Author's note: Sue, I hope this chapter clears up why Sam was upset and what happened with Taylor.
###############
Kate walked outside to find Sam. She found him sitting on the porch swing with his head bowed. "Sammy?"
"Just give me a minute." Sam said.
Kate sat down beside him. "No." she gently put her hand on his arm before grabbing his hand.
Sam looked down at his hand but didn't speak.
"You are Sam Winchester. You are not what ever yellow eyes did. It doesn't mean anything." Kate said.
"It does mean something. I have something demonic inside of me and you react to it." Sam said.
Kate squeezed his hand. "I do too. I also have something angelic inside of me and you don't see me acting like an angel."
Sam gave her a small smile. "Maybe they cancel each other out."
Kate scrunched her nose. "No, you are supposed to remind me how good I have been lately."
Sam let go of her hand and put his arm around her shoulders. "You have. I don't mean to get bent out of shape. I just don't like the feeling that a demon did something to me."
Kate leaned her head back on his arm. "I feel the same way. I worry that it will cause me to be a bad person. I'm waiting for the other boot to drop."
Sam sighed. "I just want to know what he did and why."
Kate chewed her lip. "I could do the memory search thing and see if I could find out."
Sam grimaced. "I don't want you to see that."
"I have already seen it. I have seen plenty of things." Kate said.
Sam frowned. "When you got here, the day that your dad dropped you off, you were a mess but innocents. I feel like one thing after the other has stolen that from you."
"I'm 11 now. That is middle aged in hunters years." Kate said, jokingly.
Sam groaned. "Don't say that. You are going to live until you are 102 and have 20 grandkids."
Kate smiled at him.
"Just because you have seen things doesn't mean you should see more things. It messes with your head." Sam said.
"Do you want to know or not?" Kate asked.
Sam shrugged. "Just don't look up."
Kate nodded. "I wont." She took his hand and focused on that deep rooted part of Sam's memory. He was an infant at the time so the memories only existed on a subconscious level. She zeroed in on that night and saw a man standing over her. She felt something hit her lips and tasted copper. She saw the blood dripping from the man's hand and heard Mary enter the room. She quickly left the memory and went to her own. The same thing happened when she was a baby. She opened her eyes and ran her fingers across her lips.
"What is it?" Sam asked.
Kate furrowed her brows. "Blood. He cut his hand and dripped blood in our mouths."
Sam felt his stomach turn. "That is sick."
"Why would he do that?"
Sam sighed. "I don't know. Maybe that is what boosted the abilities. I just don't know why it has lingered this long."
Kate smelled copper and put her hand to her nose.
Sam looked at her. "Another nose bleed? Come on let's get you inside." Sam guided her inside and grabbed a paper towel for her. "No more mind stuff today."
Kate groaned. "It is just visions."
"No more. Okay?" Sam said.
Kate nodded. "Hey, if my blood reacts like that with you, how would it react with a demon?"
"I don't know. Right now you just need to stop bleeding." Sam said.
Kate rolled her eyes. "Alright."
Dean walked into the bathroom. "Is she okay? Are you okay?"
Sam nodded. "Another nose bleed. She isn't going to use her abilities anymore today."
Kate shrugged.
"She found out that the yellow eyed demon dripped blood into our mouths as babies. I don't know what that means but I figured dad would want to know." Sam said.
Dean pulled a face. "That is gross."
Sam nodded. "No kidding."
Dean tapped his fingers along the door facing. "Taylor has figured out his own abilities."
Kate gasped. "What?"
"He can plant memories like Kate can but he can also move things without touching them." Dean said.
Kate stood up quickly and got dizzy. "I want to do that!"
Sam made her sit back down. "Not today."
Kate grumbled. "That has nothing to do with visions."
Sam crouched in front of her. "Does he need to dad voice you?"
Kate giggled and looked at Dean. "No."
Dean scoffed. "I don't like either of you."
