Sam motioned for Kate to sit in the other chair. "I have to write a letter to my future self."
Katie scrunched her nose. "Why?"
Sam chuckled. "It is just something this school does for graduates. I guess if you look back at the letter, you can see if your goals stayed in line with what they are today."
Kate chewed a pencil and wrote down a few lines.
Sam looked over her shoulder and laughed. "That is a little cocky."
Kate rolled her eyes. "10 or 20 years from now, you will still be Sam freaking Winchester and you will still be awesome. You will still have the world's best brother and sister and still be the smartest person I've ever known."
Sam winked at her. "I do have great siblings and I will still be me but I think there is a more tasteful way to write it."
"If I was writing a letter to future you I'd write down how you view things. You always do what you think is right. You help people. You care." Kate said.
Sam sighed and wrote a few lines. "Maybe you should write one for yourself."
Kate took a clean sheet of paper and tapped her pencil on her nose. "I'm going to put Kate freaking Winchester. I don't care if it is cocky."
Sam smiled and ruffled her hair. "Go right ahead."

Ada looked frightened and was confused. "Where am I?"
Missouri spoke in a calm voice. "This is a séance."
Ada frowned. "I'm dead?"
Missouri nodded her head. "Yes but the time that I am in is many many many years after your time."
Ada couldn't see much beyond the kind woman.
Missouri cut to the chase. "Do you remember a young girl named Kate?"
Ada's eyes lit up. "A girl would visit me when I was much younger. Her name was Kate."
Missouri smiled. "That is her. We think that she is one of your descendants and she has questions."
Ada's spirt was pure and at peace.
Bobby sat beside Missouri and stayed quiet.
"She had the mark of my family." Ada said and held up her own arm.
Missouri presented the book.
Ada recoiled. "Where did you get that?"
Missouri put the book down. "Kate found it some time ago. The mark on her arm is similar to one of the engravings on the front of this. I thought that your mark may as well."
Ada was leery of the book but held her arm out for Missouri to see.
Missouri found one of the markings that could be a match. She set the book down and chatted with Ada.
Ada was happy to talk freely since she was never able to in life.
Missouri got more information than she could have hoped for. "I have a friend with me. I would like for him to see you before I break the link."
Ada seemed uncomfortable. "Him?"
Missouri offered her a kind smile. "He is a good man. Kate's own father passed away so Bobby is the one keeping her safe."
Ada trusted this strange woman.
Missouri took Bobby's hand and brought him in.
Bobby wasn't sure what he was expecting but the young woman in front of him wasn't it. He felt as though he was seeing Kate, several years in the future.
"Doesn't she look like Kate?" Missouri asked with a smile.
Bobby blinked his eyes. "You do." It was strange seeing someone who shared so much with the hellion up stairs. She didn't favor Brian and he has never met Ruth.
Missouri finished the conversation and let Ada's spirt go.
Bobby sat back in his chair, in awe. "I've never seen one of those go that well."
Missouri smiled. "She is a special girl. The link is stronger due to her abilities and I think, in her time, she would have been killed for even thinking about her abilities. She felt safe here." She wrote down the information that she was given and handed it to Bobby.
"What is this about?" Bobby asked and pointed to a section of notes.
Missouri chuckled "When Kate becomes a woman."
Bobby rubbed his head. "I forgot that was a thing."
Missouri chided him. "You need to get your ducks in a row, Bobby, but don't worry. I'll make sure she is prepared for that."
"Why is this on the notes from Ada?" Bobby asked.
Missouri sucked in a breath of air. "It seems as though, for girls with those marks, the full show of their power comes with womanhood. So many of the girls were locked up or done away with because they couldn't hide the surge of abilities. Those that were prepared or otherwise able to hide it were able to continue on to adulthood."
Bobby groaned. "So everything she has done so far is what... a preview?"
Missouri patted his hand. "I am going to spend more time working with her. You aren't alone in this."
Bobby sighed. "Boys are easier."
Missouri laughed. "I don't think I'd call any of those kids easy." She stood up. "I'm going to track down where I can find some of this stuff. You take this other list and work on it."
Dean walked in the house as they were coming up stairs. "Did it work?"
Missouri squeezed his shoulder. "It sure did."
Bobby grumbled. "Kate hasn't gotten her full powers yet."
Dean froze. "What does that mean?"
