Kate flinched when Dean grabbed her. She wasn't expecting to be crushed into a hug and all she could do was let him hug her. "Dean?"
Dean let go of her long enough to sit down and have her stand in front of him. "You aren't a stone. How can you be so nonchalant?"
"Well, I don't have to die forever. The spell doesn't say anything about me replacing the blood I lose." Kate said.
"Do you have no respect for your own life?" Dean asked.
John motioned for everyone to leave them alone.
"No, I do. I just... I was already there." Kate said.
"You are still putting your life on the line." Dean countered.
"Well, not as much. I know the risks seem pointless to you but please understand that things are better this way." Kate said.
"Five years. We could have waited. This didn't have to happen." Dean said.
Kate sniffled and looked down at her feet.
"Did you have to use that specific spell?"
Kate looked away from him and fidgeted.
"Everyone else left. Look at me. I want to know before I pass judgment." Dean said.
Kate frowned and tears flowed from her eyes.
Dean sighed and put her on his lap. He let her lay her head on him. "Are those tears because you feel bad or you are afraid your answer will hurt me?"
Kate nodded.
"Did you choose that one because it would bind you?" Dean asked.
"Please don't hate me."
"Kid, I don't hate you. I am frustrated with you. I am worried about you." Dean said.
"The spell didn't bind me." Kate said. "The binding spellbound me to that spell."
Dean stiffened. "So the blood didn't have to be yours?"
"The sacrifice has to be from the person who starts the spell." Kate said.
Dean narrowed his eyes. "Why would someone make a spell that required them to die?" He felt Kate shift. "That is why you bound yourself isn't it?"
Kate was torn between wanting to bury her face into his t-shirt and wanting to get as far away as possible. "If you could see all the things I have."
"I will give you that. You have seen how things change." Dean said.
Kate looked at him. "Everything I did was because I know things."
"Binding yourself to a spell so that we couldn't stop you once we found out was because you knew things?"
Kate's face turned red.
"We can avoid some stuff just by knowing about it. Jess doesn't have to die the way that our moms did. "Dean said. "Knowing that Azazel got to Andy, we could help him control his abilities. I understand wanting to save dad and jumping on that live grenade. I don't agree with it but I understand. The rest of it is bad, Kate."
"But Andy can be normal." Kate said.
"He could have five years from now, apparently." Dean said.
Kate chewed on her fingers. How could she tell him that the reason she did everything was to make life easier on everyone else? "Things will be easier now."
Dean let her words sink in. "Did you take into consideration that your Nephilian blood might affect this spell?"
"Tessa said it would be what we needed." Kate said.
"You are trusting a reaper." Dean said. "Yet, you couldn't trust me to hear you out about the spell without binding yourself to it."
Kate sniffled. "I'm sorry."
Dean patted her leg. "Is there any way at all for you to unbind yourself?"
Kate shook her head.
"All it asks for is blood, right?" Dean asked.
"Yes." Kate said quietly.
"So I will give you enough to replace what you lose." Dean said.
Kate looked at him with worried eyes. "You can't. Then you'd..."
"I am bigger than you are. I am able to donate more." Dean said.
"But... but... not that much." Kate said.
"Consider it part of your consequence." Dean said.
"You dying isn't a consequence!"
"You don't give a damn about your own life." Dean said. "Jess can be on standby but I want you to think long and hard about your choices."
"Please." Kate said. "You'll get sick. You'll pass out."
"Which means I'll be kicking your ass tomorrow instead of tonight." Dean said.
Kate slumped. "After this is all over, Azazel will be gone, Andy will be cured, Sam will probably be cured too. Things will be so much easier and better."
"And?" Dean asked.
"Is none of that at least newsworthy? I didn't just do bad things." Kate said.
"I acknowledged those things. I'm not going to cover choosing dad over yourself. Don't do it again but it is understandable." Dean said.
"The rest?"
Dean ruffled her hair. "You and I are going to have a very long talk about all of that."
Kate frowned. "Your talks suck."
"This one wasn't so bad." Dean said.
"I'm sorry."
Dean stood up. "I know."