Kate grinned. "Don't ruffle if you don't want to be ruffled."
Dean's phone buzzed. "I'm not ruffled. I have to take a call."
Kate waved him away.
Dean shuffled down the stairs and answered the phone.
"You busy?" John asked.
"Not at all. What's up?" Dean asked.
"Is everything under control?"
"Yes sir." Dean answered.
"Good. I have a job for you." John said.
Dean perked up. "What kind?"
"Probably demons. Should be cut and dry." John said.
Dean wrote down the details. "Is this a one man job?"
John cleared his throat. "Take someone with you. If you do things right you should be in and out."
Dean paused. "I think I'm going to take Katie with me. Do you think Sam needs to go too?"
John thought about it. "Why her?"
"I want to see how she does. With Sammy running off to California, I'm going to need a decent navigator and back up." Dean said.
John considered it. "Take her. I'll have my buddy up that way on standby."
"Yes sir. Okay. When should I leave?" Dean asked. He noted his dad's words and went back inside. He told Bobby what was going on and went to find Kate. "Pack a bag."
Taylor was sitting beside her and his head snapped up.
Dean realized what he said. "Oh, oh no. I was telling Kate to pack a bag. She is coming with me."
Taylor let out a giant breath.
"I already told you that you aren't getting kicked out." Dean said.
Taylor shrugged. "You did chose those exact words."
Dean smirked. "I did. Kate, go get your stuff. Two days worth just to be safe."
Kate scrambled and packed her bag.
Dean filled Sam in and then went to Taylor. "Kate is going with me on a hunt. Sam is staying because I want to see how she does. I'm not leaving him to keep an eye on you and I'm not.. not taking you for any reason other than I need to see how she handles this."
Taylor nodded. "I understand."
"Good." Dean said and started filling the duffle with salt and holy water. "You'll have your chance."
Taylor smiled. "Is there anything I can do to help you pack or anything you want me to do while you are gone?"
"I've got the road stuff unless you want to make sandwiches. We wont be gone that long but you should keep up with the cardio list I gave you." Dean went to leave the room and stopped. "Oh, and unpack your bag. Put your stuff in that dresser."
Taylor froze. "The dresser?" He had kept stuff in his bag so he could come and go.
"Yeah, the wooden thing in there with drawers that people normally put clothes in." Dean said.
Taylor grinned and went to do that.
Sam shook his head at Dean. "You could have just told him he isn't going anywhere."
Dean zipped his duffle. "I have. You have. Bobby has. I figured that was more likely to get through his head."
Sam shrugged. "Anything I need to do?"
Dean whistled to tell Kate to hurry. "Get him out of his shell."
Sam nodded. "Sounds simple enough. Good luck with Kate."
Dean put the duffle in the car and went back inside.
Taylor handed him a bag with snacks for the road.
Kate hopped down the stairs. "I wasn't sure what to bring."
"Clothes, Kate." Dean said.
Kate held up her duffle. "Got 'em."
"Let's go."
Kate said goodbye to Taylor, Sam and Bobby and ran after Dean.
Dean pulled the car out of the drive and handed Kate the map.
"We could use the gps." Kate said.
Dean gave her a wink. "You need to make sure you know how to navigate this way. A lot of things can wipe out a gps."
Kate opened the map. "Where are we?"
"Get us to that first marker." Dean said.
Kate furrowed her brows. "You know that way by heart."
Dean nodded. "Excellent practice. I'm following your lead."
Kate looked at the map. "Wait. Don't go that way."
Dean chuckled. "You didn't tell me which way to go."
Kate pursed her lips. "Left."
Dean turned the car and they made it out of town. "Good job."
Kate smiled. "Luckily it is mainly straight lines from here."
Dean turned the music up and cruised.
Kate swam her hand through the wind as they zipped down the interstate. As they got close to town she put her arm back in the car. "Will I be allowed to help?"
Dean nodded. "We are going to stop up here for the night and get a better idea of what we are working with. You may have to wait in the car but you can help with whatever is safe."
