"You shut my system off! You are the WORST sister ever! I hate you!"
All Lara had done was tried to plug in a controller so she could play with her older brother. He was 15 and she was 10. He never wanted to play with Lara but she still couldn't help but want to spend time with him. He grumbled under his breath as he turned his system back on. As the title screen played on the television, he turned his angry eyes to the crying girl sitting on the floor behind him. "You are such a pain! I wish you were never born!"
As the words tumbled from his mouth, Lara's eyes widened as the screen turned a blinding white. It was something the two children had never seen before. The light seemed to fill the entire room and before either knew what happened, a soothing female voice filled the room and both children froze in shock. "You are unloved here, child. Come with me and all will be better for you." Lara blinked, unsure of what to say. She knew that things weren't good here for her and that her brother was loved more than she was. Lara was constantly reminded that she was an unwanted accident. Her eyes moved to her brother, whose face looked unsure. Biting her lip, Lara nodded and was sucked into the light.
The light grew brighter and the voice spoke again. "You will have no memory of ever having a sister. She is now erased from this world." The boy watched the screen for a moment as it returned to normal. His eyes glazed over for a few seconds before he blinked, shook his head and continued playing, no memory of Lara to be found.
For Lara, she seemed to float in a castle, beyond the windows was a rainbow sky, her body without form. She looked down at herself, seeing nothing but light. Her eyes moved to nine men and women sitting around her. They were all in human form but something inside Lara told them that this was a glamour. A woman stepped forward and smiled. "Do not be afraid, child. We have taken you from the world of sadness you resided in before and brought you here. In your new life you will have adventure. You will be a force to be reckoned with. You will have love and purpose. You will be one of the greatest heroes of all time."
Lara blinked. "How will I do that? I'm just a little girl!" The figures smiled and their eyes moved back to the woman. "All will be decided child, but first, introductions. I am Mara, Goddess of Love and Compassion." Mara began to gesture to the people sitting behind her.
"This is Akatosh, the Dragon God of Time.
This is Arkay, God of the Cycle of Life and Death.
This is Dibella, Goddess of Beauty and Love.
Here is Julianos, God of Wisdom and Logic.
Kynareth is Goddess of Air, Wind, Sky and the Elements.
Stendarr is God of Compassion, Mercy, Justice, Charity, and Luck.
Zenithar is God of Work and Commerce.
Talos, is the newest of the Gods. He is the Hero God of Mankind. God of Might, Honor, State, Law and Man."
"Lara blinked, feeling a little bit overwhelmed. "There are so many of you. In my old world we had a lot of Gods but a lot only believed in one." Mara smiled, nodding softly. "We have seen much of your world. However, we are offering you a new life as a hero on ours. We have seen inside of your heart and your strength of spirit and we all believe that you would be just the hero our world needs."
Listening to the words, Lara felt confused. "How could I help?" Mara sat back down on her throne and waved her hand, a seeing orb appearing in front of Lara. She gasped as she saw might fighting in war and dragons causing havoc and people running and screaming. Her eyes moved to the Nine in their thrones before the images disappeared. "The humans who pray to us have asked us for help, so we have chosen you. Most of the images you have seen have not yet come to pass, however, when they do, you will be of age and strength to help. We have set everything into motion and we want to prepare you for what you will become."
Another image appeared in front of Lara and she gasped at the woman she saw. It was an older version of herself, she knew that, but she didn't look the same. She had long black hair tied into a high braid that swept over her shoulder. Her ears were pointed and her features slim and angular. She was firing arrows on a dragon, bringing the beast to its knees. Akatosh frowned at this and Lara's eyes met his. "These are your children, aren't they? Why would you want me to destroy them?"
Akatosh was quiet for a moment before answering. "My children have lost their way. My eldest, Alduin has become a monster. They all have. It saddens me, but I will do what needs to be done. I will make you the next Dragonborn. You will know what that means in time." Lara looked around them and found the people watching her. How could she do this? She felt as if she were biting her lip but at the same time, her body had no form. "Will I be reborn at this age, or as a woman?"