The kitchen was busy. Taylor put some food in the oven for everyone and focused on cutting up vegetables and bread. He was worried about Kate. Part of him was worried about himself but mostly Kate. Fear of how mad they would be paled in comparison to the type of spell Kate had wrapped herself up in.
Sam kept Jess under his arm. She said she wanted to know about his family and the supernatural but he was considering Cas's offer to wipe her memory. He sat down on one of the benches and let her sit on his leg. The table was full anyway.
Caleb nudged Bobby. "The whole time I have known him, I have never seen him like that with a girl."
Bobby readjusted his cap. "Just about makes you sick doesn't it?"
Caleb chuckled. "I've been bumming it in motels chasing a nest of vampires and he is off in California in a nice apartment with a girl like that."
Sam looked up and gave Caleb and Bobby his best 'bitch face.'
April was caught off guard by how many people were in the bunker. She was a little embarrassed that she had just woken up.
Taylor took Ian. "I will watch him if you want to..."
"Yeah, I'll be back." April said.
He let Ian down and told everyone to watch where they walked.
Ian toddled over to Bobby and stared at him.
Bobby spoke softly to him and patted his head. He went back to talking to Caleb but felt a tug on his pants.
Taylor smirked. "He wants you to pick him up."
"I don't know this kid." Bobby said.
Ian clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth. "Up."
"Will his mother get mad?" Bobby asked.
"No, I don't think so." Taylor said.
Bobby picked Ian up. It had been a long time since he had held a baby.
Ian rested his head on Bobby's shoulder and ran his hand across the side of his stubbled chin.
John chuckled.
Bobby gave him a scowl.
April returned and tilted her head. She didn't know the man who was holding Ian.
Taylor stepped around Caleb. "That is Bobby. Ian didn't give him a choice."
April rubbed Ian's back and held her hands out.
Ian turned his head back to Bobby and patted his face.
Bobby blushed. He held his hand out to shake hers. "Bobby Singer."
April shrugged. "April and that is Ian." She looked around and gasped. "Andy?"
Andy scooted out of the corner. "Here."
April relaxed. "I didn't see you."
Sam gave her a small wave. "I am Sam. This is Jess."
Caleb introduced himself as well.
"Where are Dean and Kate?"
John spoke up. "In the library."
Andy was worried that Dean would tell his mom that he compelled her and then she'd get mad. He crawled to the edge of the kitchen and looked into the hallway. He saw Dean standing at the edge of the library entrance and tried to whistle.
Dean looked at Andy and raised an eyebrow. He motioned for Andy to get closer. "What's up?"
"My mom is awake." Andy said.
"Okay, we will be in there in a minute." Dean said.
Andy shifted from foot to foot. "Is she going to be mad at me?"
Dean sighed. "I will talk to her."
Andy frowned and looked at his feet.
"Can you tell April to come in here when you get to the kitchen?" Dean asked.
Kate nodded and took a deep breath. She knew everyone was tense and likely disappointed in her. She tapped Apri. "Dean wants to talk to you."
April closed her eyes. "Okay."
Dean sat Andy on the library table and waited on April.
"Hey, what's going on?" April asked.
"Andy had something he wanted to tell you." Dean said.
Andy gave him sad eyes.
"Go ahead." Dean said.
"I compelled you to take a nap." Andy said, nervously.
April's face changed from confusion to frustration.
"He said you were upset and he told you to have a 'happy nap' with Ian." Dean said.
April searched for something to say. "You know not to compel me."
Dean put Andy on the floor. He swatted him lightly. "Don't compel people. I'm going to talk to your mom."
Andy looked at April. "Sorry mama." He hugged her and ran out of the library.
"Andy said that you cry a lot now." Dean said. He shook his head. "No, I get it. You are going through a lot. He compelled you because Ian fell asleep and he wanted you to rest and not be sad."
April's face turned red in embarrassment. "That isn't his job."
"Before my mom died, she and my dad would argue and he would leave. I'd let her know it would be okay. That wasn't my job either but I did it because I loved her. Andy told me right after he compelled you. He has been worried that you would be mad about it." Dean said.
April sighed. "I need to pull it together."