Kate frowned. "Why did you bring me?"
Dean smiled. "I need a copilot. I don't want to say that you can go in the building and then have to go back on my word."
Kate pointed out a motel. "That one?"
Dean shrugged. "Looks like home for the night."
Once they settled into the room, Dean notified the others. He flopped back on the bed by the door and closed his eyes.
Kate pulled the research from the bag and looked it over. "This is pretty standard demon stuff."
Dean grumbled.
Kate finished the reading and closed the folder. "I'm going to throw an idea out there and I'd like you to think about it before saying no."
Dean opened one eye. "What kind of idea?"
Kate sat on the bed next to Dean. "After they are trapped, leave one."
Dean sat up. "What?"
"Don't send them all back to hell. Leave one here." Kate said.
Dean rubbed his face. "Do you want to explain?"
"When I burned Sam, we figured it was because of the trace of demon blood that he has. I'd like to see what happens with an actual demon." Kate said.
Dean sighed. "That is dangerous."
"Maybe but I think it is important to try. The first person to throw salt at a ghost was dangerous." Kate said.
"I'll see how things are when I go in. Again, no promises." Dean said and closed his eyes.
Kate scooted to the end of the bed and pulled his boots off. "Go to sleep."
Dean smirked. "I can do that by myself."
Kate sat the boots by the door. "I'm going to shower and then go to bed."
Dean mumbled something and got ready for bed once she was out of the room. He was exhausted and was going to fall asleep either way.
Kate finished her shower and quietly got into her bed. "Night Dean." She didn't get a reply but didn't care.
###############
Sam took Taylor down to the pond. "Can you fish?"
Taylor grinned. "Sure can."
"Dean isn't here to throw you in so we might actually have fish for dinner." Sam said.
Taylor looked at him.
"He is a kid at heart. Kate has gotten thrown in a couple times." Sam said.
Taylor smiled. "I think she mentioned that."
They quietly fished and enjoyed the serenity. Taylor had started the day fearing that he would be sent home. He was sure that he had ruined everything but they all acted like they had before Dean spoke to him. He knew that they weren't what normal people would call a normal family and he knew that they had their own brand of disfunction but he was happy.
"What did you see in me?" Sam asked.
Taylor reeled in a fish. "I'm not sure what you mean."
"Earlier, you and Kate had a moment." Sam reminded him.
"Oh. A lot was going on." Taylor answered.
"No, you can sense it." Sam said. "I want to know what it is."
Taylor took the hook out of the fish's mouth and tossed the fish in the bucket. "When I was trying to help her with her leg, I was disoriented. I was hearing the ringing but not like when the light comes. I felt off but I didn't know why. When she grabbed my hand after, we were able to... I guess share information. I was reacting to what ever was in her blood but I got that demon pit in my stomach when it hit your skin. So there is something there but it isn't a lot."
Sam nodded. "That is what I thought."
"John was possessed by a demon. Were Bobby and Dean?" Taylor asked.
"No, I don't think so." Sam admitted.
"It could be a reaction to someone that has just had a run in. I'd be interested to see if it does the same thing to John." Taylor said.
"You've given this some thought." Sam said.
Taylor recast his line. "I was trying to make sense of it. I also knew it bothered you and wanted to help."
"Thanks." Sam said. "How do you feel now?"
Taylor shrugged. "I don't feel anything."
Sam chuckled. "How do you feel compared to earlier today?"
Taylor turned red. "Oh. I'm good."
"You have got to give me more than that." Sam said with a laugh.
Taylor focused on the pond. "I am still processing."
"Fair enough. Are you waiting for the catch?" Sam asked.
Taylor nodded slowly.
"There isn't a catch. I can understand how all of this would be hard to wrap your head around." Sam said.
Taylor smiled. "It isn't a bad thing. I just am not used to it."
"I will give you a heads up and say that, while he doesn't hold a grudge, he does remember if you make the same mistake twice." Sam said.