Mara clasped her hands together and leaned forward, her eyes on the soul in front of them. "You would be born the age your are, but with certain differences. This were put in to motion that need to be followed through. The Dwemer, before they caused their demise, saved a child in a cryotank. You would be placed in the body of that child. You will have her memories, but her life has been extinguished. She was never to remain in the tank for so long. You will be the last Dwemer. We have made it so you will be found by a traveler and raised to be a warrior."
Lara throught about this. On one hand, to be a hero of a new world seemed like an exciting adventure, and yet, it was scary as well. Her eyes turned back to the images of the woman she would grow to be. She looked like a superhero almost. Yelling at the dragon and fighting it down. Lara was still a child though and was afraid.
Mara sensed this and gave her a reassuring smile. "We will be with you, Lara. You will never be alone. You will have us, and strong friends and companions to lean on. In this life you will be loved. You will be respected."
Looking from Mara, to the orb and back, Lara blinked. "What will happen to your world if I don't?" Akatosh stood, a sigh leaving his chest. "Our last Dragonborn was a disappointment. He let his power get into his head and turn him from his path. This is your choice, Lara. We are simply giving it to you. If you truly wish it, we can send you back to your old life. As we've said, the choice is yours."
Lara didn't know how much time had passed, but finally, she nodded. "I'll do it. I will trust in the Nine of you." They each smiled and Mara stood again, coming closer to her. Her body began to have form and she felt Mara's kiss upon her forehead. "We thank you, Daughter. Go and fulfill your purpose. A man will be there to help you. You will be safe with him. Also, we will leave our artifacts for you to find, each endowed with our blessing." With another wave of Mara's hand, Lara felt herself falling and then slamming into a body.
Kodlak, a fresh faced 25 year old, was exploring on his own. He'd finally been admitted into the Companions and had some down time between jobs. He'd found a map of an unknown Dwemer cavern from a group of bandits he'd fought and was on his way to it. When he made his way inside, sword in hand, he had no idea what to expect. He was about 20 feet in when the ground collapsed beneath him and found himself inside a dark room. The only light was from a tank against the wall. Making his way towards it, he was shocked to see a small girl of 5 years old inside. She had pointed ears and long black hair and it seemed her skin had a blue tint to it. Looking at her, she looked restful as she floated in the liquid inside. A glowing blue button was on a pedestal beside the tank.
Thinking on it, Kodlak heard a voice in his head to push it. Before he knew what happened, he'd pushed it and the tank emptied and the glass opened. The girl was now sitting on the bottom and her eyes were still closed. He reached forward, touching her forehead. Her skin felt cool to the touch and Kodlak cried out and threw himself back as the girl took a gasping breath.
As her eyes opened, he found himself in awe. Her eyes were a solid blue, no white to them at all. There were silver flecks however, and Kodlak was amazed. The child had literal stars in her eyes. Around the girls neck was a vial of the same blue liquid that had been in her tank. Not thinking on it, he turned his eyes to the girl, who had caught her breath and was looking at him. "Who are you?" She asked, tilting her head. Kodlak sheathed his sword and looked down at her. "My name is Kodlak and I will be the future Harbinger of the Companions!" Lara blinked as her Dwemer name echoed in her head.
"My name is Nhevlara Dadryna." Kodlak nodded, mumbling the name under his breath. He handed her a piece of cloth to help dry herself off. All she had was linen tunic and looked to be cold. His eyes lifted to the hole above them and sighed. "Give me a moment and I will have us out of here." Lara watched as he looked around the room their were in, finding several large bookcases and shelves. After he had looted what he could and moved the largest bookcase to the hole, they both climbed out. Lara winced in the light of the sun, her eyes sensitive to the harsh brightness. Kodlak fished another cloth from his pack and tied it around her head like a scarf. It helped to shield her eyes from the light and she had a sneaking suspicion that it was to hide her ears as well.
