and said that you were on your way home with your bodyguard." Hyacinth paused and noticed that she knew the bodyguard personally. "And…Captain Lawrence Wiley, it's a pleasure to see you again."
"Thank you, Dr. Smythe-Williams. It's a pleasure to see you again, despite the circumstances."
"Are you and Uncle Coran, okay?"
"We're fine. When we left the celebration, we managed to take a quick nap before anything happened. We didn't even get to see the Voltron Force, but Keith and Allura made sure to let us know that everyone was ok, and they were on their way to meet with Sky Marshal Wade."
"I saw them as I left Headquarters. They'll be fine. It's been a long day, are you going to bed, Mom?"
"I'll stay up with your uncle and see what we can do to make things better. Go get some sleep, if we need you, I'll just wake you up."
"Ok, Mom."
"And don't forget to show Lawrence his room for the time being," Hyacinth called out behind Diana as she left to take the stairs.
"I will. Come on, Lawrence, let's get you settled on my floor. The only room that's left is the room next to mine." Diana said, yawning.
"That's the perfect room." Lawrence said, as he followed her up the stairs. Fifteen minutes later, Diana had Lawrence settled next to her room and was slowly changing into her nightgown. Diana let loose a sigh, before getting into her bed and turning the lights off. The last thought she had was how she was going to get herself out of this situation.
***Modern Day, The Void***
"And so, that's our tale of the celebration." Diana and Bernice said together. Diana stretched her arms above her head.
"You mean to tell me that you were in denial about your feelings for Lance but still hugged and kissed him in front of everybody?" Cheryl asked.
"Hey! He kissed me. All I did was hug him in front of everyone. It was a very emotional night."
"But can we talk about that Bernice knows more than just ballroom dance? I need pictures!" Alex said.
"There're pictures around somewhere. Wade can't erase all of history." Diana replied. "I'm sure there's a few archives that even he can't break in."
"So, I guess we're next." Cheryl said, looking at Alex.
"I guess so…" Alex said, clearing her throat. Unfortunately, at that moment the recreation break was over, and everyone was ushered into their blocks. Diana walked with Alex until they had to part at her door. Diana said she'll see her during dinner before walking into her room. After the door closed, Diana leaned against the wall and let her thoughts stray to Lance. With a smile, Diana closed her eyes.