Taylor grimaced. "I wont. This was traumatic enough."
Sam reeled in another fish. "I'll be gone soon but I know what it feels like to be angry with a father. I understand feeling like an outcast and trying to manage those feelings. You are welcome to call me."
Taylor thanked him and felt another tug on his line.
"Huh, the fish must like you." Sam said.
Taylor reeled another in. "Maybe that is another ability."
Sam chuckled and stood up. "This looks like enough for the three of us."
Taylor threw the fish in the bucket and gathered the reels.
Bobby stopped them before they went into the house. "You clean those out here."
Taylor took a chance. "We caught them, aren't you supposed to clean them?"
Bobby was shocked for a moment before he laughed.
Taylor grinned. He knew they joked around a lot and wanted to fit in.
Bobby handed him the kit they used to prepare the fish. "That was such a Dean response that I had to do a double take. Just for that you can cook 'em too."
Taylor looked to Sam to make sure that Bobby wasn't mad. "I'm fine with that."
Bobby gently smacked the back of Taylor's head. "The other two made it to a motel for the night."
Sam gutted the fish. "They are missing out."
Taylor ran his knife under the scales. "I don't think Kate would like this part."
Sam shrugged. "No. You are good at that. She is squeamish with animals."
Bobby watched the two work. "Do you know how to cook them?"
Taylor grinned. "Yes. My nana has a certain way of doing it."
Bobby sighed. "Speaking of her. Does she know you are staying over here?"
Taylor paused. "I don't know. She knows I hang out over here. I don't think she would be surprised."
"Do you want to live with her?" Bobby asked.
Taylor flinched. "I can go there if I need to."
Bobby shook his head. "That isn't what I asked you."
"No sir. She is wonderful and I love her but she lives out in the middle of nowhere. She is older and on the other side of her kid years." Taylor answered.
Bobby thought that he was also on the other side of his kid years. "Alright. You aren't being held here but you are welcome to stay."
Taylor thanked Bobby again. He wasn't sure if he would stay but it was nice to have a choice.
Later, Bobby bit into his fish. He closed his eyes and swallowed slowly. "I take back what I said about you not being held here."
Taylor grinned and looked at Sam.
Sam agreed.
"My nana went to cooking school." He explained.
Bobby savored the fish. "Beats diner food and grilled cheese."
Taylor went to bed that night feeling light and happy. He had been so worried that he had messed things up that he hadn't realized he had more likely solidified his place in everything.
############
Kate heard Dean moving around the room and slowly woke up. She heard the bathroom door close. She looked at the time and stretched.
Dean took a long shower. Bobby's house had a lot of great things but water pressure wasn't one of them. He cleared his head and shut off the water. He dressed for the day and checked his phone for messages.
Kate was standing beside the bed but realized he didn't see her. She reached out and touched his arm so she wouldn't spook him.
Dean startled and slung the towel.
Kate fell back on her bed and giggled. "I was trying not to scare you."
Dean picked the towel up. "Why were you standing there with the lights off."
Kate blinked. "It isn't dark in here."
Dean looked around him. "It is dark enough that I didn't see you until you touched me with your creepy hand."
Kate laughed. "You were staring at your phone."
Dean shrugged. He flicked the light on.
Kate squinted her eyes.
Dean turned them back off and then back on. "Are your eyes bothering you?"
"The light is just bright and you are turning it into a strobe light." Kate said.
Dean turned it off again. "You can see like this?"
Kate grabbed his hand so he would leave the light alone. "Yes. Like I said, it isn't that dark. The sun is up."
Dean pulled the curtains to the side. "The sun is coming up. How many fingers am I holding up?"
Kate groaned. "Three."
Dean furrowed his brows. "Do you have night vision?" He caught his foot on the edge of the bed. "Son of a bitch."
Kate turned the light on. "Maybe your eyes aren't working as well as they did."