When Kodlak asked about her past, she told him what she could remember of the girls memories. "I just remember running and hearing people screaming around me. My mother put the vial around my neck and placed me in the tank. She kissed my forehead and told me to always remember her and do what I could to restore what was lost." Kodlak ran a hand over his face and let out a puff of air. "Restoring the Dwemer. THAT would be a wonder." He fed her some venison and cheese that he had in his pack along with some bread. Looking at the state of the sun, he sighed. "We should get back. I want to get back to Whiterun before dark." They both got on his horse and rode off into the distance.
*Time Jump 25 years*
Lara opened her eyes and scanned the ceiling above her. Sighing, she set up, grateful for having her own room. The newest round of Companions and still some of the older members didn't trust the fact that she was a Dwemer. Kodlak wouldn't hear of it though. He'd found her 25 years ago and had raised her as his daughter. He'd seen to it that she grew up strong and capable. He'd trained her in many weapons but her favorite were her daggers and the bow. She was stealthy and quick, so archery came naturally to her.
Standing, Lara looked at herself in her long mirror, her eyes moving over the features she'd seen in that orb in the Hall of the Nine. Her skin had the blue tint and her eyes were still the blue with silver specs that Kodlak seemed to love. He said she had the stars in her eyes but Lara understood that it must have been from being in the Tank for so long. She'd done the math because she couldn't remember much about it, but she'd been in the Tank for over 4000 years.
Sighing, she ran her comb through her hair, tying it up so she could bathe. Still dressed in a linen tunic and leather breeches, she grabbed her bathing bag and the her dress before leaving her room. She kept a small steel dagger with her because she still didn't trust very many people.
Making her way out to the bathhouse, she locked the door behind her, smiling as she heard the comforting noises of the Dwemer machinery that made the bathhouse possible. She'd talked Kodlak into it because there was no way she wasn't bathing. She'd become quite good and building things and everyone knew it was the Dwemer in her. There was a large tub in the center of the small building and a Dwemer pipeline that brought fresh water from the lake nearby. Beside the tub were two large baskets. One held used soul gems and the other held red gems embued with a fire spell. You would touch the gems to the water and the water would warm. Afterward you would place the used gem in the second basket. It really was a genius thing to do. Being a magic user herself, Lara couldn't spell all of the jewels herself so Kodlak hired the Jarls mage, Faramir to help when it was time.
Sinking into the warm water, Lara set quick work on bathing herself. She inhaled the scent of mountain flower and honey from her soap and smiled, thankful that she'd made a friend of Arcadia, who she loved making soaps with. The shampoo was a curious thing. They didn't call it shampoo as Lara did, it was a cleansing potion made of thistles, cream and a few other things that Arcadia used. Lara didn't know much about it, only that it smelled wonderful.
After she bathed, she put on the air vent and dried her pin straight hair. Lara didn't mind having straight hair. It was much easier to braid. When her long hair was dried and braided, she began to dress. Her green dress with the leather corset made her skin look an almost normal color. At this point, there was no use hiding it. Everyone in Skyrim had heard about the last Dwemer and did all they could to get a look. Thankfully the hype had gone down over the years. Lara thought that it would drive Kodlak crazy if one more person came to Jorrvaskr to see her.
Chuckling softly, she adjusted her necklace and stepped out, pulling the lever to drain the dirty water. She felt the eyes of Vilkas and Farkas on her as she made her way back inside and shook her head. They acted interested in her but it was just the novelty of it, so she put them from her mind. She wanted someone who wanted HER, not what she was. She put her things in the hamper in her room and made her way down the hallway to Kodlak's suite. She found him sitting, enjoying a bowl of hot venison stew. Seeing a portion there for her, Lara silently thanked Tilma as she sat.
Kodlak looked upon her warmly and smiled. "Good Morning, Lara. I trust you slept well?" Looking at the man who raised her, Lara nodded. "Yes, I did." Not much needed to be said as they ate together. Her eyes moved over him, seeing how the last 25 years had aged him. He was a human after all. In the 25 years she'd been here, she knew that she was 5 when Kodlak had found her, however, she aged different being a Dwemer. She was 30 years old but didn't look a day over 17. Kodlak, however, had grown older and his hair was now grey.
