Chapter 45
Party Trouble
The night of the party. Levi stood at the window of his office. The carriage that was supposed to take Jean and Kara to Wall Siena had pulled up. He was on edge. He didn't like the idea of sending his daughter to her grandparents, but Jean was going with. Both had come back late the other night with Sasha and Conny after a shopping trip. At lunch. Levi had told Kara to find him after she was ready to go.
"Will you stop pacing, shorty. Kara will be fine. Nile said he would be there and keep an eye on Kara and Jean for you." Hange said. A knock on the door came and Levi turned to see Kara enter, carrying a cloak on her arm. Her blue dress was long sleeved with a round neck. It hung off her shoulders, showing some battle scars. It hugged her waiste with the corset in the back. It fell to the floor. Kara's long blond hair was curled and hung over her shoulder. "Oh, sweet child, you look gorgeous." Hange ran over and hugged Kara. Kara returned the hug.
"It's not much is it?" Kara asked.
"You look like a regular kid in a dress that will do for a rich party." Levi said. Kara smiled.
"Thank you, dad." Kara said. She came up and hugged him, kissing his check.
"How the ribs doing?" Hange said.
"Sore. Sasha didn't tighten the straps to much. I'll take it easy, Commander." Kara said. Sasha had helpped Kara get ready for the night.
"I got a carriage for you to take you to Wall Siena. Jean has money to rent a inn room if you don't want to come back. You don't have to stay at the party long. If it gets to much. Jean will get you out. You are taking a weapon?" Levi asked. Kara brought her arm up and lifted the sleeve. A dagger was strapped to her arm. "I don't trust your grandmother."
"I don't either, father. I trust my grandfather. He had kindness in him." Kara said. Levi nodded.
"I'll walk you out." Levi said.
Jean looked in the mirror as he adjusted a tie. Kara had found him a decent suit and tie for the event. He hadn't seen the dress she picked out.
"Wow. Horse Face actually cleane up nice." Eren said as he sat with the others.
"Suicidal Maniac. I will punch you..." Jean growled, as he turned on Eren.
"Please no fighting. I'm not in the mood to break you two up." Kara said, coming into the room with Levi. Jean's jaw dropped. She looked stunning to him.
"Kara. You look beautiful." Mikasa said.
"Thank you." Kara said, blushing. Jean came over and pulled her to him and pressed a kiss to her forehead.
"More like drop dead gorgeous." Jean said. Kara smiled.
"We'll expect you back tomorrow night. We got new recruits coming in and we need you two to train." Hange said.
"Yes, Commander." Kara and Jean said. Levi eyed Jean.
"Keep an eye on her." Levi said.
"Yes, Captain." Jean said. Kara gave her father and Hange a hug and walked up to Jean. Jean took the cloak from Kara and helped her put it on. Jean held out his arm and Kara took it. Jean and Kara stepped outside. Jean helped Kara into the carriage and he got in behind her. The carriage pulled away as Jean sat next to Kara. Jean took her hand and she looked at him. "I never been to a rich person's party." Kara smiled.
"Neither have I. Guess we'll learn as we go." Kara said. Jean leaned over.
"Though I want to rip that dress off you. You look beautiful." Jean whispered. Kara flushed.
"You look handsome yourself." Kara said. Jean pulled her close to his side. Kara laid her head on Jean's shoulder. He kept his arm wrapped around her as they looked out the window of the carriage. Jean was on edge and knew Kara was scared and nervous.
They soon were in Wall Siena and arrived at a huge mansion. They stopped in front of the doors. Jean got out first. Kara had the hood of her cloak up. Jean held out his hand and Kara put her hand in his. He helped her out of the carriage. They looked at the mansion.
"I knew they were rich, but not this rich." Kara whispered.
"And your father gave it all up to marry your mother?" Jean said.
"Looks like it. Let's get this over with." Kara said. Jean held out his arm and Kara took it. She lifted up her dress with her free hand and they climbed the steps towards the mansion. Jean kept Kara close to his side as they entered the Mansion. It was beautiful inside. Kara took off her cloak and handed it to a butler that was taking jackets and cloaks.