"I think he would still worry about you. He is a good kid." Dean said.
"I'm the adult. He shouldn't have so much on his shoulders." April sat down and put her head in her palms.
"Don't beat yourself up. You are doing the best you can." He leaned against the table. "Trying to raise a kid when you are still a kid is hard. You got him when you were a teenager right?"
"Yes. Kate said you and I were around the same age."
"Well I can tell you that you are doing a good job. Kate is a hot mess so most days I question myself. It doesn't help anything. You just push through." Dean said. "Let's get something to eat. Kate found a way to cure Andy but we need to be careful with it."
April wiped a tear from her eye. She stood up and rolled her shoulders. She could act happy for Andy.
Bobby tried to put Ian down but the baby protested. Babies didn't typically seek Bobby out so he was a little confused.
"He thinks you are a teddy bear." Sam said.
"Soft around the edges." Caleb added.
"If you two don't shut up I'm going to kick both of your a..." He looked at Ian and shrugged.
Andy knelt on the bench beside Bobby and poked Ian's cheek. "He doesn't say bad words yet."
Taylor pulled a pan from the oven and gathered plates. "Everyone can grab food from up here. That table is full."
Sam made Bobby a plate and handed it to him. "Since you have your hands full."
Bobby scoffed. He pulled Ian's hand away from the hot plate. "What does he eat?"
"Anything we eat." April said. She reached for Ian. "I can take him."
Ian fussed until April handed him something to eat. He was an easy baby as long as there was food around.
Dean looked at the food. "This is a whole lot of vegetables."
Taylor raised an eyebrow. "You could have cooked."
Dean scrunched his nose. "Touche."
Sam nudged Dean. "What is the plan?"
Dean groaned. "I have to talk to dad about that. I am going to supply the blood she loses."
"You are going to be cutting it awful close." Sam said.
Dean glanced at Jess.
"Dean, I don't want her pulled into this."
"That is your decision." Dean said.
"Actually it is mine." Jess said and looked around Sam.
"Jess, this is complicated." Sam said.
"Then explain it to me, Sam." Jess replied.
Dean shoved a potato in his mouth. He looked away from Sam to keep from laughing.
"It is dark magic." Sam said.
"And?"
"Well, Kate got herself into something and it is dangerous." Sam said.
"and she needs a certain blood type?" Jes asked.
Sam looked down at his plate. "Can we talk about this in a little bit?"
Jess sighed and kissed his cheek. "Yes."
Sam caught Dean's face out of the corner of his eye and jabbed him in the ribs with his elbow. "Jerk."
"Bitch."
Kate was quiet through dinner. She was running through things in her head and her nerves were frayed.
Bobby had requested a welfare check on David and got a call during the middle of the meal. He stepped into the library. "Hello?"
Jody Mills, the officer that took David in when he tried to break into Bobby's house was the one that called. "Is David still bothering Taylor?"
Bobby rubbed his chin. "Taylor has a good heart. He worries about David. He just wants to know where he is."
"He is actually locked up here for a few days. He was caught trespassing and it seems that he fell into a bad crowd." Jody said.
"Can you share details about that?" Bobby asked.
Jody looked around her. Normally, she'd say no but Taylor had been on her mind. "He and a friend broke into an old building and tagged the place."
"That doesn't surprise me."
"Kids these days get bored and are into some weird stuff. They are into some kind of satanic stuff. The Willson's had a few chickens go missing and they were found there." Jody said.
Bobby grimaced. "I don't suspect they were alive. Were they just hungry?"
Jody sighed. "It looked like they were doing a ritual. I don't know. We are waiting on a psych eval."
Bobby wrote down some of the important details. "Thank you. Please keep me updated."
Jody assured him that she would call if she learned anything else. She put her phone back on the receiver and rocked back in her chair. She had forgotten to ask where Taylor was. She hadn't seen them around town.
Taylor watched Bobby suspiciously.
Bobby spoke quietly to John. He shared what Jody had told him and glanced over at Taylor.
Taylor got up and walked over to them. "What is it?"
"Nothing." John said and waved him off.