Missouri chuckled. "It means, girls in her family get the rest of their abilities when they reach womanhood."
Dean grimaced. "That means when she turns eighteen right?"
Missouri laughed. "No Dean."
Dean caught on. "Oh no. But that is years from now."
Missouri shook her head. "It may not be."
Dean paced back and forth. He was not prepared for any of that kind of girl stuff. "What are we going to do?"
Missouri could tell by the look on his face that he didn't mean the powers. "Dean Winchester, you man up. Ask Miss Lacy for help if you are too chicken to go to the store."
Dean blushed. "Oh."
Missouri tsked and shook her head. "Men. I'll talk to her about the abilities so she isn't caught off guard."
"Caught off guard with what?" Kate asked from the doorway.
Dean whipped his head around and stared at her. "Okay that is creepy."
Kate giggled. "I made noise coming down the stairs."
Dean eyed her. "Still creepy."
Missouri told her to sit down. "I summoned Ada with a séance. We spoke to her to try to gain some information."
Kate frowned. "Why didn't I get to talk to her?"
Missouri squeezed her hand. "I needed to make sure it was safe. You will have your chance before I untether her spirit from whatever is holding it here."
Kate sighed but nodded in agreement.
"I can explain all of the things she said but one of the big things is girls in your family get their full abilities when they reach womanhood."
Kate's mouth dropped open. "Meaning I don't have mine yet?"
Missouri nodded. "It could be any day or it could be years. We don't know that but back in olden days, some of the girls were unprepared or unable to hide that big of a power surge. Sadly, people back then didn't take kindly to that. With you, we will make sure no one knows about it. I will be working with you more often by phone call. This does change things but you wont be blind."
Kate felt a flame of excitement grow. "So I'll be way stronger? Will I have new abilities?"
Dean could see that storm brewing.
Missouri spoke up before Dean did. "We will take it one day at a time. Not all abilities are good. Some can injure people. I knew someone who had to wear gloves at all times because everything he touched caught fire."
Katie frowned. She had already hurt people. "I'll keep my bracelet on. I don't want to accidentally hurt anyone."
"Now, this doesn't mean you are bad. I see that look on your face. You just have to be careful until we get a better handle on it. When I first got my abilities I would hear people's thoughts and it about drove me crazy. Now I only hear what I want to." Missouri said.
Kate gave her a hug. "Thank you for helping me."
"You have quite the team. Just don't work against us." Missouri said and rubbed her back.
Dean smirked to himself.
Missouri turned and looked at him. "I heard that."
Dean grinned sheepishly and put his hands up in defense.
She gave him a wink and turned back around.
Bobby helped Missouri with a few things she needed before she said goodbye for the night.
Dean looked at the time and ushered Kate toward the stairs.
Kate slumped. "It is too early for bed."
Dean poked her side. "You are going to Lacy's with me tomorrow. You'll need your sleep."
Kate remembered the terms of being grounded and community service. "You need your sleep too."
Dean smirked. "Worry about yourself. Now go."
Kate didn't argue although she didn't feel sleepy. She was glad that most things were back to normal after her run in with demon power. She had people that cared about her and she would put up with early bed times.
Sam finished the letter he was working on and put it away. He brushed his teeth and called it an early night.
Kate had just laid down. "You are going to bed?"
Sam stretched. "Yep. I have stuff I want to get done." He looked at her slump shoulders. "Want me to read?"
Kate smiled and put her pillow on the foot of the bed, closer to Sam's bed. "Yes please."
Sam sat on his bed and pulled out the book they had been reading.
When Dean went up stairs Kate was already asleep.
Sam had put the book away and was nearly asleep as well.
Dean took his extra blanket and put it over Kate. He checked to make sure she had the bracelet on and went to bed.
######################
Kate groaned when she woke up. "Why do we have to be there early?"
Dean pulled her blanket away. "Because I told you to get up."
Kate rolled her eyes but got out of bed. "How long am I babysitting?"
Dean pinched the bridge of his nose. "I didn't have a set time. I told you this was part of making amends. I'll be there and so will Lacy."
Kate rubbed her eyes and got ready. "Can I have coffee?"
Dean laughed. "No. You can't afford to stunt your growth."
Kate scrunched her nose but grabbed a biscuit and went out to the car. She didn't mind little kids but hadn't been around them often. Until she went to school, she hadn't really been around many kids at all. What if they didn't like her? What if she didn't know how to take care of them?