"Where are we going?" Jean asked.
"Let's walk around and we'll eventually find where we are needed." Kara said. Jean took her hand and they walked down the hall. Servers walked around with glasses of wine. Kara grabbed a glass. If she was going to survive this party, she needed alchol in her. Jean grabbed a glass. They stood off to the side as they watched people talk. Kara's dress was not out of place. Kara saw others wearing the same dressed.
"Kara." Nile said, coming over. Kara hugged him. "You look lovely."
"Hi Nile. Thank you." Kara said. Jean and Nile shook hands.
"I heard both of you are new Squad Leads. Congradulations. I'm not surprised with you Kara." Nile said.
"I didn't get it because of the Captain. Hange knows I'm good at leading a team along with Jean." Kara said. Nile nodded.
"Kara." Kara turned to see her Grandfather, but no Grandmother. "I'm glad you could make it."
"Thank you, Grandpa." Kara said.
"You don't have to stay all night. Just stay for supper. I won't make you stay if you don't want to stay long." Her grandfather said. Jean and Kara looked at each other.
"Food sounds good." Jean said. Kara nodded. Music started as the Grandfather went to linger with unfamiliar faces. Kara took a long drink of her wine. It was a rich wine that she never had, but it was delicious.
"Want to dance?" Jean asked as couples head out to the dance floor. Kara nodded as Jean took her hand and led her out on the dance floor. Jeana and Kara turned to face each other on the dance floor. Kara wrapped her arms around Jean's neck. Jean and Kara let the music take them away from the stares. Kara saw people watching them, wondering who she was. "Just ignore them. Focus on me." Kara looked up into Jean's eyes. He gave her a cocky smile. Jean pressed his forehead against Kara's. She closed her eyes and let the music pull her in, ignoring the cold stares.
"Thank you for coming with. I wouldn't have come if they didn't let you." Kara said. Jean grabbed her chin.
"I would of came whether they let me or not. The Captain wouldn't have let you go without me anyway." Jean said. He pressed his lips to hers and they kissed. They pulled apart. "Let's get this over with and go to the inn." Kara pulled him into another dance.
"I'm fine with dancing the night away." Kara said with a smile, earning a chuckle from Jean. Jean swung her out and pulled her back in. He dipped her making her gasp. Jean pulled her up so their noses were touching.
"We have to tell your father soon about our engagement." Jean said. Kara hummed.
"I know. Don't worry. He won't kill you. I think he likes you more then the others at times." Kara said.
"I think I'll still keep close to the door when we tell him. Let's wait a few years to marry. I know my mother will be happy." Jean said. Kara chuckled and kissed his nose as the music stops and everyone claps. Jean and Kara join the clapping, not taking their eyes off each other.
"Everyone. Dinner will be served in the hall. Please start heading that way." The aunouncer said. Jean and Kara walk towards the hall with the others. Kara felt eyes on her, but when she looked, everyone was looking everyone but her.
'Stop, Kara. Your jumpy.' Kara thought. Jean and Kara sat with Nile and his wife Marie. Marie hugged Kara, who asked about the children. Kara heard that both Erwin and Nile were in love with Marie, but Erwin joined the Survey Core and wanted to stay single and she ended up marrying Nile.
"They are good. All three getting big." Marie said. Kara smiled. She was happy to know at least two familiar faces in the crowd. There were a lot of Military Police. A man leaned forward as food was sat out on the table in front of them.
"I heard you both survived the reclaiming of Wall Maria." The man said. Kara grabbed a cup of wine from a waitress.
"We did." Jean said.
"Can we hear?" A woman asked. The ones that were around them looked at Kara and Jean.
"Might as well." Kara said. Jean nodded. Jean told his part of helping with taking down the Armored. Kara listened with interest. Kara told her take.
"So you saw Erwin before he died?" Marie asked. She looked like she was going to cry.
"Yes. He died doing what he loved doing. He died a hero." Kara said. Marie gave her a smile.