Taylor clenched his fist. "Bullshit."
John grabbed his arm and hauled him into the hallway.
Jess's eyes widened.
Sam put his arm around her and turned her back toward the table.
"Watch your mouth." John said.
"I know that call was about David." Taylor said.
Bobby joined them. "Taylor, calm down."
Taylor pulled his arm away from John. "He is going to kill people because you won't take me seriously."
John put his hand on the back of Taylor's neck and steered him toward the library. "You will watch your tone."
Taylor forced himself to reign in the anger.
"I talked to officer Mills. I was relaying what she said to John. Right now, we don't know if it is anything." Bobby said.
"Yes, you do. If it was nothing you wouldn't look like it was something." Taylor said. He stepped away from John.
Bobby went to explain but John stopped him. "You already have a talk about disrespect coming. Do you want to keep it up? We can have that talk right now."
"David is my Azazel. You got your closure. I know in my heart that he is going to do something and you can't expect me to remain calm while he is out there." Taylor said.
Bobby stepped in. "Everyone calm down. We are taking you seriously. Jody told me something that I am concerned about. We need to look into that."
"Then why tell me it is nothing?" Taylor asked.
"Because you can't control yourself when it comes to David." John said.
"I could have ended him a long time ago if I couldn't control myself." Taylor said.
Bobby gave Taylor a look. "Could you just keep your mouth shut for a minute before you piss this one off." He pointed to John with his thumb. With both of them quiet he took a deep breath. "David was picked up by the police for doing a ritual in an old building. I don't know what kind of ritual. It could be something he found on the internet or it could be real." He held his hand up to silence Taylor. "John, I've got him."
John glared at Taylor for a moment. "I won't tell you again about the disrespect."
Taylor nodded. "Yes, sir."
Bobby waited for John to leave and looked at Taylor. "Boy, do you have a death wish?"
Taylor dropped his shoulders. "It has been a long day."
"Ya, think?" Bobby quipped. "It has been a long day for everybody. I put in the call to Jody. I got the information you asked for. I am trying here. You were right about David. Now, with that out of the way... stop flying off the handle. Right or not, John is not the person to go toe to toe with."
Taylor paced a little. "What if people die?"
"One thing at a time. David is behind bars right now." Bobby said.
"What if he has something to do with all of this mess?"
"We will get there, son. When does Kate have to do this spell?" Bobby asked.
"Tonight." Taylor said.
"Okay, after dinner, we can figure all of that out. Just don't get yourself into hotter water than you are currently in." Bobby said.
Taylor sighed. "Okay. Thanks, Bobby."
Kate finished her food and busied herself with making sure that each room had clean bedding and extra blankets. It was unspoken but understood that no one was leaving the bunker that night. When she originally tied herself to the spell, she wasn't scared. However, after seeing how much pain Dean was in, she was nervous and miserable. No matter how hard she tried, her impulses got the best of her.
April wandered into the hallway and checked on Kate. "Hey, I heard what happened."
Kate rested her elbows against the washer and covered her face.
"I just want you to know that I think what you did is noble." April said.
Kate groaned. "You are the only one that thinks so."
"I think the others see that you were trying to help. They just also worry." April said.
"Andy can be a normal kid and grow up as a normal kid." Kate said.
"How dangerous is this?" April asked.
Kate turned toward April. "The dangerous part is kind of over. I don't have to die twice as I can use my blood that is technically given after I died. Spells are tricky. Sometimes, they are very literal. Other times, they are flexible."
April touched Kate's arm. "Which kind is this one?"
Kate chewed her thumbnail. "I guess we will find out."
April looked at the girl in front of her. Although Kate had made bad choices, she was brave. "What happens if this is literal?"
Kate shrugged. "I lose another piece of my soul." She grimaced. "That is if the stipulation isn't that I stay dead... although, if that was the case I wouldn't have to deal with Dean after this is over."
April gave her a sad smile. "He was pretty upset."
"They all are." Kate said. "Biggest, biggest mad." She held her arms open to mimick Andy.
April chuckled. "Andy."
Kate nodded. "It is our new measurement of madness."
"He is so worried about making people mad now." April said.