Dean could see that she was nervous. "This will be a lesson but you aren't being thrown to wolves. If you need help we will be in the house."
Kate offered him a small smile. "Okay."
Lacy was glad to see Dean and Kate. She loved her nephew and niece and she and her sister were very close. However, working at the diner and then having the on her days off did become exhausting. Looking at Kate's face, she wondered if babysitting had been her idea or if Dean had actually roped her into it.
Dean hugged her and gave her a quick kiss.
Kate made a face then smiled at Lacy.
"Are they here?" Dean asked.
Lacy chuckled. "Yes."
Dean's eyes got wide and he looked around her. "They are inside alone?"
Lacy grinned. "Asleep." She paused and turned quickly. "I hope."
Kate found the exchange odd. She followed them inside and sat her bag down. "So what are we doing today?"
Lacy gave Dean a look. "I have a list of things for Dean if you can keep the kids out from under us."
Dean scoffed. "A list is it? I was told it was one or two things."
Lacy shrugged and kissed his cheek. "The list grew."
Kate didn't get to see this side of their relationship often. She smiled as Dean melted.
A thunk sounded in another room, quickly followed by the sound of feet on the floor. A blur of blue and red shot from the hallway, bounced on the couch and wrapped itself around Lacy's leg.
Lacy picked up the blur and hugged him. "Good morning."
The boy wiggled free, waved at Dean and shot out of the room.
"Whoa." Kate said and watched him run around the living room.
Lacy laughed. "That is Luke."
Dean raised a brow at Katie.
Katie was beginning to understand why Lacy would need help. "How old is he?"
Lacy answered. "He is four. Ivy is a year old."
Kate wasn't sure what to do or say.
Dean nudged her. "Come on. I'll introduce you." He walked into the living room and caught Luke as he ran by. He held him upside down and swayed.
Luke giggled wildly and waved his arms, trying to balance himself.
Dean flipped him over and stood him on the floor. "Luke, this is Kate. She is my sister and she is going to hang out with you today."
Luke grinned brightly. "Hi." He said and ran off.
Kate looked at Dean with confusion. "Now what?"
Dean pulled a box from under the sofa. He shook it and waited for Luke to run back in.
"Cars?" Luke asked with excitement.
Dean sat the box down and opened it. He told Kate to sit down and play with Luke and the cars.
Katie thought that Luke reminded her of a puppy. She helped him put together hot wheels tracks and place them over the sofa and coffee table. She was enjoying the activity and Luke's enthusiasm was contagious. She heard a small voice in the other room and watched as Dean went to retrieve the owner of the voice.
He returned with a little girl with huge brown eyes and dimples. He sat down on the floor beside Kate. "This is Ivy." He used Ivy's hand to wave at Kate.
"You must spend a lot of time with them." Kate commented.
Dean shrugged. "No not a lot. They just know me more than they know you." He tried to sit Ivy down but she wasn't having it. He stood up and took Ivy with him. "She will warm up to you."
Kate smiled. Dean acted like he didn't like kids but he was really good with them."
Lacy stepped into the room. "Okay Lukey, clean up so we can have breakfast."
Luke darted out of the room to the kitchen.
Lacy turned him back towards the living room. "Nope, clean up first."
Luke shouted and sat on the floor.
Kate watched the events play out.
Lacy sighed. "Sit there if you want but we are going to eat."
Kate didn't want the situation to escalate. She didn't know what Lacy's views on parenting were but she wanted Luke to stay out of hot water. "Here, if you roll them to me I will put them in the box."
Luke smiled and scooted toward the stray cars. He rolled them toward the box and soon, all the cars were put away. He grabbed Kate's hand and drug her toward the kitchen.
Lacy smiled. "Are all the cars put away?"
Luke nodded his head and started putting food in his mouth.
"Are you hungry?" Lacy asked Kate.
Kate shook her head. "No. I ate earlier."
Of course Dean was eating.
Kate sat at the table, awkwardly and watched them eat.
Once Luke was done he rolled out of his chair and took off running again.
"Does he always run?" Kate asked.
Lacy nodded her head. "Unless he is sleeping."
Kate was tired just watching him run laps.
Lacy cleaned Ivy's face and removed her from the high chair. She let her feet touch the ground. "Can you watch her?"
