"Are you okay?"
Katie blinked her eyes, offended by the incoming sunshine. "What?"
Dean was sitting on her bed. "I asked if you were okay."
Kate stretched. "I'm sleepy."
Dean smiled. "You have a run this morning."
Kate groaned. "I still can't go to school?"
"Nope, not today. We have stuff to figure out." Dean said gently.
Kate rolled over and sat up.
Dean studied her movements.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" She asked and stretched again.
"I guess I was a little worried that your healing ability would wear off and I was too hard on you." Dean said, sheepishly.
Kate hugged him. "I'm okay. Doesn't even hurt." She stepped back and eyed him. "That does NOT mean that I didn't learn from it."
Dean chuckled. "Don't worry. You are done with that particular part of the lesson." He personally knew how sitting down on a sore tail helped one remember a lesson, but he always felt bad when Sam or Kate had experienced that because of him. If she could avoid repeating the mistake, he didn't see any reason for her to suffer.
Kate shooed him away so she could change. "I'll be down in a minute."
Dean left and grabbed his running shoes. "Sammy, you should come with us."
Sam snorted. "No thanks."
"You are going to get out of shape." Dean teased.
Sam shrugged. "That is why I eat healthy. If you ate a vegetable every now and then you wouldn't need to run every morning."
Dean grumbled and took a sip of his coffee. "Suit yourself."
Kate bounded down the stairs and blushed when she saw Sam.
He smirked and held his arms open for a hug. "We good?"
Kate scrunched her face and mumbled, "No."
Dean grinned. "You can add your name to the list!"
Kate glared at him. "That didn't count."
Dean ruffled her hair.
Sam squeezed her. "I don't think it did either."
Kate smiled and broke the hug. She stuck her tongue out at Dean and ran out of the house.
Dean turned to Sam. "Pushover."
Sam smiled. "Proud to be."
Dean ran after Kate. "Wait for me."
Kate turned to run backwards. "Why?"
Dean raised a brow. "Because I said so."
Kate rolled her eyes and stopped running for the 5 seconds it took him to catch up. "Happy?"
Dean nudged her. "Yes."
"Do you think the healing thing will stay?" Kate asked as they jogged.
Dean shrugged. "I don't know. This is new."
"How much do you think it works with? Like could I break my arm and not feel it?" Kate wondered out loud.
Dean looked at her. "Do not go break your arm."
Kate grinned. "I wasn't going to."
Dean furrowed his brows. "That ruler seemed to hurt enough so I think if you broke your arm you'd feel it."
Kate grimaced. "It did, just not like normal. Thanks for not using your belt."
Dean chuckled. "I wasn't going to. I was trying to force Sam to step up."
Kate shoved him. "You are horrible."
"Did that get through to you?" Dean asked.
Kate nodded. "It did, still horrible."
Dean stopped running to check on some of the warding. "How did Taylor know something was wrong?"
Kate was stumped. "I don't know. I don't think he has ever done anything like that before."
Dean was trained to question everything and be weary.
Kate added. "You don't have abilities but seem to always know when I'm hiding something."
Dean smiled. "That is called experience."
"Do you ever regret agreeing to help me?" Kate asked.
Dean stopped running again. "Why would you ask that?"
Kate shrugged. "Sam is 18, you were done having to look after him. You could be free."
Dean frowned. "I don't regret it."
Kate tilted her head. "Even when I do stupid stuff?"
Dean rubbed his head. "Even then. Do you think I don't want you here?"
"No, I think you are obligated either way." Kate answered.
"Kid, I could leave you with Bobby like dad does with us. I'm not being forced to spend time with you. I stick around because I enjoy your company. I don't view you any differently that I do Sam."
"Sam is less of a pain." She said with a smile.
Dean shrugged. "Yes in some ways, in others no. He does most of the research for hunts, when he leaves I don't want to read anymore than I have to. That is what you are for."
Kate scrunched her nose. "You have a weird way of saying you love me."
Dean chuckled. "Because you know I do." He nudged her and started running again. He took a different turn than he normally did with her.