Kate snorted. "Dean has that effect."
"I don't think he is scared of him." April said.
"No. I don't think so either. I think he is just wanting to avoid swats." Kate said. She rolled her eyes. "I too want to avoid those."
"Maybe things will blow over. Everyone is tense right now." April said.
Kate gathered clean blankets. "Wouldn't that be nice."
Sam grabbed a few blankets from Kate. "I can handle my room."
Kate worked on the other rooms.
Sam fell back onto his bed.
Jess laid beside him. "This is yours?"
Sam looked around. "Yeah, I guess. I haven't been here much."
Jess rolled onto her stomach and propped her head on her hand. "I've got to say, you are one mysterious person."
Sam smiled and pulled her head down so he could kiss her. "Not always a good thing."
Jess ran her fingers down his chest. "I'm impressed. Here I just thought your family were alcoholics. No, you guys are fighting monsters." She kissed his neck.
Dean knocked on the open door. "Oh, we are most definitely alcoholics. Also, there are children here and you two should be ashamed of yourselves."
Sam threw a pillow at him.
Dean grinned and threw it back. "I'm going to shut the door and leave you two kids alone."
Jess rolled onto her back and giggled. "Is he always like that?"
Sam rolled his eyes. "Always."
Jess studied Sam's palm. He had strong hands and it made sense now that she knew what he did growing up. "Are you going to go back?"
Sam rolled onto his side and looked at her. "Of course."
"How?" Jess asked.
"I chose to walk away." Sam said. "No matter what I do, there will always be demons out there. I can get an education and a steady job. I don't have to follow in their footsteps."
Jess looked up at the ceiling. "Please don't erase my memory."
Sam choked a little.
"I know Cas wants to. I know you didn't want me to know but now I do and I don't want to be in the dark again." Jess said.
"Knowing is a burden." Sam said.
"Knowing can keep us safe." Jess said.
Sam swallowed slowly. "Kate did a spell. In the end, it should provide a cure for Andy. There was a demon named Azazel. Azazel is the one that killed my mother and Kate's mother. Turns out he probably killed Andy's too. He dosed each of us with some of his blood." Sam paused.
"Go on." Jess said.
"It was like he was trying to create some kind of psychic being or something. I... I ... sometimes I have dreams that come true." Sam said.
Jess sat up a little. "You have abilities like Kate's?"
Sam furrowed his brows. "No. She has so much more than I do." He turned his face away from her.
"Look at me." Jess said and touched his cheek. "No matter what you tell me, you are still Sam."
Sam shifted so he was sitting up. "It seems that Andy was given more blood than I was. He is stronger at a younger age. We think he is supposed to do something bad when he is older so if he is cured now, he won't be able to do that. For Kate to do this spell, she has to use a lot of her blood. It would kill a normal person and could kill her. She and Dean share a blood type and he can replace some of what she loses."
Jess's heart raced a little. "Why would they let her do that?"
Sam smirked. "Because she made it to where they have no choice. She bound herself to the spell so either she does it or the spell takes what it needs."
Jess was starting to understand the tension.
"Kate does what Kate does." Sam said.
"What about me?" Jess asked.
"I don't want you to have to give blood for this." Sam said.
Jess touched his leg. "If it helps, I want to. I donate blood all the time."
Dean sat down on one of the tables in the infirmary. "Go ahead and do it."
Kate frowned. "We could just..."
"No, you dying isn't an option. You did your part of all of this so I'm going to do mine." Dean said.
"But... I'll come back." Kate said.
"With less of your soul." He patted his arm.
"Dean, please?" Kate said.
"This is what we are going to do." Dean said. "We decided so you can hook me up or I will have dad do it."
Kate groaned. "You know, you are just as likely to jump on a live grenade."
Dean nodded. "I'm an adult. I wouldn't tie myself to a damn spell."
"No, you'd sell your soul." Kate grumbled.
"How is this different? You are selling pieces of your soul." Dean said.
"It is different because it is pieces, not the whole thing."