He'd done a magnificent job as Harbinger. Lara knew that was why so many people still joined. Lara was proud of the man who had taken her in and raised her, no questions asked. She was soaking a piece of bread in the stew when Kodlak put down his spoon and spoke. "Are you still following through with your plan?" Her eyes moved to him and she nodded. "Yes, I'm still planning to leave tomorrow." She stopped and Kodlak frowned, looking into his bowl. "I will miss you, Lara." Tears burned her eyes and she put her hand over his. "I won't be gone forever, Kodlak. You won't lose me. I just need to find out who I am here. I need to find out more about my past and my people."
Kodlak nodded, tears lining his eyes. "I understand that. It's hard for me, however. I still see you as the small girl I found all those years ago." A warm smiled split Lara's face and she chuckled. "So much has happened since then. I've been training so hard and learning so much." Kodlak squeezed her hand and returned her smile. "I can still remember the first bow we had Eorlund make for you. I'll never forget your laughter when you hit the target's eye for the first time."
Lara threw her head back and laughed. "It took me FOREVER to get it!" For a while longer, they talked of past times and other things when Kodlak sobered. "So you're doing this because the Nine granted you another vision?" Lara shook her head. "Not so much a vision but a dream. They said that things had been set in motion and that my time had come to go out into the world and get started." Kodlak frowned, his hand stroking his beard. "I still don't like you going off by yourself." Lara shook her head again, standing. "I will be fine. That does remind me that I have to pick up my armor and weapons from Adrienne this afternoon." Placing her hand on his shoulder, she looked into his eyes. "I will be alright, Kodlak. You've taught me everything I could ever possibly need to know. You helped me be strong and capable. I couldn't have asked for more in a father."
"Kodlak's eyes widened and he stood, hugging Lara fiercely to his chest. She felt him shaking and it caused her eyes to tear up and she buried her face into his chest, thankful he wasn't wearing his armor yet. "Lara, I know I didn't father you physically, but...I am so proud to call you my daughter. I am honored that you think of me as a father." Lara nodded, unable to speak. When they pulled away, she wiped her eyes and laughed, touching the wet spot on his tunic. "Sorry for that." Kodlak smiled and shook his head, his own cheeks wet as he looked down at her. "No need for apologies. I don't mind at all."
Clearing her throat, she stepped away, smiling up at him. "I'm going to go into the market to start gathering my supplies. I will be back before dark." Kodlak nodded, watching Lara walk away from him. Pride filled him as he lifted his eyes to give a silent prayer to the Nine.
Lara walked around the market, first going to Arcadia's to pick up her potions and ingredients she'd need for the road. She purchased a few more bars of soap and a few bottles of shampoo. Then it was off to Belethor's even though she couldn't stand him. She bought lockpicks and a few other items and left quickly before he could start his disgusting brand of flirting. She stopped at Carlotta's and Anoriath to pick up what food she'd need for the first leg of her journey, placing some ice wraith essence over them and placing them inside the bag that held a few ice wraith teeth for added cooling. She spent some time in the Temple of Kynareth, just basking in the warmth and comfort she felt before sitting under the Gildergreen, feeling the breeze move through the branches. She made her way to the Jarl's Palace to buy some soul gems from Faramir and bid her goodbyes to him.
One of her last stops was at the Drunken Huntsman to pick up her extra arrows. Lara was confused when the elf behind the counter smiled at her and said he'd already sent them down to Warmaidens. Blinking, Lara nodded and made her way down to Adrienne, smiling as she saw the woman working on tanning some leather. Adrienne stopped when she saw Lara and smiled, rinsing her hands in a water bucket next to her. "I was wondering when I would see you today. Come inside. I have everything ready for you."
Lara followed her inside and frowned, when Adrienne led her to a table full of weapons and armor she didn't recognize. First Adrienne held up her hand, shaking her head. "Don't be angry but after you came to me with your order, Kodlak stopped by and changed it." Lara blinked as Adrienne began to show her things things Kodlak had ordered for her. "It wasn't easy to make. Kodlak had the twins go to a few Dwemer ruins to get enough pieces of Dwarven metal. He calls it the Dwemer Researcher Armor."