Dean ruffled her hair. "My eyes are fine. Get ready. We need to be on the road by six."
Kate nudged her bag. "I got up and ready during that two hour shower you took."
Dean scoffed. "It wasn't two hours. Wow you made coffee."
"I have traveled with you before." Kate said with a smile.
Dean finished putting his stuff in a duffle. "I temporarily forgot you were with me."
Kate rolled her eyes. "Thanks."
Dean sipped the coffee. "What do you want to eat."
"We can eat here." Kate said.
Dean rubbed his eyes. "Did Taylor pack breakfast too?"
Kate nodded. "Oatmeal, fruit, toast that has cinnamon swirls and there is one pack of jerky."
"You can have the rest, I'll take the jerky." Dean said.
Kate smacked his hand away from the bag. "I hid it."
"If you hid it, why can't I touch the bag." Dean asked.
Kate grinned and grabbed the bag of jerky. "We share or I tell Bobby."
Dean gave up. "I'll take the continental breakfast."
Kate warmed up the food and used paper towels as plates.
"Oh he even packed butter." Dean said.
Kate opened the jar. "It is homemade."
Dean made a face. "Why? They sell the stuff in the store."
"Try it, you big baby."
Dean put it on his toast and chewed happily. "Who came up with that idea?"
Kate took a bite of her own food. "With so many people in the house and most of us not having a normal job, finances will continue to be get tight. Cooking at home, making what we can make and planning what we eat will help."
Dean blew on his hotel coffee cup of oatmeal. "You realize you are eleven, right?"
Kate slid him a bag with brown sugar. "While you are running around fighting evil, I'm stuck at Bobby's trying to keep myself busy. Taylor is good at this kind of stuff and we did some research."
Dean looked at the bag of sugar. "Did you make this too?"
Kate rolled her eyes. "No."
"Should we find some cows and a wheat field for lunch?" Dean asked.
Kate kicked him under the table. "You are annoying."
Dean rubbed his leg. "Grab that folder over there so we can figure out what we are doing."
"Do you want fries with that? OW!" Kate grumbled.
Dean had twirled the towel and rat tailed her with the end of it. "Still got it."
She sat the folder down. "I read everything in that. What do you want me to do?"
"When we get to the place I will do a once over and give you a better idea. I mainly need you to listen." Dean said.
Kate shrugged. "I can do that."
They left the motel and drove to an apartment complex.
"Aren't these guys normally in abandoned buildings?" Kate said.
Dean snorted. "They are all over the place. One of the tenants in the building witnessed an altercation in which she swore the manager's eyes turned black."
"Does she know about demons?"
Dean paused. "She doesn't know what we know." He went into the building to speak to the tenant.
Kate stayed outside and people watched. She saw an old car parked across the street. The person inside was clearly watching the building. Kate stayed out of eye site but watched the woman. She was blonde and wasn't very good at not looking like she wasn't obviously watching people. Kate watched the door to the car open and the woman stepped out. If hunters had a uniform, the woman was wearing it. Kate furrowed her brows. Was she a hunter? She got a glimpse of the woman's face and shot Dean a message. She swallowed hard and got out of the impala. She quickly made her way to her side and touched her arm. "Jo?"
Jo spun around and shoved Kate away. "Wrong person."
Kate stepped back behind a tree. "You are Jo Harvelle."
Jo drew her gun. "Who the hell are you?"
Kate held her hands up. "I recognized you. I'm a friend. I didn't mean to scare you."
Jo took the safety off the gun and stepped closer. "Who or what are you?"
Dean flew down the steps and grabbed Jo. "Put the damn gun away. She is a kid."
Jo threw an elbow but it didn't connect. She was separated from her weapon and shoved farther back behind the stand of trees.
Dean shot Kate a glare. "What is going on here?"
Jo was seething. "Give me my gun."
Dean unloaded it. "Not until I figure out why you were aiming this at her."
Kate stammered. "I realized she was watching the building. When she got out I recognized her."