"Where are we going?"
"This is the way I run if I am alone, it is longer." Dean said.
Kate grumbled. "What if I am tired of running."
Dean picked up the pace. "Extra training is good for you."
"I read in the textbook that John's friend gave me that over training young children stunts their growth. That is why gymnasts are short." Kate said.
Dean laughed. "You sound like Sam. You aren't over training. You'll be fine."
Kate kept up the pace but her legs were beginning to burn. She supposed that was the point. By the time they made it back to Bobby's house she was genuinely tired. She laid face down on the porch and let the cool wood cool her down.
Bobby stepped outside. He gently nudged her with his foot. "Is she still alive?"
Kate giggled. "No."
He handed a bottle of water to each of them. "Missouri tracked down one of those bracelets and is going to bring it up here."
Kate liked Missouri. She rolled over onto her back. "If I wear it, will my new abilities go away?"
Bobby shrugged. "We wont know until you put it on."
She groaned. "If they do go away I am so not running that far."
Dean nudged her foot. "I do."
Kate looked at him. "Because you are a psycho."
"I've been called worse." Dean said with a smile.
"Does part of this extra training involve me kicking your butt?" Kate asked.
Dean raised his brows. "You are welcome to try."
Kate took a sip of her water. "Too tired."
Dean finished his own drink. "You still have the rest of the stuff to do."
Kate frowned. "I can do sit ups and stuff later."
Dean raised a brow. "You are doing other stuff later."
Bobby gave Kate a thumbs up and went back inside.
Taylor knew Kate wasn't going to be at school but was still sad. He had never felt as he had the day before and wasn't sure how to process it. He wanted to ask her so many questions. He thought for sure his dad would be angry that he kept calling but he was proud. Even John expressed some gratefulness for his actions.
John and Craig were able to wrap up their hunt by mid day and Craig was hooked. He felt useful and at home again. The trauma of what happened to his unit had plagued him for many years but it made sense now.
"Can I call Taylor?" Kate asked.
Dean looked at his watch. "He is probably at school."
Kate frowned. "Oh, yeah."
"He is a handy asset if he can tell when you are doing something." Dean said with a smirk.
Kate tried to sweep Dean's leg. "You can't use my friend against me."
Dean side stepped. "You can't use Lacy against me."
Kate scrunched her nose. "Deal. Speaking of Lacy, tell me about these two kids."
Dean grinned. "You'll see."
Kate eyed him wearily. "Should I be worried?"
Dean put his toes on top of hers. "Sit ups."
Kate crunched forward. "You aren't going to tell me?"
Dean counted out her sit ups. "They are little but a handful. She could use the help some days."
Kate figured two little kids couldn't be that much trouble.
##############
Kate had finished her training and chores and was half way through a stack of research about sigils and demons when she heard an unfamiliar vehicle pull into the drive way. She looked out the window and squeaked in excitement when she saw Missouri. She darted out the door and met her at her car.
Missouri opened the car door. "Oh Kate it is so nice to see you." She said and wrapped Kate in a hug.
"I didn't know if you'd get here today." Kate said.
Missouri let her go. "I drove straight through." She grabbed a small box that held the bracelet that she had gotten for Kate.
Kate took it and opened it. "This wont hurt?"
Missouri shook her head. "I put it on my own wrist to make sure."
Kate felt anxious holding it. Losing her abilities was a scary thought.
Bobby walked onto the porch and smiled when he saw his old friend. "Don't just stand out there, come in."
Missouri tsked. "I was planning on it, Bobby."
Kate walked behind Missouri into the house, still looking at the bracelet.
"Where did those two boys run off to?" Missouri asked.
Bobby cleared his throat. "They went to grab some food and pick up a couple other things." He looked at the clock. "They will be back any minute."
"And John?" She asked in an even tone.
Bobby smirked.
"That man is the most bullheaded person I have ever met." She looked toward Kate. "Oh but honey you may just beat him on that."
Kate's mouth dropped open. "Hey!"
