Chapter 10

Attack on Trost

Kara stood with Jean, Sasha, and Conny as they watched the Scout Regiment riding through to head to the gate for their mission. Kara heard shouts to Erwin, but her eyes were looking for one Scout. One more day before they get to select what regiment they will be in.

"Look! It's Captain Levi!" A soldier shouted. Jean elbowed Kara gently and pointed ahead. Miche was riding in front but Kara saw her father riding next to Hange. "They say he's like an entire brigade unto himself." Kara snorted.

"If only you knew." Kara said. Levi didn't look happy.

"Spare me, please!" Levi grumbled.

"Father!" Kara called, waving. Levi heard his daughters voice calling to him. Levi's eyes searched through the crowd. He heard the Cadets would be there to see them off. He found her with her friends and a huge smile on her face. He gave her a smile and she saw pride on his face.

'He was informed then that I made top ten.' Kara thought with a smile on her face.

"Kara!" Hange nearly screamed.

"Four eyes. Shut up. You nearly blew out my ear drum." Levi growled.

"Whose the crazy lady with the glasses?" Conny asked.

"Section Commander Hange. She claims she's my dads best friend, but she annoys my father like crazy." Kara said.

"Brat." Levi said as he passed. She looked at him. "Stay out of trouble." Kara smiled as he rode away.

"Brat? I like Pipsqueak better." Jean said.

"Shut it, horse face." Kara said. Jean glared at her. She was the only one calling him that, but now eren was starting to call him that.

"Will you stop calling me that. You got the suicidal maniac calling me it now." Jean growled. Kara tapped her chin with a smirk on her face.

"Hmm. No!" Kara said. Jean clenched his jaw as the two glared at each other. Conny had his hands behind his head as he and Sasha watch the two.

Later that day. Kara and Jean were patrolling the streets together. Sasha and Conny were on the walls with Eren and others to clean the cannons.

"Conny is joining the Survey Corps and so is Sasha." Kara said.

"Why did they change their minds?" Jean said.

"We missed a speach from Eren last night. They were inspired. Some others are joining as well." Kara said. Jean continued walking "Jean." Jean looked at her. "Are you still thinking of joining the Scouts." Jean shrugged.

"I don't know. I don't think I could handle our bickering and I want to get as far as I can from Eren." Jean said. He turned to walk away, but she grabbed his arm.

"Jean. If you want to join the MPs that's fine. I won't stop you. I just won't go with you. My father has friends among them and he is still out there. I'm not safe with them. But honestly. I think your better with the Scouts. And I hate to be seperated from you and loose our friendship." Kara said. Jean turned and came up to her so they were inches apart.

"Give me a good reason to join the Scouts with you." Jean said. His face was inches from her. He had grown since they joined the Cadet Corps. Kara felt his breath on her lips.

"Jean. I.." A gold light came from behind the wall. Jean turned his head and Kara's eyes widen. "What was that?"

"Colossal Titan spotted!" A Garrison yelled from the roofs.

"Damnit." Jean said as they ran towards the street. A huge exposion comes and rocks went flying. Jean tackled Kara to the ground and put his body over hers as rocks hit the ground. Kara heard yells and looked up as a hand knocked off the cannons on the wall, but her eyes widened at another site. There was a huge hole in the wall. Five years they gone without the Colossal attacking and now he just breached the wall in Trost.

"Jean!" Kara yelled, pointing. Jean looked up and swore. Jean got to his feet and pulled Kara to hers.

"We'll talk about this later. We need to get to HQ!" Jean said. Kara was still staring at the hole. "Kara. Come on." Kara shook her head and both took off running towards HQ! Citizens were already starting to evacuate.

In HQ. Kara ran towards the gas to fill up. Her heart was racing. She heard a Captain barking orders but blocked it out.

"Kara? Sasha said, running over.

"You guys okay? I know you were on the wall when the Colossal attacked." Kara said.

"We're fine. Samuel got injured." Conny said as he joined. Marco and Jean were talking.

"Just one day shy of joining the MPs and this happens." Marco sighed. Jean was watching Kara. She was relaxed and not scared after the shock of the Colossal breaking through the wall. She didn't look his way, but she felt his eyes on her. "Jean. Did you hear me?" Jean looked at Marco.

"Sorry. What did you say?" Jean asked. Marco looked in the direction Kara was standing and put two and two together.

"I think you should tell Kara your feelings if we make it this out alive." Marco said. Jean's checks flushed.

"I.. I.." Jean started.

"Jean. We know you like her. You two been dancing around each other since before we graduated. Just tell her. Or you afraid of bringing her father's wrath down on you?" Marco asked with a smirk as Jean's face paled. He put his hands to his face.

"That won't help if I'm in the Scouts liking Captain Levi's daughter." Jean said. Marco chuckled at his friend.

"Hey." Jean looked at Kara. "We're heading outside." Kara headed out with Sasha. Jean watched her go.

"Your looking at her again." Marco teased. Jean shoved Marco away from him

Outside. Kara stood between Jean and Sasha as they stood to attention.