Dean motioned with his hand to continue.
"That is Jo Harvelle." She said.
Jo reached for the gun in Dean's hand. She had gathered information about the demons and she'd be damned if some kid ruined the hunt.
Kate brushed her hands along her jeans. "She's sixteen, Dean."
Dean looked from Kate to Jo. "Oh, that Jo."
"What do you mean 'that Jo.' I don't even know you and you have no idea how badly you screwed this up." Jo would have taken out her knife and forced him to give the gun back if she wasn't worried about creating a scene.
"We are on the same case. I was going inside to talk to the tenant when I got an emergency text. Does the name Bobby Singer ring a bell?" He asked.
Jo flinched. "Maybe."
"He has a photo of you and your mom. He said he was friends with her." Kate said.
Jo rolled her eyes. "I don't care if you think you know me. You could have cost me this case."
Dean leaned against the impala. "She did. Does your mom know you are out here?"
Jo scoffed. "No. It doesn't matter. I'm going back in there to finish the job."
Dean grabbed her arm. "You are a kid. You are not going in there."
Jo pulled her arm away. "Oh but you brought the 8 year old."
Kate crossed her arms. "I'm eleven and I'm not going in there. I was waiting in the car when I saw you."
"You should have stayed." Jo said.
Kate frowned. "When I realized who you were, I knew that you didn't have back up."
"Tell me what you know about the demons." Dean said.
Jo spit on the ground. "Screw you."
"You were ready to go in. I want to know what you think you knew. I'll even help you out if you are that set on it." Dean said.
Jo relayed the information she had.
"Well it is a good thing she stopped you or you'd be dead right now. The demon isn't in the manager anymore. It is the door man and there are two more." Dean said.
Jo blinked slowly. "I would have figured that out once I got inside."
"I see you have a flask of holy water. I spotted it the second I saw you two over here. That is the only reason I didn't pull my own gun on you. It is also the reason the doorman would have known you were a hunter." Dean said.
Jo dropped her shoulders. "So what now?"
"Call your mom." Dean said.
Jo flashed him an intense glare. "No."
"I can just have Bobby give me her number." Dean said.
Kate pleaded with Jo. "We aren't trying to steal the case. I didn't want to upset you. She is probably worried."
Jo pulled her phone out and sent a message that said she was on a case and would be back in a while.
Dean whispered in Kate's ear. "If she tries to follow me, compel her."
Kate nodded.
Dean told them to wait and went back inside. He had to be careful due to the amount of people in the building. His best bet was to get them into an empty room but he had no great way of doing that unless he pissed one of them off and caused the other two to show up.
"Stay." Kate said.
Jo stopped walking and turned back to the car.
Kate felt bad for Jo. She understood what was going through her head.
Dean returned to the car. "There are too many people in there. We have to wait them out."
Kate used the binoculars. "The longer we stick around, the more suspicious we look. Let me scan."
Dean sighed. "Scan to find the other two. That is it."
Kate focused and walked herself through the building. She could see their true faces and they were not pretty. "Doorman, guy over there at the meter box and there is one on the top floor. Dean, the one on the top floor is a crossroads demon."
Dean stared at her. "How do you know?"
"I just do. I have an idea." Kate said.
Dean waited for her to speak.
"I can lead them out here."
Dean's eyes flew open. "Absolutely not."
Kate held up her hands. She tilted her head toward Jo. She had compelled her to wait in her car. "I can push into people's heads. I don't have to be near them. I can say something to make them curious. They will search for me and we can trap them."
Dean thought about it. "Trap them where?"
"Oh that is your part of the operation." Kate said.
Dean grumbled. "Stay here. There is a run down building a block that way." He ran down the block and confirmed that the building was indeed empty. He told Jo to follow him and the three set the trap.
"How are you going to get them here?" Jo asked.
Dean sighed. "Just leave that to me. I need you to stand by. If I say run, I want you to run."