Kate offered her hand to the small girl and smiled when she grabbed her fingers. She walked slowly out of the kitchen, making sure that the baby didn't fall.
Lacy washed the dishes and handed Dean the list of things she wanted him to do.
He grumbled but didn't mind the small repairs and lightbulbs that needed to changed. This was his time away from all things supernatural.
Kate sat in the floor with Ivy and stacked blocks. She watched Luke, still running laps. Luke was the same age that Dean was when Mary died. Watching the small boy play was eye opening. She couldn't imagine the weight that had been placed on Dean's shoulders at that age. Was he like Luke before her death? Was he a more mature four year old or had the trauma forced him into maturity. Her heart broke for Dean in a new way. She had always viewed him as a mature, responsible, older brother/parental figure. That wasn't fair to him. He shouldn't have had to grow up so quickly. She had gotten the short end of the stick too but she didn't have to raise a sibling in the process.
Dean checked on Kate and the kids before starting his list. He placed a few sigils around the house as he worked. He felt partially responsible for leading demons to the house. They would not have targeted her if it wasn't for him. This was another reason that he asked Kate to watch the kids. Luke was curious and had a big mouth.
Ivy was toddling around when she lost her balance and hit her head on the coffee table.
Kate was horrified as tears welled in the baby's eyes.
Lacy walked into the room and scooped Ivy into her arms.
Kate apologized profusely that she had gotten hurt and felt panic rising.
Lacy calmed Ivy down and sat her back on the floor. "She is okay. Babies bonk their heads all the time. You didn't do anything wrong."
Kate saw that Ivy was completely fine and back to playing. She had a lot to learn about little kids.
Lacy gave her a reassuring smile. "You are doing great."
Kate wasn't so sure about that. The experience was one more thing she needed to give Dean more credit for.
The rest of the morning seemed to fly by. Ivy had played for a while and was starting to rub her eyes.
Dean took a break to check on Kate and picked Ivy up.
Kate told him about what they had done so far and watched as Ivy quickly fell asleep. "Do you just have super powers with making kids sleep?"
Dean looked at Ivy. "You aren't the only one with powers."
"and here I thought you just used chloroform on me." Kate said with a grin.
Dean laughed. "Well that is an idea." He let Lacy know that Ivy was asleep and put her down in the portable crib in the spare room.
"Does Luke nap?" Kate asked.
Luke kicked her foot. "I don't nap."
Kate scrunched her eyebrows.
Lacy scolded Luke and made him sit down. "We do not kick people."
Luke wiggled off the sofa and slid to the floor.
Lacy picked him up again and sat him down. She caught a foot to the chest and sat back.
Kate was wide eyed. She thought that she wouldn't have made it to five had she acted like that.
Dean cleared his throat and Luke sat up straight.
"Sit here for four minutes and then apologize." Lacy said and set the kitchen timer.
Luke served his time and gave Kate a half hearted apology before going back to his toys.
With Luke calm and Lacy out of the room Kate whispered to Dean. "What was that?"
"Time out?" Dean asked.
"No." Kate said and rolled her eyes. "You clear your throat and he just shoots up."
Dean grinned. "It works with you."
"Well yeah but you.. you.. do you?" Kate stammered.
Dean caught her meaning. "No. My voice is louder and deeper so it startles him."
Kate found that odd. "He is scared of you?"
Dean chuckled. "No. If you hear the same voice over and over you can tune it out."
"I guess that makes sense." Kate said and watched Luke play. "Does he always hit people?"
Dean shrugged. "It has been an issue but he is only four."
Kate's face dropped.
"What?" Dean asked.
"So were you."
Dean gave her a weak smile. He didn't reply but knew what she meant. He squeezed her knee and went back to his list.
Kate pulled out her journal and drew something that was on her mind. She drew a rough draft with the idea to finish it later. She looked up and didn't see Luke. Her stomach lurched. She looked around the room and made her way through the other rooms in the house. Her heart beat faster. Where could he have gone? She saw the front door cracked open and ran outside to find Luke climbing to get on the hood of the impala. "Luke!" She shouted and walked towards him.
Luke jumped and ran around the house.
Kate knew she wouldn't be able to catch him. She called Dean's phone. "So there is a problem."
Dean walked into the living room. "Where are you?"
Kate sighed. "Outside. Luke ran out and there is no way I can run him down."
