Part Nine

Patrol had been boring. Xander was teamed up with Willow and Tara. It wasn't that he didn't want to hang out with them, he just would have preferred hanging out with Spike. "Stupid vampire, standing me up. What am I a ditch-able prom date?" Xander knew he was sounding like he and Spike were dating he just hated that he started feeling like a part of something and for it to just disappear made him scared.

Before going home Xander stopped by the Double Meat Palace for a burger. Greasy goodness always cheered him up. He grabbed the bag before getting out of his car. He took the stairs because Spike made fun of him one time for being a wuss for taking the elevator. By the time he made it to his floor Xander was quietly singing about cheeseburgers. He froze when he got to his apartment and saw the door was ajar. Dropping his burger Xander pulled out a knife from the sheath on his belt that Spike had bought him.

He had a tight grip on the knife as he silently entered his apartment. There was blood on the door knob and large pearls of blood on the floor. There was nothing else to do but to follow the trail. It didn't take long to find where the blood came from. Spike was crumpled in a heap on the floor just a few feet away from the bathroom.

The knife fell from Xander's hand as he rushed over to Spike. "Spike!" He skidded on his kneels. Spike was facing away from him so he slowly rolled him over. He needed to know where the blood was coming from. Xander's face went pale and he thought he was going to throw up.

Spike's face was bruised, cut and swollen but that wasn't what made Xander sick. It was clear to see that Spike's fangs/canine teeth had been removed. Xander placed a hand on Spike's shoulder to shake him awake but he was greeted with more blood. He had been stabbed multiple times. There was no time to go to the kitchen to get the blood from in there so Xander reached out and grabbed the knife he dropped. Gritting his teeth Xander sliced open his arm, blood instantly began to ooze.

Xander dragged Spike over so his head rested on Xander's lap. "Come on, Spike." Xander pressed his arm against Spike's mouth. "You called me a nummy treat once, time for you to find out that you were right." There was no response. "Come on, baby. You can do it." Xander didn't stop to question why he had just called Spike baby. Now wasn't the time.

Suddenly Spike began to swallow though his eyes never opened. It didn't need to be a lot of blood, just enough to hopefully bring Spike back to consciousness. Then Xander could grab the pigs blood.

Spike's eyes didn't open but tears fell from the corners of his eyes. "You're safe," Xander whispered. "You're with me and you're safe."

Finally Spike's eyes were able to open after multiple attempts. They were brimming with tears and he couldn't stop the whimper that escaped his throat.

"Hey." Xander ran his thumb over Spike's bloody cheek. "Can I get you off the floor?"

Spike merely nodded. If he talked Xander would see that he was less of a vampire than he already was with the chip.

It was awkward but Xander managed to get him and Spike off the floor. He tossed a blanket onto the couch before setting Spike's bloody body down. "I'm gonna get you some more blood and then I'm gonna clean you up."

Xander ran into the kitchen and pulled two packs of blood out of the fridge ripped them open and dumped the content into mugs. As he waited for them to warm up Xander was trying to remember how to breathe. Spike's injuries were not life threatening, so to speak. But his fangs? His fangs were gone and there was no amount of blood that could fix it.

The timer beeped, startling Xander. As much as Xander wanted to get the blood to Spike fast, he knew the blood would end up on the floor and that wouldn't do Spike any good. Once he made it to the living room Xander set the mugs on the coffee table. "I'm back," he said softly.

Spike moaned and turned away from Xander. He couldn't let him see him like this. Than why did he even come here? Because in the end Spike didn't have anyone else.

Xander manoeuvred Spike and sat on the couch with one leg on the cushions and had Spike's back pressed against his chest. Awkwardly Xander was able to grab the first mug. "Alright, Spike." He placed the mug against Spike's lips. "I'm gonna go slow." Cautiously he started to tip the mug. Xander could feel Spike start to drink.

Spike was so weak that it took him much longer to finish the blood that it normally would have.

"Let's get your cleaned up." Xander sat Spike up. He hoped that he wasn't causing Spike too much pain with the constant moving.

First Xander removed the bloody duster. "I'll take it to the cleaners and it will be as good as new," he promised.

"Don't want it," Spike said gruffly. The duster would just be another reminder of who he had been. The vampire that he would never be again. Now he was just nothing. "Throw it out. Burn it. I don't care."

There was no way Xander was going to do either of those things but Spike didn't need to know that right now. Next was the black t-shirt. There were large tears in it that Xander was able to just rip it open. It would definitely be going into the garbage. With the shirt now gone Xander could see just how many time's Spike had been stabbed or staked. It honestly looked like both. "What did they do to you?" Xander felt tears welling up.

"They took everything," Spike mumbled. "Bloody humans thinking you're better than us demons."

"Humans did this to you?" Rage ignited in Xander. For five years he and his friends had risked their lives, with losses along the way and these bastards did this to Spike? "How did they know about the chip?"

Spike looked at himself and saw that while he wasn't fully healed it was looking a lot better than an hour ago. "I guess word has gotten out about some demons not being about to hurt humans."

"I'm sorry," Xander apologized. He didn't know what else to say. He realized he didn't get anything to actually clean Spike up. He got up and went to the bathroom to get peroxide which probably wouldn't help but it was the least Xander could do, along with a small bucket from under the sink and a clean cloth and his first aid kit. He filled up the bucket with warm water and went back out to Spike.

Spike was resting his eyes. He was so tired and he didn't have the energy to look at Xander. Spike jerked his head away when Xander started to wipe the blood off of his face. "Don't."

"We need to get the blood off." Xander didn't stop but his touch became gentler than it already was.

Spike knew Xander was right, the blood was dry and itchy he just didn't want his face to be touched. Soon after Xander had moved to his chest and stomach. The warm water did feel good.

Once Xander was done he had counted twelve stab wounds. He cautiously patted the skin dry. "This might sting." He wanted to assume after everything Spike had just been through peroxide would be a walk in the park.

It was more of a tickle to Spike. "I'm a vampire," Spike reminded Xander. Did he already forget?

"Shush, let me take care of you." Xander proceeded to place gauze and tape over every single healing wound. He sat back on his heals and looked at his work. He stood up and untied Spike's docs. "Let's get you a little more comfy."

"Thank you," Spike said. He could hear that his speech wasn't like how it had been. Missing teeth would do that.

"I was getting rusty on my nursing skills." Xander left the room and came back with a pillow and blanket. He lifted Spike's head and placed the pillow under him. He then draped the blanket over him.

The blanket was so warm, Spike could have melted into it. "Wasn't talking about that. I was talking about your blood."

Xander looked down at his arm and while it had stopped bleeding he probably should take care of it. "It's not a big deal."

"Really? So you would have gladly let Angel drink your blood?" Spike questioned. He had finally opened his eyes and could see that Xander was looking pale. "You need to eat."

"Only my friends get to drink my blood." Xander sat on the floor his back against the couch. "In a little bit. I'm tired. Let's just rest for now." Xander's head tilted back and he started to snore.

Sleep sounded really good. Spike soothed himself to sleep by running his hand through Xander's hair.