"One of the fears with you being a Nephilian was that if you turned bad, you could destroy everything. Now, I don't see that in you. I see my Kate who is impulsive but as a good heart. However, if you keep breaking off pieces of your soul, how long before you lose what makes you Kate?" Dean asked.
Kate looked at the ground.
"A piece or two may not be the end of the world but what happens if something big attacks and you lose a third piece and then a fourth piece? You are going to live a long, healthy life and you can't throw in all your cards before you even reach adulthood." Dean said.
Kate rubbed his arm with alcohol. "I didn't... I didn't think about that."
"I figured as much." Dean said.
"Does such wisdom come with age?" Kate asked.
Dean chuckled and rubbed his thumb across his cheek. "It comes from doing a lot of dumb shit as a kid and then having Sam, you and Taylor do dumb shit."
Kate gave him a small smile. "So this is a learning experience."
Dean raised an eyebrow. "I will make sure it is."
"There is no way I am getting out of that?" Kate asked.
"Nope." Dean said.
Kate poked his arm and frowned when blood started to drain into the bag. "I'm really sorry."
"I know. I am too." Dean said. He put an arm around her and pulled her in for a side hug. "You are one hell of a kid."
"Do you think my mom and dad can see what is going on?" Kate asked.
Dean shrugged. "I think, if our parents could see us from heaven, we'd have a lot more people leaving the place to swoop down and stop us from doing the things we do."
"I don't want to take too much. People can survive with blood loss. I'll just feel like crap for a little bit." Kate said.
"Take the normal amount for someone my size and we will take more later." Dean said.
Sam stepped into the infirmary. "How is it going?"
"Good so far." Dean said.
Kate hid her face from Sam. She didn't want him to be angry for getting Dean and Jess wrapped up in the spell.
Sam put a hand on her shoulder. "Jess is set on helping. I did try to talk her out of it."
"I'm so sorry, Sam." Kate said.
"Don't be. Dean decided to help and Jess did too. I don't think either of them would listen if you told them not to." Sam said.
Kate hugged him. "Are you mad that Jess knows everything?"
"No. I'm worried. Also, it wasn't you who told her." He looked at Dean.
"In order to save her life." Dean said.
"Yeah, yeah. Thanks for that by the way." Sam said.
"Thank Taylor. He realized what was going on." Dean said.
"How does the cure work?" Sam asked.
"You drink it." Kate said.
Sam scrunched his nose.
Kate rolled her eyes. "Not my blood. There should be powder leftover that you make into a tea."
"How did someone come up with this? Is it to remove demon blood from someone?" Sam asked.
Kate bit her lip. "It is more than one spell mixed together. We have a piece of Azazel so it is like antivenom."
"I can try it first to make sure it isn't going to hurt Andy." Sam said.
"If it was going to hurt you guys, older me would stop it." Kate said.
"Unless older you can't stop it because you wind up getting yourself killed." Dean said.
"Wow, thanks for the confidence." Kate grumbled.
"I am just putting it out there. You better come out of this unscathed." Dean warned.
Kate rolled her eyes. "Or you will revive me, kill me again and then revive me."
Dean ruffled her hair. "Exactly."
Sam's eyes twinkled. "So I'm not the only one that got that threat."
"Nope." Dean said. He clenched and unclenched his fist. "Will you have less abilities with normal human blood in your veins?"
Kate shrugged.
"See these are things to ask yourself before doing crap like this." Dean said.
"I know. You have made your point."
"Sam, can you get dad and Bobby?" Dean asked.
Kate was self conscious. Doing the previous part of the spell wasn't as nerve wracking because it was done alone. Having eyes on her made it worse. "Can't they stay out there?"
"Nope." Dean said. "I may need to give you more blood and may get weak. You need a few extra sets of hands anyway."
Jess stopped Sam. "Is it about to happen?"
"Yeah. We are just getting things ready." Sam said.
"You can go ahead and take blood from me." Jess said.
"No, we may not need it and I don't want you to feel bad for nothing."
Jess pulled his hand to make him stop and look at her. "If I feel bad, you will just have to take care of me."
Caleb walked by and gagged. He got the side of Sam's fist to the stomach and groaned. "So touchy."
