Marsha and Dwight lay in bed that night. They were talking.
"That was very sweet," Dwight said, "Treating Adrian and Trudy to a week at the Hylton hotel."
"Yes. Well, Trudy needs to take care of herself," Marsha said, "I'm really worried about her."
Dwight nodded. He too, was worried about Trudy. She seemed very emotional. He also couldn't help but notice that she seemed exhausted.
"She's probably tired," Dwight assured Marsha, "I mean she is getting up with the triplets just like we are and Adrian is."
"Yes, but I'm more worried about her emotional well-being."
Trudy had gone through a period of depression when she was 14. It was right after the incident.
"She doesn't seem depressed," Dwight remarked, "But we should definitely watch her closely."
"I'm especially worried that she feels like she's taking advantage of us," Marsha explained.
"She's not doing any such thing," Dwight commented.
"I know. When she was 14, she felt like that too. It worries me so much."
In the other room, Adrian and Trudy were talking.
"Honey," Adrian asked, "Have you been feeling depressed?"
"That doesn't make sense," Trudy said, "I have no reason to be depressed."
"Depression is a disease," Adrian said holding Trudy close, "That's like saying Karen had no reason to get Ovarian cancer or that Caroline had no reason to get leukemia."
"To be honest," Trudy admitted, "I've been feeling down the past day or so. I feel so guilty about that-"
"Why? You did nothing wrong. I wish you had been straight-forward about this when it started-"
"We have 3 newborn babies, 2 almost 3-year-olds, and a child who is turning 3 in a few months," Trudy pointed out.
"We do," Adrian acknowledged, "We have six children who need their mother to be happy and healthy. You may need to go on medication."
"I guess I might," Trudy admitted, "That's kind of a hard thing to admit to myself."
Amiee started crying.
"I got her," Marsha called, "You two keep talking"
Trudy shook her head in amazement.
"How does she always know," she asked.
"It's called being a mom," Adrian replied, "Your dad knows too because he's a dad."
"My mom gave birth less than a week ago and she doesn't seem depressed."
"It would be impossible for her to be depressed," Adrian said laughing, "She has you back."
Trudy smiled slightly.
"That was 3 years ago," she pointed out.
"Yeah, and it might as well have been today," Adrian replied, "But let's get back to what we were talking about," he added.
Trudy changed the subject but to a relevant topic.
"Ever since I remembered what happened," she began referring to the bombing and the reason for it, "I feel so guilty."
Adrian took her hand.
"If I hadn't been out past curfew," she added, "I wouldn't have been raped. If I hadn't accepted Rickover's offer to walk me home I wouldn't have been raped. If I hadn't been raped he wouldn't have attempted to have me killed in a car bomb."
"Being raped is not an 'acceptable punishment' for being out past curfew," Adrian pointed out.
Trudy chuckled.
"Mom used to say that negativity should come with a skull and crossbones because it's toxic," she said.
"She's right," Adrian replied, "Though I must admit it's hard to be positive sometimes."
Trudy nodded.
"Do I ever know that," she said.
Hope woke up from a nightmare.
"Let's go into her together," Adrian suggested.
…
"Hey sweetie," Adrian said, "Bad dream?"
Hope nodded. She told them all about her dream. Trudy and Adrian held her until she fell back asleep.
On Ava and Ella's birthday day, Hope woke up with a fever. She had a sore throat, an earache, and chills. Trudy called Dr. Decker. He came over.
"I don't feel good," Hope said.
"I know," Dr. Decker told her gently, "But I'm going to give you something to make you feel a lot better."
He gave her a pill. She started to take it.
"No. Not on an empty stomach," Dr. Decker told her, "Bring her some ice cream."
Trudy went and got Hope some strawberry ice cream. She also got her apple juice. Hope ate the ice cream and took the pill with the apple juice.
"Now lay down and try to rest," Dr. Decker said.
"Can I listen to my book on tape," Hope asked.
"Of course," Adrian replied.
Dr. Decker motioned for Adrian and Trudy to follow him outside Hope's room.
"I'm concerned about the size of her tonsils," he said, "If she hasn't improved in 2 weeks I want to get her tonsils taken out."
"She's not even 3," Trudy said concerned.
"I know," Dr. Decker replied, "But this must be taken care of as soon as possible. It could become a real problem."
"Mommy," Ella interrupted, "Aimee and Diana are awake. Can Ava and I hold them?"
"Yes," Trudy nodded, "But you have to be quiet because Hope is sick."
"What's wrong," Ava asked,
"She has a fever," Adrian explained, "Her ears hurt and her throat hurts. Dr. Decker gave her something to help her feel better."
After Ava and Ella held the babies they went into their room to check on Hope.