Jo finished up a devil's trap. She didn't plan on running.
Dean didn't trust Jo. He didn't know her. He would call for back up but they were dangerously close to not blending in. "Kate."
Kate nodded. She felt her head hurt as she focused in on the meter reader. She imagined herself floating around him. She spoke a few words of an exorcism and zipped back.
Jo was outside the small building on the look out. She was pretending to tie her boot when she saw the man walking down the street. She slipped through the door. "It worked."
Dean told both girls to hide. When the man walked through the door, Dean splashed him with holy water and trapped him. He exorcised the demon with little effort. They had clearly caught him off guard. He was amazed how well the plan worked. "It isn't always that simple so get that look of your face." He said to Jo.
Jo dropped the smile. "I'll do the next one."
Dean shook his head. "I've heard enough about your mom to know she would kill me if you got so much as a scrape."
Jo smirked. "What is she going to say when she finds out you let me work on this hunt?"
Dean rolled his eyes. "Just hide."
Kate tried to bait the second one but her head was shattering. She felt the blood drip from her nose.
Dean shot her a look. "Stop."
Kate made a last ditch effort to push into the doorman's head. She held her own head and took a cloth to stop the bleeding.
"No more." Dean said.
Jo ran in the building. "We have company."
"Doorman?" Dean asked.
"And two friends." Jo answered.
"Shit. Shit." Dean said and scrambled.
The door burst open and Dean winced as the air rushed from his lungs. One demon stumbled into a trap but the other two were free.
Jo felt fear rush through her. She shot one with rock salt and ducked behind a wall.
Dean wanted to yell for them to run but couldn't breathe.
Kate was hidden from view.
"What do we have here?" The lead demon asked and flicked Jo beside Dean.
Jo hit the wall and whimpered.
Kate pulled Taylor's recorder from her pocket and pushed play. She used her stealth to move away from it.
All three demon's eyes turned black.
Dean couldn't hear anything.
"Find what is doing that and smash it." The main demon said.
The one that had been shot found the recorder and stomped it.
Dean struggled to break free.
Kate had to think quick. She focused with all of her being and knocked an old frame off the wall.
The demon heard it fall and took off toward it.
Dean was terrified.
Kate made it out a window and found the water system for the building. The second demon was still searching for her. She had one shot and took a chance. She cut her wrist and let blood flow into the water tank. She let a single tear fall as the cut healed itself. She dug around in her pocket for a lighter. She heard footsteps and squeaked when the man grabbed her.
Dean saw the demon return with Kate and fought back tears. He was helpless.
Kate gave him a slight smirk and struggled against the demon.
Dean thought he had seen a half smile but she was probably in pain.
Kate looked above her head and flicked the lighter open, setting the demon's shirt on fire.
"Stupid girl. That wont do anything." The main demon laughed and flicked his eyes to black.
The demon that had Kate took his shirt off and threw it.
Dean managed to find his voice. "Hey, dickhead. Pick on someone your own size." He gurgled when a pressure built on his neck.
Kate smiled. "I wasn't trying to set your friend on fire."
The main demon moved closer to her. "You don't realize what you just stepped into."
The fire from the shirt set the sprinkler system off. "Neither do you."
Dean and Jo both hit the ground as the demons clawed at their skin. Dean scrambled and started the exorcism.
Jo kicked one of the men in the stomach to prevent him from leaving.
Black smoke filled the room and then broke through a window.
Dean dropped to his knees and checked one of the men. "He's alive."
Jo checked another for a pulse. "This one too."
Kate frowned. "Not these two."
Dean grabbed her. "Are you okay?"
Kate coughed. "We have to leave before the fire department gets here."
Dean grabbed her and Jo and ran back to the impala. He shoved both of them in the car and took off.
"My car." Jo said.
"Is stolen." Dean said.
Jo couldn't deny that. She was glad that she hadn't left her belongings in the car when she had shown Dean what she had on the building.
