AN: As always, thank you so much for the reviews. I read them multiple times a day. You are all awesome!

"Hey, kiddo. How are those reports coming?" Dean asked as he stepped inside for a drink.

Kate crinkled her nose. "I'm working on them."

He ruffled her hair. "Keep sassing me and I'll make you sit in that chair."

Kate pushed his hands away. "Sorry, sass is part of who I am."

Dean snorted and told her to keep working.

Kate sighed heavily and went back to the books that Sam had given her. She had found an entire section on burns and some of the pictures were pretty gross. She couldn't imagine how badly it would hurt for those that had burns covering their body. She looked at her arm and although it was sore sometimes, it healed quickly. She wrote a note down in her journal and set it to the side. She wrote a page front and back about types of burns, complications and how to treat them. She knew that the report was to make a point and get her to think but she found it interesting. She took the paper and showed it to Sam.

Sam looked over it and smiled. "I think you did a good job. Did you learn anything?"

Kate nodded. "I got really lucky and I know how serious burns are now." She toed the rug and chewed on her fingers.

"What is it?" Sam asked.

Kate blushed. "I had an idea."

"Uh oh." Sam said as he sat down.

"I don't think it is bad but I wanted to run it by you first."

Sam leaned back. "I'm all ears."

Kate sighed. "I know that no one is going to want me to become a hunter but I kind of already am. I know too much. When I was reading about the burn stuff I thought about how you helped me heal from that and how I helped you when you got hurt. What if I could be a healer?"

"You want to go to med school?"

Kate shifted. "I don't know. If I could learn more stuff, I could help if someone got hurt on a hunt. John isn't always around and I think it is a good idea. Then I could help but not be on the front line."

Sam thought about it. "Seeing people hurt can be difficult. Being the person that renders first aid takes a lot of grit."

Kate looked at him. "Seeing you in pain after you got hurt was really hard but being able to help you made it easier to deal with."

"I don't think you should pull pain like that." Sam added.

Kate rolled her eyes. "I don't always have to. I can learn how to do stitches and stuff."

Sam smiled. "How are you going to stitch some body up unless they are holding still?"

Kate rolled her eyes again. "I can put them to sleep."

Sam sat forward and touched her elbow. "I think that is an interesting idea and I don't see the harm in bringing it up as long as you abide but whatever guidelines you are given."

Kate grinned and kissed Sam on the forehead. "Thanks Sam!"

Sam shook his head and got back up to finish what he was doing. He felt guilty for wanting to go to college. He didn't want to leave Dean or Kate but he needed to do something for himself. College was just a couple years and they could visit.

Kate cracked one of the books open and found the pages that Sam had marked for her. She didn't like that as much as the other section but jotted down some information about antibiotic resistance and some other stuff about pain medication. She wrote a page about medication misuse and hoped that it was enough.

Bobby looked up from a book to see Kate standing in the doorway of the study. "You can come in."

Kate walked in and handed him the papers. "I can write more on the medication one if I need to."

"You got these done pretty fast." He said, skimming the pages.

Kate shrugged. "I found it kind of interesting."

"Are you going to touch my med cabinet again?" Bobby asked.

Kate shook her head. "No sir!"

He smiled and handed her the papers. "Then I'd say this did what it was supposed to."

Kate took the papers back. "I had an idea I wanted to run by you and Dean. I ran it by Sam and he said it may be okay."

Bobby raised a brow. "What would that be?"

Kate grinned. "Let me find Dean first. I promise it isn't bad."

Bobby chuckled. He had witnessed a long string of ideas that she deemed not bad and was interested to see what she thought of this time.

Kate found Dean exactly where she assumed he would be. "Does Lacy get jealous of baby?"

Dean shut the hood and smirked. "What do you want?"

Kate held out the papers and waited while he read them.

Dean nodded in approval. "Keep these as a reminder."

Kate took the papers back and bounced on her toes. "I have an idea."

Dean looked at her. "That doesn't sound good."

Kate frowned. "Why does everyone act like it is a bad idea."

He tweaked her nose. "Because you are the queen of bad ideas."

