Chapter Sixteen
Mark and Ellen were taken to the kitchen, with David getting out a recorder for the conversation, while Don and Kim decided to take a walk with their kids, as they didn't want to complicate anything during the interview and they will be hearing the whole thing as the investigation goes further along.
The older couple revealed everything that they knew and/or could even remember, going back at least 30 years, as they had gotten into money troubles due to some bad investments (and some gambling debts on Mark's part) they had made in a scam that hurt hundreds of people.
Then it got worse when a businessman named Anderson called, saying he was willing to help out with their debts, which led to them borrowing even more money from other unsavory people the couple ended up owing many favors to.
As they continued talking while both Charlie and Alan distractedly listening in, it made Charlie wonder how Kim dealt with this growing up but considering that she has little to no contact, except for the strange sporadic contact in the last few months, it wasn't good for her.
They were still talking when Don and Kim came back with the twins, and were filled in on what the older couple had said so far.
Kim was not too surprised, if she was being honest, as she had figured what was going on with her parents' finances but she never figured it was this to extant.
After another long half hour of talking, Mark and Ellen agreed to testify against these men in exchange for immunity, though they still face possible jail time.
Kim was relieved that they were willing to turn in their "associates" but she wondered if they hadn't been threatened by these people.
It's probably best not to know and try to move forward and see if her parents will try to change their ways.
She just had to hope that it would be for the better.