Dean chuckled. "Hold on." It wasn't his first round of 'catch Luke'.
Luke giggled and ran away from Kate. His head was turned when he ran into Dean's legs.
Dean scooped him up and took him back inside.
Kate felt the pit in her stomach shift.
"Did he run again?" Lacy asked.
Dean rubbed the back of his head. "He did."
Lacy groaned. "I guess I need those locks that go at the top of the door."
Kate felt bad for Lacy. "Maybe we could get some and some food?"
Lacy sighed. "It is okay. I'll get some later."
Dean looked at the squirmy four year old. "If you can show me how to do the car seat thing I don't mind taking him and Kate with me.
Lacy hugged him around the neck. "You are the best."
Dean blushed.
Lacy put the kid seat in the impala and strapped Luke in. "You be on your best behavior."
Kate wondered what his best looked like.
Dean drove the two blocks to the hardware store and got out.
Luke tore off his buckles and jumped out of the car.
Dean barely grabbed him before he darted into the street.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Kate asked.
Dean told her to hold Luke's hand. He dug around in the back of the car until he found some twine. He tied one end to Luke's belt loop and the other to Kate's.
Kate giggled. "What is this?"
Dean smiled. "Now he can't run."
Kate thought it looked funny. "So it is a leash?"
Dean ruffled her hair and put the rest of the twine back. "It works."
"Did you just think of this?" Kate asked and tested the short length of twine.
Dean took Luke's hand and walked toward the store. "No. Once upon a time Sam was a runner and I got tired of losing him."
Kate grinned. She would have to ask Sam about that. She kind of felt like she was tied to a tornado but it did help her anxiety.
Luke was still a handful but she was able to manage his grabby hands.
Dean got what they needed and paid the bill. He put the bags in the car and walked with them to a pizza parlor. "Is everyone good with pizza?"
Luke clapped his hand. "Pizza!"
Dean ordered a few pizzas and they waited on a bench for the food to be done.
Luke bounced around and climbed all over Kate.
Dean felt like his point was slowly being made.
Kate was glad when the pizza was done and she could get back in the car, untethered to Luke. She took a deep breath and rested her head. "You know I could make him nap."
Dean raised a brow. "You can't be doing that."
Kate smirked. "I wont. I'm just letting you know."
Dean shook his head. "He will nap."
Luke was offended. "No I wont!"
Dean looked back at him. "We will see."
Luke tried to bail out of the car as soon as it stopped.
Dean sighed and ushered him toward the front door. "If you run off you wont get pizza."
Luke followed the boxes of pizza. "Pizza."
Kate shook her head but smiled. She stopped and looked around before going inside. She wasn't sure if the day was really simple or if the bracelet on her arm was blocking her view of things. She didn't dare take it off though. She had trust to earn back.
Taylor heard the doorbell ring and looked through the window. Whoever it was must have ran. He went to close the curtain when a flutter caught his eye. He opened the door and found an envelope taped to the wood. He pulled it off and took it inside. There was no name on the envelope but it felt heavy. Against better judgement, he decided to open it. The envelope contained several pages and what looked like a locket. He furrowed his brows. The pages weren't written in English. He wondered if his mom had ordered the locket from China or somewhere. He sat down at the table and looked over the pages. He knew snooping was wrong but he was drawn to something in the pages. His mom was at work and his dad still wasn't home. He traced his fingers over the pages and felt a familiar pit grow between his ribs. He quickly made copies of the pages and locket. His dad taught him to always have duplicates of anything important. He put the copies in his backpack and put the originals in a safe. He grabbed a few water bottles and some snacks. He thought about asking Dean to pick him up but didn't want to put him in a bind. He grabbed his bike, mentally calculated how far the salvage yard was from his house and pedaled.
Luke did eventually fall asleep which gave Kate an opportunity to help Dean with the rest of the list. Ivy was a piece of cake compared to her brother and was happy as long as someone was in the room with her.
Dean showed Kate how to put Ivy on her back with a baby carrier that Ivy's mom used. "This is way easier than using a sheet." Dean said with a smile.
Kate found that she liked the carrier. Ivy didn't weigh much and it was easier to keep track of her. Babies were easy.
Bobby and Missouri were sitting at the table talking about Kate's family when someone pounded on the door.
Bobby furrowed his brows and went to the door. He opened it and stepped back. "Taylor?"