Kate put her hands on her hips. "I could always just not tell you what the idea is."

Dean raised a brow. "Do you want a replay of last night?"

Kate squeaked. "No! Will you just listen so I can tell you and then you can make all the snarky comments you want."

Dean grinned. "I can't promise to keep the comments to myself."

Kate stuck her tongue out. "Just remember that next time I say something." She held her hand out and pulled him toward the house.

Dean took off his boots and followed Kate into Bobby's study. "Okay so what is this idea of yours?"

Bobby sat his book down and put his elbows on the desk.

Kate took a deep breath. "Please hold arguments until the end."

Bobby chuckled.

"When I was doing research about burns, I realized that I liked learning about that stuff. I know that you guys don't want me to hunt and I understand that but I'm going to wind up tagging along. What if I learned about all kinds of injuries and stuff and became a healer?" She put a hand up to silence Dean. "I don't have to use my ability to pull pain unless necessary. I mean what if you just need stitches or a splint. I don't want to just sit on my hands. This is a way for me to stay out of the way but still feel as though I am part of the team."

Dean looked at Bobby and then back to Kate. "Can I speak now?"

Kate grinned. "Yes."

Dean rubbed his face. "You are still a kid. I don't think doing stitches is in your wheelhouse."

Kate sighed. "I think I have been out of my wheelhouse for a while. When you come back and you are injured, I feel really bad and worried. Knowing how to mend some injuries will make me feel better but could also be useful."

Bobby spoke. "I don't see the harm in you learning some things but you have a tendency to go off the deep end with things."

"I will stick to the guidelines. This is something I really want to do and I learned my lesson on the wrong way to handle injuries." Kate said and hung her head.

Dean sighed. "Mini Medic."

Kate looked at him and rolled her eyes. "You can't call me that."

Dean grinned back. "Why not?"

"Cuz I will hurt you." Kate said.

Dean laughed. "Wait, the first rule of being a doctor is do no harm... right?"

Kate crinkled her nose. "I'm not a doctor so I can still harm you."

Dean smiled. "Fair enough. I'll talk to dad and see where would be a good place to start learning about that stuff. I can show you the stuff I know."

Kate bounced on her toes and grinned. She darted out of the office and went back to the books on the table.

Dean rubbed his head. "I honestly never know what she is going to say or do."

Bobby chuckled. "I'm right there with you. Although, I wouldn't pick on her too much. Next time you need stitches she may be holding the needle."

Dean smirked. "You have a point." He was warming up to the idea. Studying would keep Kate out of trouble and they did need a medic at times. John was the go to but he wasn't around much. He just hoped that she handled the information appropriately. He dialed John's number and walked outside.

"Hey, son." John said in a tired voice.

"Hey, dad. I can make it quick. I just had a few questions." Dean said and told him about Kate wanting to learn medic skills.

John perked up a little. "I think that is a wonderful idea."

Dean paused. "Really?"

"Yes. You and Sam know basic first aid but she could really soak up what ever information you give her. Let me find the number of one of my buddies and I'll send it to you."

Dean hadn't expected John to be so enthusiastic. "Okay, uh. Thanks, dad."

John hung up and sent a message several minutes later.

Dean dialed the number and waited for the man to pick up. He wondered if he would need a cover story or if he knew about the supernatural.

The man picked up. "Dean, John just let me know that you'd be calling."

Dean sighed. That was easy. "Uh, Yes, sir. Did he say why?"

"He said he had a kid wanting to be a medic."

Dean silently cursed John for not telling him how to approach the subject. "Dad really didn't say what your name was."

The man laughed. "John just calls me Bradley. He and I were in Vietnam together. I see he still isn't one for words."

Dean snorted. "No, sir."

"So which one of you boys wants to be a medic?"

Dean groaned. "It is actually our little sister."

Bradley chuckled. "How little are we talking?"

"Almost 11 but thinks she is 21." Dean said.

"I know what your dad does. Is that why she is wanting to learn?"

Dean reluctantly said yes.

"Hmm. Okay. I can show her some things. I'm not too far away from your Uncle Bobby's so I can pop over there. I haven't seen you boys since you were maybe 6."