Missouri gave her a kind smile and another hug. "You give 'em hell. They'll adjust."
Kate told Missouri about the place she went in her visions and how easily it was to come and go. She gave her every detail she could remember.
"Child, you could have easily gotten both of you stuck there." She said in response to trapping Sam with her.
Kate blushed. "I know."
"You can't be doing stuff like that." Missouri added.
Kate nodded. "I wont, ever again."
"If it is okay with Bobby, here, I can help you explore that place. You can read Gaelic now?"
Bobby handed the book and papers to Missouri. "Not only that, but she can read this code."
Missouri was impressed.
Bobby looked at Kate. "Can you still read it or was that just when you were hyped up?"
Kate looked at the book. "Yeah, it still makes sense."
"Well isn't that fantastic?" Missouri exclaimed.
"I think it has something to do with my family because I felt connected to the book. What are the chances that we found the one book in the one book store that had it?"
Missouri nodded. "This Ada you mentioned; you said she had a mark?"
Kate held up her arm and pointed to the birthmark on her wrist. "It looked really similar to this one."
Missouri took Kate's arm and gently examined the mark. She looked at the cover of the book and back at Kate's arm.
"What is it?" Bobby asked.
Missouri took one of the sheets of paper and scribbled over one of the designs on the book. She wasn't getting the result she was looking for. "Do you mind if I make an imprint on your arm, Kate?"
Kate shrugged. "Go ahead."
Missouri took her arm and pressed it firmly to the cover of the book. She picked her arm up and turned it over to show faint outlines that had been left by the grooves of the book. She turned Kate's other arm over to line up with the markings on the other.
Kate gasped. The mark on her wrist was solid but the outline was eerily similar to one of the temporary markings on her arm. "Is... is that the same?"
Bobby looked at her arms. "Well, I'll be..."
"I think it is safe to say that you were supposed to find this book." Missouri said with a smile.
"How could a birthmark do that?" Kate asked.
Missouri sighed. "When it comes to the supernatural, there is no telling."
"Was my mom like this?" Kate questioned. "I can't really ask anyone if she had the mark." She said in a sad tone.
"I'll see what I can find out, okay sweetie? Sometimes these things skip a generation. My own son doesn't have any gifts." Missouri said.
Kate was fascinated.
Bobby raised a brow. "You are restricted from some of that until you can control yourself."
Kate frowned. "Can I do stuff with Missouri helping?"
Bobby sighed. "We will see. You have a lot of trust to rebuild."
Dean clumsily opened the door, carrying food. "Oh, hi Missouri."
"Don't 'oh, hi' me. Get over here." Missouri said and crushed him in a hug.
Dean awkwardly patted her arm.
Sam got the same treatment but wasn't as freaked out by hugs.
"I wont be here when you graduate so I brought you something." Missouri said in a sweet voice. She dug around in her bag until she found the scientific calculator she had found for him.
Sam grinned. "These are expensive, aren't they?"
Missouri handed it to him. "They are unless you have people that owe you something. I know you aren't big on frills so I figured this is something you could use."
Sam hugged her. "Thank you. Whoa, it has my name on it too."
Missouri laughed. "Keeps people from running off with it."
Sam was touched. He was a practical person and the computer and calculator meant a lot to him."
Dean scoffed. "You didn't bring me anything?"
Missouri gave him a look. "Boy." She softened and smiled. "There are cookies in the passenger seat of my car that I brought just for you."
Dean pushed his chair back. "I'm just going to go get those. Do I need to get anything else out?"
Missouri chuckled. "I see you found your manners. My bag is out there too if you don't mind bringing it in as well."
Kate was amused by the back and forth between the two. Dean reacted so differently to Missouri compared to every one else. "You should come around more often."
Missouri squeezed her arm. "You just call me if that boy is harassing you."
Kate giggled and took a bite of her fries.
Bobby and Missouri left the room for his office.
Kate leaned over the table and whispered to Sam. "Those two would make a good couple."
Sam jerked his head back and looked down the hallway. "Are you crazy?"