Jess put her arms around Sam and smiled into his chest. "They give you a hard time don't they."
"They do. Sucks being the younger brother." Sam said and kissed the top of her head. "I will ask my dad about it."
Jess followed him.
"Hey, dad. Dean wants you and Bobby in there. Jess wants to go ahead and get blood taken."
John started to vetoe the idea.
"If things get bad, taking the extra time to get blood from me could be bad for Kate. If you do it now and don't need it, you can give it to Dean." Jess said.
John eyed Jess and then Sam. "Okay." He walked by them and headed to the infirmary.
Sam furrowed his brows and pinched the bridge of his nose.
Bobby smiled a little. "At this point it might be a girl thing."
Sam scoffed. "Has to be."
Jess wasn't sure what they meant.
Bobby grabbed a few things from the kitchen. "John is the most stubborn of all the Winchesters."
"Ah, I don't know about that." Sam said.
Bobby cleared his throat. "Of the Winchester men." He looked at Sam for confirmation. "He doesn't back down for much. If Sam had been the one to bring up that point he would have said no and that would be it."
Jess held Sam's hand. "Oh no, did I make things worse?"
Sam squeezed her hand. "No, you had a valid point."
Bobby walked by them. He stopped and turned around. "Kate is worse than all three of you combined."
Sam chuckled. He couldn't disagree.
Jess frowned. "Kate isn't bad."
John walked back into the kitchen and tossed Sam a kit for blood donations.
"Thanks." Sam said as John walked away. He looked at Jess's arms for a good vein. "Do you want me to get someone else to do this?"
Jess smiled. "No."
"Kate isn't bad. Kate is just Kate." Sam said and cleaned Jess's arm. He had stuck Dean and John numerous times but Jess was delicate. "This will pinch."
Jess didn't react. "Not everyone is scared of needles."
Sam finished setting up the bag and held Jess's hand. "Well excuse me, I wasn't aware you were miss badass."
Jess lightly kicked his shin. "That is your fault for underestimating me. Now, tell me about Kate."
"Kate has a history of doing things that are questionable but she does them in a way that it makes it hard to be mad at her." Sam told her a few stories. "There really is no way to explain aside from Kate is Kate."
"Well, I like her." Jess said. Sam pressed his forehead to Jess's. "Me too. Dean is cocky and Kate knocks him down a peg or two."
Jess smiled. "That is what Caleb said about me and you."
"Don't listen to Caleb." Sam said. "He likes to hear himself talk."
Jess flicked her eyes toward the doorway. "Hi."
Caleb raised his eyebrows. "I do, do I?"
Sam watched the amount of blood he was taking. "He is cocky too."
Caleb leaned against the counter. "While Sam is busy with the rest of them, I can hang out with you. I have all kinds of Sam stories that I'm just busting at the seams to tell you."
Sam gave him a scowl.
Jess grinned. "Okay!"
Sam pulled the tube from her arm and put a piece of guaze over the wound. He wrapped her elbow and bent it so that she could hold pressure on it. "I have Caleb stories too."
"Go ahead and tell them. I'm not trying to impress the girl." Caleb said.
Jess pulled Sam to her by his belt loop. "Sam doesn't need to impress me. I like him how he is."
Caleb gagged again. "Gross."
Jess smiled.
"This is why I kept my family from you. They are all assholes." Sam said. He held out the bag of blood. "Caleb, take this in there."
Caleb did as Sam asked. "Maybe pop some popcorn. Sam did a lot of dorky stuff as a kid."
Sam turned back to Jess. "How do you feel?"
"I feel fine, Sam. This isn't the first time I've donated blood." Jess said.
"Still, this isn't your normal setting." Sam said.
"I'll be fine. I promise." Jess said.
Caleb returned. "Alright love birds, Sammy is needed in there."
Sam flipped him off and kissed Jess one more time. "I'll be back as soon as possible."
Jess tapped the back of his thigh with her foot as he left. "Focus on them, not me!" She looked at Caleb and patted the table. "What kind of dorky stuff?"
Kate was antsy. She really didn't want everyone in the room with her. If nothing else, having to do dark magic in front of them made her feel dirty.