Dean didn't remember meeting a Bradley. "That was some time ago for sure."

Bradley discussed a time that worked for him and for Kate and said he would stop by the next day.

Dean went back in the house and told Bobby about Bradley before telling Kate.

"I've met the guy. He's good people." Bobby said.

Dean called Kate to Bobby's office.

Kate was hesitant but stepped in. "What is it?"

Dean smirked at her. "Why are you walking around like you did something?"

Kate scrunched her eye brows. "You told me to come in here. I'm here."

Dean ruffled her hair. "I spoke to dad about training you to become a medic."

Kate grimaced.

Dean lifted her chin. "He was excited.. which I didn't know was an emotion he could feel. He set me up with one of his war buddies and Mr. Bradley is going to stop by tomorrow to show you a few things."

Bobby covered his ears at the high pitched squeal.

Kate jumped and hugged Dean around the neck. "Thank you!"

Dean blushed. "You are welcome."

Kate let go and landed on her feet. "I have to tell Sam!"

Dean chuckled when he heard a loud "oof" from her slamming into Sam. "You'd think eventually she would stop trying to kill people when she hugged them."

Bobby smiled. "She will get the hang of it."

The next day Bradley pulled up to the salvage yard. He knocked on the door and was greeted by a very excited Kate. "Hi, you must be Katelyn."

Kate blushed. "Just Kate."

Bradley shook her hand and looked up at Dean behind her. "Boy, you look just like your dad."

Dean smiled. "Yeah, I get that a lot."

They led him into the house and Bobby said his hellos from his desk.

Dean stayed in the kitchen while Bradley went over the basics with Kate. He figured he could use a refresher course as well.

"Okay, how do I do stitches?" Kate asked.

Bradley raised a brow. "That may be too advanced."

Kate schooled her expression. "If I learn now I can practice."

Bradley smiled at her and grabbed a kit from his bag. "I can show you which kind you need to use for different types of lacerations but you can use a continuous line or you can tie the ends in a knot and cut it each time you do a new one." He slowly showed her the two different types.

She tried to duplicate the stiches on a piece of cloth.

"That's not bad at all. Skin is different than cloth. I can bring you the stuff that med students practice with." He grabbed a banana from the fruit bowl. "Try one of these. With cloth you can put your hand under it, with a person you can't do that."

Kate focused intensely in keeping her stitches uniform. She found that it was harder than she expected.

Bradley was impressed with how quickly she learned. "I think you have a natural on your hands." He said and looked at Dean.

Dean smiled. He was proud of her. He grabbed the banana and looked at it. "I think it will live."

Kate took it back and peeled it. "You could be my test dummy."

Dean laughed. "No thanks."

Bradley showed her a few more things and said he would drop off a box of stuff the next day.

Kate stayed at the table reading over the information that Bradley had given her. She used all of the thread from the suture kit and got lost in the endless pages of the text books.

Bobby found her in the kitchen. "I'm glad you found something you are interested in but you might want to start on those chores."

Kate snapped her head up. "I'm sorry."

Bobby smiled. "I'm not fussing at you."

Kate smiled back and gathered up the books. She took them up stairs and found Sam.

"Are you a doctor yet?" Sam asked with a smile.

Kate grinned. "Nope, not yet. What are you going to be?"

Sam frowned. "I don't know. College takes four years and then you can go to law school or med school or whatever school you want."

Kate put a hand on Sam's shoulder. "I can be a doctor so when Dean gets hurt I can fix him up and you can be a lawyer to bail him out of jail when he does stupid stuff."

Sam grinned. "I think you might be onto something."

Kate gave his arm a squeeze and got started on her chores. Bobby had given her extra things to do but she didn't mind. Her brain was busy with all of the new information she had learned. She made quick work of cleaning the entire bathroom and hallway. She dusted and mopped.

Bobby called them down for dinner. "Did you get your stuff done?" He asked.

Kate nodded. "I did a few extra things too."

Bobby patted her back. "Thank you."

Kate shrugged. "I feel bad for what I did."