"I'm sorry I got sick on your birthday," Hope told her sisters.
"It's not your fault," Ella said, "Why don't we watch some cartoons?"
"Can we watch Cinderella?" Hope asked
"Sure," Ava and Ella replied in unison.
Ava turned on the movie. They sat together next to Hope who was lying down. They all laughed at the song, Bibbity Bobbity Boo.
"Let's watch Moral Bears next," Hope suggested, "That was the TV cartoon Mommy starred in."
"Awesome," Ella said.
"Mommy starred in Moral Bears?" Ava asked surprised.
"Oh yeah," Hope said, "She came up with the idea too. Grandpa aduced the show."
"Produced honey," Trudy said coming in.
"Mommy," Ava asked, "Could you get us the Moral Bears tapes?"
Trudy grinned.
"I sure can," she said.
She went and got the Moral Bear tapes.
"Could you and Daddy watch it with us," Hope asked.
"Of course," Adrian and Trudy said together.
They all sat on the bed. The first episode came on.
"Who are you Mommy," Ava asked.
"I was Beary Good Bear," Trudy replied, "Angela was Beary Sweet Bear and Ilizabeth was Beary Nice Bear."
"That's awesome!" Ava exclaimed.
Beary Smart Bear was played by an actor named Jack Dustin.
"Okay class," Beary Smart Bear was saying, "This is how the people back in the day wore britches."
"What's b*tches?" Hope asked.
Adrian and Trudy looked at each other and burst out laughing.
"That's what I said when I first played this scene," Trudy said, "It's britches honey, not b*tches."
"Oh"
"BRITCHES are a type of pants," Trudy explained, "A B*tch is a mean thing to say about a woman."
"It's not nice to say mean things about anyone," Ella said.
"That's exactly right," Trudy replied.
"Mommy? Do you and Daddy love Hope, Ella, and me as much as you love Faith, Diana and Aimee?"
"Of course we do," Trudy said, "What makes you ask that?"
"Well, they're your real children," Ava said, "In swimming class Amanda said that Mommies and Daddies love their real children more than their adopted ones."
"First of all," Adrian said firmly, "Amanda is wrong"
Trudy nodded.
"Besides," she added, "You are our real children. We loved you from the second we knew you."
"Why did our birth mom not want us," Ava asked.
"It wasn't that she didn't want you," Adrian replied, "She was very young when you were born. Hope's birth mother knew she couldn't properly take care of her so she gave her to us. It's the same with your birth mother. Sometimes love means doing the things you don't want to do."
"You're our real parents," Hope said.
Ella and Ava echoed the same thing.
Trudy and Adrian grinned and tickled the kids on the stomach making them giggle.
When Hope woke up the next morning, she was still sick. Her throat felt like it was on fire.
To make it worse she couldn't pee. Trudy called Dr. Decker again.
"Hi," she said, "I'm sorry to bother you but-"
"You have nothing to apologize for," Dr. Decker replied, "You're my friend and there's something wrong with Hope."
He came over to their house and examined Hope again.
"Can you two come with me," he asked.
He led them out of the room so Hope couldn't hear.
"She needs to be in San Francisco Children's Hospital."
"Her tonsils?" Trudy asked.
"Well that… and I suspect she has a bladder infection," Dr. Decker added.
Adrian and Trudy looked at each other.
"Is that serious," Trudy asked.
"Without proper intervention, it could take her life."
Trudy paled. Her first child was dying!
Technically Molly was her first child but Molly died within minutes after she was born. She never got to hold Molly or see her. It was only after her death that she was able to… and she was too shocked to comprehend it. Hope, on the other hand, was different. She was Hope's mother from the moment Hope was born.
"Adrian, call my parents," Trudy instructed, "They have to know what's going on. Watch the other kids until they get home and then join Hope and I at San Fransico Children's Hospital."
Adrian nodded and kissed Trudy. Trudy explained to Hope and the twins what was going on.
"So, I'm going to go to heaven?" Hope asked.
"You're going to get better honey," Trudy said, "But we need to get you to the hospital."
"Can we go with her," Ava asked.
"Of course," Trudy said.
"Will you be there," Hope asked.
Meanwhile, Adrian called Marsha and Dwight. He explained the situation.
"We'll be there as soon as we can," Marsha said, "Hang tight."
Marsha went home to take care of the triplets. Dwight and Adrian drove to the hospital.
"How are you holding up," Dwight asked Adrian.
"Honestly? I'm terrified," Adrian admitted.
"I know what it's like to have a sick child," Dwight remarked, "But it's going to be alright. Hope survived Pneumonia. She will survive this too."
"I'll feel better when she's better," Adrian said.
Dwight nodded.
"We all will," he agreed.