"Thank you." Marie said. Nile gave her a nod.
"Is the Scouts rebuiling?" A woman asked.
"We got recruits coming in tomorrow." Kara said. Jean nodded.
"That's good." A man said. Kara was impressed how much some people in the Walls still respected the Survey Corps. Jean rested a hand on her leg as they ate. The food was delicious. Kara was on her fourth glass of wine. Surprisenly it was effecting her. Jean leaned over.
"Trying to get tipsy." Jean whispered. Kara hummed with a smile.
"Nope. Not effecting me." Kara said. Jean chuckled.
After dinner. Kara slipped into the powder room to use the bathroom. There were a few ladies in there. They looked down on her over their noses. Kara held her head high as she disappeared to use toilet. Kara came out to find the girls gone. Kara stood in front of the mirror. She did look pretty.
'Thank you Sasha. I owe you one for tonight.' Kara thought. She goes to wash her hands. The door opened and closed. Kara finished and turned. She stopped. The Grandmother was standing there. This was the first time she had seen her that night.
"Hello, Grandma. Wonderful party you have tonight." Kara said with a polite smile. The grandmother looked at her and there was no kindness in her eyes.
"You know. You should of been a boy not a girl." The Grandmother said. Kara sighed.
"I heard enough of that from my father. I don't need to hear it again." Kara said. She put her arms behind her back and pulled up the sleeve to her weapon. She didn't pull it out. A flash of anger ran through the Grandmother's eyes. Kara was starting to regret coming to the bathroom. She wanted to use it before they left for the inn. Jean was talking to Nile.
"If your mother didn't have a difficulty pregnancy she probably could of had more." The Grandmother said. Kara laughed. "What's so funny."
"Marcus always said the same thing and blamed me for everything. I almost was killed because of his abuse. Now I get where he gets it from. Least Grandfather is nicer then you." Kara said. The Grandmother came over to her. Kara moved out her way. Kara's arm got grabbed.
"You act like a spoiled kid. You should of been beat more. Not living with the Survey Corps." The Grandmother said. Kara pulled her arm free.
"I'm happier there then I would of here. Thank you for the invite, but we'll be leaving." Kara said. She went to get away and felt a slash on her hand. Kara gritted her teeth in pain and turned to see the Grandmother holding a dagger, a smirk on her face. She walked up to her.
"Marcus couldn't finish the job. Maybe this time. I will." The Grandmother said. Kara grabbed the knife out of her Grandmothers hand as she felt her body going weak. There was a bluish substance on the knife.
'Dad was right. Something felt off.' Kara thought. "That poison takes effect fast." Kara pushed the door opened and nearly fell out of the room, clutching the knife. She was getting weak and weak.
Jean was standing talking to Nile when Kara nearly fell out of the hall, clutching a knife in her hand.
"Pipsqueak." Jean knelt next to her with Nile. Nile helped Jean get her up. The grandfather came over. "What's wrong?"
"Poisoned. By... Grandma." Kara whispered, holding up the knife. Jean gritted his teeth. The grandfather turned on the grandmother who came out smirking.
"You didn't. I wanted to get to know her before I died. You just had to side with Marcus on everything." The Grandfather said.
"Jean. Get her to the hospital. It's not far from here. I'll send one of my men to get Levi." Nile ordered.
"The knife... Its got... what poison she gave me." Kara whispered as blackness took her. Jean caught her before she hit her head.
"Don't touch that. Let the nurses know." Nile ordered. Marie looked worried as Jean picked her up bridal style and carried her out of the mansion and to the hospital.
Levi looked out the window. He had a bad feeling. He hoped Kara and Jean were having a good night.
The door burst open and Hange and a MP ran in. Hange looked pale and Levi felt his blood run cold.
"What is it?" Levi said.
"Kara was poisoned by the Grandmother. Jean's taking her to the hopsital. They are there now." Hange said. Levi was out the door before Hange was done. Levi knew it was a bad idea to send her there. He wasn't gonna blame Jean. The grandmother must of waited till she was alone.
AN: I'll leave it there. Till next time.