Bobby steered her toward the kitchen. "You have been forgiven for that but thank you for taking initiative to do the extra chores."

Kate hugged him. "Can I have chicken to practice stitching?"

Bobby chuckled. "Don't go wasting food. Bradley said that he would bring stuff over tomorrow."

Kate skipped to the table. "Couldn't hurt to ask."

Kate had school the next day and was nervous about returning. People knew she had gotten sick and she didn't want to talk about it.

Ellie met her at Sam's car. She gave her a big hug. "I'm so happy to see you."

Kate was happy to see her too. She couldn't tell Ellie about the burn. She was surprised that everyone was nice to her. No one was rude or asked too many questions. Even her teacher seemed happy to see her.

At lunch one of the boys sat down beside her. "We were beginning to think you weren't coming back."

Kate blushed. "I wasn't gone that long."

The boy winked and left the table.

"Oh my god, he likes you." Ellie said in a high pitched voice.

Kate's mouth dropped open. "No, he was just being nice."

Ellie grinned. "Because he likeeeeeeeeees you."

Kate covered her face. The boy's name was Taylor and he was always nice to her. He was on Ellie's brother's baseball team so they had hung out a little. She never considered the possibility that he may like her. Boy's weren't even on her radar. She was so focused on other things but he was kind of cute.

Over the week, Taylor started to stick around more. He was a cool person. He liked a lot of the same music that Kate did and he wasn't annoying like some of the other guys.

Kate's birthday was right around the corner and it made her a little sad. Each new milestone after her dad's death was bitter sweet. "I was thinking. Maybe for my birthday I could just have a few friends over or we could go to the park. I don't want a big party."

Dean frowned. "Not feeling it this year?"

Kate shook her head. "I don't want to invite a bunch of people. Maybe just my two best friends."

Dean raised a brow. "Ellie and who?"

Kate blushed. "Taylor."

Dean shrugged. "That would be okay. We can do whatever you want to do."

Kate smiled. Dean didn't know Taylor was a boy but Kate didn't see why that would matter.

Dean was under the car tuning something and would be busy for a while.

Kate told him that she was going to check the mail and walked down to the mail box. She sifted through the letters as she walked. She rarely got mail but always checked. She held up one envelope and froze. Her heart raced. She took off sprinting to the house and busted through the door. She dropped the other mail on the couch and ran up the stairs.

Sam spun around as Kate swung the door open. He was wide eyed and startled.

Kate held out the white envelope. "Look!"

Sam took the letter and frowned. "It is from Stanford."

"Why are you sad?" Kate asked.

"Stanford is a prestigious school. There is no way I got in." He set the envelope down and went back to his book.

Kate snatched it from his desk. "You don't know that unless you open it."

Sam gave her a small smile. "It is okay."

Kate looked at the envelope. "What if I open it?"

Sam reached for it. "Kate, there is no point."

Kate pulled it back. "Sammm. Come on. Okay, so what if you don't get into this school? You can try again. How silly would you feel if you did get in and just ignored the letter and never knew."

Sam tapped his pencil on his desk. "If I am depressed for the rest of the day it is your fault."

Kate grinned. "Okay."

Sam opened the envelope and unfolded the letter. He shut his eyes, not wanting to see the rejection letter. He opened one eye and glanced at the words. His eyes flew open and he sat forward.

"What is it?" Kate tried to read over his shoulder.

Sam was stunned. He handed her the letter and put his face in his hands.

Kate jumped up and down. "Sam! You got in!" She punched his arm. "I told you!"

Sam rubbed his arm. "I don't know how."

Kate furrowed her brows. "Because you are awesome."

Sam frowned.

Kate hugged him. "Are you worried about your dad?"

Sam nodded. "I want to be excited but I didn't think I would get this far. What am I going to do?"

Kate sighed. "I could compel him to be happy for you."

Sam laughed. "While I appreciate that, maybe don't do that."

Kate smiled. "Who cares what he thinks right now. You got into freakin' Stanford University."

Sam ruffled her hair. "I guess I did." He was still processing. He was happy but things like that didn't happen for people like him.