Taylor placed items on one of the tables. "I got everything you needed."
John read through the spell and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Really, Katelyn?"
Kate shrunk. "Can't go back now." She drew a sigil on the floor and set the bowl in the center. She put herbs and the stone from Azazel in a smaller bowl and set them to the side. She looked at Bobby and John and then back at the bowl. "Not everyone needs to be here."
John shook his head. "We are and we aren't leaving."
Kate emptied a vial into the larger bowl and whispered over it. She double-checked the spell and bit her lip. "I'm sorry." She cut into her wrist and held it over the bowl.
Dean winced and sat beside her in case she got dizzy. "What if you heal?"
"I won't." Kate said.
Dean stiffened.
"Lecture me after." Kate said. She held Dean's hand and let her blood flow into the bowl.
Dean felt her getting shakey and motioned for John to start the blood bag.
Kate pulled her arm away. "No, you can't yet."
Dean pinned her arm to keep her from pulling away more.
John stuck the needle in her arm.
"It has to be mine." Kate said.
John eyed the bowl. It was getting close to the marks Kate had drawn.
Kate felt very sleepy. She blinked rapidly and tried to stay upright. She mumbled a few more words of the incantation and nearly knocked the bowl over trying to place the smaller one inside.
Dean tried to pull her arm away from the bowl but it felt like she was tied. "Start the bag."
John removed the clip and hung the bag above Kate's head so that it would enter her arm faster.
Dean flicked his eyes to Taylor. "Why isn't it stopping?"
Taylor crouched down and touched Kate's head. He ran his hand down her face and then sat back on his feet.
"Taylor." Dean said. He felt Kate grow heavy. "She's out." He braced her so that she didn't fall over and held his arm out. "She's going to need more than we have."
"Taylor, did she tell us everything?" John asked.
Taylor wasn't sure what he saw because Kate was so disoriented. "I... I think Dean is right."
The bag emptied and John replaced it with the second one Dean gave.
Kate was shaking in Dean's arms.
Sam knelt beside Dean. "Here, I'll hold her. You are going to faint if you give her more blood."
Dean grabbed a chair and held his arm out. "I don't care. Just do it."
"We have Jess's." John said.
"We are going to need more than that!" Dean said.
Kate blinked and saw Tessa at the edge of the room. She closed her eyes and they were beside the stream from a previous vision. "You came back."
Tessa tossed a pebble into the water. "You lied to me."
"I'm sorry. I couldn't go." Kate said.
Tessa sighed. "Winchesters. You are all the same."
Kate's arm stopped bleeding and flopped to her side. She was cold and Sam wrapped his arms around her.
Dean was starting to feel woozy from his own blood loss but he didn't care.
Taylor lit a match and threw it into the bowl. A green light engulfed the bowls and crackled.
Bobby knelt beside the flame. "Is it supposed to do that?"
Taylor looked at Kate for a moment and then reached into the flame. He pulled the large bowl toward him and used a hand to stifle the flame. He pulled the smaller bowl from the larger one and set it to the side. The large bowl was empty. "Sam, hair."
Sam tilted his head. "What?
"Just give me some of your hair." Taylor said.
Sam yanked out a few strands and handed them to Taylor.
Taylor tossed the strands in and turned his face as the flames grew in size and changed colors. They died out and left charred herbs inside the bowl.
Kate saw a bright light and shielded her eyes. "I can't go."
Tessa looked at the light. "No, you can't."
"What?" Kate said.
"Winchesters have a pesky habit of not staying dead." Tessa said.
"Am I dead right now?" Kate asked.
"No." Tessa said. She looked at a watch on her wrist. "Good luck."
"Good luck with what?" Kate asked and spun around when Tessa vanished.
Kate slowly opened her eyes and squinted at the fluorescent bulbs that illuminated the infirmary. She was weak and her mouth was dry.
Dean flew out of his chair and touched Kate's face. "Dad! She's awake."
Kate blinked slowly. The stubble on his face told her that it had been at least a few hours since she passed out. She looked into his eyes and saw them slowly narrow. Oh... she meant good luck with Dean.