Dean pulled into the motel parking lot and tossed Jo the key. "118. Go open the door."
Jo ran to do that.
Dean scooped Kate up. Her nose was still pouring blood and her neck was floppy. He took her in the room and told Jo to grab a towel. "Put it on the bed." He put Kate on top of the towel.
Jo grabbed a wash cloth and brought it back. "Did she get injured?"
Dean shrugged. "I don't know yet."
"How did the sprinklers do that?" She asked.
Dean growled. "Now isn't the time."
Jo found Kate's duffle and some clean clothes. "Here, I'll get her cleaned up."
Dean stepped back and paced. This was why he didn't want her to hunt. She had handled herself and had a plan but she was just a kid.
Jo gently sat Kate up and changed her shirt. She wiped her face and brushed her hair back out of her face. Kate's pants were mostly dry but Jo swapped them for some soft shorts. "What happened to her leg?"
Dean swallowed hard. "Hell hound."
Jo felt sick to her stomach. She ran to the bathroom and threw up.
Dean knelt beside Kate's head. "We are back at the motel. You have to wake up." He trailed his fingers down the side of her face. The bleeding had stopped but he still propped her up with a few pillows.
Jo steadied herself and walked out of the bathroom. "I'm sorry."
Dean shook his head. "You didn't do this."
"I distracted you." Jo said.
Dean sighed. "Demons are nasty."
Jo knew that but hadn't realized just how powerful they were.
"Call your mom." Dean said.
"She is just going to yell at me." Jo said.
Dean looked at her. "After what just happened, you better soak that in. Had Kate not set off the fire system, you and I both would be long gone."
Jo excused herself and dialed her mom's number. "Momma."
Ellen felt her knees grow weak. "Where the hell are you?"
Jo told her the town and motel. "I can explain everything. I'm sorry."
Ellen was ready to strangle Jo. She had lost her husband, Bill and it looked like Jo was bent on getting herself killed.
Dean felt Kate stir. "Kate, Kate. Katie?"
Kate grumbled. "I think."
Dean sighed in relief. "I was getting worried."
Kate opened her eyes and sat up. "You didn't change me did you?"
Dean chuckled. "No, Jo did. You have other worries though."
Kate felt tears in he eyes. "I'm sorry. I know you told me to hide. Please don't be mad at me."
Dean hugged her. "I'm not mad. Calm down. What did you do with the water?"
Kate grimaced. "Holy water." She flicked her eyes as Jo came back in the room.
Dean turned. "What did your mom say?"
Jo looked at the floor. "She is driving this way."
Dean grimaced. "Did you bother telling her that I tried to get you to head home?"
Jo put her hands on her hips. "No. I figured you could just explain things to her."
Kate giggled. "I like her."
Jo smiled. "You look so much better."
Kate leaned her head on Dean. "I'm hungry."
Dean leaned back against the headboard. "We could order something but only if you are okay with it. I know you are trying to homestead."
Kate shoved him. "Be nice to me."
Dean hugged her. "What do you want?"
"Pizza with everything on it and extra cheese." Kate said.
"You got it." Dean said. He called the local pizza place and ordered extra.
Jo watched them. "Uh, I'm sorry I pulled a gun on you."
Kate smiled. "You were watching for demons and a creepy little kid grabbed you and knew your name. No hard feelings."
Jo was impressed with Kate. "How did you do all of that?"
Kate froze and looked at Dean. "I set the recorder down and ran away from it. Then for the water I used holy water and the smoke set off the alarm."
Jo studied her. "Did you know that would work?"
Kate didn't want to give her false information. "I didn't. I got lucky."
They talked lightly for a while and ate the pizza. Jo found that she liked the duo. They were nice. She felt bad for the way she had treated them at first.
Kate was resting her heavy head against Dean when she heard someone knock on the door. She sat up quickly. "Demon?"
Jo looked through the peep hole. "No. Worse." She opened the door and took a deep breath. "Hi, mom."
