Yggdrasil closed beta test one week before launch

It was my first day in the Yggdrasil closed beta, which I had signed up for as soon as the company announced its new VMMORPG. This game was supposed to be one of the more advanced games with the ability to make you feel like you were there, and I was hoping it would be fun. However, I knew the race class I would be playing would not be easy. Because the devs thought it would be hilarious to make, humans require racial class levels, which you could only get by PKing others. I, of course, had read the dev notes before submitting my request to the company for my pre-registered character. Hiding would be easy to do for 30 minutes, but I didn't doubt the devs had included a way to cancel my skill or see through it somehow forcibly. I knew my skills would be perfect for assassination missions on Midgard. Paralyzing enemies for even the shortest amount of time would give me a way to escape. I asked for these two skills for such an event. I figured I would find the warp to Midgard and start working as a warrior for hire. Any problems encountered can be negated by swordsmanship and artificer abilities. For example, I could use my 300 spell slots to create special enchantments and learn specialized tier spells.

I warped to the warm green grounds of Midgard. It was a world, unlike the one I currently live in. The real world was full of pollution and corruption, but the human realm was pristine here in Yggdrasil, with a bright night sky. The stars sparkled like jewels, and the moon glowed a brilliant yellow. I walked to the small town of Exnca. The town had a small guild hall and was a great starter base for people just starting to play. This town was where the Devs had put one of the few quests that weren't random. It was a kill quest. There are beasts in the forest located outside of town. If I could get to the adventurers guild register and then exterminate the beasts hiding in the woods. The reward for completing the quest are skill levels, gold, and a unique skill because this quest is limited to those who got into the beta before it closed. Each time a player completes the quest, they get a different ability. So, there was no way of knowing what you would get.

I figured I should get a sword from the blacksmith. Thankfully the devs weren't terrible enough to leave you without any of the currency that you could use to get items. Starter players got 100 gold to spend, and once that was gone, it was gone. There were no more freebies, and everything else would have to be bought with real money or earned through PKing or making bets. Before entering the town, I activated my Disguise Set skill, appearing like a red-haired boy with glasses. Walking towards the blacksmith shop, the Smith sits at his forge crafting a new weapon.

"I'll be with you in a minute." said the Smith.

"Okay, I'll take a look around while you finish up."

Looking at the shelves, I saw some exciting things. Shining polearms stood against the wall, and some finished with a silver tip for hunting peskier beasts that only could be killed by the metal. Several swords were placed in holders along the shelves to show their craftsmanship. Next to the polearms, neat bronze and light armor sets could be seen. Some of the armor appeared to be made of Mythril, but I wasn't so sure a starter town would have Mythril gear for sale. I grimaced, going back to the selves scanning for a decently priced sword. The lowest-priced iron sword still costs about 50 gold. An actual burden should I need to get healing items. I picked up the sword and made my way to the counter.

"So, this is a very nice sword, but I realized it had no special abilities. I am thinking 35 gold for it."

"Are you crazy, boy? That sword took me eight hours to forge and make strong 50 is where I will stay."

"Yes, well, while you might have expertly crafted the sword, it is just an iron katana. I think 40 is a more fair price."

"Son, I am a master of my craft, and I can see that you would like this sword. So, I will cut you a deal on it. 44 gold and not a single gold less."

"Sir, you drive a hard bargain, but I will take your deal and add exclusivity. I will not buy swords elsewhere or have them repaired anywhere else. I ask that in time you find a day to take me as an apprentice."

"Fine, fine, kid, I'll remember that should you become a big name around here."

"That's all that I ask." I paid the Smith and jaunted out of the shop whistling a merry tune. Taking my time, I made my way to the adventurers guild. I was looking at the rustic appearance of the town. Small cottages with cobble roads, the scent of wood smoke drifting out of the chimneys. It was a lovely sight compared to the everyday monotony. This was a breath of fresh air. Arriving at my destination, I made my way inside. The registration process was easy though I registered as a mercenary so I could join guilds created by the players later on.

Walking out onto the cobbled streets, I stopped to take it all in. Wandering around and helping out the NPCs with large purchases and making sure people got home safe. It wasn't until the sun was on the horizon that the timer in my HUD started beeping. Cursing my rotten luck, I bolted out of town and into the woods just as my Disguise Set wore off. If that wasn't the worst part, I had entered the lush forest on the other side of the town—the place where the quest was supposed to start. Just then, a notification popped into the HUD.

I, of course, fell knee-deep into the quest in the forest. I had no skills in swordsmanship and had no idea how to use my sword. The only thought I had at the time was, "Well, here we go, I'm gonna die."