Kate shrugged. "I'm just sayin'."
Dean came back in the house with the bag and cookies.
Sam reached for one of the cookies.
Dean smacked his hand away.
"Those are for you to share, Dean." Missouri called from Bobby's office.
Dean rolled his eyes.
"Don't roll your eyes at me." Missouri added.
Dean froze. "You know it is creepy when you do that."
Missouri poked her head out of the office. "Stop thinking so loudly then."
Kate grinned and stole a cookie as well. "I like her."
Dean gave her a crooked smile. "You would."
The three ate their food and several cookies before the older adults came back.
"Do you ever feel like you have a swarm of locust in the house?" Missouri asked.
Bobby smiled. "Every day."
Kate sat back and listened to the others talk.
Sam sat beside her. "What is on your mind?"
Kate glanced down and her fingers she had chewed. "I can't go to class tonight but Taylor is going to. We know something got to Evan. What if it comes back or has already hurt Evan?"
Sam cleared his throat. "That is a good point. Hey, Bobby, Dean. One of us needs to check Evan. Taylor will be going there tonight."
Dean rocked back in his chair. "I can head over there."
Kate wanted to ask to go as well but knew what that answer would be. "It will look weird if you show up without me."
"Right. I'll call Taylor and work something out with him." Dean said and walked out of the room.
Kate rested her chin in her hands.
"Who is this Taylor?" Missouri asked with a raised brow.
Kate sighed. "He is a friend. John figured out that his dad was attacked by some kind of monster when he was deployed a long time ago."
Missouri smiled but didn't say anything.
"He is the kid that warned us something was wrong when Kate trapped herself." Bobby said.
Kate blushed.
Missouri sat forward. "How did he do that?"
Bobby shrugged. "He said he kept feeling like something was wrong and called a few times. He called and woke Dean up or he wouldn't have known Kate and Sam were out."
Missouri hummed quietly. "I'd like to meet him."
"Why?" Kate asked.
"You want to make sure he has positive energy, don't you?" Missouri replied.
"Taylor is good." Kate defended.
Missouri leaned over and whispered. "If he stops by to meet me, you'll get to see your boy without breaking your grounding."
Kate nodded and schooled her expressions.
Missouri gave her a subtle wink.
Dean walked back into the room. "Taylor has been briefed. I'm going to meet him over there and will decide what to do after he does an initial check on the place."
"What if people ask why you are there?" Kate asked.
Dean smirked. "I'll say you hurt your shoulder and left your necklace there."
Kate tilted her head. "I guess that will work."
Dean ruffled her hair. "I'll take care of it."
"What if Taylor gets hurt? What if there are demons and they see him looking for them?"
Dean patted her shoulder. "He knows what to do. He is going to do the basic checks. I wont let anything happen."
"Do his parents know about this?" Missouri asked.
Dean nodded. "His dad is currently with my dad and both have okayed the plan."
Kate rested her head on the edge of the table. She wanted to be in the middle of it but had learned that lesson the hard way.
"Is that the bracelet you brought?" Dean asked, pointing to the bracelet that was beside Kate's head.
"Sure is." Missouri said. "Kate and I will have some work to do before I feel comfortable leaving her with it."
Dean twirled his keys. "I should head on over there. I will be back as soon as I can."
Kate hugged him and sat back down. "What kind of work are we talking about?"
Missouri picked up the bracelet and unclasped it. "I want to know how you react to this when you wear it but also when you take it off. Sometimes these things can hold back abilities and when it comes off it is like a dam breaking."
"So I can never take it off?" Kate frowned.
"I didn't say that, sweet girl. You just need to learn control regardless of strength." Missouri motioned for Kate to hold out her arm. She put the bracelet on and sat back. "How do you feel?"
Kate shrugged. "I don't feel any different."
"What ability do you use very well?"
Kate looked at Bobby. "I can read people."
Missouri waved her hand at Bobby to tell him to let Kate read him.
Kate touched his hand and closed her eyes. "I don't see anything."