Kate bounced from foot to foot. "You need to tell Dean and Bobby."

Sam sat back and sighed.

Kate pulled on his arm. "Come on. They will be happy for you. If Dean gets grumpy I will smack him for you."

Sam smiled. "Now that you can do."

Kate went to find Dean and Sam found Bobby. They corralled them to the kitchen and had them sit down.

Sam was nervous and antsy. He didn't know how they were going to react.

"What did you two do?" Dean asked lightly.

Kate glared at him.

Sam handed the letter over to Dean so he and Bobby could read it.

"Boy, I knew you could do it." Bobby said and got up to clap Sam on the back. "You are the smartest person I know."

Sam grinned but looked to Dean.

Dean slowly read the letter. He was proud of his little brother but Stanford was in California. He jumped when Kate slapped him. "What was that for?"

Kate stomped her foot. "I told him if you got grumpy I'd smack you."

Dean looked at her. "I'm not grumpy."

"Dean this is exciting!"

He smiled at Sam and handed him the letter. "I always knew you were a nerd."

Kate smacked him again.

"Kid, we are about to have issues."

"Hmm, I think it was you that said sometimes you have to chose the lesser of the two evils and I feel less bad about slapping you then I would feel if you made Sam feel bad for something that is awesome." Kate said.

Bobby laughed.

"That is not what that lesson was about." He said but smiled. "Sammy I am so proud of you. My baby brother is going to Stanford." He said as he stood up.

They decided to go to the diner and celebrate.

Sam was on cloud nine. He could forget about John for a bit and just enjoy his accomplishment.

After they ate, they ordered dessert for everyone. It was a celebration after all.

Kate nearly dropped her fork when Taylor and his family walked in. Her face turned red when she made eye contact with him.

Sam looked at her with concern. He looked over his shoulder and hid a smirk.

Kate excused herself and went to speak to him about hanging out with her and Ellie for her birthday.

Taylor immediately said yes and his parents were fine with it.

Dean glared at Kate when she walked back. "Who is that?"

Kate mumbled his name with a mouthful of pie.

"Taylor is a boy?" He hissed.

Kate slid down in her seat. "He is my friend."

"When you asked if Taylor and Ellie could come over, I thought you meant two girl... friends."

Kate sat up. "Deannn, he is just a friend. Please can he at least go to the park with us?"

Dean smirked. "Fine but if he so much as looks at you wrong I'm kicking his ass."

Kate rolled her eyes.

Bobby patted her shoulder. "I'm with Dean on this one."

Dean teased her a bit, enjoying that she had something to be teased about.

When Lacy dropped the check off at their table she leaned over and told Dean to stop being mean to Kate.

"What? You can't go behind my back." He said to Kate.

Kate shrugged. "Lacy and I are friends."

Lacy handed her a piece of candy. "Yep, so be nice to her." She said with a wink and spun around to get back to her job.

Dean rubbed his head. "I don't think I like that."

Kate slid out of her seat and patted him. "Sucks for you." She quickly walked by him and got on the other side of Sam. She waved at Taylor and went outside.

Dean shook his head and followed her outside. "Has anyone ever told you that you are a brat?"

Kate grinned. "Yeah, I take it as a compliment."

Dean tossed the keys to Sam. "Celebratory drive?"

Sam caught them and smiled. "Sure!"

Bobby tapped the top of the car. "I'll meet you back home. Don't wreck."

Dean sat down in the passenger seat and looked at Bobby. "If he wrecks baby, he's not making it back to the house."

Bobby shook his head. "You kids have fun." He stood up and tipped his hat as they left. He got in his own vehicle and leaned his head back against the head rest. Sam was going to make something out of himself. He was going to go do what Bobby had hoped he would be able to. Raising kids in the hunting lifestyle was hard and most hunters wanted better for their young. Knowing John the way he did, he knew he was going to go off and say something fool headed. He sighed, with Kate in the picture he had the added worry of her stepping in to try to protect Sam. He chuckled to himself. It would probably be a good idea to pick up an extra bottle of John's preferred drink. If not for John, then certainly for himself.