"I want everyone split into four squadrons, as practiced. All squadrons are responsible for supply-running, message relay, and enemy combat under the command of the Garrison Regiment. The intercept Squadron will be taking the Vanguard. Cadets will be taking the middle guard, led by the support squad. Rear guard will go to the elites. I expect you all to man your posts knowing the Advance Team has been wiped out." Elite Guard said. Kara felt her face pale as gasps fill the air. Jean clenched his fists. "That's right; the outer gate is history. The Titans are in. This means the Armored Titan is likely to reappear. If and when he does, the inner gate will also be history." Whispers rang through the crowd. Kara looked at her feet.

'Pull it together Kara. You want to be a scout. You knew you would be facing the Titans eventually to kill them.' Kara thought.

"Quiet!" Everyone goes silent and Kara looked up. "Right! Those in the vanguard, be ready! The whole area is well-nigh saturated. Your mission is a very simple one: Defend the wall til the evacuation's done! Now. Be aware, all of you, that desertion is punishable by execution! If it comes to it, lay down your live! Dismissed!"

"Sir!" Everyone yelled. Cadets go running. Daz and Jean were knealing on the ground. Daz was actually puking and Christa and Kara knelt next to him.

"Why'd this have to happen now?" Jean whispered. Marco and Berthold stood with Jean. "I was so close to having Kara tell me why to join the Scouts and not the MPs before the Colossal broke through." Jean hears Daz throwing up more as Kara rubbed his back

"Your gonna be alright?" Christa said. Daz looks at her and pukes again. Kara saw Jean watching and shook her head. Jean clenched his jaw and started walking away. Kara wanted to go after him but Daz was still puking badly. Cadets were crying in the corners. Jean wasn't watching where he was going and ran into Eren. Jean pushes Eren out of the way.

"Move it!" Jean said. Kara and Mikasa look towards the boys. Kara leaves Daz with Christa. Eren grabbed Jean's arm.

"What the hell, man? What's wrong with you?" Eren asked.

"What kinda question is that? We're all about to be Titan chow. You expect me to sing you a happy little song?" Jean asked, getting in Eren's face. "You're loving this, aren't you, you little psycho? Course you are. Y're whole life's aspiration is to be eaten! I was one day shy of deciding if I wanted to join the MPs or the Scouts!"

"Jean. Get.." Eren started.

"No! Not all of us are suicidal!" Jean said.

"Damn it! Shut up for a second!" Eren said, slamming Jean into a column as Kara and Mikasa got close to them. "We trained for this! What do you think the last three years were about?" Jean gasped. He looked over Eren and saw Kara watching them. He looks at Eren. "We sruvived. We stared death in the face and we lived. Not everyone can say that, can they? Some people couldn't take it and either rand or were thrown out. Hell, some people died, but not us! Am I right? We powered through for three years! What's one more day?" Cadets that were crying, looked up. You can do this, Jean. Alright? You can decide where you want to go when this is all over." Eren let Jean go. Jean gritted his teeth. Jean stepped away.

"On your feet, Daz. Stop bawling." Jean ordered.

"Um. Okay." Daz said. Jean walked up to Kara.

"You know he's right." Kara said.

"Tch." Jean said. Ian comes over.

"Kara Ackerman. Mikasa Ackerman, you're with me." Ian said. Kara an Mikasa turned towards Ian. "You've been assigned to the rear guard on special orders. Let's get moving." Ian said. Kara's eyes widen at his words. Rear guard?

"But sir! Kara and I are cadets! We'll slow everyone down." Mikasa said.

"She's right." Kara said.

"What?" Eren said.

"You're not being asked for a self-evaluation here. The mass exodus is falling apart. We need as many elite soldiers as possible to get things back on track." Ian said. Mikasa goes to argue but Eren stops her.

"Rear guard and elite squad?" Jean said, raising an eyebrow.

"Well we both were top of our class. From what I heard we almost tied for first." Kara said, looking at him. Jean was staring at her. "You be safe out there."

"You as well." Jean said. Kara went to walk away. "Kara." Kara turned. Jean grabbed her arm, pulling her to him, and he pressed his lips hard against hers. Kara's eyes widen. Conny and Sasha's jaws drop. Jean pulled away before she could return the kiss. Jean cave her a cocky grin. "We'll talk about this when we take back Trost." Jean takes off, leaving Kara standing in shock. Kara shook her head.

"You bastard. You don't just kiss me and go running off!" Kara yelled. Marco chuckled.

'He's got balls.' Marco thought.

"I wasn't expecting that." Sasha said.

"She's gonna kick his ass when she gets her hands on him." Conny said.

"Ackerman!" Ian yelled as he and Mikasa turned to her. Kara turned with red tint on her checks. Mikasa was smirking as they walked.

"You and horseface." Mikasa said.

"Shut it." Kara grumbled as they hook onto the roofs and go flying up on the roofs. They ran across the roofs.

An hour later. They were walking across the roof. So far no Titans were in the area and people were evacuating steadily. A scream fills the air. Mikasa turned.

"What is it?" Kara asked, stopping next to her.

"That sounded like Armin." Mikasa said with worry on her face. Kara looked back where she knew the others were. Jean was somewhere out there.

'Jean. You better live so I can kick your ass. Please be safe all of you.' Kara thought.