Bobby felt his tense muscles relax.
"You can wear that for a little bit while you show me those photos and papers about your family. I want to hear all about Scotland." Missouri said and gave Kate a smile.
Kate sighed. She wasn't sure she liked the bracelet but she did want to talk about her family. "Okay."
Missouri followed her to where she had put the box of things.
Kate opened it and showed Missouri various documents. "This is my mom's side of the family. This would be the side that has the abilities."
Missouri looked over the names and wondered if she could contact any of them. She didn't dare bring it up to Kate though.
"This is my dad's side. I know the last name is Irish but some of his family is from places like Germany and Norway."
Missouri smiled. "Everyone is mixed with something else."
"When I went on my trip it was some time before the English took over the place. There were banners and plaids everywhere."
"That was a good observation." Missouri said with a smile.
Kate smiled back. "There were horses and other animals. There was a big stone house but it wasn't a castle. Ada is the girl I met. She was the only one who could see me. She had a mark like mine but it wasn't exactly the same. I didn't get to ask her many questions."
Missouri wanted to know if the child had actually seen Kate or if the vision was symbolic.
Taylor parked his bike in front of the gym and went inside. He didn't smell sulfur and didn't see any yellow powder. Evan wasn't at his desk when he first walked in. Taylor couldn't test him with holy water and tried to figure out how he was going to slip the word "christo" into conversation. He finally saw Evan and made small talk with him. "I think I'm getting a new puppy. My old dog is really old and wont be here much longer. I can't decide what to name it though. I thought about Chase or Christo."
Evan laughed. "Maybe Chase, isn't christo the stuff you cook with?"
Taylor relaxed. "You are right. That is a bad name for a dog." He sent Dean a message to let him know Evan was clean.
Dean walked in while Taylor was in class. "Hey, Kate hurt her shoulder so she wont be in for a few days but she thinks she left a necklace here."
Evan shrugged. "I haven't seen one but you are welcome to look around."
Dean thanked him and did a sweep of the building. He saw zero signs of supernatural presence. He stopped Taylor and asked if he needed a ride home.
"No, I don't think my bike would fit in your car and I just live a few blocks down. Thanks. Tell Katie I said hi."
Dean left and did a final walk around the outside of the building. It appeared as though Evan had been cleared once the demons and Lacy's were dispatched. He was grateful for Taylor's help at the gym but also the heads up he had given. Dean was intrigued with how Taylor had gotten the feeling. He really did like the kid. He was respectful and seemed good for Kate. He didn't want to be paranoid and didn't necessarily think there was anything evil about Taylor but he had enough psychics in his life.
Sam was sitting at his desk when he was overwhelmed by warmth. His head starting hurting.
Kate heard Sam startle. She went into the next room. "Sammy, are you okay?"
Sam was holding his head and rocking.
Missouri touched his arm and gasped. "Are you having a vision?"
Sam groaned. "A bunch."
Missouri put her hand back on his arm. She studied him for a few moments before turning to Kate and taking her bracelet off.
"What did you do that for?" Kate asked.
Missouri held up her finger for Kate to wait.
The visions faded and so did Sam's head ache.
"Well I'll be." Missouri said.
"What?" Kate asked.
"I think I know why your abilities have gotten so strong." Missouri said.
"It is genetic for me." Kate added.
Missouri nodded. "It is but I think you siphon power from people."
Kate tilted her head. "How?"
"I don't know but that is something you can work on. With that bracelet off you stopped taking from Sam."
Kate frowned. "I'm sorry, Sam. I didn't know I was doing it."
Sam smiled. "I don't mind. I didn't want this mess."
"That may also explain why you have so many different abilities. Most psychics have one or two." Missouri said and put the bracelet on Kate's wrist.
She put her hand on Sam's head for a few moments and let go. "That should prevent headaches."
Sam thanked her and went back to his work.
Taylor hopped on his bike and headed toward his house. He stopped a few houses down from his own as he was suddenly winded. He propped his bike to one side and grabbed his stomach. "Oh no, not again."