Lara reached for the rich purple cloth only to find that it was a kind of leather, but much softer than the normal. Turning her curious eyes to Adrienne, the woman smiled. "Sheepskin. I'm going to start using it here as well. It's softer and more pliable, not to mention it can be dyed. Kodlak mentioned that your favorite color was purple, so he brought me all the lavender and thistle that he could find. There are breeches and a top with armor pieces to be added. Gauntlets, boots, breastplates, even shoulder pieces as well." The top wrapped around her shoulders and was held in place by an X shaped piece of metal. Adrienne brought out a piece of purple sheepskin leather that had been fashioned into a necklace. "Every piece has a different enchantment added to it, and so do these weapons."
Lara turned her eyes to the large Dwarven bow and a quiver of arrows. Blinking, she ran her hands over the cool golden metal that was the bow before her eyes moved down to the dual Dwarven daggers and a laugh escaped her. Adrienne smiled at her friend, happy that she enjoyed the surprise. "He wanted you to have things that were yours and only yours. I know not many people use the Dwemer items." Lara nodded, running her hands over the soft purple leather. "I can't believe he did all of this. What enchantments do they have?"
Adrienne held up each individual piece, explaining the enchantments. "The necklace is enchanted with the ability to breathe underwater without drowning. He knows that some Dwemer ruins are under water and wanted you to be safe. The cuirass and breeches help your heath regenerate 10% faster. The gauntlets help your one handed attacks do 13% more damage. The boots increase shock resistance by 15%. This bow has a 50% chance for each element of fire, frost, and shock to do 10 points of damage. Lastly, the daggers each absorb health from all enemies you use them on. So if you inflict damage, it will help heal you." Lara shook her head. "He thought of everything, didn't he?" Adrienne nodded, a smile on her face. "He's a worried father, what else can you expect?"
Lara visited a bit longer before making her way back to Jorrvaskr. Placing her belongings in her room, she made her way back to Kodlak's suite again. He was sitting in his usual chair, making notes in his journal. Sensing her presence, he stopped writing, closed the book and turned his attention to her. "I hope your trip was fruitful?" He had a knowing smile on his face and Lara laughed. "Thank you so much for your gifts. They were lovely. Entirely too expensive, but lovely."
Kodlak stood, holding up a hand as he went to a lock box. When he returned to his seat, he held a linen wrapped package. Handing it to her, he sat back to watch her open it. When Lara removed the linen wrapping, she gasped audibly, looking at Kodlak in shock. "Is this what I think it is?!" Kodlak nodded softly, smiling as he placed it on her head. Lara felt the power coming from the circlet and shook her head. "I can't accept this, Kodlak! It's too much!" On her head, was a Diadem of the Savant. It helped all magic used to take less for each charge and only truly experienced magic wielders had one and they were NOT cheap. "Yes, you can accept it, Lara. You've worked so hard to master your crafts and this is my gift to you."
"Another gift, you mean." She grumbled, removing it from her head and looking at the beautiful gold shining in the light and how beautiful the ruby and emeralds were. Holding it to her chest, her eyes found Kodlak's and tears fell down her cheeks. "Thank you so much. It's far too much, but you already know that." Kodlak smiled. "I just wanted you to be fully prepared for your journey. Come, Tilma has made a goodbye feast for you tonight. The entire group will be there." Lara placed her circlet with the rest of her belongings and joined the rest in the Great Hall for her last dinner at Jorrvaskr for the foreseeable future.
The next morning saw Kodlak and Lara at the stables, fitting her horse with her items. Clothing and other items were seated at her back, behind the saddle and resting on the horses lower back. Her bow and arrows were also in reach behind her as well. Both daggers were strapped to her thighs, always within reach. Her necklace with the fluid sat lower on her chest and the choker settled around her neck. Looking up at her father as they finished, she hugged his neck, careful of her armor
They said their goodbyes and Lara took off at a gallop, trying not to cry or look back as she rode away from the only life she'd ever known. The Nine told her that she had a purpose, that her purpose would find her. So she needed to set out and see what found her. Rubbing the neck of her horse, Nova, Nhevlara Dadryna began the journey that would be the start of her destiny.
